"Because I said so." "Money doesn't grow on trees." "If your friends jumped off a bridge, would you?" We all grew up hearing the same phrases from our parents—and at the time, most of us rolled our eyes. But somewhere along the way, those words started to make a whole lot more sense.

In this episode, we're taking a trip down memory lane as we laugh through the iconic sayings that shaped a generation and our childhood. From hilarious one-liners to the lessons hidden behind them, we're unpacking the wisdom our parents were trying to teach us all along. Join us for a conversation full of nostalgia, lots of laughter, and the realization that... maybe they were talking about after all.

SPEAKER_01

Hey guys, welcome back to the Live Me with Grace and Stas podcast. We are your co-hosts, Katie and Sierra, and we have thought about having a little spin-off episode. Um a while back we kind of had a conversation where we were talking about phrases our parents have said to us growing up, and after talking with some of our friends, we've also realized that their parents have said the same thing too to them. So we thought it'd be fun to just kind of talk about some of those. We've literally been laughing since we hit the record on this episode. So I hope you get some laughs out of it too. And let us know for sure what your parents have said to you if you haven't heard it in this, and because we love the laugh, it's quite hilarious. So Katie, I'm gonna let you start us off with yours.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, so I thought of this the other day because I have the same exact thought, and I was like, oh geez, I've turned into my mother. It's it, it's it's here we are in life. Um, but the one my mom used to say all the time that I was like, that is so stupid, was I'm not driving all the way across town. And I was like, that's so dumb. I live in such a small town, literally. Um but now let me tell you, I definitely get it because I'm like, well, now there's more traffic even than there was 30 years ago. But I legit was not going to drive from Thompson to Walmart the other day because I was gonna have to drive all the way across town. And I'm like, I totally get it now. I totally understand why my mom was like, no, we already came to this side of town, we're not going back to that side of town.

SPEAKER_01

So the funny part is we don't know the area that she lives in. They're both on the same street.

SPEAKER_00

They are, but they're on the literally opposite sides of town. Or she'd be like, no, because that's across the railroad tracks. We're not going on the other side of the railroad tracks. And if you've been to Gainesville, you know it's because you're gonna get stuck by a train going both directions. Yes. I get it now. I do not have time or patience to drive all the way across town. So now I understand why I've turned into my mother, and I will not be driving all the way across town.

SPEAKER_01

No. It's uh it's you definitely have to plan out your day. I live in an even smaller town, so I don't even have a grocery store. Yeah, a grocery store is Dollar General when they just recently got produced. Yeah. Um, so definitely if it's from Walmart, um no. You're gonna wait until I actually have to go in.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, like when you have to make a trip into town, right? That was our other thing because we lived out in the country, so it's like a 20-minute drive, so it was like, no, we're not going back into town for this. Um, I do get it now. Like, yeah, facts. We're not, it's not happening. Ain't nobody at town for this. Exactly.

SPEAKER_01

Um, my mom would always say, Oh, it would make me so mad too, is um, I'm not asking, I'm telling. When she obviously would like tell us to do something, and we'll say why, or be argumentative, because you're gonna learn some from some of these. I was definitely an argumentative child. Um, but she would always say, Go clean your room, and when we don't, she's like, I'm not asking, I'm telling. And that was the warning. This is your chance. Yes. If you don't do it now, the repercussions are not gonna be good.

SPEAKER_00

I'm giving you the opportunity. Yes. Oh, I've I've probably said that to my children a few times.

SPEAKER_01

I've said it to some athletes. Like, it would just slip out. And the first time it did, I was like, oh. It makes sense. Yeah, exactly. But just do what I ask. Do your rehab thing. Yes.

SPEAKER_00

Now I'm like, oh wow, my parents did actually know things.

SPEAKER_01

Mm-hmm. I actually were right. Mom, I know you're listening. You were right. This is my only recorded time. You're gonna hear me say this.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I'm not gonna say it again. Um, this one makes me laugh because you and I both said it. But our parents used to say, no, we have food at home. And that meant I don't care if you're hungry right now, you're gonna wait till we get home because we're not getting something while we're out.

SPEAKER_01

It's a way till you get home, but you have to cook it. But I'm gonna go when it's your money you have to spend. You're definitely telling yourself, no, I have food at home.

SPEAKER_00

Yep, it's fine. The number of times my kids are like, Can we get a snack? No, we have food at home. I'm like, but I'm hungry. I don't care. We have food at home.

SPEAKER_01

And she gets the oh yes.

SPEAKER_00

Also, my parents are probably like, oh, pay back. That was another thing, like, oh, just wait till you have a kid just like you someday.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh, yes. Oh. Even now, the the blame that my niece is like me. She can't raise her little scare. I'm like, hey, hey, hey. We all had attitude. Don't even. Don't even. Oh my gosh. These are too funny. It's like going down memory lane.

SPEAKER_02

I agree.

SPEAKER_01

Um, oh, this one, I think Dave Ramsey would totally approve of it because we're doing Dave Ramsey right now. Is that a want or a need? Oh, yeah, for sure. Because I still have to tell myself this, because I am a chopaholic, I will admit. But I will have to say, do I need this right now? Is that a want or a need? I agree. Because growing up, it's very much, oh, I need this, I need this, I need this. And no.

SPEAKER_00

My parents and I did not have the same idea on what was a want and what was a need. No. And the same is true for my own children. Hey, we we they raised great debaters. That's true. At least now my kids know that we're doing financial peace with Dave Ramsey. So now my son would be like, I know you're doing Dave Ramsay, but can I have not a budget and not put it in every dollar?

SPEAKER_01

You could start saving if you wanted that bad. Exactly. Because the funny thing is, is when we were kids and we would save our things and it's time to spend it. Uh, I really like to hold on to this money now.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, for real. Do you wish we would have thought, like, carried those same habits through to adulthood?

SPEAKER_01

Yes, indeed.

SPEAKER_00

Oh my gosh. Um, my dad's favorite phrase, still to this day, is life's not fair. He'll still be like, What do I always say? Life's not fair. So he and I'm like, you know what? It's not. You're right.

SPEAKER_01

And he was like, anytime I hear a kid in just the close proximity saying that's not fair, like my brain says, Life's not fair. Exactly.

SPEAKER_00

Too bad. Or he would sometimes tag on life's tub, get a helmet. Oh, yeah. And I'm like, yeah, you're right. It is.

SPEAKER_01

I need a t-shirt that says that.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

That's a good one. Um, my one of my friends, she's a softball coach. She um, I think it came from I don't know if it was her college or high school, but uh they had a phrase that she has carried into her program was nobody cares for Carter. Oh, that's true. I'm like, that's kind of up there with the life sets, like, yeah, deal with it.

SPEAKER_00

Exactly.

SPEAKER_01

I'm like, dang.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that's true. That is such a good life, like, lesson to know. Yeah, that is a good one.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my god. Um, so this comes from being a problematic child sometimes. Not you. Mom would say. Oh I'm getting triggered. No. Um, she would say, you can trust me or you can try me. That was another, this is your warning. This is your warning, Sierra. And eight times out of ten, I definitely tried her. I wanted to see. Or like when they'll count, I'm counting to three. I wanted to see what happened after three.

SPEAKER_00

I thought you were gonna say eight out of ten times, I like it worked. But you're saying only two out of ten times that phrase worked.

SPEAKER_01

I was a hard-headed kid.

SPEAKER_00

I'm raising a hard-headed child. Who will legit let me count to three and be like, what are you gonna do?

SPEAKER_01

Hey, just know she's gonna become very strong-willed.

SPEAKER_00

Great.

SPEAKER_01

Thrilled, growing pains, okay. Thrilled by that. Yeah, you can you can steal that.

SPEAKER_00

You can trust me, you can try me. Oh, it's funny. They try you a lot, but yeah, she will for sure. Um, my parents also always said, and I say this to my kids all the time, I'm your parent, not your friend. And that meant like, sorry, I'm still the boss. We ain't little besties, we're not doing whatever you want to do. Still got rules. Yes. I'm the one in charge. And my mom would be like, if I do my job right, then someday we get to be friends.

SPEAKER_01

Man.

SPEAKER_00

Like, okay, that's true.

SPEAKER_01

It's true now. Yeah, it is. Then friends with my mom crooks.

SPEAKER_00

But we did a whole episode on how we love our moms. And the great thing our moms, the our moms taught us.

SPEAKER_01

The great patience they had with us.

SPEAKER_00

No, I'm just cracking up because of like the things that every mom apparently says or every 90s mom said. Yes. I don't know that I don't it wasn't just us.

SPEAKER_01

Nope. Our moms weren't indeed crazy. Maybe a little bit, maybe. So we can just decipher that later. Um, oh, this one actually, when it finally, when I finally understood it, I've actually carried it into adulthood and really emphasized on it. Is it's not what you say, it's how you say it.

SPEAKER_00

That's a good one.

SPEAKER_01

Because a lot of times in my head, I'm saying something this way, especially if I was arguing with a friend or got in trouble with the teacher because of my mouth. I said it this way, but it definitely didn't come out of my mouth that way. And so even now as an adult, like I don't want to say I have to be cautious of like who I'm around, but I realized like the way I can present things, some people can easily misread it, and it can just become a whole thing, and it's like, whoa, I wasn't even like that. Right. Or I will never have an argument with someone over text message.

SPEAKER_00

That's because subject of life lesson, right there.

SPEAKER_01

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_00

You cannot read tone or anything.

SPEAKER_01

No matter how many emojis or you could put on there, it could still be misread. So kids, do not have arguments over text message. It sounds easy, but it definitely makes situations ten times harder.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, don't say anything that is like of real value in a like that needs to be said through a text message.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Definitely impressive on that. Um, okay, this this one I was like, this makes me cringe because the number of times I say this, and in my head, I'm like, stop saying this, is just because I said so. Ha! That's why. That's why you're in here. Because I said so. My parents will tell me that all the time. All the time. At least two times a day. Yes. And you know, it's funny because like when we did foster care, you have to like take all these parenting classes and like then doing pediatric therapy, they're always like, don't just say because I said so. I'm like, dude. I know it in my head like yeah educationally, but I still say it to my kids all the time. Because it makes sense. Yeah, my parents used to say it because I said so. I'm the boss, you're not. Let's just do it. Just do it. I'm the adult, you're the child. Exactly. Mom will say that too. Yep. I say that with my children all the time. I've always am I a 90s mom in disguise? Um chat is for telling me. Oh my gosh. So the other day, we asked my niece, well, we asked my niece, and then we asked my kids too. Like, what is a phrase that your parents always say that annoys you? My niece said that my brother always tells her, I don't want you to be sorry, I want you to be better.

SPEAKER_01

Like, which as a was she 12?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

As a pretty teacher, I get like that's irritating, but it is valid because if you're sorry, that means you won't do it again. Right, if you change your behavior. Yes, exactly. But I can totally feel her eye rolling.

SPEAKER_00

I did laugh because we say to our kids, like, sorry doesn't fix anything. Meaning, like, yes, we think you should apologize, but if you don't change your behavior, it doesn't like sorry doesn't like solve everything.

SPEAKER_01

Yes.

SPEAKER_00

Um, and so I'm like, oh, my brother and I are both given the same personal advice to our kids.

SPEAKER_01

Kind of like that action speak louder than words. Like, don't say sorry, like show me your sorry. Exactly. Oh my gosh. Exactly. Too freaking funny. Um anytime I would like say, but so-and-so's doing it, or so-and-so's wearing this, or if I would try to say, and mom would say, like, no, you're not, yeah. And I would be argumentative. She'll so dumb, but she would say, if your friend jumps off a bridge, are you gonna jump too? The number of times I heard that phrase. Which doesn't work if you like adrenaline. Because I'm like, yeah, if we have a parachute on you off the thing.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I'm raising a kid that's like, yeah, I'm jumping off the bridge. Sounds like a great time.

SPEAKER_01

Like, you gotta know your child. Oh my gosh. My brother definitely could say that because he's not doing any kind of stuff like that. But me, I'm like, heck yeah, that sounds like fun. When are we going?

SPEAKER_00

That tracks with you, honestly. I'm not surprised by that one at all. Oh my god, oh my gosh. Um, did you get these two all the time? Like, money doesn't grow on trees, or does it look like I'm made of money? Yes.

SPEAKER_01

Seriously. Paper comes from trees. You would be that child. Argumentative.

SPEAKER_00

No one is surprised by this.

SPEAKER_01

I bring the sass to this. But tell me I'm wrong.

SPEAKER_02

No.

SPEAKER_00

Technically speaking, paper comes from trees.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my gosh. Too good, too good. Um, I know you've told your children this. Oh, jeez. And I've told my nieces and nephews this before, but the I love you, but I don't like you right now. Mom still will say that to me. If I get like, because we work together, so I have my days where I can be a little bit more snappy, just a little bit. And uh, she'll be like, I love you, but I don't like you right now.

SPEAKER_00

Dude, if you asked my mom to this day, how was Katie in sixth grade? Her response would be that, but like in the form of, if I could have sold her, I would have. Still to this day, that was the year that she definitely was like, I love that child, and I do not like her one single bit. Oh my god. I need to ask your mom. Oh, yeah, I guarantee you, I would bet money on it. She'll still be like, oh, if I could have sold her, I would have. I would not have felt bad about it.

SPEAKER_01

Um I uh mom would say sorry. She would say that no one would kidnap you because I'll just bring you right back.

SPEAKER_00

I got that all the time. Like, if they kidnapped you, they would just bring you right back. I mean, I say that about people that talk all the time, too. I've said that about a few people.

SPEAKER_01

They're safe, they're fine.

SPEAKER_00

Oh my gosh. Um also, I need to give the caveat that my parents didn't like fear parents, like they did not like I wasn't a fearful child. Like, I had a great childhood, very healthy. I don't have childhood trauma. But like some of these phrases, I'm like, I could have had a childhood trauma, but I don't, and I did it. My parents are fantastic. But I know you got this one too because it's you, like, don't make me pull this car over.

SPEAKER_01

Oh don't make me pull this car over, don't make me take you into the fitting room or the bathroom. Yeah, don't oh yes. Oh my gosh. Oh, my mom would uh she would take my fingers like in between hers, like intertwined, and she would roll my knuckles. But here's the high scene on the cake. We'll be I still remember we're in Walmart checkout line, and I'm acting up what's new, and she was doing it, and she as I'm like squealing and flopping around like a fish, crying, telling her to stop.

SPEAKER_00

You're about to get in more trouble because you're making like you're making a scene about it.

SPEAKER_01

She'll be like, honey, what's wrong? We're gonna leave soon. Oh my gosh. Anytime when someone's like, Your mom's so sweet, I'm like, if you only knew. If you were raised by her, I may have made her act like this, but if you only knew Oh my gosh.

SPEAKER_00

Oh my gosh. Oh don't make me pull don't make me pull this car over.

SPEAKER_01

There was one time that Devin actually made her pull the car over. And we would we lived in Virginia at this time, and Devin may have been five or six, and she pulled it over, but he was like this scrawny little kid. So he was Houdini in his car seat, like he could get out quickly. He got out. I'm sitting in the back seat with him, and she slams her door, goes to the back door to get to whoop him, yeah, and he quickly jumps into the front seat. She's going back to her seat, he jumps back. Like they were doing this for maybe two minutes. Which as a parent makes you even more interior. Like your blood pressure is skyrocketing right now, crazy in her eyes that day. Oh my gosh, and I'm just like, Devin, she's gonna kill you.

SPEAKER_00

Oh my gosh.

SPEAKER_01

I always joke about to my mom all the time. I don't know how you did it become an alcoholic by what my brother and I put her through. Like wholeheartedly. And she was a sing uh a single mom raised into crazy bad attitude children, and she did great. But man, we put her to the ring. That's what I'm always like. I'm sorry. She earned she earned her stars, myth. She did. Oh my gosh. Uh oh, have you heard this one? If you're gonna act like a child, I'm gonna treat you like one. I've said that one. I would say, I feel like I heard you say that to jail.

SPEAKER_00

I've said that one more than once. Uh yeah, I definitely that was definitely a phrase my parents like to say. Yeah. Um, did you get eat your dinner? There's starving children in the world. It was always Africa. There's starving children in Africa. Wait, why is it only Africa?

SPEAKER_01

I don't know. But yes. But no, I'm not eating those breakfast sprouts.

SPEAKER_00

That's how my four-year-old feels like dry right now. She's like, I don't really care, but I'm not eating breakfast. I you are not gonna guilt trip me into each other. Yeah, no, I cannot guilt trip her into eating it.

SPEAKER_01

Maybe that's why the guilt trip doesn't work on you anymore.

SPEAKER_00

Because you got it a lot as a child.

SPEAKER_01

It does not work. My brother still tries to guilt trip me. I'm like, boy bye. Good try. Okay, so this one, I just I had to look it up because I'm already laughing because I know where this is going.

SPEAKER_00

Oh my gosh.

SPEAKER_01

My mom would say the same, and then I remember asking her, like, what does that even mean? And okay, so the saying is um you've got more excuses than Carter has liver pills. And she would tell me because I'm like, what does oh, what does what does that have to do with the rice in China? That's another one she would say. What is it? I've never heard this one. Really? Okay, so she would say, like, I would say something and she would just say, What does that have to do with the rice in China? What's wrong with the rice in China? What does that have to do with it? But then you it makes sense because like like what does that matter? I'm about to start using that all the time. Because it makes your child glitch, because it would make me glitch, and I would like think about it, and then I forget what we're arguing about.

SPEAKER_00

The number of times I'm like, why are you even telling me whatever you're telling me right now?

SPEAKER_01

Now you can say, what does it have to do with the rice in China?

SPEAKER_00

I'm about to use that one.

unknown

So

SPEAKER_01

Back to my other one of you got more excuses than Carter has liver pills. She would tell me that um what was his name? President uh Jimmy Carter. Jimmy Carter. And listen, I don't I did not like history growing up. So uh Jimmy Carter uh had some kind of liver problem, so he had to take pills. And so it was his liver pills. Well, I literally before we got into this, I Googled because I'm like, is that really what it meant? I should have done this forever ago to be more argumentative with my mother. But no, it has nothing to do with him. It had to do with some some Carter Carter's Little Pills back in what was it, the 80s, I think. Um it hang on, totally looking it back up. Um oh, 19th and 20th centuries, whatever. Anyways, in the oh 1950s and 60s. I can read now, guys. But it was a spray I called Carter's Little Liver Pills that didn't treat liver conditions, it was a freaking laxative. Y'all, right before we started this, I'm like, I'm so mad.

SPEAKER_00

I'm about to call my mother and argue with her because I need to know if she knows that. Yeah. Does she know where the phrase actually came from, or did she just use it?

SPEAKER_01

Man, I wish I could just like call her right now. Oh, it's so funny. For real. She would all but she still says that. You've got more excuses than cornerized liver pills. Oh my gosh. It still just irritates me.

SPEAKER_00

So stupid. Oh my gosh. I know you got this one. Stop crying, or I'll give you something to cry about. Absolutely. Yeah, I got that one for sure. That's where I'm like, it sounds like I had a very traumatic childhood, but I really didn't. It was a really good childhood.

SPEAKER_01

No childhood trauma, just tacked on that one.

SPEAKER_00

Sometimes it would be um, I brought you into this world, I can take you out of it.

SPEAKER_01

Oh man, and and you see, the argumentative Sierra back as a child knew she legally couldn't do that because then she's going to jail. So then I would argue, no, you won't. No, you won't. No, you can't. And then here comes the spikes. Of course. Oh my gosh. Oh man. The things we put our parents through.

SPEAKER_00

It's so funny to me.

SPEAKER_01

Honey now.

SPEAKER_00

Also, I'm convinced that 90% of the people listening have also heard these phrases and gotten these phrases from their parents. Absolutely. Oh, to be raised in the 90s.

SPEAKER_01

Those are some good times. They are.

SPEAKER_00

I regret none of it.

SPEAKER_01

No. Man. Um, and I will also say, I'm so glad I was raised then versus now. Because one, life through 60 would have been a buzzkill.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, that would have been a huge problem for you. Not for me, because I was a good kid. I wasn't like bad, bad.

SPEAKER_01

But anyways, it would definitely have been a buzzkill.

SPEAKER_00

Someone told me a story just not that long ago of live 360 of like them going somewhere that their parents would not have been chill with them going to. And then their mom was like, Hey, why are you such and such place? And they ran across to a different restaurant. And they were like, I'm not. They're just beside each other.

SPEAKER_01

Um, that's genius. I am not encouraging. I wouldn't have thought of that, but that's I was like, that's pretty smart. So funny.

SPEAKER_00

So funny.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, you have to be home before the street lights come on.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yeah. I didn't get that one because we lived out in the country. So there was nowhere for us to roam around. There was no street lights. There's lots of places for us to roam around, but um there was no uh when the coyotes start going. Just be in by dark. Come on in when it gets dark. Um This is true memory when we were walking down. I know, I'm just laughing because like growing up out in the country too, there's just like so many things. Like, I don't know. I'm sure my mom had some phrase always about the dirt road and it having just rained, or her having oh, I know what it was. She would wash her car and then we would have to drive home on the dirt road. So, you know, we would drive like five miles an hour to make sure that our car did not get dirty. Oh, that's hard. And now I live on a dirt road and it drives her crazy every time she was driving my house and her car gets dirty. It is what it is. Where you get pulled over because you got someone's dirt. Oh my gosh. Yeah, that did happen. That's a true story. That police officer pulled me over because he couldn't see my license plate because it was so man, that is too funny how y'all are like same the similar same in so many ways, but then that you're definitely pulling off.

SPEAKER_01

You're like, I could care less, couldn't care less.

SPEAKER_00

No, literally, Nathan was like, just carry a bottle of water and just throw it on your license plate every once in a while to clean it off. It's funny because the car thing, because I went shopping with friends yesterday and I drove and my car is dirty as all get out because I live on dirt road and is caked in dirt. And I was like, I am not my mother. Because if I was, I would have washed my car before we went shopping. Because my mom will go wash her car before she goes anywhere, and I'm not digging on her when she listens to this. I'm not judging. I'm just saying, I am not as nice as her.

SPEAKER_01

She's totally judging you. She's probably like, oh my gosh, Katie.

SPEAKER_00

I'm like, sorry, you have dirt all over you from my car. My bad. Whoops. But no, my mom will go wash her car before she has to drive people anywhere. Which is so true because I remember when we were going to Fredericksburg and we had to go to the car wash, and I'm like, people do this when she took the kids to Houston before, um, or like to see my aunt a few weeks ago and we were supposed to go, but then you know, I couldn't go, but my kids went. Um, and I looked on live 360 and they were at the car wash, and I was like, Yep, it's truck, it's fitting. I'm just not my mom. My mom will also never live on a dirt road again. But I'm like, give me the dirtiest dirt road you can find. I don't care.

SPEAKER_01

Don't care at all.

SPEAKER_00

I don't.

SPEAKER_01

I'm like, if you wash a car, it is just gonna get dirty again.

SPEAKER_00

I know. But Nathan washes the cars for me all the time, but it just gets dirty again.

SPEAKER_01

I do like to have my car detailed, but that's like once a year because I have dogs and my niece and nephews getting the car, and I am not one of those keep everything nice and clean in the car. I'm definitely I got shoes and a pair of shorts and backpacks and all kinds of things in my car.

SPEAKER_00

No, I do like to keep my car like picked up, it's not cluttered. You know, I have a basket between my kids' bucket seats that has like a hand vacuum. So I do try to keep the inside of my car picked up and cleaned up. But the dirt, it is that my dad used to say that phrase, a little dirt never hurt. Man, yeah, I knew we were gonna circle back around. Or the dirt don't don't hurt. Yeah, exactly. Exactly. Especially when I dropped to say that all the time. Yeah, I'm sure that was the context of that. Like a little dirt never hurt. Or rub some dirt on it.

unknown

Oh.

SPEAKER_00

Like when you like scrape your leg or something. Yes. Rub some dirt on it, keep going, you're fine.

SPEAKER_01

I have definitely said that. Don't actually do that. No. The sad part is, is as an athletic trainer, I say that mainly to middle school kids because they scrape and it's the end of the world. Yeah. I'm like, throw some dirt on it, you're fine. As I'm cleaning it, don't worry, I don't really actually do that. But yeah, it's fine.

SPEAKER_00

It's fine.

SPEAKER_01

You'll survive. Why aren't you drop your leg off? It's fine.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Is that another phrase that your parent that your mom used to say?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, well, I don't know if my mom, I don't know where I picked it up, but just like maybe it's just been coaches to say if it's that bad, we'll just cut it off. Oh, so see, maybe it's just a I don't know if necessarily it's just parents, just adults.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

With dramatic children. Just you're fine.

SPEAKER_00

Oh. Is it hurting that bad? Do you want me to just go ahead and do that? Exactly. I'm like, I got scissor right here. Yeah, exactly. Oh my gosh. We are well-adjusted adults. Oh, facts. Very productive members of society. With no trauma. Zero. I mean, I don't know about you, but I don't.

SPEAKER_01

I'm good. Okay. I'm zeroed now. We've worked through it. We're good. See, there you go. But mine was definitely not from my mom. Oh my gosh. Oh, have you ever heard do as I say not as I do? Oh, yes. Which now that I have a niece who um I'm with like a lot, and she's so uh monkey see monkey do. Yes, I'm like, I have to be careful. Yeah. And I definitely will find myself saying, Do as I say not as I do.

SPEAKER_00

No, I do at that one.

SPEAKER_01

That's hard. Especially when as the on the adult side, when you have to argue, do as I say not as I do. And I'm like, should I be doing this? Yeah, I'm good. Yeah, I'm fine. It's gonna be like, I'm eating two cookies, you only get one. Exactly.

SPEAKER_00

Um, I know you got this one because you told me you argued with someone about it. Of like, don't swallow that gum, it'll stay in your stomach for seven years.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, this is literally a lady at work because she would get mad at me because I would spit my gum out into the trash can, and I'm I am not a let me wrap my gum up, I just spit it out because it's trash. Why would I make extra trash? Right? And so she would tell me just to swallow it, and so I would argue, you can't swallow gum, it doesn't digest, and she just looked at me like, Are you serious? So we had a whole education lesson with Google. And does it actually digest?

SPEAKER_00

Yes. Well, okay, but in your defense, I do feel like it's probably not the best thing for your gut to just swallow a bunch of gum.

SPEAKER_01

No, and I am one of those literally, I chewed five str five pieces of gum yesterday within seven hour period at work. Yeah, like I made me in some anxiety. I just like I need something to chew. Yeah, or I'm chewing the inside of my gum. And anyways, so if you consume that much gum, then it's not gonna be healthy. So I'm still right.

SPEAKER_00

I'm definitely not a swallow your gum person, anyways. Even if it doesn't stay in my stomach for seven years, I'm definitely spitting it out.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, because it has a nasty taste. Why do I want that in my tummy? No. But the seven-year thing, maybe a little Oh, have you ever heard the don't swallow watermelon seeds because you'll grow watermelon? That one, okay, that got that traumatized me. I was terrified. Really? Yes. I was like, I can't drink water. I'm gonna grow plant.

SPEAKER_00

That one, that definitely got my grandpa grew watermelons every year. So I heard that one a lot. Um, I also hate watermelon. Which is odd for someone who's grandpa grew watermelons all the time. And I always have fresh watermelon, but I just don't like it. I don't know.

SPEAKER_01

Do you like watermelon flavored things? No.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, absolutely not. Okay, good. That's watermelon flavor is horrible. Way worse compared, like, if I had to pick between watermelon or watermelon watermelon flavoring, I would eat watermelon. Yes.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, okay. That just means more watermelon for me, so it's okay.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, my kids love it, not me. I'm out on that one. One time we did have a watermelon seed spitting contest when our whole family went to Colorado. Yeah, we did. It was fun. I don't know who won, but it was fun. We did that. Like with my whole my dad's whole family. So yeah. My grandpa enjoyed it. He probably won. Who knows?

SPEAKER_01

Probably.

SPEAKER_00

Also, now in hindsight, I'm like, I wonder how many rogue watermelon plants they had pop up by that riverside the next year.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, that's all those watermelons.

SPEAKER_00

I don't know.

SPEAKER_01

That is actually really funny. Did you ever uh have you ever been told about the the the lights in the car? Turn them off we're gonna like you're gonna get pulled over?

SPEAKER_00

Yes. Is it legal to turn lights on in the dark? Yes. I still struggle. Yes. So I I know my husband was told that too, because we've talked about it. And we do tell our kids, like, no, you can't turn them on. You have to leave them off. You're gonna get a pulled over. Yes. What where did that even come from? But like we I've had conversations with multiple friends. Um, I think that came up at community group one time and someone said that. Yeah, but their parents told them that.

SPEAKER_01

I'm gonna target, I'm totally gonna Google and see what it's ever illegal.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's such a random thing, but it definitely is a common phrase. Um were did you get um Were you born in a barn? Mom still says that because I burnt. I thought the context of that was like, close the door. Don't let the don't let all the air out. My parents didn't know that. No, were you born in a barn? Shut the door, don't let all the air out.

SPEAKER_01

Mom will say that when I burnt her own people. She's like, sorry, she was right to the barn.

unknown

Oh my gosh.

SPEAKER_00

I want to know if there's a different context for that one. I was laughing today because we had to pull our dryer out and the door had to be open. And my husband said, Close the the utility room door because I don't want to let I'm not trying to run up the light bill or something like that. And I I was like, you're letting all the bond air out. Because that's what they say on Sweet Home Alabama, and I love that movie. He's like, Y'all come on in, you're letting all the bond air out. I love that you just put the accent with it. You know what every listener on this podcast is gonna be like I'm done. They're gonna love it or they're gonna hate it. Oh I don't really care either way. Oh, it's been a myth. What was it? I don't even remember. Oh, the lights in the car. That's funny. It's just a myth. Someone just came up with it and every parent in the 90s took off with it.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, it can it creates reflection on the windshield and reduces your ability to see dark road ahead. So you know it's not illegal, it's just not safe. Yes. Well, they could have just said that. You're gonna have to scare us. Oh. Um, I just thought of another one and now I forgot it.

SPEAKER_00

Did you get like if you keep making that face, it's gonna stick like that? Or if you keep crossing your eyes, they're gonna stuck be stuck like that.

SPEAKER_01

Or fix your face, or I'll fix it for you.

unknown

Oh, right.

SPEAKER_01

Still haven't figured that out. I'm about to slap that look off your face. I have been at better control of my tongue. My face still gives me away.

SPEAKER_00

Also, never been slapped by my parents. So I guess I was able to get that look off my face.

SPEAKER_01

I wonder if it actually like, you know, they'll say, like, don't cross your eyes, they'll get stuck. Uh-huh. I'm sure over time, but like, if there was an actual force, would it actually cause your face to be stuck? Where's the mythbusters? No, seriously.

SPEAKER_00

Do you remember that show? Yes, I do. They had like a huge falling out. They didn't actually like each other. But just for that? No. Yeah. Dang. I didn't know that until recently. Yeah, they actually did not like each other. The whole time? Yeah, I think it was like a big thing. Oh, the drama. I know. I know. They felt like they were buddies. Wow. I had no clue until recently. See? What was I gonna say?

SPEAKER_01

I don't remember. There was a Oh, it was another phrase. Uh I don't remember. Oh, do you know the don't judge a book by its cover?

SPEAKER_00

Oh yes, yeah. That's a good life one. That is, I agree with you. Because that is a good life lesson.

SPEAKER_01

Different aspects in life. You could n you should judge a book by its cover.

SPEAKER_00

For a lot of things, yeah. You can uh yeah make the wrong like decision or impression of something without actually knowing. That's true. That is true.

SPEAKER_01

I've actually been told that they judged me before they knew me by people.

SPEAKER_00

Really?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Because they think I'm mean because I I don't have a constant smiling face. I'm also a little aggressive, so they think I'm mean. Yeah. You know those that that trend on maybe it was TikTok or Instagram. I don't even know. It's like, what's it looks like a cinnamon roll? It is a cinnamon roll. Looks like a kill you, looks looks like they could kill you. No. I don't know. But I'm look like I could kill you, but I'm a cinnamon roll.

SPEAKER_00

You're a cinnamon roll inside. Yeah. You're all nice and sweet.

SPEAKER_01

You just gotta dig deep. I'm skitty. No, you don't. Just don't talk to me before 9.30 in the morning. I'm not a cinnamon roll.

SPEAKER_00

Big facts. Even if she's on a girl's trip, it doesn't matter.

SPEAKER_01

We've had some friends who are who wake up and ready to see the day. And I'm like, get away from me until 9, please. I love you, but go away. Hey, we just I just learned that another one of our friends was like that.

SPEAKER_00

I'm gonna have to ask you who after this is done recording because I won't call that person out by putting their name on a podcast. Yeah. So pin in that. I'd like to know who. I hope you remember later because I might forget. Yeah. Um, is there any other phrases that you can think of?

SPEAKER_01

No, but I'm glad to know that my mom wasn't just this singled-out crazy person growing up.

SPEAKER_00

I did laugh because we asked my my kids this, and we asked my daughter, who's four, and she couldn't think of anything that I say that annoys her, but she was quick to tell me that it annoys her when I vacuum while she's trying to watch TV. So I'm glad to know that I'm doing my parental duty and I'm being annoying to my children. We'll check back in five years in some way or another. Yeah, no kidding. If you want to know things that she says to me that I don't like, I've got a whole long list of those things.

SPEAKER_01

For me, for kids, it's the adding the uh at the end of stuff. I'm sorry, uh okay uh oh oh I'm like I feel my mama coming through for real. There was one time that my mom and I were in Walmart, and there was this kid with his mom down the aisle, and he was definitely being disrespectful to his mom. And I looked at my mom and I just I was like, I just blacked out because all I can think of, if I said that to you, I'd wake up and on Tuesday. Like I would not remember what happened after that.

SPEAKER_00

She did not play, she still doesn't play, but she's cute, she is cute, she heard her call a waitress on a trip one time and pretend to be my mom and ripp that manager a new one about how professionally, not rude, not tacky, yeah, not tacky, but she ripped that manager a new one in regards to how rude his waitress was.

SPEAKER_01

We were all just sitting there like, oh my gosh.

SPEAKER_00

She is cute, but she's got attitude that can come out.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, she's a savage.

SPEAKER_00

So we hope you guys have enjoyed this episode that you have taken a walk back down memory lane as we have, just laughing at all the things that our parents have said, that other parents have said, that apparently we now also say. Um so we hope you've enjoyed this. Uh, and like Sierra said, if you think of a phrase that your parents used to say that we did not talk about, um, I would love to hear them. So send us a message, post it in the comments um for the episode, anything like that. We would love to laugh and know what other crazy things parents have said and have been saying. So um, we just wanted to wrap up today again with another verse. Um, even in just the funny of also parents are good is a good gift from the Lord that we have parents, and scripture is also clear on obeying our parents, um, honoring them. And Proverbs 13:1 says, A wise son hears his father's instruction, but a scoffer does not listen to rebuke. So sometimes even when they seem crazy or they have um crazy phrases, they still often do know what they're talking about, and we can honor our parents by listening to their instruction. But this has been another episode of the Living with Grace and Sass podcast where real life meets best friend banter.
