This is James Collier with the Minneapolis Star Tribune. So far, we've heard from those who witnessed the eerie unraveling of Mark Adler's final days. But what about the night of the fire itself? What really happened inside that house? Today I'm speaking with Fire Chief Daniel Harrow, who led the team that responded to the Adler House fire.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I've been uh I've been at this for a little over 30 years. You know, seeing more fires than I can count. Some are tragic, you know. Um a lot of accidents. Especially in the winter when uh when it gets cold, people try uh silly ways of heating the house. But uh but that house, what happened that night? I still cannot explain it.
SPEAKER_00How do you mean?
SPEAKER_01Well, the call came in a little past midnight. Uh the neighbors, they'd heard some screaming and uh seen some fire. You know, we we got the call, we got out of there, got there as fast as we could. Uh, you know, we got there, EMS showed up, and then locals right behind them. But uh by the time we got there and we got hooked up, the uh the whole house was basically taken over. You know, like a like a just an inferno. And the heat was well, you know, it was wrong. I've I've never felt anything like it. And all the times I've been in a big kind of a structure fire like that, it was off. Uh the heat. It wasn't just flames, it was like uh like it was coming at you, like it was alive.
SPEAKER_00Alive? Can you elaborate?
SPEAKER_01Well, the way it moved, um it wasn't spreading like a normal blaze. It was like uh like going like it had somewhere to be, uh crawling, like it had uh intention. And that the smoke coming out wasn't just black like you would expect. It was black and like red and orange and there was uh well it was like a pulsing to it. Kind of like uh veins on a beaten heart. Just wasn't natural.
SPEAKER_00Did you see Mark Adler or or his family?
SPEAKER_01Well, I tell you, we we didn't find anyone. There was uh, you know, there was so many folks, all all the neighbors gathered around outside. Everyone was going pretty uh pretty hysterical, like you might, you know, like you might guess. Um lots of folks standing around in shock. But then uh Mark. You know, it sounds crazy, but uh we thought we heard him, you know, even with that fire raging. We thought uh we heard some screaming inside that he might still be in there. In pain or well, you know I I didn't know Mark too well, but I I thought for sure I could hear him in there screaming that uh screaming that he wouldn't let it take the That he would finish it. I tried to go in after him.
SPEAKER_00But what?
SPEAKER_01I made it through a breach in the front door. And uh so you know I uh I made it through and I uh I saw uh listen, I'm seeing a lot. Um but it in there through the flames I could have swore I saw him. I saw him, I saw him work. And you know, he wasn't alone. It was like there was another guy in there with him, but it wasn't like uh, you know, it wasn't a guy on fire. It was like there was a fire that was a guy pulling at him. Like the flames was a person themselves. I swear to God. I will never forget that moment. It wasn't human. And then I uh I heard the cracks and the bangs that I knew the house was coming down and I got out. The house came down right after I stepped out the front door. He never made it out. We uh You know, we did our jobs, we got the fire out and went in looking for remains. Hours and hours looking through there. Went right back to the spot that I knew I saw. There was nothing.
unknownNothing.
SPEAKER_00Fire Chief Daniel Harrow's words echo the whispers I've heard throughout this investigation. Something unnatural took root in the Adler home, something that couldn't be stopped by man, fire, or reason. But was it madness? Or was it something much worse? In our next episode, we turn to the final piece of this terrifying puzzle the recovered recordings from Mark Adler's phone. His last words, his final thoughts captured in the moments before the end of the
