Today we are studying Mark Chapter 9. In this chapter, Jesus is transfigured before His disciples, casts out a demon, teaches about His coming death and resurrection, and instructs His followers on humility, faith, and holiness—showing us that true greatness in God’s kingdom comes through dependence on Him and a surrendered life. Chapter 9 reminds us that the Christian life is not about pride or perfection—it’s about faith, humility, and dependence on God. It calls us to believe boldly, live humbly, guard our influence, and follow Jesus with a sincere and surrendered heart.

Welcome to Giving God PRAISE. This is a podcast where we walk through the entire Bible book by book and chapter by chapter. Our goal is to discover not only what God’s Word says, but what it means to praise God in our daily life. In each episode, we explore a Promise to Claim, a Response to Make, an Attitude to Change, an Instruction to Obey, a Sin to Confess, and an Example to Follow. So let’s go ahead and grab our Bibles and dive into today’s teaching.
First, we see a Promise to Claim. In Mark 9:23 Jesus said, “ ‘If You can?’ Everything is possible for the one who believes.” This promise reminds us that faith unlocks what seems impossible. When we place our trust in Jesus, we step into the power and possibility of God’s work in our lives.
Next is a Response to Make. In Mark 9:24 the father cried out, “I do believe! Help my unbelief!” Our response is honest faith. We don’t have to come to Jesus pretending to have perfect faith—we come honestly, asking Him to strengthen what is weak within us.
Now let’s consider an Attitude to Change. In Mark 9:34 it says, “But they were silent, because on the way they had been arguing with one another about who was the greatest.” This reveals an attitude of pride and self-promotion. We must shift from seeking status to embracing humility, recognizing that greatness in God’s kingdom looks very different from the world’s definition.
Then we see an Instruction to Obey. In Mark 9:35 Jesus says, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.” The instruction is clear: live a life of humility and service. We are called to put others before ourselves and serve with a heart that reflects Christ.
Next we come to a Sin to Confess. In Mark 9:42 Jesus warns, “But whoever causes the downfall of one of these little ones who believe in Me—it would be better for him if a heavy millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea.” This reveals the seriousness of leading others into sin. We must confess any actions, words, or attitudes that negatively influence others or cause them to stumble in their faith.
Finally, we see an Example to Follow. In Mark 9:36–37 it says, “Then He took a child, had him stand among them, and taking him in His arms, He said to them, ‘Whoever welcomes one little child such as this in My name welcomes Me. And whoever welcomes Me does not welcome Me, but Him who sent Me.’ ” Jesus models humility, love, and care for the least and the overlooked. We are called to reflect that same heart in how we treat others.
Mark Chapter 9 reminds us that the Christian life is not about pride or perfection—it’s about faith, humility, and dependence on God. It calls us to believe boldly, live humbly, guard our influence, and follow Jesus with a sincere and surrendered heart.
