SPEAKER_02

This is James Collier with the Minneapolis Star Tribune. In our continued investigation into the tragic events surrounding the Adler family, we turn to those who lived closest to them. Their neighbors, who may have seen or heard more than they even realized. Today I'm speaking with Frank and Linda Myers, who lived next door to the Adlers for over a decade.

SPEAKER_01

Mark was a good man, a family man. Those last few days, he he wasn't himself. You could see it in the way he carried himself. Jumpy, looking over his shoulder. Not to be dramatic, but it was like he was being hunted.

SPEAKER_02

Did he ever mention what was bothering him?

SPEAKER_00

Not at first. But we heard things. Strange noises at the night. Not just from their house, but from the yard. Like something moving under the soil. And then the screaming.

SPEAKER_02

Screaming? From inside the house?

SPEAKER_00

Well, argument is all.

SPEAKER_02

Arguments.

SPEAKER_00

You know, marital spats. You know, these young couples today, these millennials, they don't understand what makes a marriage work. And that's the key word, isn't it? Work. It takes hard work. It takes listening and time.

SPEAKER_01

They weren't arguing. Wasn't marital spats. It was screaming.

SPEAKER_02

Okay. I'll ask again. Was the screaming coming from inside the house?

SPEAKER_01

No, from outside. We thought it was an animal at first, but then we heard his voice. Yelling for someone or something to leave his family alone. It was chilling.

SPEAKER_00

Worst sound I've ever heard.

SPEAKER_02

Did you ever see anything unusual?

SPEAKER_00

One night, I looked out the window and I saw um footprints.

SPEAKER_01

Footprints? Huge, muddy footprints leading from their house, but they weren't coming from the front door. They were coming from the ground. And they didn't look.

SPEAKER_00

Frank.

SPEAKER_02

Mr. Myers, they didn't look what?

SPEAKER_00

Mr. Coyer, we couldn't tell what they looked like.

SPEAKER_01

They didn't look human, Mr. Coyer. Did you call the police? We tried, but by the time they came, the footprints were gone, just disappeared.

SPEAKER_02

Like they were never there. Frank and Linda Myers weren't the only ones who saw and heard strange things leading up to the fire. Others in town whispered about shadows that moved on their own, an unnatural presence lurking just beyond sight. Next, we turn to the fire chief, the last man to enter the Adler home before it was reduced to ashes.
