RJ’s dedication to sourcing 100% US-made materials, even down to the petroleum, exemplifies a commitment to quality and support for local industries, which is increasingly rare and deeply commendable. The comparison between KICK-EEZ' solid, NASA-engineered pads and the hollow, less reliable alternatives further highlighted their dedication to precision and performance.

Collaborations with notable brands like Beretta and Manners Composite Stocks are paving the way for innovative advancements and broader applications of their technology. The lively discussion about their fun and quirky patches, including a personal touch with RJ’s new “Boon” patch, reflects the perfect blend of professionalism and playfulness that characterizes their brand. It is clear that the firearms community thrives on passion, innovation, and a shared commitment to excellence, making Shot Show an unmissable event for industry insiders and enthusiasts alike.

SPEAKER_00

Welcome to Amateurs and Experts Podcast.

SPEAKER_01

We are women who shoot, hunt, and fish. I'm Erica Chin. And I'm Jessica Adnich. It is SHOT Show 2024, and we are coming from the Otis Technology Podcast booth. We're sitting here with RJ from Kickies, and he was just like, we actually found a quiet place.

SPEAKER_03

These headphones are game changer at Shaw. This is like the most peace I've had yet. I'm coming every time.

SPEAKER_01

That's how we should start advertising. Right. Be on our podcast. We'll give you a half hour of peace.

SPEAKER_03

It's a half hour of quietness, you'll love it.

SPEAKER_01

Quietness.

SPEAKER_03

I mean, there's people screaming around here, and we can still like these headphones are amazing.

SPEAKER_01

I know. Nice, peaceful conversation. So investment. Thank you so much for being on the podcast. I'm obviously biased because RJ is one of my clients. They are a phenomenal recoil pad company. And yeah, we're here to talk about the company, um, the products. You guys have new products coming out that came out. So packaging.

SPEAKER_03

Packaging.

SPEAKER_00

I want to talk about the packaging and the logo.

SPEAKER_03

Let's do it. I know Jess says she's biased. We're biased. We do anything that Jess asks us to do. She's been amazing. She's like, come on this podcast. I have no idea. I'm like, I'll be there. Tell me what do I need to bring? Like, yes.

SPEAKER_00

I'm biased.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, there we go. Everyone's biased. That's good. Most biased podcasts.

SPEAKER_01

Right. Yeah. But we're honest about it, though. It's not like the news. We're being honest about our biases. Um the first thing that I want to say too is that Kickies is 100% US made, US-based, and that's something that for a lot of companies, they can't say that or they don't advertise it enough. And so I think it's really important to be like, let's support local.

SPEAKER_03

That's very important to us. And we really strive on the full US made. Like there's a lot of this like assembled in US with international parts stuff going on right now. We even source the petroleum because we're obviously a petroleum-based product. Um, we source our petroleum out of Texas. So like the only actual weird supply chain logistics event we've ever had is the Texas oil freeze a few years ago. And that that hurt us. You know, that that's but we don't source anything from overseas.

SPEAKER_00

Wow, and that's hard.

SPEAKER_03

It's very hard.

SPEAKER_00

And to keep the price down.

SPEAKER_03

And to keep the price down. I mean, we are a premium product, like there's significantly cheaper pads out there than us. I don't think you'll find anything on the market that does what we do. I always say we're the most over-engineered piece of rubber there is. Um, you know, which our engineers would kill me if I called it rubber and not a pistol stick material. Um, but it's the same material that NASA uses to isolate the cameras on board the space shuttle. And they use these itty bitty little grommets that are like they're crazy to look at them in CAD, like it's nuts. And then we have this huge chunk of it that we put on the back of a gun.

SPEAKER_01

Wow.

SPEAKER_03

It's awesome.

SPEAKER_01

And it is it is solid. It's solid. A lot of recoil pads, you might find one in the store that's less expensive. You cut that open and it's hollow at the end.

SPEAKER_03

It's air pockets.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And so we always try to explain that to people too, is it's kind of like those Nike shock shoes, you know?

SPEAKER_01

Oh, you mean these Nike Air Max that I'm wearing right now?

SPEAKER_03

Are you wearing the Air Max with the bubbles in them? Yeah. You're not gonna see a professional bat that I actually like those. Those are promoters are great. Air Max 95s. Um, Air Max 1s. I'm a big fan of those. Um, but the problem with the bubble is when you land or when you shoot and that recoil comes back, you don't know where it's going. It could, that bubble is gonna expand left, it's gonna expand right because it's energy disbursement. And it's squishy. It's squishy. So who knows where your next shot's going? Up, down, what you've got to account for that to get back on target. Our pads go straight back, straight forward.

SPEAKER_01

So I'm so glad I didn't even buy these shoes to use them as a as a part of this analogy because I don't play basketball. I just bought them purely because of the camo.

SPEAKER_03

I think we need to talk about your desert tan camo Nikes. Do they make these amends? I would buy those.

SPEAKER_01

I think they I think they do, actually. Right. I mean, uh Nike's not a sponsor, but I mean they're pretty they're pretty dope.

SPEAKER_03

Those are thank you.

SPEAKER_01

But yeah, the the air pocket is not helpful. I mean, they're nice for shot show, but for shooting, air pockets are not.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yeah. They're not the most the most uh I don't know, predictable on how they recoil. But I want to buy those.

SPEAKER_01

Basically, you have pads for any type of shooting.

SPEAKER_03

Anything. And what so Kiki's a two-second overview, which is kind of fun. It's been around since 1985. It's predominantly been in the incredibly high-end sporting clay market. Um, you know, you're we come on Pirazzis, on Blazers, and stuff, you know, the very, very the high-end sporting clay market. We still do, we dominate that market still. Where we've recently branched into, and what we've seen is the quote unquote tactical shotgun market, or the people doing two-gun, three-gun, the competitive shooters in that. And that's been a really, really fun new addition. Um, this year we have lots of great like uh clients we're working with, and Chisel just did a deal with uh Beretta, and so we found out that Beretta is actually gonna ship this year. You're gonna be able to buy a Beretta pad, or I'm sorry, Beretta 1301 with the chisel stock, it comes with the Kickies pad. So we're doing a lot of fun stuff like that. And then we got into the rifle market, and we're doing something with uh manner's composite stock, so we're on that, and you can check that out at their booth as well. And then they did a gun with CZ, and we're on that as well. So it's a lot of fun stuff.

SPEAKER_01

And oh my gosh, I love that. And it's we've been talking to people about Shot Show, and then it's just you know, it's shit show. You you bring liquid, um Ivy, and emergency, the amount of conversations we had about like how do you prep for Shot with vitamins? Um, but that it's it's also people come here to support the industry, and they also come here for collaboration. And what you just listed are some phenomenal collaborations that are about to come out, and that happens here. I mean, there's a reason why shot shows on people's buckets list because innovation and collaboration happens.

SPEAKER_03

It's fantastic. I mean, even the other day we had a prototype of a pad that we were working with for Genesis Arms on their new little, I'm sure everyone's seen this, the little like mini PDW shotgun they have with laser dressed. So we were able to wrap it a prototype uh sample for them. And it's actually on their booth now. They loved it. They were like, yes, let's move forward with this, let's make it, and you can now go to their booth and demo that little pad that's on the back of their gun. So it is a really fun time for everyone to come together, discuss things. You know, we have a lot of our partners that manufacture different adapters for our pads and everything else. We were able to sit down within our booth and discuss like, okay, how can we work together better? Um, what can we do? Here's a problem we're facing, and they're actually gonna make some adapters for us to have our guns natively fit more and more, or I'm sorry, our pads natively fit more and more guns. So it's an awesome opportunity to collaborate with people. That's exciting. And come bug you guys.

SPEAKER_00

Absolutely. And we're excited about that too. Yes. So it sounds like this year is gonna be a lot of uh new stuff coming out, and we hope so. Yeah, it seems like you're always growing, which is awesome.

SPEAKER_03

We're trying, and um, you know, it's it's an old, it's a legacy company, and we never want to give that up. Like we know where our roots are, and that's we will always respect that and service that industry first, you know. But it's really fun trying to grow into some of these new venues, and you know, it's great. We have great people, you know, to hype up Jesse on this with Design Pod, like to be able to help us branch into these things. I mean, it it takes a village, and and we really, really have gotten that. And that's another fun thing about shot is I could come hang out with Jess, who like we talk on the phone probably daily. You know, like I I can vouch for this, like on my favorites. It's like down like literally at the bottom. Yeah, it's my wife at the top and Jess at the bottom because it's the two easiest buttons for me to hit. So that's like the people I hit the most. Um proof. Yeah, proof on the phone. Uh so it's you know, it's fun getting to sit down with everyone and and look at things together, you know. And you know, Jess has helped with our booth layout. And so come to the booth, like, check out, like, oh, our next year we should change this, we should do this, you know.

SPEAKER_01

Should we get more square footage? We should get more square footage.

SPEAKER_03

We doubled this year our square footage. I'm not doing that again. Uh but like realized like one of our step-in repeats, we kind of need to redesign because of how we've rearranged things. We block what what it showed. So it's fun doing that here. It it's it's a great show. You see all the new products coming out, you get to face to face with the people that you've talked with all year long, and you've worked on projects with, and you've put in the blood, sweat, and tears quite, you know, quite literally on these projects.

SPEAKER_01

We were just talking about that phrase blood, sweat, and tears, literally.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yes.

SPEAKER_03

It's it's actually blood, too. I caught myself on a 3D printer the other day trying to make the Genesis park, so it's truly blood.

SPEAKER_01

It's literally blood. Blood, sweat, and tears.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Well, and the other thing that I love about kickies, I mean, there's obviously a bunch of things, but that the brand is so professional, American-made. You have competition shooters that shoot for you all the way from junior leagues up to Olympic. We actually have Landy Barnes right after you. Yes. And she's now a um, we got her drinking the the kickies juice. But that you guys do fun things like patches.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, our patches are quite silly.

SPEAKER_00

You guys are just fun. But yes, patches. Last year you did uh stickers for Deb. Yes, with her little carry on a horse.

SPEAKER_03

And again, Jess corrected the color of the eyes of the dogs many times for the dog to make it perfect. Yeah. I mean, we work with such a serious level of clientele, but they don't take themselves too seriously. So it's fun to do these absolutely dumb patches and stickers and stuff. And everybody's like, yeah, I didn't think we were ever gonna turn into a patch or swag thing. This year, the first day a shot, um, guy who's one of the guy people at our booth said that there's like 10 people that rush straight to the booth to see what are the new patches? Can we have them? Can we trade them? Can we do this? Two things we got to do.

SPEAKER_01

I like hugged the guys and was like, all right, move over, Frank. I gotta see the patches.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yeah. I mean, we have our like hippo, which I brought to you guys. Some of them we got our hippo eating uh shotgun shells. So we have that. Uh we have a coffer that maybe resembles Greg Norman uh with it. Um, our Spongebob SquarePants one, and then I just had my first child uh actually last Friday, so I'm hoping my wife doesn't know me for being.

SPEAKER_00

Congratulations.

SPEAKER_03

And we have our little boon patch, uh, which is little be this year, and then I'll get rid of them.

SPEAKER_00

No, we need one every year.

SPEAKER_03

I would love to have another child every year, but no, no.

SPEAKER_00

I'm saying now we need a boon patch for a two-year-old, a one-year-old like boon growing up.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. So it's very cute right now. I'm sure there'll be a point where I'm like, okay, I've cleaned up way too much from you, and I'm not making another patch.

SPEAKER_00

Are you kidding? You'll be like, oh, I love you so much. I I need another poop patch. It'll just be a poop emoji with a shotgun.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, poop emoji with a shotgun. When I see you, this is all I have now.

SPEAKER_01

So this this week, I mean, you you've listed a lot of things that you guys have already done. It's Thursday. What are some other things? I know you guys have been out to Vegas previously to do video shoots. You know, when you come here, it's a lot to ramp up for. It's a lot, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And you had a baby.

SPEAKER_03

And I had a baby.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Lots of new stuff. Lots of new stuff.

SPEAKER_01

Lots of new stuff. What does the rest of the week hold for you?

SPEAKER_03

Um, so we have to, as you say, it's always a media circus. Uh, so we have to go around, we gotta film some more stuff. We have a lot more kind of like continuing social media stuff we gotta put out there, a lot more videos, a lot more YouTube stuff. Um, a lot of what we've got coming up, though, is just meetings coming up with potential future customers and previous customers on you know, like recoilless engineering, recoilless engineering is one of the bring up because we just met with them at the booth and then we have a follow-up this afternoon of all the products that they're releasing this year, and we're demoing them at our booth, and then new stuff that hey, we need you guys to come out with this. You know, we need you to do this and this, and so we're trying to kind of help push from what we're hearing from the customer side on our customer service tickets and the guns that we need to be able to fit. We need you guys to make plates for these, we need you to make you know adapters and everything else. So it's a lot of those kind of follow-up meetings. Um and being able to be he's he's from California. We we're meeting with Janice from Portaleon, Idaho. Like we're able to meet with all these people right here and lay, like, have hands on the product we're discussing and what we need to change, what we need to modify, and everything else. So we have a we have probably six more of those scheduled for the next three days, two days, two today and tomorrow. Oh my gosh. Only a day and a half left. Yeah, only a day and a half left.

SPEAKER_00

And I think that's great for Shot Show. I mean, you do get to see the product, you get to feel it, touch it. Um, you know, that's that makes a big difference, I think.

SPEAKER_03

It's huge because we live in such a digital age now. Like Genesis, I I keep referencing them just because I'm staring at their logo and they're right outside the booth here. That little PDW, we have designed that thing in CAD for the last six months. We didn't know how the pad would feel, how it would interact, when it's mounted to the gun, when it's all a finished product, is it gonna catch on your shirt? Is it gonna be comfortable? Are there gonna be hot spots just naturally of the contour of the pad where it hits into the arm? So being able to look at all those things when it's finally here together and then sit down with them and be like, okay, we love this, we need to change this, let's tweak this a little bit, is just great. And then, like, do all the reliefs line up properly and everything else. So it's there's nothing that beats kind of that finished hands-on experience of being able to look at a product, and we're all a lot of us are such perfectionists, including myself and Jess will vouch for this for the amount of times you know we're both go back and forth at each other, like change this, change that. That being able to see it in person allows us to like really, really make sure that we like the way everything's lining up.

SPEAKER_01

But I think that, and that's true, but it speaks back volumes to the brand itself, that that's how much authenticity and heart goes into it, and that's one of the common threads that we've had throughout meeting with guests this week is that they're in this industry because they care about it. Like, it's not some people, you know, they their family the whole family is involved, like it's it's an all-family occasion type of situation.

SPEAKER_03

And I mean, it is, it's such a family industry. It's such like uh I mean, we're a small family-owned company too, but like my wife was remarking on this the other day. Like, the amount of our gunsmiths and just people that reached out, like, hey, congratulations on the baby, all this other stuff. I mean, we had one of our gunsmiths pick up all of our guns, bring them to shot because I wasn't here. We had another one, including Jess, jumped downstairs to help set up with our guys beforehand because they're like, Hey, we know you're not gonna be here, what can we do? It is by far, and I I've worked in technology, I've worked in real estate, like this is by far the most family-oriented, good people industry I've ever come across.

SPEAKER_00

But I think it's really cool that you let us be a part of that because you're making boon patches. Oh, no, you know, so it's a celebration, and we all celebrate with you and you know, help you at whatever we could do, right? Um because we are family and and we're excited for you.

SPEAKER_03

It's great, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

We all are in this fun little bubble together. It is in the firearms industry, you're a you're in a little bubble. You know, it's not something that interacts with every single person, you know. Let's be honest. We're we're kind of like our own little niche. And we all tribe. Yeah, we're our own tribe, but we all love this tribe so much. I mean, this tribe is addicting.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, you just said to her, like, and even just down to like, you know, my camo shoes, right? And I said to Eric at some point, I said, I think I might buy another backpack. She's like, Do you need a backpack? I was like, No.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, yeah, you do. Like, yeah. I have so many backpacks that's sad.

SPEAKER_01

But that's the point, is it like this industry, you just love it so much that you want everything to just reflect it.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, yeah, I have to hide my purchases.

unknown

Yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

That's I I trust me, I totally get it.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it's a good, it's a good problem to have.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I don't know if it's a good problem to have, but it's a problem to have.

SPEAKER_01

It's a problem to have, yes.

SPEAKER_03

And yeah, you come here and you see all the new stuff. And again, it's all people that you know and love, and they're all great people, so they're like, I'll try this out. Look at this new feature, look at that. And they're excited and passionate about it. And there is the care that goes into all these products out here. And they're all, I mean, there's some mega, mega companies out here, don't get me wrong, but a lot of them are smaller mom and pop-based companies, and with that you get the people that truly, truly, truly love the product they're putting to the market.

SPEAKER_01

And we've heard that uh numerous times this week, that people really, the first floor is like being called the floor of innovation. Like people that's the first stop that they go to because they know that those companies, they are putting their last dime into those booths maybe for the first time, and they care. You know, I mean, obviously the companies up here, they do care, but it's different when you've you've reached that point, when you have 1,700 employees across the country type of situation versus hey, I'm flying my family out to work the booth for me. Yep.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, my brother's here with me. He works the booth with me. He's a financial planner, and I I drag him along.

SPEAKER_01

But is it really work? Because he gets to shoot guns. He gets to shoot.

SPEAKER_03

I I don't know if he's still sitting outside, but there's a little VR shooting thing over there, and he's like, I'm gonna go play with this. So yeah, he loves it. So he's probably off at the VR shooting thing or Probably round playing with the gun someplace.

SPEAKER_01

So, what do you foresee for kickies and the next year, five years, ten years? Gosh.

SPEAKER_03

Uh, that is a tricky question. I know that we want to expand more and more into the rifles, the competitive shooting arena. Um, we're gonna constantly be just listening to what the customer wants and trying to respond to that. You know, so we might be coming out with a softer version of our pad specifically for you know the competitive shooters that really, really, you know, have been requesting that. So we we we don't necessarily set out a roadmap, we set out a general idea of where we want to go, but we try to be hyperly flexible on that based on like the feedback we get. Like, I never thought we would put out a softer pad because it's harder to grind, it falls apart quicker, it's everything. And I fought it for the last few years, and everyone's always like, don't do it, it's gonna be a pain. Blah, blah, blah. But our customers always say, like, that's okay, we'll we'll deal with it. And so so we kind of switch on that. We draw like, I would say, broad brush strokes of where we want to go. Like, we want to be more into the um, you know, three gun, two gun, you know, the competitive tactical shotgun arena, if you will. So we kind of steer towards that, and then we just see what happens, and we try to adapt and see what comes in. You know, the long-range shooting, um, which was awesome with like the manners composite to get them on board so early, they kind of generally steer towards that industry, and then we're really working with them to adapt to see, okay, we came out with one pad that was a half inch thick, they met one a little thicker, so what do we need to do? How do we need to you know adapt to that? Um online is constantly a growing space for us. So, how can we get quicker, how can we make the buying process easier for our customers? You know, what technology can we use? Whether it's the um the cameras on your phone, being able to measure your your guns, you know, the lidar that's built into all these iPhones now, being able to measure the gun and tell a pad that's the closest pad to it, you know, without having to measure. Like we're constantly trying to think of new things we can do to make that experience easier and better for our customer. Um so uh where are we gonna be in five years? Hopefully further down that path. What exactly are we? Further down the awesome path. What exactly are we gonna do? I don't have a clue.

SPEAKER_00

All of that stuff, I'm just like mind-blown. I I would not even think about everything you just I mean, especially and the consume consumer, as a consumer, I want I want easy. Yeah, and I would never think of all that stuff that goes into, you know, like how how can you get one that's fitted easier for a while.

SPEAKER_03

Like cheek pads. We we had we used to sell a cheek pad, we still do sell a cheek pad that was you you could cut it. We sold it, and everyone called that you could cut it themselves. Well, people don't want to cut their own cheek pad for their guns and their different so we've now got a lot of people. Some people should not be allowed. Yeah, some people shouldn't play with scissors. Um but we we get that as well. But we now cut out a lot of different patterns for customers and stuff like that, and you know, can put logos on cheek pads and stuff like that for customers, both at a consumer level and you know, or business to business level as well as to direct to consumer level. So yeah, we we try to just make it as as catered to our customers as we possibly can and what whatever that may entail.

SPEAKER_01

So I think that's fantastic and definitely leads to success.

SPEAKER_03

Hopefully.

SPEAKER_01

Hopefully. Well, I say yes because I'm on the team.

SPEAKER_00

Jess is on the team, so I mean the two of you, what could go wrong?

SPEAKER_03

The problems that arise, Jess has to hear about them anyways.

SPEAKER_01

So yeah, I mean, we're in it together.

SPEAKER_03

Half the time we'll come up with something and she'll just be like, I don't know if you should say that and do that. That seems like a pain. Like, no, no, we're we're figuring this out. We're gonna do it. We're gonna do it. We somehow figure it out.

SPEAKER_01

We do and we get it done. Yeah, yes, problem solvers.

SPEAKER_03

Yes, we have figured out somehow.

SPEAKER_00

Yes. So if uh somebody wants uh wants to get in touch with you or see your products, how do they do that?

SPEAKER_03

Uh kikysproducts.com. That's easy. Yeah, super easy. We have all the social, well, I say all the socials, I don't even know what the social media site is.

SPEAKER_01

Socials are Instagram, we have Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube.

SPEAKER_03

That's right.

SPEAKER_01

YouTube and Rumble.

SPEAKER_03

Well, you're right, we are on Rumble as well. Yeah. I we don't have TikTok.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, no, and I don't think we'll ever do TikTok.

SPEAKER_03

I could do a little dance and shake a pat or something. I don't know.

SPEAKER_01

But Frank, Frank could do real good on TikTok.

SPEAKER_03

For us, but um yeah, so any of those is a great way to reach out to us. Um our website's probably the number one, and that shows a lot of the pictures of our pads and everything else. YouTube's a really, really growing platform for us where we're trying to showcase a lot of our customers and the products they offer just to show and to show the people how they can integrate our pad into their shooting experience and make it have a better time.

SPEAKER_00

So well, thank you for being on our podcast. Thank you guys so much. It's a blast. It's been fun. Yeah, just do it again.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, we do have we do have a uh a baby boom gift for you that we will give to you from the Woma.

SPEAKER_03

All right, let's see here. So it's themed. We have blue paper, because it's still baby boy.

SPEAKER_01

Baby boy, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Baby boy. Try to not open this in the microphone.

SPEAKER_01

That's alright. I mean, people like that kind of sound stuff now.

unknown

Uh-oh.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, yes. We got some clothes. So we start with a hello, I'm new here little shirt. Oh, three to six months. I this is weird. I my wife is making fun of me because I find baby clothes very, very cute, and I never thought I would. Like just buying so much stuff. Hello, I'm new here. This is great. And is this shark theme?

SPEAKER_01

Obviously.

SPEAKER_03

Obviously, shark theme for Jess. So we got orange, you the sweetest, and it's a shark eating an orange. I love this.

SPEAKER_02

This is so cute.

SPEAKER_03

My wife is gonna love you guys. And then a two pajama set. Also with sharks.

SPEAKER_00

Baby shark.

SPEAKER_03

Baby shark. I am staying away from that baby shark song. My brother's little one runs around the house like baby shark, baby. I'm like, I can't do it. So oh, believe me, but Baby Boone will have the baby shark themed outfits now, but we're gonna try to.

SPEAKER_01

Well, my goal is to brainwash, I mean, educate any tiny human in my life to love sharks. So this is the first of many that you know your family's gonna be receiving.

SPEAKER_03

This is awesome.

SPEAKER_01

But it's all from Wilma, so we really appreciate you being a sponsor for She Never Quit and supporting us.

SPEAKER_00

We appreciate that. I appreciate it. And we'll have you on again today. Yeah, so much fun.

SPEAKER_03

Perfect. I don't even know what we're gonna talk about, but we'll do it again next year, same time.

SPEAKER_00
