Today we are studying Mark Chapter 6. In this chapter, we see Jesus rejected in His hometown, the disciples sent out in ministry, the death of John the Baptist, the feeding of the five thousand, and Jesus walking on the water. This chapter shows both human limitation and divine power. It reveals that unbelief can limit what we experience, but faith opens the door to God’s provision and presence. It calls us to trust Him, obey Him, and recognize Him even in the middle of life’s challenges.

Welcome to Giving God PRAISE. This is a podcast where we walk through the entire Bible, book by book and chapter by chapter. Our desire is to discover not only what God’s Word says, but what it means to praise God in our daily life. In each episode, we explore a Promise to Claim, a Response to Make, an Attitude to Change, an Instruction to Obey, a Sin to Confess, and an Example to Follow. So let’s go ahead and grab our Bibles and dive into today’s teaching.

Let’s begin reading Mark Chapter 6:

He went away from there and came to His hometown, and His disciples followed Him. When the Sabbath came, He began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard Him were astonished.

“Where did this man get these things?” they said. “What is this wisdom given to Him, and how are these miracles performed by His hands? Isn’t this the carpenter, the son of Mary…?” So they were offended by Him.

Then Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown, among his relatives, and in his household.” So He was not able to do any miracles there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them. And He was amazed at their unbelief.

Then He went around the villages teaching.

He summoned the Twelve and began to send them out in pairs and gave them authority over unclean spirits. He instructed them to take nothing for the road except a staff—no bread, no traveling bag, no money in their belts—but to wear sandals and not put on two tunics.

He said to them, “Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that place. If any place does not welcome you or listen to you, when you leave there, shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.”

So they went out and preached that people should repent. They drove out many demons, anointed many sick people with oil and healed them.

King Herod heard of it, because Jesus’ name had become well known… Others said, “He is Elijah!” Still others said, “He’s a prophet…”

Herod said, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised!”

For Herod himself had given orders to arrest John… because of Herodias… John had been telling Herod, “It’s not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife!”

So Herodias held a grudge against him…

When a strategic day came… Herodias’s daughter danced and pleased Herod… “Ask me whatever you want, and I’ll give it to you…”

So she went out and said to her mother, “What should I ask for?”

“John the Baptist’s head,” she said.

Immediately she hurried to the king and said, “I want you to give me John the Baptist’s head on a platter—right now!”

Though the king was deeply distressed… he sent for an executioner… He went and beheaded him in prison…

The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to Him all that they had done and taught.

He said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a remote place and rest for a while.”

So they went away in the boat by themselves…

When they got out, He saw a large crowd and had compassion on them… Then He began to teach them many things.

When it was already late… His disciples said, “Send them away so they can go… and buy themselves something to eat.”

“You give them something to eat,” He responded.

They said to Him, “Should we go and buy 200 denarii worth of bread…?”

“How many loaves do you have?” He asked them. “Go look.”

When they found out they said, “Five, and two fish.”

Then He instructed them to have all the people sit down… He took the five loaves and the two fish… blessed and broke the loaves… kept giving them to His disciples…

Everyone ate and was filled. Then they picked up 12 baskets full of pieces of bread and fish.

Immediately He made His disciples get into the boat… After He said goodbye to them, He went away to the mountain to pray.

Well into the night, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and He was alone on the land. He saw them straining at the oars, because the wind was against them…

He came toward them walking on the sea…

When they saw Him walking on the sea, they thought it was a ghost and cried out… Immediately He spoke with them and said, “Have courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

Then He got into the boat with them, and the wind ceased.

They were completely astounded, because they had not understood about the loaves. Instead, their hearts were hardened.

Before we begin our PRAISE study, let’s turn our attention to the Lord and seek His guidance.

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for Your Word and the truth we see in Mark Chapter 6. Help us to trust You even when we don’t fully understand what You are doing. Strengthen our faith, remove our unbelief, and teach us to rely on Your provision and Your presence in every situation.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Now that we’ve read God’s Word and prepared our hearts in prayer, let’s begin our PRAISE study and see what He wants to show us today.

First, we see a Promise to Claim. In Mark 6:41–42 we see that “everyone ate and was filled.” This promise reminds us that God provides. What seemed insufficient—five loaves and two fish—became more than enough in the hands of Jesus. This shows us that God is not limited by what we have. When we place what we have into His hands, He multiplies it. This promise gives us confidence that we don’t have to rely on our own strength or resources. God is able to provide in ways that go beyond our expectations. When we trust Him, we experience His provision in both practical and spiritual ways.

Next is a Response to Make. In Mark 6:7 it says Jesus “began to send them out.” Our response is to go when He calls. The disciples were sent out with little, but they were given authority and direction. This challenges us to step out in obedience, even when we don’t feel fully prepared. When God calls us, He equips us. Our response is not to wait for perfect conditions, but to trust Him and move forward. Obedience opens the door for God to work through us.

Now let’s consider an Attitude to Change. In Mark 6:6 Jesus was amazed at their unbelief. This reveals an attitude that must change—unbelief. Even those who knew Jesus struggled to trust Him. We must move from doubt to faith. Unbelief limits what we experience, while faith allows us to see God’s power. Changing our attitude means choosing to trust Him, even when things don’t make sense.

Then we see an Instruction to Obey. In Mark 6:50 Jesus says, “Have courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” The instruction is to reject fear and trust His presence. Fear can overwhelm us, especially in difficult situations, but Jesus calls us to courage. Obedience in this area means choosing faith over fear and remembering that He is with us.

Next we come to a Sin to Confess. This chapter reveals the sin of hardness of heart. In Mark 6:52 it says their hearts were hardened because they did not understand. We must confess any resistance or lack of understanding that keeps us from trusting God fully. When we bring this before Him, He softens our hearts and deepens our faith.

Finally, we see an Example to Follow. Jesus shows us compassion, obedience, and dependence on the Father. He served others, provided for their needs, and took time to pray. This is our example—to care for others, trust God’s provision, and stay connected to Him.

Mark Chapter 6 reminds us that God provides, calls us to go, and meets us in every storm. He is present, powerful, and worthy of our trust.
