Welcome to Giving God PRAISE. This is a podcast where we walk through the entire Bible book by book and chapter by chapter. Our goal is to discover not only what God’s Word says, but what it means to praise God in our daily life. In each episode, we explore a Promise to Claim, a Response to Make, an Attitude to Change, an Instruction to Obey, a Sin to Confess, and an Example to Follow. So let’s go ahead and grab our Bibles and dive into today’s teaching.
Today we are studying Mark Chapter 14. In this chapter, Jesus is anointed at Bethany, shares the Last Supper with His disciples, prays in Gethsemane, is betrayed and arrested, and faces trial—showing us what true surrender, sacrifice, and faithfulness look like even in the most difficult moments.
First, we see a Promise to Claim. In Mark 14:9 Jesus says, “I assure you: Wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her.” This promise reminds us that acts of genuine devotion to Jesus are never forgotten. What we do for Him, from a sincere heart, carries eternal significance.
Next is a Response to Make. In Mark 14:38 Jesus says, “Watch and pray so that you won’t enter into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Our response is to stay spiritually alert through prayer. We must rely on God daily, recognizing our weakness and seeking His strength to overcome temptation.
Now let’s consider an Attitude to Change. In Mark 14:4–5 it says, “But some were expressing indignation to one another: ‘Why has this fragrant oil been wasted? For this oil might have been sold for more than 300 denarii and given to the poor.’ And they began to scold her.” This reveals an attitude of criticism and misunderstanding toward true worship. We must move from judging devotion to honoring it, recognizing the value of wholehearted worship.
Then we see an Instruction to Obey. In Mark 14:22–24 it says, “As they were eating, He took bread, blessed and broke it, gave it to them, and said, ‘Take it; this is My body.’ Then He took a cup, and after giving thanks, He gave it to them… ‘This is My blood that establishes the covenant; it is shed for many.’” The instruction is to remember and honor Jesus’ sacrifice. We are called to live in continual remembrance of what He has done for us.
Next we come to a Sin to Confess. In Mark 14:71 it says about Peter, “Then he started to curse and to swear with an oath, ‘I don’t know this man you’re talking about!’” This reveals the sin of denying Jesus out of fear. We must confess any moment where we shrink back, compromise, or fail to stand for Him.
Finally, we see an Example to Follow. In Mark 14:36 Jesus prayed, “Abba, Father… Take this cup away from Me. Nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will.” This is the ultimate example of surrender. Even in suffering, Jesus submitted fully to the will of the Father. We are called to trust God completely, even when His will is difficult.
Mark Chapter 14 reminds us that following Jesus requires surrender, devotion, and faithfulness under pressure. It calls us to pray diligently, honor His sacrifice, resist fear, and choose God’s will above our own.
