us, I don't know if I always can say, I see us in what he's saying here in this scripture. 00:01:00.369 --> 00:01:05.090 Or Lord, what what do we need to receive from what you're saying in the literally taking, well, not literally, it's figuratively, but go with me here. 00:07:21.409 --> 00:07:24.609 He's taking lemons and he's making lemonade, right? 00:07:24.849 --> 00:07:31.490 He's saying, these are my circumstances and my predicament, though, is still advancing the gospel. 00:07:31.649 --> 00:07:36.529 He says in verse 12, everything that has happened to me here has helped. second. 00:07:44.529 --> 00:07:53.089 In in Acts chapter 21 through 23, 22, uh 3, excuse me, Paul was arrested, accused, and held. 00:07:54.129 --> 00:07:57.889 He spent two years in custody. 00:07:59.089 --> 00:07:59.810 Two years. 00:07:59.969 --> 00:08:02.609 We read that in Acts 24 through 26. 00:08:03.969 --> 00:08:05.810 He appealed to Caesar. 00:08:06.050 --> 00:08:08.930 Next thing you know, they're like, oh, he's a Roman citizen. 00:08:09.089 --> 00:08:11.250 They place him on this ship. 00:08:11.889 --> 00:08:16.609 Because any Roman citizen that appeals to Caesar can automatically go to Caesar. 00:08:16.849 --> 00:08:21.329 They put him on this ship and he's shipwrecked. 00:08:22.849 --> 00:08:27.089 Many of you would hear that and you'd think, okay, that's an opportunity to escape. 00:08:28.209 --> 00:08:30.209 That's not what happened. 00:08:32.129 --> 00:08:34.210 He's still taken to Rome. 00:08:34.769 --> 00:08:43.889 In Rome, he is guarded, chained, and waiting for trial that has one of two outcomes: his release or his death. 00:08:48.690 --> 00:09:00.290 So many Christians immediately go to crisis mode and think God is not for them if their direct deposit doesn't hit on the day it's supposed to. 00:09:01.490 --> 00:09:08.210 So many Christians go into crisis mode the very moment they show up to church and their parking spot is taken. 00:09:30.930 --> 00:09:45.170 He's cut off from his travel, he's cut off from his churches, and every circumstance that might seem ideal, but he is saying, I view this as a help to spread the gospel. circumstances that are happening in your life, are you choosing to say, This is my opportunity to advance the gospel of Jesus Christ? 00:10:02.770 --> 00:10:05.889 Or are you saying, this is a hindrance in my life? 00:10:09.730 --> 00:10:15.090 You know, Paul identified that the chains themselves are defined by Christ, not the charge. 00:10:15.570 --> 00:10:19.170 It wasn't the charge that he got that got him there that's defined by Christ. 00:10:19.410 --> 00:10:22.370 And so he's looking at his chains as this opportunity. 00:10:22.530 --> 00:10:31.410 And here's the thing: if you keep living like you have this hired Jesus, you need the circumstances in your life to cooperate. 00:10:32.770 --> 00:10:38.129 Well, I can't do this if we say those kind of things all the time. something you need to embrace a life defined by Jesus. 00:10:55.170 --> 00:10:58.210 Watches as the chains advance the world. 00:11:00.210 --> 00:11:09.889 It says, your gospel is gonna go out as a result of my obedience to where I'm at today. 00:11:11.009 --> 00:11:12.450 Not tomorrow. 00:11:13.009 --> 00:11:15.170 The circumstances for today. 00:11:16.690 --> 00:11:23.570 There was a missionary named Andrew Brunson in 2016, October of 2016. 00:11:24.450 --> 00:11:29.490 He and his wife had spent years planting churches throughout the country of Turkey. 00:11:29.889 --> 00:11:34.050 And the work, it was it was spreading, but it was really small. 00:11:34.690 --> 00:11:40.930 And all of a sudden, he's arrested on espionage and terrorism charges, and he's held for two years. 00:11:41.330 --> 00:11:46.770 His wife is in prison also, and he faced the possibility of life in prison. 00:11:47.490 --> 00:11:52.850 His wife Noreen was released a little bit later, or earlier, I should say, than him. 00:11:53.250 --> 00:12:04.610 And here's the thing: he wasn't a political operative, and at his hearing, he said in Turkish that he was a follower of Jesus Christ and that his purpose in Turkey was to tell people about Jesus. 00:12:04.770 --> 00:12:07.330 He said, That is my purpose. 00:12:09.570 --> 00:12:17.810 All of a sudden, what looked like an end of his ministry became the very thing that carried his story. 00:12:18.850 --> 00:12:26.930 Believers all of a sudden in Brazil, Israel, China, and across the United States were praying for a pastor most of them have never met. 00:12:28.610 --> 00:12:36.050 After his release, he said one house church network in China had printed one million brochures about his situation. 00:12:39.009 --> 00:12:45.970 He had never been able to speak to that many people about his ministry until he was in chains. 00:12:49.170 --> 00:12:57.970 The imprisonment advanced the word farther than the open years he had ministering the gospel. 00:13:00.690 --> 00:13:09.170 Church, our faith, no matter the circumstances, speaks louder than the predicament. 00:13:12.129 --> 00:13:27.170 And so all of a sudden, what what we need to do is we need to we need to transform our mind into the thinking that if if I am walking in obedience to the Lord, every circumstance that is in my life is an opportunity to glorify him. 00:13:28.530 --> 00:13:31.490 And here's the thing that we need to eliminate in our mind. 00:13:34.370 --> 00:13:37.090 Sin is not your circumstance. 00:13:38.610 --> 00:13:42.290 Like sin is a sickness that we need to get rid of. 00:13:43.490 --> 00:13:49.090 So we can't say, well, I'm I'm just I'm just hindered by this thing and God hasn't taken it away. 00:13:51.330 --> 00:13:53.970 We're misrepresenting what the circumstances are. 00:13:54.210 --> 00:13:57.410 We need to be walking in obedience to the Lord first, amen. 00:13:58.129 --> 00:14:02.050 We need to actively seek to remove the sin in our life. 00:14:04.930 --> 00:14:07.810 But then there's the circumstances that we can't help. 00:14:09.889 --> 00:14:18.690 The imprisonment, the diagnosis, the sudden rejection by family, like all the things that we can go on and on and on about. 00:15:00.210 --> 00:15:01.970 Listen to verse 15. 00:15:03.009 --> 00:15:12.370 He says, It's true that some are preaching out of jealousy and rivalry. 00:15:13.810 --> 00:15:16.690 But others preach about Christ with pure motives. 00:15:16.930 --> 00:15:21.730 They preach because they love me, for they know that I have been appointed to defend the good news. 00:15:22.050 --> 00:15:25.650 Those others they do not have pure motives as they preach about Christ. 00:15:25.810 --> 00:15:33.810 They preach with selfish ambition, not This guy's in prison. 00:16:02.450 --> 00:16:09.490 And some people are using that as an opportunity, kind of contrary to Paul. 00:16:11.250 --> 00:16:20.370 And he's recognizing there's these two factions that there's some that are preaching out of jealousy and rivalry because Paul's in chains. 00:16:21.330 --> 00:16:26.930 And maybe they're thinking that their preaching raises Paul's affliction. 00:16:27.090 --> 00:16:29.650 Many doubted his calling because of his suffering. 00:16:29.730 --> 00:16:38.370 And so here's the thing, though, Paul recognizes they aren't mocking Christ, they are preaching Christ and aiming the success at Paul's pain. 00:16:44.210 --> 00:16:49.170 And Paul had outed people before that do preach a fake gospel. 00:16:49.250 --> 00:16:52.050 Listen to what he said in Galatians 1, 6 through 9. 00:16:52.210 --> 00:16:59.009 He said, I am shocked that you are turning away so soon from God, who called you to himself through the loving mercy of Christ. 00:16:59.250 --> 00:17:04.930 You are following a different way that pretends to be the good news, but it is not the good news at all. 00:17:05.089 --> 00:17:10.849 You are being fooled by those who deliberately twist the truth concerning Christ. 00:17:11.410 --> 00:17:19.889 Let God's curse fall on anyone, including us or even an angel from heaven who preaches a different kind of good news than the one we preach to you. 00:17:20.049 --> 00:17:30.210 I say again, what we have said before, if anyone preaches any other good news than the one you welcomed, let that person be cursed. 00:17:34.449 --> 00:17:37.329 There's a difference, and Paul recognizes it. 00:17:37.970 --> 00:17:42.529 Because here he's saying, these guys are preaching in Galatians, these guys are preaching a different Corinthians 11, 4, he says, you happily put up with whatever anyone tells you, even if they preach a different Jesus than the one we preach, or a different kind of spirit than the one you received, or a different kind of gospel than the one you the one you believed. 00:18:20.369 --> 00:18:22.529 And so you and I, this is what we have to do. 00:18:22.689 --> 00:18:28.609 Yeah, so if someone, if 00:18:59.089 And Paul recognizes he's like, hey, others are preaching because of their love for me, and they're embracing that I've defended the gospel and they're ready to defend the gospel, and so you're adding to your church, you're growing, but I'm suffering for this. 00:20:15.730 --> 00:20:18.049 So don't I kind of get some credit here? 00:20:18.210 --> 00:20:43.089 You know, I think about churches that I I go to these uh these retreats and these conferences where other pastors are, and there are some that God has called to pastor that small town church, and they're that community pastor for all their lives, and they're looking at what we're doing here, and they're like, Well, I like I I've heard, like, well, I'm not as successful as you. 00:20:44.529 --> 00:20:46.529 I'm like, stop that. 00:20:47.409 --> 00:20:48.449 Stop that. 00:20:50.049 --> 00:21:01.970 I'm so thankful that I had pastors that would not allow me to think that way for five years in Prairie City, Illinois, where the only other business was a nursing home. 00:21:03.649 --> 00:21:08.849 And the matriarch of the church let me know that if I ever close the door, she has rights to the property. 00:21:11.009 --> 00:21:15.889 And I'm sitting there thinking, Lord, if you've called me to suffer here for the rest of my life, I'm here. 00:21:20.929 --> 00:21:27.250 Don't measure success through the lens of the 00:22:50.689 Verse 18, it's a long verse, and we're gonna pick up halfway through. 00:22:53.250 --> 00:22:55.809 He says, and I will continue to rejoice. 00:22:57.089 --> 00:23:07.569 For I know that as you pray for me, and the Spirit of Jesus Christ helps me, this will lead to my deliverance. 00:23:08.449 --> 00:23:25.250 For I fully expect and hope that I will never be ashamed, but that I will continue, continue to be bold for Christ as I have been in the past, and I trust that my life will bring honor to Christ, whether I live or die. 00:23:27.409 --> 00:23:34.769 Listen to verse 21 because everything hinges on this, because Paul says, for to me, living means living for Christ. 00:23:36.049 --> 00:23:40.049 And dying, dying is even better. 00:23:41.490 --> 00:23:47.569 But if I 00:25:04.769 --> 00:25:15.169 And he's feeling these being hard-pressed on every side, but not for reasons that you might think, because his heart him being hard-pressed is saying, Hey, I'd rather when Paul says dying is even better, you're like, well, how morbid. 00:26:09.490 --> 00:26:12.129 He's not thinking about the physical act of death. 00:26:12.689 --> 00:26:14.210 He's like, I already
