Today we are studying John Chapter 17. In this chapter, Jesus prays to the Father just before His arrest and crucifixion. He prays for Himself, for His disciples, and for all future believers. This prayer reveals His heart for unity, truth, protection, and eternal life. He declares in John 17:3, “This is eternal life: that they may know You, the only true God, and the One You have sent—Jesus Christ.” This chapter shows us that Jesus is not only our Savior—He is also our intercessor. He is praying for us, covering us, and calling us into a life of truth and unity.

Welcome to Giving God Praise. This is a podcast where we walk through the entire Bible, book by book and chapter by chapter. Our desire is to discover not only what God's Word says, but what it means to praise God in our daily life. In each episode, we explore a promise to claim, a response to make, an attitude to change, an instruction to obey, a sin to confess, and an example to follow. So let's go ahead and grab our Bibles and dive into today's teaching. Today we are studying John chapter 17. In this chapter, Jesus prays to the Father just before his arrest and crucifixion. He prays for himself, for his disciples, and for all future believers. This prayer reveals his heart for unity, truth, protection, and eternal life. He declares in John 17 3, This is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and the one you have sent, Jesus Christ. This chapter shows us that Jesus is not only our Savior, he is also our intercessor. He is praying for us, covering us, and calling us into a life of truth and unity. Let's begin reading John chapter 17. Jesus spoke these things, looked up to heaven, and said, Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, so that the Son may glorify you, for you gave him authority over all flesh, so he may give eternal life to all you have given him. This is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and the one you have sent, Jesus Christ. I have glorified you on the earth by completing the work you gave me to do. Now, Father, glorify me in your presence, with that glory I had with you before the world existed. I have revealed your name to the men you gave me from the world. They were yours, you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that all things you have given to me are from you, because the words that you gave me, I have given them. They have received them and have known for certain that I came from you. They have believed that you sent me, I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, because they are yours. Everything I have is yours, and everything you have is mine, and I have been glorified in them. I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by your name that you have given me, so that they may be one as we are one. While I was with them, I was protecting them by your name that you have given me. I guarded them, and not one of them is lost, except the Son of Destruction, so that the Scripture may be fulfilled. Now I am coming to you, and I speak these things in the world, so that they may have my joy completed in them. I have given them your word. The world hated them because they are not of the world, as I am not of the world. I am not praying that you take them out of the world, but that you protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world as I am not of the world. Sanctify them by the truth. Your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. I sanctify myself for them, so they also may be sanctified by the truth. I pray not only for these, but also for those who believe in me through their message. May they all be one as you, Father, are in me, and I am in you. May they also be one in us, so the world may believe you sent me. I have given them the glory you have given me. May they be one as we are one. I am in them, and you are in me. May they be made completely one, so the world may know you have sent me, and have loved them as you have loved me. Father, I desire those you have given me to be with me where I am. Then they will see my glory, which you have given me because you loved me before the world's foundation. Righteous Father, the world has not known you. However, I have known you, and these have known that you sent me. I made your name known to them and will make it known, so the love you have loved me with may be in them, and I may be in them. Let's take a moment to pause, reflect, and turn our hearts toward God. Heavenly Father, thank you for the truth of John chapter 17 and the powerful reminder that Jesus prays for us. Thank you that we are not alone, but covered by his love, his truth, and his intercession. Lord, help us to know you more deeply, because eternal life is found in relationship with you. Protect us from the influence of the world and the attacks of the enemy. Sanctify us by your truth and let your word shape our lives. Help us to walk in unity with other believers and reflect your love to the world around us. Let the prayer of Jesus be fulfilled in our lives. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.

Now that we've read God's Word and prepared our hearts in prayer, let's begin our praise study and listen to what God wants to say to our hearts today. In John chapter 17, we see a powerful promise to claim in Jesus' declaration of eternal life and his prayer for our protection and unity. Jesus defines eternal life clearly in verse 3, that they may know you, the only true God, and the one you have sent, Jesus Christ. This means eternal life is not just about the future. It begins now through a relationship with God. He also prays that the Father would protect us from the evil one, reminding us that we are not left defenseless in a broken world. Another promise is found in his desire that we would be with him and see his glory. This shows us that our future is secure and filled with purpose. Jesus is actively interceding for us, asking the Father to guard us, unify us, and keep us in truth. This promise gives us confidence that we are seen, known, and covered by Christ Himself. No matter what we face, we can trust that Jesus is praying for us and that God is working to bring us into His presence and glory. The response to make in this chapter is to pursue a real relationship with God and live in unity with other believers. Jesus makes it clear that eternal life is knowing God, so our response must be to seek Him personally and consistently. This means spending time in His Word, in prayer, and in obedience. We are also called to respond by receiving the truth of God's word and allowing it to shape our lives. Jesus said his disciples received the word and believed it, and that same response is required of us. Another key response is to pursue unity. Jesus repeatedly prayed that believers would be one. This means we must let go of division, pride, and offense and choose to walk in love and humility. Unity is not optional, it is part of our witness to the world. When we live in unity, we reflect the nature of God. Our response is to know Him deeply, walk in truth, and actively pursue unity with others in the body of Christ. This chapter calls us to change our attitude from worldly thinking to a kingdom perspective. Jesus makes it clear that we are not of the world, even though we live in it. We must change from thinking like the world to thinking according to God's truth. This means letting go of values that are rooted in pride, self-interest, and temporary gain, and embracing values like humility, obedience, and eternal purpose. Another attitude to change is from isolation to unity. It is easy to become disconnected or focused only on ourselves. But Jesus calls us into oneness with other believers. We must also change from passive faith to intentional growth. Jesus prayed for our sanctification, which means we are called to actively pursue holiness. This requires a shift in mindset. We are not meant to stay the same. God is continually shaping us through his word. A changed attitude recognizes that we belong to God, live for his purposes, and are being transformed daily by his truth. The instruction to obey in this chapter is to live in truth, pursue unity, and carry out the mission we have been given. Jesus says, Sanctify them by the truth, your word is truth, which means we are instructed to live according to God's word. This is not just about knowing Scripture, it is about obeying it. We are also instructed to be one as believers. Jesus' repeated prayer for unity shows that this is a command, not a suggestion. We must intentionally choose love, forgiveness, and humility in our relationships. Another instruction is to remain in the world while living differently from it. Jesus did not ask for us to be removed from the world, but to be protected within it. This means we are called to influence the world without becoming like it. Finally, we are instructed to continue the mission. Jesus said, As you sent me, I also have sent them. We are sent to represent Him, share truth, and reflect His love. Obedience means living with purpose, unity, and truth every day. The sin to confess in this chapter is living disconnected from God, His truth, and His people. If eternal life is knowing God, then neglecting that relationship is a serious issue. We must confess when we prioritize other things over time with Him. Another sin to confess is division. Jesus prayed for unity, so when we allow pride, offense, or bitterness to divide us from other believers, we are working against His prayer. We must also confess conformity to the world. Jesus said we are not of the world, yet it is easy to adopt its values and priorities. When we compromise truth or pursue worldly approval, we step outside of God's design. Another sin to confess is ignoring our calling. Jesus has sent us into the world, and when we fail to live with purpose or share our faith, we neglect that responsibility. Confession is about realignment. It brings us back into relationship with God, restores unity, and refocuses our lives on truth and purpose. The example to follow in this chapter is Jesus Himself as He prays with purpose, love, and clarity. He models what it means to depend on the Father, to intercede for others, and to live with a clear mission. Jesus does not focus on himself alone. He prays for his disciples and for future believers. This shows us the importance of praying for others and investing in their spiritual growth. He also models obedience, having completed the work the Father gave him to do. This challenges us to live with the same commitment to God's calling in our lives. Another example is his desire for unity. Jesus values oneness so deeply that he prays for it repeatedly. This shows us how important relationships within the body of Christ truly are. Following his example means living with purpose, praying for others, walking in obedience, and prioritizing unity. It means aligning our lives with God's will and caring deeply about his people. John chapter 17 reminds us that Jesus is praying for us, calling us into relationship, unity, and truth. This is not a distant idea, it is a present reality. You are known, loved, and covered by the prayers of Christ. That should bring both comfort and responsibility. We are called to live differently, to pursue God deeply and to reflect his love to others. Take time today to examine your relationship with God. Are you truly seeking Him? Are you walking in unity with others? Are you living according to His truth? This chapter challenges us to align our lives with the prayer of Jesus. If this message encouraged you, share it with someone who needs to be reminded that they are not alone, that Jesus is interceding for them. Let this truth shape your life, your relationships, and your purpose. Stay rooted in God's Word, walk in unity, and live with the confidence that your life is part of something eternal. If this message encouraged you, share it with someone who needs to be reminded that following Jesus is worth everything. Let's bring this time to a close by lifting our hearts to the Lord in prayer. Heavenly Father, we are so grateful that our listeners chose to spend their time with us in your word today. Thank you for the truth of John chapter 17 and the powerful reminder that Jesus is praying for us. Thank you that we are known, loved, protected, and called into unity and truth through Him. Lord, help us to know you more deeply, because eternal life is found in relationship with you. Teach us to walk in unity with other believers and to reflect your love in a divided world. Strengthen us to live according to your truth and not be shaped by the world around us. Protect our hearts from the enemy and establish us in holiness as we follow you. Help us to live with purpose, knowing that we are sent into the world just as Jesus was sent. We pray that this message would encourage every listener and that they would feel led to share it with someone who needs this truth today. May God bless you and keep you in his grace. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
