In Luke Chapter 4, Jesus is led by the Spirit into the wilderness and is tempted by the devil, responding each time with Scripture, saying, “It is written…” (Luke 4:4). After overcoming temptation, He begins His ministry and declares, “The Spirit of the Lord is on Me… to preach good news to the poor” (Luke 4:18). Though rejected in His hometown, He continues in His mission, teaching with authority, casting out demons, and healing the sick. The chapter shows both resistance and power, reminding us that God’s calling is not dependent on people’s acceptance.

Welcome to Giving God PRAISE. This is a podcast where we walk through the entire Bible book by book and chapter by chapter. Our goal is to discover not only what God’s Word says, but what it means to praise God in our daily life. In each episode, we explore a Promise to Claim, a Response to Make, an Attitude to Change, an Instruction to Obey, a Sin to Confess, and an Example to Follow. So let’s go ahead and grab our Bibles and dive into today’s teaching.
Today we are studying Luke Chapter 4. This chapter reveals the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry, where He is tested, rejected, and yet walks in power and purpose. It shows us that before stepping into calling, there is often testing. Jesus demonstrates victory over temptation, clarity in identity, and authority in mission. As we walk through this chapter, we are reminded that God equips us to overcome, calls us to stand firm in truth, and empowers us to live with purpose even in the face of opposition and resistance.
First, we see a Promise to Claim. In Luke 4:18 Jesus reads, “The Spirit of the Lord is on Me, because He has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor… to proclaim freedom to the captives.” This promise reminds us that God brings freedom, healing, and restoration. What Jesus came to do then, He still does today. No matter what holds you captive—fear, sin, or brokenness—there is freedom available through Him. This is not just a past event, but a present reality. We can claim this promise and walk in the freedom He offers.
Next is a Response to Make. In Luke 4:8 Jesus says, “It is written: Worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.” Our response is to center our lives on God alone. When faced with temptation or distraction, we must choose to worship and serve Him above everything else. This means putting Him first in our priorities, decisions, and daily lives. Worship is not just what we say—it is how we live. We are called to respond by giving God our full devotion.
Now let’s consider an Attitude to Change. In Luke 4:28 it says, “When they heard this, everyone in the synagogue was enraged.” The people rejected Jesus because His message challenged them. This reveals an attitude of resistance to truth. We must move from defensiveness to openness. When God speaks, even if it’s uncomfortable, we are called to receive it rather than reject it. A teachable heart allows God to work deeply within us.
Then we see an Instruction to Obey. In Luke 4:4 Jesus answers, “It is written: Man must not live on bread alone.” The instruction is to depend on God’s Word. Just as we need physical food, we need spiritual nourishment. We are called to live by His Word daily, allowing it to guide our thoughts, actions, and decisions. Obedience to Scripture strengthens us and prepares us for life’s challenges.
Next we come to a Sin to Confess. In Luke 4:13 it says, “After the devil had finished every temptation, he departed from Him for a time.” This reminds us of the ongoing reality of temptation. The sin to confess is giving in to those temptations. Whether it’s compromise, pride, or distraction, we must bring it before God and seek His strength. Victory begins with honesty and surrender.
Finally, we see an Example to Follow. In Luke 4:43 Jesus says, “It is necessary for Me to proclaim the good news about the kingdom of God… because I was sent for this purpose.” Jesus remained focused on His mission. This is our example—to live with purpose. We are called to stay committed to what God has called us to do, even when it’s difficult or unpopular.
Luke Chapter 4 reminds us that we are not powerless—we are equipped through God’s Word and Spirit. It calls us to stand firm in truth, walk in freedom, remain focused on our purpose, and trust God in every situation.
