Hey everyone, and welcome back to the History Chat. I'm your host, Miss Loshi Molin. If you're new to the podcast, this show is for history lovers, but this particular series is designed to help with review and quick understanding of US history. This series is especially helpful if you're preparing for the APUS history exam, the US History Star Test, or really any US history exam focusing on U.S. history since 1877. In the last episode, we talked about the 1980s and the Reagan era, including Reaganomics, Cold War tensions, and the fall of the Berlin Wall. Today we're moving into the 1990s. This decade includes the presidency of George H. W. Bush, the end of the Cold War, the presidency of Bill Clinton, and several important political and economic changes. All right, let's get into it. George H. W. Bush became president in 1989. His presidency focused heavily on foreign policy, especially events connected to the end of the Cold War. One of the most important events of Bush's presidency was the Gulf War. The conflict began when Iraq invaded Kuwait. The United States organized a coalition of countries to respond. This coalition forced Iraq to withdraw from Kuwait. The operation was successful and Kuwait was liberated. During Bush's presidency, the United States also carried out military operations in several countries. These included Panama, Somalia, and Kuwait. Another major global event occurred in 1991, the Soviet Union collapsed. This marked the official end of the Cold War, which had lasted for decades. Bush also supported important domestic legislation. One of the most significant laws was the Americans with Disabilities Act, or ADA. This law guaranteed equal access to public facilities and employment for individuals with disabilities. In the 1992 presidential election, Bush faced a serious challenge. A third party candidate named Ross Perot ran for president. Perot received a significant number of votes. Many analysts believe that Perot took votes away from Bush, which helped Bill Clinton win the election. Bill Clinton became president in 1993. His presidency focused on both economic growth and political conflict. During Clinton's presidency, the United States experienced strong economic growth. For the first time in many years, the federal government ran a budget surplus. This was one of the few times in modern history that the United States had a surplus instead of a deficit. One of Clinton's major economic policies was NAFTA, the North American Free Trade Agreement. NAFTA removed trade barriers between the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The goal was to increase trade and economic cooperation between the three countries. Another major agreement was the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, often called GATT. This agreement helped increase global trade. It also helped lead to the creation of the World Trade Organization, or WTO. Clinton also attempted to reform health care. The administration proposed universal health care. This plan was led by First Lady Hillary Clinton. However, the proposal failed to pass Congress. Despite political conflicts, the federal government ran a budget surplus for the first time in decades. This reflected strong economic growth during the 1990s. During Clinton's presidency, the political landscape also changed. In 1994, conservatives like Newt Gingrich introduced the contract with America. This movement aimed to limit the influence of government and reduce welfare programs. Clint's presidency also involved international conflicts. When major crisis occurred in Bosnia, the United Nations and NATO intervened to stop ethnic cleansing. The conflict ended with the Dayton Accords, a peace agreement. This was considered one of Clinton's major foreign policy successes. One of the most dramatic events of the decade occurred in 1998. President Clinton was impeached by the House of Representatives. The impeachment was connected to a scandal involving Clinton's relationship with an intern. The impeachment caused widespread distrust, disillusionment, and cynicism about the government. However, Clinton was not removed from office because the Senate did not vote to convict him. Let's review the key ideas from the 1990s. George H.W. Bush led the United States during the Gulf War and the collapse of the Soviet Union, which marked the end of the Cold War. Domestically, Bush signed the Americans with Disability Act. Bill Clinton's presidency focused on economic growth, global trade agreements, and political conflict. Major policies included NAFTA and GATT, and the economy experienced a budget surplus. The decade also included political events like the Contract with America, the Bosnia conflict, and the Dayton Accords, and Clinton's impeachment.
