You know the feeling.

It happens to almost every non-native professional. And it's not a confidence problem. It's a preparation problem.

In this episode, Chloe and Alex give you the exact phrases you need for every single moment of a meeting — from the opening to the close. How to give your opinion without sounding hesitant. How to interrupt without sounding rude. How to disagree without causing offence. And how to wrap up like someone who owns the room.

🎯 Walk into your next meeting knowing exactly what to say — and when to say it.

Have you ever been in a business meeting? You know exactly what you want to say, your idea is brilliant, but your brain is just searching, searching for that perfect word, it gets stuck and the moment passes.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, absolutely. It's that frustrating feeling of having the right thought, but not the right words. Many people think fluency means knowing thousands of complex, fancy words. But the secret, especially in the professional world, isn't about knowing more words, it's about mastering the right words.

SPEAKER_00

Exactly, Alex. And that's what we're focusing on today. Thank you for tuning in to boost your business English. We are not going to give you a long vocabulary list. Instead, we're giving you the 10 verbs that do 80% of the heavy lifting in any business conversation. These are your new power tools.

SPEAKER_01

That's a great way to put it, Chloe. These are the verbs that get you from point A to point B clearly and professionally. And definitely stay with us until the end because we're saving the most powerful sentence of all for last. And trust me, once you hear it, you'll use it every single week.

SPEAKER_00

Alright, let's jump in. The first verb is one you'll use every single day. Discuss. In a business context, we don't just talk about things, we discuss them. It sounds more structured, more professional.

SPEAKER_01

That's a key distinction. For example, instead of saying let's talk about the new project, you'd say let's discuss the new project. It instantly raises the level of formality and focus.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, let's look at the next two as a pair because they are the yin and yang of business metrics. They are increase and reduce. Every business wants to increase something and reduce something else.

SPEAKER_01

Right. You want to increase profits, increase efficiency, increase market share, and you want to reduce cost, reduce waste, reduce customer complaints. They are simple, powerful, and universally understood in the business world.

SPEAKER_00

Our fourth verb builds on this idea. It's improve. It's all about making things better. It's a positive, action-oriented word. You can improve a process, improve a product, or improve your own skills.

SPEAKER_01

And our fifth verb for this first block is provide. It's a much stronger and more professional substitute for give. You don't just give information, you provide an update. You don't give help, you provide support.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, so we have discuss, increase, reduce, improve, and provide. Let's do a quick hear, repeat, and learn section so you can practice the pronunciation and get them into your active vocabulary. Alex, lead the way.

SPEAKER_01

You got it. Just repeat after me. Let's discuss the report. We need to increase sales. How can we reduce cost? We will improve the workflow. I can provide the data.

SPEAKER_00

Great. Now these words sound good in isolation, but let's see them in a real-world context. Alex, are you ready for a quick role play?

SPEAKER_01

Always. Let's do it. You be the manager, I'll be the team member. The setting is a project update meeting.

SPEAKER_00

Perfect. Hi, Alex. Thanks for joining. I wanted to discuss the Q3 social media campaign.

SPEAKER_01

Of course, Chloe. The initial data shows we need to improve our engagement on LinkedIn.

SPEAKER_00

I agree. What can we do to increase our reach without increasing the budget?

SPEAKER_01

Well, we could reduce our ad spend on other platforms and reallocate it here. I can provide the team with a new content schedule by Friday. Excellent.

SPEAKER_00

Let's do that. Okay, let's break that down. Did you hear them? All five verbs were in that short conversation.

SPEAKER_01

And notice how clear and efficient it was. I didn't say make our engagement better. I said improve our engagement. I didn't say give the team a new schedule. I said provide the team with a new schedule. It's direct, professional, and leaves no room for misunderstanding.

SPEAKER_00

SPEAKER_01

That's a great point, Alex, and it brings up something important. Common mistakes. For instance, with the verb discuss, a frequent error for learners is adding the word about after it. They might say, let's discuss about the project. But discuss doesn't need about. You just discuss the project.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, let's move on to our next set of five. These verbs are more about action, leadership, and getting things done. First up we have manage and lead.

SPEAKER_01

Ah, yes. Often used interchangeably, but they are different. To manage something is to control it, to organize it. You manage a team, you manage a budget, you manage a project. It's about systems and processes.

SPEAKER_00

Whereas to lead is about direction and vision, you lead a team towards a goal. You lead a new company initiative. It's about inspiring people and showing the way forward. You manage tasks, but you lead people.

SPEAKER_01

A subtle but very important distinction. Our eighth verb is develop. This is about creation and growth. You develop a new product, you develop a strategy, or you develop your skills. It implies building something over time.

SPEAKER_00

I like that one a lot. And number nine is a personal favorite of mine because it's all about results. The verb is deliver. It's so much more powerful than just do or finish. When you say I will deliver the report by Tuesday, you're making a promise. You're saying the results will be in someone's hands.

SPEAKER_01

Exactly. It's about accountability. And speaking of delivering, we deliver new lessons like this one every week. So make sure you're subscribed so you never miss out. SPEAKER_00

Alright, time for our second role play. This one is a bit more high-level. Imagine we're two department heads in a strategy meeting. That was a great overview. Let's practice these like we did with the first set. Time for another Hear, Repeat, and Learn session to really solidify these powerful verbs. Okay, I'm ready. You start.

SPEAKER_01

I will manage the project timeline. Role playing. Chloe, the board wants us to develop a new plan for international expansion.

SPEAKER_00

I can lead that initiative. I'll need to manage a cross-functional team to get it done effectively.

SPEAKER_01

Excellent.

SPEAKER_00

What do you need to deliver a proposal by the end of the month? We need to achieve clarity on the budget first. Once we have that, we can move forward with a solid plan.

SPEAKER_01

Sounds good. Okay. See the power in those verbs? Chloe didn't say, I will be in charge. She said, I can lead. It shows confidence and vision.

SPEAKER_00

Exactly. And I snuck in our final, most important verb there. Number 10. Achieve. This word is about success. It's not just do or get, it's about reaching a significant goal. And honestly, this is the turning point for so many learners. You stop trying to describe every little action and instead focus on the outcomes. You don't just do tasks, you achieve goals.

SPEAKER_01

That's the entire mental shift. Stop focusing on speaking perfect English and start focusing on communicating your ability to achieve results. That's the language of business.

SPEAKER_00

So let's recap all 10 power verbs. Discuss, improve, increase, reduce, provide, manage, lead, develop, deliver, and the ultimate one, achieve.

SPEAKER_01

And as we promised, we have a final, powerful sentence for you. This is a template you can adapt for almost any meeting, presentation, or report. It shows you are a strategic, results-oriented professional.

SPEAKER_00

It uses several of our key verbs. Are you ready? Let's do this as our final hear, repeat, and learn. I'll say the full sentence. Please repeat it back. To achieve our goal, we will develop a new strategy to increase efficiency and deliver better results.

SPEAKER_01

Let's say that one more time. It's that good.

SPEAKER_00

To achieve our goal, we will develop a new strategy to increase efficiency and deliver better results.

SPEAKER_01

That sentence is pure gold. It shows you understand the main objective. You have a plan and you're focused on the outcome. It's a game changer.

SPEAKER_00

And that is our goal for you. We want to provide you with the tools to achieve your career goals. If you've enjoyed this lesson, we have a whole library of other episodes you can explore to keep improving your business English.

SPEAKER_01

SPEAKER_00

SPEAKER_01

Until next time, keep boosting your English.
