Welcome to Inside a Perfect Paint Job. I'm Jeff Adkins, your host. I want to uh welcome a guest today. He's not here yet. I'm recording this ahead of time so that I get this out of the way um before he shows up. But either way, this guy is um ended up being a really good friend. Um he helps me a lot with a lot of different things in the painting industry. And um he's my Sherwin Williams rep. So I'd like to welcome Andrew Bain to our podcast studio today. How are you doing, Andrew?
SPEAKER_00I'm doing well. How are you this Wednesday, Jeff?
SPEAKER_01I'm doing good. Um we want to talk about some exterior painting products, all the way from A100 up to the top of the line. Um rain refresh and all. Um that way these people can understand. A lot of times people just buy because of habit, I think. And sometimes you're in the habit of buying the cheapest thing. And the cheapest thing's not always the best thing. And in my opinion, when you're painting the exterior of your home, you want to use the best you can because labor is just so expensive. And if I'm putting paint on, I personally want to put the best that I physically can. But let's talk about coatings. Um let's talk about exterior coatings and everything thereof, I guess. Um, why should I use a better paint? Let's go with that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um, so use reason to use a better paint with your home, uh, you know, on the exterior, you know, I mean, obviously you're having a l a lot less square footage on the exterior of your home. Um but you know, it's still gonna be a big investment. Uh, you know, with this time of the year. Uh, you know, we're dealing with, you know, hotter temperatures, uh, a lot of moisture.
SPEAKER_01And I'll tell you something bad about this area is we only have four or five months to do all of these exteriors. Um and that's always been a problem for us personally, because I think our first estimate got accepted uh the last week of December. Uh-huh. So that's been a long time ago.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Yeah, that that's the thing. Uh, you know, I mean, there's always, you know, a need, a demand for it. Um, because again, with the exterior home, you know, it's you know something that you know everyone's gonna see the first impression of your home. Uh but yeah, you are right, we do have a short window here in West Virginia, um, because I mean there's times I mean we could still even get snow in May.
SPEAKER_01And I've actually myself um we've painted um up till the first of December a couple of years ago because it was fifty degrees all the way through. Last year we didn't get to paint outside past November the first. Yes. It got cold on us early this year, and we it just wasn't possible to do.
SPEAKER_00Right. Um, so we do have paints that do allow for the colder temperatures. Uh, you know, we have one called latitude uh that goes in extreme temperature range, so it could go up down to 35 degrees surface temperature. Um so that is one option. Uh and it can be painted uh within 30 minutes of rain in the forecast. Um so that is one, you know, with the extreme uh weather, you know, hot or cold and you know, rain, because I mean we could pop up, you know, rainstorms here, you know, all the time. Uh that's one, especially. Um that's that's a that's a newer product from Sure Williams, but um there's a lot of lot of positive feedback, a lot of need for that in our area.
SPEAKER_01Let's talk about the rain refresh. Um, I use a lot of it, and um let's just explain that to them, I guess.
SPEAKER_00Sure. Um, so with the emerald rain refresh, you know, it's part of the emerald line where it's the top of our exterior, um, so you're getting the most moisture resistance, mold and mildew resistance. What's that warranty? Uh it has a lifetime warranty. If it is if it is properly appro applied, uh and all, you know, the specs, surface prep is followed, it has a lifetime warranty.
SPEAKER_01And the one under that is 20 years?
SPEAKER_00Uh no, duration, uh the one under that it it has a lifetime warranty as well.
SPEAKER_01So which one's 20? Or am I?
SPEAKER_00Uh so when you get down to Super Paint, Super Paint has a 30. Okay. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. So uh, you know, as you go down, um, you know, as far as far as that goes, the the warranty, you know, as long as you know the surface is properly prepped, is properly appro applied, uh, as it says on the data pages, you know, it has that warranty with it. Um, but with the rain refresh, um, that technology, um, so like the name says rain refresh. Um so with the rainwater, um, because I mean here in West Virginia, we get you know extreme weather, you know, big rainstorms uh that might kick up dirt and contaminants in someone's home, uh, or you know, a big windstorm. You know, we've been under some tornado watches, you know, the past few years, hard to believe. Uh, but you're gonna get debris and contaminants on your home. Um, so with that name, the rain refresh. Um so it has that technology with the rain, and you use a garden hose or a spray pump, uh, but it's gonna collect the dirt and other contaminants, uh, and it's gonna take away the surface from the surface of your home. Uh that way it's constantly, you know, looking clean and maintained. And, you know, if it was something that you painted the previous year, uh it's still gonna look good like it was just painted. So less less overall maintenance on your home. Uh that way, you know, it makes you know you the overall investment of the exterior home, which it's it's important to protect the exterior of your home because it lead to other things, but um it makes you know that investment uh more worthwhile.
SPEAKER_01The most important thing about painting the exterior of your home is the protection. Yes. Um, me personally, um the colors really doesn't matter if the home's not protected.
SPEAKER_00Yes. Uh because you know, if the improper paint is used, uh you can lead to things where you're trapping moisture, um, you know, like in a brick or masonry surface. And it actually can compromise, you know, that brick or masonry. And you know, you're not just as well as the paint. As well as the paint. So you're not only just having a cosmetic problem, you're having a problem with the structure of a home that, you know, is going to get more expensive uh and more complicated.
SPEAKER_01Seeing how you mentioned brick, um, we paint a lot of brick homes, both painted and not painted yet. Um let's talk about loxon.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um, so lox on uh is definitely the standard in my opinion. Uh it's the baseline for painting a brick or masonry surface. Um so, like you said, some homes uh I've already been painted, some haven't been painted. Uh it's definitely a trend, you know, painting brick homes. Um some people really like that. Other people, you know, don't. They like to keep the the natural look of the you know the original brick. Uh but loxon, so it is uh designed to fill in the pores because you know brick and masonry is is a very porous surface. So it's gonna fill in the pores and make it more uniform, but it's still gonna allow the brick and masonry uh to breathe. Um but with that lox on self-cleaning technology, so you're like the Emerald Rain Refresh. Um so you're getting that technology where it's gonna be less overall maintenance on your home. Uh with the rainwater garden hose, like I said, uh it's gonna be able to uh collect the dirt and other contaminants and keep the exterior home, the surface looking nice and clean.
SPEAKER_01Well, let's talk about um what else do we have really good for the exterior off the top of my head?
SPEAKER_00Um, so we have some products. Uh, you know, some people have, you know, wood cedar siding on their homes. Um some people have, you know, a log home. Not not very often here, but you know, in this area. Um, you know, definitely in a state park kind of area like Snowshoe or Canaan or somewhere wood. Uh but we do have some log homes in this area. Um we do have stains. Some stains that I'm really, you know, excited about and are really great products to protect your home and give you that natural look of you know, we're able to see the wood grain.
SPEAKER_01We normally do a couple cabins a year, and I don't really have one on the books yet. Um it's kind of odd, but um I'm not complaining at all. Um and I do um we painted our fence at the house this year, stained it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um it was about six or eight years old, I'm not exactly sure. And it never had anything but Thompson's put on it. Sure. And um the missus has been on me to do something for a couple of years. Okay. And it's done.
SPEAKER_00One of those honey to do lists, right? Yes. Okay. Um, but yeah, you know, there um, you know, as far as you know, walking surfaces and vertical surfaces, uh, there's exterior stains to use. Uh but the biggest thing about stain, um, you know, some people, you know, just want that overall look quickly. But, you know, as you know, and you know, just in the industry, um, you know, a lot of people build new decks, new fencing, and they want it stained right away, but you know, that's not not the case. They need to let that wood season. And what I mean by season, they need to allow it to do its natural process with the sun and you know, hotter temperatures, and they need to let that moisture escape out of there because we can't stain or paint a surface unless it's at a sort certain moisture level. Um, if we go too early, then we're going to create some problems.
SPEAKER_01And you just reminded me of something. Um we have moisture meters that we check with, um, number one. And number two, how hot is too hot when I'm painting the surface?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um, so there's definitely too hot. Um, so when you're getting up of that, like, you know, air temperature of like 90, 95 degrees, you know, that surface temperature is, you know, it's gonna be 110, 120 plus. Uh that at that point, it's it's it's it's too hot to paint. I mean, we do have doors.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Uh last week. And um uh it was kind of funny because um we was working early to get out of the sun. Uh-huh. And at one o'clock one day he went to put primer on a door and I said, You can't do that. And he thought I was teasing. Yeah. And I thought I had blisters on my hand when I touched the door. Oh yeah. Never in my life have I touched something that hot, a wood surface that hot. And um, so we had to paint that door in the evening because all morning long it's in direct sunlight.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Yeah, I mean just just think of, you know, if your hand is touching that surface and you know you get that ouch, you know, I put my hand on the stove, it's too hot. I mean, just just just think of how the paint, you know, I mean, it's is not naturally designed to go on that hot of a surface. So it's uh Why why not?
SPEAKER_01What why isn't it? Um is it because of curing?
SPEAKER_00Um so with that, I mean, you know, I mean, you know, it's you know, everything, you know, paint as far as you know uh chemistry, you know, on a molecular level. Um so you know, obviously, you know, once it's on there and once it's cured, you know, if it's the front door of your house or shutters, you know, I mean, obviously it's gonna hold up to hotter temperatures, but when you're trying to get it to bond to that surface, you know, it's it's gonna do that chemical molec molecular bond, you know, you don't you don't want that surface, you know, to you know, be hot and flash because it is is is it's gonna you know flash off there at that point.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and it will not cure properly. No, it it it will not just like the cold temperatures, the dew point, the hot sun, all factors in exterior painting that if aren't looked at, and that's one of the things I have people get mad at me because I won't start early enough for them um when we're painting exterior. And I tell people that April showers bring May flowers, and until April showers are over, we can't paint outside.
SPEAKER_00Yes. Um like like we've said, you know, there's lines that paint within 30 minutes of rain the latitude, uh, you know, extreme temperatures 35 to 110 degrees. Um but even then, I mean, if you're able to get only get, you know, an hour in here, hour in there, I mean, you know, you'd be more productive, you know, just being inside at that point because And that's what we do. Yeah, because you're you're gonna make your jobs take longer, you're gonna be able to do less jobs overall. And uh, you know, everyone, you know, that's in the business, you know, the painting business, you know, they want to get more jobs done. I mean, you know, there's there's a lot of demand out there, and you know, you want to give your customer the best, you know, overall look, product, service, but you know, you want to move on to the next job, you don't want to be stuck on a job, you know, two, three weeks.
SPEAKER_01So Yeah, we have to uh it's the unfortunate thing that we have to hurry. Yeah. I I tell my customers I don't hurry my painters.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_01And um that's kind of twofold. I do stay on them that we have to get done, but never will you hear me, let's hurry up, because when you hurry, things get missed, things don't happen, and things don't get cleaned up.
SPEAKER_00Sure, corners get cut, you know, the quality goes down. Um but with the exterior, you know, you're not starting until the middle of May, you know, when you know the weather gets more consistent, you know, I mean you don't want to, you know, have something take longer that you could prevent it, you know, by by you know, just doing interior jobs or something, you know, where it's it's constant temperatures, constant environment, um, you know, because we we want to try to do you know the most jobs and you know provide the best job and the best service possible. You know, that that that that's what you'd want to do.
SPEAKER_01All right. Is there anything else you want to talk about? Uh no, I mean, you know anything you think we need to touch on that we haven't for this?
SPEAKER_00No, just you know, with every surface, you know, there's multiple services on the exterior, um, you know, decks, you know, wood siding, uh brick masonry, stucco ethos, um, you know, stucco ethos, you know, there's a lot of uh demand for that. You know, a lot of people have that and a lot of people repair it. Um so you know, A100 is an old line that a lot of our stucco ethos guys use. But um, you know, as I like to say, um no matter what the surface is, you know, whether it's you know a vertical or horizontal surface or even like a roof, you know, there there's coatings for it. I mean you might not think so. Uh might not think Sharon Williams has it, but there's there's a coating pretty much for anything, any kind of surface.
