Mark Chapter 9 - When Your Faith Feels Weak but Jesus Is Still Strong

Today we are studying Mark Chapter 9. In this chapter, we see the transfiguration of Jesus, the healing of a demon-possessed boy, and powerful teachings about faith, humility, and holiness. Jesus reveals His glory, demonstrates His authority, and teaches His disciples what it truly means to follow Him. Welcome to Giving God PRAISE. This is a podcast where we walk through the entire Bible, book by book and chapter by chapter. Our desire is to discover not only what God’s Word says, but what it means to praise God in our daily life. In each episode, we explore a Promise to Claim, a Response to Make, an Attitude to Change, an Instruction to Obey, a Sin to Confess, and an Example to Follow. So let’s go ahead and grab our Bibles and dive into today’s teaching.

Today we are studying Mark Chapter 9. In this chapter, we see the transfiguration of Jesus, the healing of a demon-possessed boy, and powerful teachings about faith, humility, and holiness. Jesus reveals His glory, demonstrates His authority, and teaches His disciples what it truly means to follow Him. This chapter challenges us to trust God deeply, live humbly, and pursue a life that reflects His holiness.

Let’s begin reading Mark Chapter 9:

Then He said to them, “I assure you: There are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God come in power.”

After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain by themselves to be alone. He was transformed in front of them, and His clothes became dazzling—extremely white as no launderer on earth could whiten them.

Elijah appeared to them with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus.

Then Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it’s good for us to be here! Let us make three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah”—because he did not know what to say, since they were terrified.

A cloud appeared, overshadowing them, and a voice came from the cloud: “This is My beloved Son; listen to Him!”

Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus alone.

As they were coming down from the mountain, He ordered them to tell no one what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead…

When they came to the disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and scribes disputing with them…

Someone from the crowd answered Him, “Teacher, I brought my son to You. He has a spirit that makes him unable to speak… I asked Your disciples to drive it out, but they couldn’t.”

He replied to them, “You unbelieving generation! How long will I be with you? Bring him to Me.”

So they brought the boy to Him. When the spirit saw Him, it immediately convulsed the boy…

Jesus asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?”

“From childhood,” he said… “But if You can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.”

Then Jesus said to him, “‘If You can’? Everything is possible to the one who believes.”

Immediately the father of the boy cried out, “I do believe! Help my unbelief!”

When Jesus saw that a crowd was rapidly coming together, He rebuked the unclean spirit… Then it came out… and the boy became like a corpse… But Jesus took him by the hand, raised him, and he stood up.

After He went into a house, His disciples asked Him privately, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”

And He told them, “This kind can come out by nothing but prayer.”

Then they left that place and made their way through Galilee, but He did not want anyone to know it. For He was teaching His disciples and telling them, “The Son of Man is going to be betrayed… They will kill Him, and after He is killed, He will rise three days later.”

But they did not understand this statement…

They came to Capernaum. When He was in the house, He asked them, “What were you arguing about on the way?”

But they were silent, because on the way they had been arguing with one another about who was the greatest.

Sitting down, He called the Twelve and said to them, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.”

He took a child, had him stand among them… “Whoever welcomes one little child such as this in My name welcomes Me…”

John said to Him, “Teacher, we saw someone driving out demons in Your name… and we tried to stop him…”

“Don’t stop him,” said Jesus… “For whoever is not against us is for us.”

“And whoever gives you a cup of water to drink in My name… will never lose his reward.”

“But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to fall away—it would be better for him if a heavy millstone were hung around his neck…”

“If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off… It is better for you to enter life maimed than to have two hands and go to hell…”

“For everyone will be salted with fire. Salt is good, but if the salt should lose its flavor… Have salt among yourselves, and be at peace with one another.”

Before we begin our PRAISE study, let’s take a moment to come before the Lord and ask Him to strengthen our faith.

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for Your Word and the truth we see in Mark Chapter 9. Help us to trust You more deeply and to bring even our doubts before You. Teach us to walk in humility, to serve others, and to pursue a life that honors You.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Now that we’ve read God’s Word and prepared our hearts in prayer, let’s begin our PRAISE study and see what He wants to show us today.

First, we see a Promise to Claim. In Mark 9:23 Jesus says, “Everything is possible to the one who believes.” This promise reminds us of the power of faith. It does not mean that faith forces outcomes, but that God is able to do what we cannot. The father in this chapter struggled with belief, yet Jesus still met him in that moment. This promise encourages us that even imperfect faith can lead to powerful encounters with God. When we trust Him, we open our lives to His power and His work. It reminds us that no situation is beyond His ability. When we claim this promise, we are reminded that God is not limited, and our faith connects us to His power.

Next is a Response to Make. In Mark 9:24 the father says, “I do believe! Help my unbelief!” Our response is to bring our faith and our struggles honestly before God. We do not have to pretend to be perfect. God invites us to come as we are. This response requires humility and honesty. When we admit our doubts and still choose to trust Him, we position ourselves for growth. Faith is not about having no doubts—it is about choosing to trust God even when we do.

Now let’s consider an Attitude to Change. In Mark 9:34 the disciples were arguing about who was the greatest. This reveals an attitude of pride and comparison. We must move from self-promotion to humility. God’s kingdom does not operate like the world. True greatness is not about status—it is about serving others. Changing our attitude means letting go of the desire to be recognized and instead choosing to serve faithfully.

Then we see an Instruction to Obey. In Mark 9:35 Jesus says, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.” The instruction is to serve. We are called to put others first and to live with humility. Obedience in this area reflects God’s heart and transforms our relationships.

Next we come to a Sin to Confess. This chapter reveals the sin of pride and causing others to stumble. Jesus gives strong warnings about leading others into sin. We must confess any area where our actions or attitudes negatively influence others or where pride has taken root in our hearts. When we bring this before God, He restores humility and alignment.

Finally, we see an Example to Follow. The father of the boy demonstrates honest faith. He didn’t have perfect belief, but he came to Jesus anyway. This is our example—to approach God with honesty, trust Him, and rely on Him completely.

Mark Chapter 9 reminds us that faith, humility, and obedience are essential in following Jesus. He calls us to trust Him deeply and live in a way that reflects His heart.
