Today we are studying Luke Chapter 2. In this chapter, we witness the birth of Jesus, the announcement to the shepherds, and the early moments of His life. What begins in a humble setting carries eternal significance. The Savior of the world is born, and heaven itself celebrates. We also see Simeon and Anna recognize who Jesus is, showing us what it looks like to wait faithfully and respond with joy. This chapter reminds us that God’s promises are fulfilled, His salvation has come, and our response to Jesus matters. It calls us to recognize Him, rejoice in Him, and live in light of who He is.

Welcome to Giving God PRAISE. This is a podcast where we walk through the entire Bible, book by book and chapter by chapter. Our desire is to discover not only what God’s Word says, but what it means to praise God in our daily life. In each episode, we explore a Promise to Claim, a Response to Make, an Attitude to Change, an Instruction to Obey, a Sin to Confess, and an Example to Follow. So let’s go ahead and grab our Bibles and dive into today’s teaching.
Let’s begin reading Luke Chapter 2:
In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that the whole empire should be registered… So everyone went to be registered, each to his own town.
Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem… to be registered along with Mary, who was engaged to him and was pregnant.
While they were there, the time came for her to give birth. Then she gave birth to her firstborn Son, and she wrapped Him snugly in cloth and laid Him in a feeding trough—because there was no room for them at the lodging place.
In the same region, shepherds were staying out in the fields and keeping watch at night over their flock. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them… and they were terrified.
But the angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid, for look, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people: Today a Savior, who is Messiah the Lord, was born for you in the city of David.
“This will be the sign for you: You will find a baby wrapped snugly in cloth and lying in a feeding trough.”
Suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host… praising God and saying:
“Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and peace on earth to people He favors!”
When the angels had left them… the shepherds said… “Let’s go straight to Bethlehem and see what has happened…”
They hurried off and found both Mary and Joseph, and the baby who was lying in the feeding trough.
After seeing them, they reported the message…
But Mary was treasuring up all these things in her heart and meditating on them.
The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had seen and heard…
When the days of their purification… were finished, they brought Him up to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord…
There was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon… This man was righteous and devout… The Holy Spirit was on him.
He came in the Spirit into the temple complex… and took Him up in his arms, praised God, and said:
“Now, Master, You can dismiss Your slave in peace…
For my eyes have seen Your salvation…”
There was also a prophetess, Anna… She never left the temple complex, serving God night and day with fasting and prayers.
At that very moment, she came up and began to thank God and to speak about Him to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.
Every year His parents traveled to Jerusalem for the Passover Festival. When He was 12 years old… they went up according to the custom…
After those days were over… the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem…
After three days, they found Him in the temple complex sitting among the teachers…
“Didn’t you know that I had to be in My Father’s house?”
And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and with people.
Let’s take a moment to quiet our hearts and reflect on what we’ve just read.
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for Your Word and the truth we see in Luke Chapter 2. Help us to recognize Jesus for who He is and to respond with joy, faith, and worship. Open our hearts to receive Your truth and to live in light of it.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Now that we’ve read God’s Word and prepared our hearts in prayer, let’s begin our PRAISE study and see what He wants to show us today.
In this chapter, we first see a Promise to Claim. In Luke 2:11 the angel declares, “Today a Savior… was born for you.” This promise is deeply personal—it is not just that a Savior was born, but that He was born for us. This reminds us that salvation is not distant or abstract; it is personal and intentional. God saw our need and responded with love. The birth of Jesus fulfills the promise of redemption that had been spoken throughout Scripture. It assures us that God keeps His Word and that His plans are always unfolding, even when we do not see them. This promise gives us hope because it shows that God steps into our world to bring salvation. When we claim this promise, we are reminded that we are not forgotten or overlooked. God’s love is active, personal, and present. The Savior came for us, and that changes everything.
Next, we see a Response to Make. In Luke 2:15 the shepherds say, “Let’s go… and see.” Their response was immediate action. They did not hesitate—they moved toward Jesus. This is our response as well. When we hear the truth about who Jesus is, we are called to respond. This may look like seeking Him, trusting Him, or following Him more closely. The shepherds didn’t just hear the message—they acted on it. This challenges us to do the same. Faith requires movement. It is not enough to hear—we must respond. When we respond like the shepherds, we experience the reality of who Jesus is in a deeper way. Our faith becomes active, and our relationship with Him grows. This response moves us from awareness to transformation.
Now we consider an Attitude to Change. In Luke 2:19 it says Mary was “treasuring up all these things… and meditating on them.” This reveals an attitude of reflection and humility. We must move from distraction to reflection. In a busy world, it is easy to move quickly past what God is doing. But Mary took time to think, reflect, and hold onto what she had experienced. Changing our attitude means slowing down and giving space for God’s truth to settle in our hearts. It means valuing what He is doing and taking time to understand it. When our attitude shifts, we become more aware of His presence and more responsive to His work. Reflection deepens our faith and strengthens our connection to God.
Then we see an Instruction to Obey. In Luke 2:20 the shepherds returned “glorifying and praising God.” The instruction is to worship. When we recognize who Jesus is, our natural response should be praise. Worship is not limited to a moment—it is a lifestyle. Obedience in this area means giving God the honor He deserves in our daily lives. It means acknowledging Him in our words, our actions, and our attitudes. When we worship, we align our hearts with truth and express our gratitude for what He has done.
Next, we come to a Sin to Confess. This chapter reveals the sin of indifference—failing to recognize or respond to Jesus. While some rejoiced, others missed the significance of what was happening. We must confess any area where we have become distracted or uninterested in what God is doing. Indifference can keep us from experiencing the fullness of His presence. When we bring this before God, He renews our awareness and draws us closer to Him. Confession helps us stay engaged and responsive to His work.
Finally, we see an Example to Follow. The shepherds are a powerful example. After encountering Jesus, they shared what they had seen and heard. They didn’t keep it to themselves—they told others. This is our example. When we experience God’s truth, we are called to share it. Our faith is not meant to be hidden. The shepherds responded with joy, obedience, and boldness. We are called to do the same. When we follow this example, we become part of what God is doing in the world, sharing His message and reflecting His love.
Let’s close by going to the Lord in prayer.
