Episode 3 - In this episode of The Adam and Dedra Show, we kick things off with a review of Zombie Whip from Beer Zombies, a strawberry banana ice cream fruit sour that pours thick, looks wild, and tastes even better than it sounds. Then we recap our latest adventure to Hopsology Taproom and Wine Bar in Glendale, Arizona, a spot that blends a modern taproom with a homebrew supply shop and creates a really unique experience for craft beer fans.

We talk about the beers we tried, including the unforgettable Orange Drumsticks Imperial Hazy, which was delicious but poured more like a smoothie than a beer, plus pours from Wren House, Tombstone, and Drekker. We also share what stood out most about Hopsology, from the atmosphere and layout to the friendly service and the cool concept behind the business.

After beer, we made our way to Leo’s Hawaiian BBQ, where the food completely lived up to the hype. From teriyaki chicken and katsu to creamy macaroni salad and a surprisingly great chicken sandwich that Adam didn't get or hear about, it was the perfect ending to a really fun day out.

Adam

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Adam and Dedra show. Cheers. Cheers. Oh man, I'm jumping right out. You got me.

Dedra

Well, this is a uh fruited sour. So you're already jumping at it. Yeah, I love fruited sours, so I was really super excited to have this one. So cheers.

Adam

Yeah, this is from uh Beer Zombies, which is in Las Vegas, Nevada. It's called Zombie Whip. Whip. Oh. Fruited sourel strawberry banana ice cream. And uh the way that it poured, how thick that is, and it almost looks creamy. Oh my gosh. Um yeah.

Dedra

If you are the lactose intolerant, you might want to pop a couple milk pills. And I did, but look, look at that. It it's it's pink, it's creamy, it definitely looks like a smoothie, like a strawberry banana smoothie. It's it's amazing.

Adam

It's a pencil eraser.

Dedra

Um, and it's actually pretty low. It is the color of a pencil eraser, but it's actually really low in alcohol. But I think a lot of the sours typically are, right? Uh 4.3.

Adam

Yeah, I think that's probably because of all the ice cream they probably put inside of there.

Dedra

It is so good. I feel like I almost actually just drooled saying 4.3.

Adam

Looks like pencil eraser, but does not taste like it. That is a really good sour.

Dedra

It is, it is. You definitely taste the strawberry banana or the strawberry. I taste a lot of the strawberry.

Adam

You taste a lot of the strawberry and the cream also inside of there.

Dedra

Yes.

Adam

Beer Zombie's got some good beers. I mean, we've had um quite a few from there, and I don't think I've had a bad one yet. The brewery was pretty neat when we went out there. That was what, a couple years ago?

Dedra

Mm-hmm.

Adam

Yeah, it was a really neat place. But they do not disappoint on their beer, that's for sure. They it it tastes amazing. Um, this is no exception, it's really good. Very good. Yeah, but we went to some fun places this weekend.

Dedra

Oh, one more thing. And the plus, look at their logo. Their logo is super cool. I don't know if you can see it all that well, but if you're familiar with beer zombies, it's pretty cool. Super cool logo, and their labels and all of their merchandise is always really cool.

Adam

Yeah, okay. Well, this weekend we went to Hopsology, which is uh a uh tap house and wine bar, and a very unique story to this place. Uh, first of all, I mean it is a tap room, so a lot of uh great great beers on tap. Um Arizona focused. It was in uh Glendale, Arizona is where it's at. And uh first thing I poured was it was pretty unique, that Orange Drumsticks by uh Humble Forager Brewery, and uh that's out of uh Euclare, uh Wisconsin. And it was it would the way that it poured, so uh the guys that uh were putting it on had a can, they said the day before. And uh they said that it poured like pretty well, but their uh keg that they got, they just tapped it, it was pouring like super thick, so it was like sludge at the bottom of the uh the keg. They said that they were in there trying to shake it up and and uh mix it just so that it kind of poured a little bit better. But I got that sucker and it was like thicker than orange juice.

Dedra

That that was intense.

Adam

Um the taste was right on though. I I I really liked the taste, but uh after about halfway through my throat started to burn a little bit, um, just from the thickness and and and uh um I don't know, the sweetness of it, I guess, because it was a an Imperial IPA, uh Imperial um hazy, obviously, with it that thick. And it was kind of like drinking an orange jewelry. So that's kind of like the best way I can describe it. My mouth's watering too. It's good stuff.

Dedra

We're very passionate about what we do and say. Oh, yeah. What did you do? Especially when it comes to beers. Um, I got the Ringtail IPA actually, it's a New England hazy, and it's actually from Rent House. I gotta say, Rent House here in Phoenix. At first, I really wasn't a big fan of Rent House. I felt like a lot of what they or what I was having just really wasn't up to my palate. So I don't know if my palate has matured, but I've noticed lately I do I am starting to like a lot more and more of Rent House. Um, and it was good. It was, of course, got got the hazy, but it was just it was a good starting point. It was a very good starting point.

Adam

Do you remember we had that one? We actually drank it here on the show a few weeks ago.

Dedra

Makes sense why I got it again and why I enjoyed it so well. Well, if you like it, consistency is key, and I think I'm starting to consistently like Red House a little more. All right.

Adam

Well, that was good stuff. I like that too. I had a taste of it, of course. And you tasted mine, but it was just too much, wasn't it?

Dedra

It was, it was, but you did mix that, you did cut it with something else. What was the other stuff there, the other glass that you got poured?

Adam

Uh, I ended up getting a tombstone hazy. And honestly, going back and forth between those kind of mellowed out that thickness that orange drumsticks was. It's kind of like having a sip of that, a few drinks of that, drink of water, and then I'd go back to that one, have a couple sips. I'll be honest, that one cup of orange drumsticks, I think I had that uh that tombstone IPA and a glass of water, and I'd finished both of those before I could finish that orange drumsticks.

Dedra

It was it was a bit much. I'm I'm hoping that they got it all taken care of and figured out, like give spoons out. Yeah, or it's one of those smoothie straws.

Adam

Yeah.

Dedra

But it was it was pretty thick, so I'm hoping they got everything figured out with that.

Adam

Yeah, which they kind of knew because remember uh they offered us like a five-ounce pour for that one because they were like, uh, you don't have to drink it all. We know what what this is pouring like. So that was I thought really nice of the the the guys there behind the counter uh for them to do that for us.

Dedra

Right.

Adam

Um, no, it was I appreciated it. I still finished that like a champ, but uh I think that it'll be actually pour really well. So they're probably at the bottom of the keg, there's probably some uh settling. And I think once they get through that part, it's gonna be a really good, really good beard um to have on tap.

Dedra

I agree. So speak a little bit more about this specific location because this wasn't their original location, they had a different one.

Adam

Correct. So it had a actually a really cool place. So I um I did homebrew for for many years. Um, you know, just like anybody who homebrews who doesn't turn into a business, life gets in the way, you just don't have as much time to do it. I still have all my equipment, but this place, the way it started out, and the way that I've gone to it, and this was probably close to 15 years ago, is they started out as a homebrew shop. And uh they it had the original owner had it for many, many years. And uh, you know, he would I I'd go in there, I'd I'd see the same guy every single time that I'd walk in. I think his name was Chuck, and he would be in there, I'd get my stuff, go home, start brewing. And uh this and they moved, I think they had like a rent of the place that they were renting, they had issues with, ended up having to move locations, still followed them over there. But uh during that spot, I think COVID hit, and uh the guy ended up retiring. He was he was a little bit older. And once he retired, uh the new owners um brought in a little bit more uh newer ideas, I think.

Dedra

Different a little bit of a different perspective.

Adam

So his dream was to marry that idea of the the home brew shop with a tap room and possibly like a homebrew society that they're able to do it there, and uh they're they're definitely on their way to do that. I I don't know exactly how far they succeeded on that. We didn't get to talk to the owner while we were there, but uh it was it was a new unique experience. They had the home brew shop was still there inside the same location, but it was in the back, so they still sold the grains, the hops, all that stuff, um, equipment. So it was almost like a little mini store in the back of the place. The front section was the tap room, and uh just to have both uh there at the same time, I thought it was a great experience. You can get some craft beer, then go in in the bag, buy some stuff to go make your own craft beer, and I think it's a great concept.

Dedra

Right. And walking in, like I this was our first time there, and I just really didn't know what to expect. Oh my god. Well, I know this is gonna last the whole episode. I got some distance on that one. Did you see that? No. Okay. But you really don't know what to expect going in because it's dark and you can't really see much on the inside. But once you open the door, it actually goes back pretty deep. It's kind of narrow, um, but it goes back really far. So, like that very front part, when you first walk in tucked in the corner, or two or three coolers where you can grab your cans and stuff like that to go. Yeah. Um, and then off to the left side, they have a bunch of like uh couches, like a seating area, and then you go a little bit more towards, I guess, closer towards the center of the place. And that's where the bar in itself is, and they have like a neat um Z-shaped or zigzag. I don't know what how to Yeah, it's kind of like a Z-shaped bar, and I like the shape of that. And they had some high top spread out, um, and they had their little area for merchandise. And I actually I really like that place, and I wish it was a lot closer. So they're um even though it's in Glendale, yeah, even though they're in Glendale, it's like for was it 43rd, 51st? 51st and Bell. 51st and Bell. Yeah. So for us that's quite a bit of a drive, but it was, you know, we'll we'll drive for beer.

Adam

Um we've said it once, we've said it before.

Dedra

And it was actually it was really good. We we showed up the place, you know, didn't have a ton of people, which was good because then we're able to talk to the other people that were there at the bar and the gentleman that was serving us. Um, and I don't I don't recall his name, but he was very very helpful, super helpful, very nice. Yeah. Um just had a really great experience overall. But behind the bar, you can go back further, and that's where they do all their brewing, and that's at the very, very back is where the bathrooms are, which is really neat because then you get to pass through and see all the equipment and everything there on your way to the bathroom. So it's almost kind of like um almost like a museum, I guess.

Adam

Yeah, with all the stuff on the wall and stuff you can see.

Dedra

Yeah, it's it's a really neat place.

Adam

Yeah, and one thing that they do there is they uh host events. So they actually do like uh like a brewing school um on occasion, and uh there's dates and stuff like that. They do all that, but they do actually home brewing and they teach it uh there also, which I think is a really neat concept because I mean, just bringing more people into the craft beer space, I think the more the better. You know, that we're just gonna get we're gonna get all the good people. That's that's that's the way we do it.

Dedra

Right. The other thing that I've noticed there is once we sat down, got our first beer, just to see the entire collection and the way that the whole place is just laid out behind the bar. It's it's very it has a very modern, clean appearance to it. Um I really liked it. I like the place. So after we had our first pour, we were getting down to the end of it. So we're starting to look around, look at their tap list, and then um Adam went and checked out the the refrigerators for the other beers, and he was just he came back and he was like, There's Drecker over there.

Adam

There's a whole Drecker fridge, is what they have over there. That was a whole freaking thing.

Dedra

Oh, I was in heaven, so I was like, okay, I guess I'm gonna get my beer. I'm gonna go get the next one poured and picked out or picked out and ready to pour. And the next one I ended up choosing was one from Drecker, which is from you know, Fargo, North Dakota. But it was the raspberry swirly, it's a creamsicle sour, kind of like this, but it's it's a ras, it's raspberry, and oh, it is so good.

Adam

It was like a deep red color. It was real thick. I mean, a smoothie type style uh uh sour. And it, yeah, that was thick.

Dedra

Yes, definitely. It's probably about two and a half, close to three C's thick. It was it was good. It was really good. Yes, and anything, anything by Drecker and out of order, I am such a huge fan of. I love those smoothie sours.

Adam

And how about this one? Those beer zombies, I think holds up to both of them.

Dedra

For sure, it does. I'll all I I'll say with this one is that it doesn't quite have that sour, uh, little tiny punch to it like like Drecker does. Well, well, no, it it doesn't have that sour little punch to it, like the like the one from Drecker does or the one from out of order.

Adam

I get that tartness to that, and that's what's making me drool, I think.

Dedra

Maybe maybe I'm missing it. I don't know.

Adam

Yeah. Well, two of the beers that they had on tap, um, they ended they was from the from a a brewer, I guess. I don't know if they just took their recipe and brew it that brewed it there. It was a home brewer that had their recipe that they actually served there at the tasting room. And I didn't know that um it was there actually. They ended up telling us after I had those two beers, and I wasn't trying to have too many. So I was decided for a five-ounce of it, and it was another IPA, just American-style IPA, and uh really good. It actually almost reminded me of the beers that I made. And I I'm not saying that just to say that my the beer that I made was great, but um I I enjoyed it a lot, and actually that one reminded me uh of a couple of the ones that I've I've made before, of course. You know, I'm making IPAs. I mean a lot of different styles, but IPAs I was I always always made sure I had that on tap. And it kind of reminded me of that. See, I'm still my I'm still like my mouth's still watering, just thinking of it. But he poured when I was getting that tombstone one, it uh he ended up pouring the wrong one, or he started pouring the wrong one. You ended up taking that beer. It was uh Blondale, was it?

Dedra

Yes.

Adam

You remember what it was?

Dedra

No, because I didn't order it. I think it was it was poured on accident, so and it was free.

Adam

The Lesser Unconformity is what it was out of uh Wanderlust Brewing Company. Uh, and that's in uh Flagstaff, Arizona. And uh, I'm not one for cream eals typically. Um, there's been some really good ones. I've uh I've I've had some good ones that I've actually really enjoyed. It's just not my go-to. This one I thought was pretty good. You ended up drinking that cup. It was about only like a half pour of it. He's just like, here, I poured this an accident, you guys can have it. And what I think that's always good. I mean, I hate seeing the guy behind the counter just dump it.

Dedra

Right, right. I mean, if if somebody on the other side is saying, Hey, I'll love that beer, I'll love that accident, give it a give it to them instead of you know having to dump it out. Like that hurts our heart. Yeah, just because you poured it on accident doesn't mean you have to go in the trash. No, no, no. Or down the drain. Jesus. Make people happy. Right. Right.

Adam

You might throw an extra couple points there on the on on the uh what do you call it? The tip.

Dedra

Right. So don't be a dick and throw a a beer that was poured on accident. Could have cost yourself an extra dollar or two.

Adam

Yep. So we spent a lot of money there. You ended up getting a hat.

Dedra

Oh, yeah. Oh, yes.

Adam

And then we ended up getting a four-pack of cans. We got uh and a bottle. I got a bottle, yeah, of some uh bourbon barrel age something or another from Prairie. It looks amazing. I think it was called like I don't know, something like chai mocha something or another, and I can't wait to drink it. I wish I had more information. I don't.

Dedra

So I love being able to have a good selection of merchandise. And I've slowed back on the shirts just because I have a lot of clothes, but hats. Hats are easier to purchase and store because they don't take a ton of space. Um, so if I find a hat that's a really good hat, um, quality. This one actually has a a leather patch for their logo. So I got an all-black hat with a tan leather patch of the hopsology logo, and I wish I had it right near me, but didn't plan that out very well. You'll wear it on another episode. Right, right. I'll wear it on the next one. Yeah, um, but I I really love just getting the merchandise and stickers. Stickers are always a fun thing, you know. Magnets, even I'm like an magnet now. Anyways, that's neither here nor there. Um, so yeah. Hopsology, go check them out in London.

Adam

But what where we went somewhere afterwards. Oh, one of your favorite places.

Dedra

Oh, yes. So if you go a little more further west from hopsology, is one of my favorite, absolute favorite Hawaiian barbecue places called Leo's. And I think what really like made what grabbed me is their chicken teriyaki was oh, that was the first thing I've ever had was our chicken teriyaki, and it was amazing, and I've been hooked ever since. And uh I don't know, I don't know if the owner's name is Leo, but there's a guy that works there named Leo. What a coincidence. I just heard myself walking through that out loud, and I was like, this does not sound good for me. And I can't even say it was the beer because it's only 4.3. Yeah.

Adam

Um, so I'm gonna say that uh Hawaiian barbecues, almost everywhere you go, they have almost the same menu. I mean, you're gonna get teriyaki chicken, you're gonna get katsu chicken, you're gonna get barbecue beef, barbecue chicken, all those things.

Dedra

And uh macaroni salad. Oh my god. I don't think there's ever been Hawaiian barbecue macaroni salad specifically, that I've been like, oh, this is disgusting. Yeah. So I gotta figure out how to make it.

Adam

Um they did something different with theirs though, because they put the tuna in there, and that we're thinking it's tuna. It had a little bit of that that flavor of uh of uh fish and and the sea a little bit, and tuna, yes. Just like that. It was weird. Um, but it was very creamy. I mean, we ate a ton of it. I think we got like the family meal, and it was pretty much just me and you eating it. Oh, I'm like in the car on the drive back trying to like eat pieces.

Dedra

I was so jealous because I was driving. I was fighting you. I was getting it. Hey, I was getting to that. I was gonna give you credit.

Adam

Okay, I'll let you by all means.

Dedra

So as I drove and I watched him out of envy eating every hot bite while I got the room temperature chicken that's gonna give stomach issues. Like no. No, uh, he gave me bites in between the lights and at or at red lights, I mean. Or not.

Adam

Um I had that macaroni salad given it to you.

Dedra

Oh, that is so good.

Adam

Chicken katsu, that was good with this katsu sauce.

Dedra

So one thing that I really do like there that they have, it's like a chicken, I don't know if it's like a chicken sandwich or a chicken burger. But what I really cause like their chicken there is just so tender. It's just it's so moist and it comes apart. Like there's a tiny bit of chew, so it's not like shredding and falling apart, but oh, it is so good. But what I love is that they add in um cucumber, like big slices of cucumber, and that gives it that crunch. So instead of getting like a pickle, um, they put just a regular cucumber in there, and I love cucumber, and it just that was for me, that was the perfect combination. Oh I got a question for you.

Adam

You've been going there for a while, right?

Dedra

Yeah.

Adam

Why didn't I know about the sandwich?

Dedra

Because you only order like the same three things that you just talked about. Karayaki, katsu, and barbecue chicken. I want the sandwich now. Because that's all you order.

Adam

All right. I'm bummed out. I want a chicken sandwich.

Dedra

Well, you know what? We'll go back maybe this weekend because Hopsology is having their uh one year anniversary and it's just right down the street.

Adam

So we go to the same two places that we did this for you?

Dedra

Yeah. I mean, I always say I loved both places. I would go back to oh my gosh. You're still drooling? Yeah. It's like beer and food. It was actually a really good one. That was a great weekend, wasn't it? Really good Saturday.

Adam

We had 20 beers. Actually, this one right here is one that we actually picked up there, the beer zombies. Um you ended up getting a drecker, which I've never even heard of it, so we'll have to we'll have to have that um on here pretty soon. And let's see if it can make it another week. I I hope we can.

Dedra

Well, I mean, it's it's only a few days away until we're there. Maybe we can find another one and this time we'll buy two cans.

Adam

That was actually a really good weekend. The food was amazing. I think after we had all that, we we ended up sitting down and just like falling asleep because it was just like had all that. We had good beer, good food, we're full. And I was just like, All right, we're done.

Dedra

Like, there is nothing better than taking a nap when you've got a belly full of really good food.

Adam

So a nap asleep. I think we woke up in the morning.

Dedra

But if you if you're ever in Glendale on that side of town, um, in Arrowhead, uh I believe it's uh Leo's is 79th Avenue in Bell. So if you're ever in that area, definitely go check out Leo's.

Adam

Oh yeah, that was good.

Dedra

I mean, if there's I mean, I like that area, the Arrowhead area in general.

Adam

Except for the traffic.

Dedra

Yes, t traffic's always been terrible there. Um, but it's just I don't know. You you get the same bar restaurants, same bar food. Um, so definitely just have a couple drinks and then go to Leo's afterwards. And it is so, so good. They don't serve beer, so that's something. Yeah. Go somewhere, get a drink or two, and then go to Leo's and have yourself that chicken sandwich Adam hasn't had. Um, definitely get the chicken teriyaki, um, the barbecue beef. Just really anything, anything there, get it. You're not gonna be disappointed. And if you are, let me know, so I don't get it. But I'm gonna call you a liar anyways.

Adam

I've had it and it was good.

Dedra

Right.

Adam

No, that was that was a lot of fun though. And I'm actually really enjoying this. I was really trying to save this until the end of this episode just because I was like, oh my gosh, I'm like, I'm trying not to take too many drinks of it because it is really good.

Dedra

It is, it is very delicious. Well, I think we're gonna end our show on this. Um, we'll cheers, slam our beers, and tell everyone until next time, yeah?

Adam

That's right. Cheers, everybody.

Dedra

Until next time.

Adam

Appreciate you guys joining us as usual. Um, thank you for watching. And you know, let us know in the comments if there's somewhere else that you'd like us to try. Um, we love going places. Of course, we're gonna uh definitely take uh some advice if we can get it. And uh thank you for watching, and until the next time, cheers. Cheers.
