The Furnace Repair That Explained My Whole Generation

I have a category of customer in their forties who I find easier to work with than almost any other group. Mostly born between 1977 and 1983. A six-year window. Not Gen X, exactly. Not millennial, exactly. There is a name that got popular about ten years ago. Xennials.
When his furnace quits, the Xennial calls me. On the phone. Like a regular person. He does not first diagnose it from a YouTube video or post in three Facebook groups. He asks reasonable questions, trusts that I know things he does not, and trusts himself enough to push back if my explanation does not match what he is seeing. He is calibrated. Sarah Stankorb named this cohort in 2014: the last analog childhood, the first digital adulthood.
This is me, in Kingfisher, on why the people who remember both worlds make the steadiest customers I have, and what that says about the rest of us.

When your furnace dies in, like the absolute dead of winter, or maybe your air conditioning gives out during a brutal heat wave, you have a very specific expectation of what the repair process is going to look like.

SPEAKER_00Yeah, because you're focused entirely on the hardware. To you, the broken thermostat is the only problem in the room.
SPEAKER_01Aaron Powell But what if um while that technician is diagnosing your air conditioner, they are actually diagnosing you.
SPEAKER_00I love this concept so much. It completely flips the script.
SPEAKER_01It really does. Yeah. What if the way you react to that broken machine or like the specific way you communicate with the repair person and how you process the anxiety of the whole situation? What if all of that provides a perfect diagnostic read of your generational operating system?
SPEAKER_00It turns an everyday interaction into this literal psychological stress test.
SPEAKER_01Right. So today we're going to explore how this specific technological area you grew up in secretly calibrates your brain, like your problem-solving skills and your everyday communication style.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's just huge.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. We're looking at whether your daily frustrations with coworkers or um those bizarre miscommunications you have with family members over something as simple as a text message, whether that might just be a clash of these invisible operating systems.
SPEAKER_00And our guide for this deep dive is a man named Dave Hartzall. He's a master HVAC technician based in Oklahoma.
SPEAKER_0145 years of experience, right?
SPEAKER_00Exactly. 45 years in the trade. So we're taking Dave's decades of literal field work and we're cross-referencing it with psychological research on generational cohort effects.
SPEAKER_01Aaron Powell Along with a sociological framework that perfectly captures what Dave has been seeing in people's homes for almost half a century.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And Dave arrived at this central premise after thousands and thousands of service calls.
SPEAKER_01Out of his entire 45-year career, across all demographics, neighborhoods, income brackets, there is one very narrow six-year window of customers who are universally the easiest to work with.
SPEAKER_00The absolute easiest. No, not at all. It has profound implications for how human brains adapt to technology, and more importantly, how we're going to handle the coming decades of massive technological change.
SPEAKER_01Aaron Powell Okay, let's unpack this because we really need to define exactly who we're talking about here.
SPEAKER_00Definitely.
SPEAKER_01Trevor Burrus, Jr. Dave identified a highly specific microgeneration. We're talking about people born between 1977 and 1983.
SPEAKER_00Aaron Ross Powell They fall into this strange gap, really. Because they don't fit perfectly into the um cynical latchkey kid mold of Generation X.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and they certainly aren't digital native millennials.
SPEAKER_00Aaron Powell Right. So sociologist Sarah Stankorb actually coined a term for this exact group back in 2014. It gained a lot of traction a few years later. She called them xennials.
SPEAKER_01The Xennials. I love that term. And what defines them isn't a shared aesthetic or a specific pop culture moment. It's an incredibly unique technological timeline.
SPEAKER_00Exactly. They had a purely analog childhood, but a fully digital adulthood.
SPEAKER_01Which is wild when you think about it.
SPEAKER_00It is. The timing of their brain development is the key here. Stankorb and other researchers noted that this cohort was old enough to remember a childhood and adolescence completely devoid of the internet at home.
SPEAKER_01No cell phones at all.
SPEAKER_00No cell phones, no immediate on-demand access to information. If they wanted to know something, they had to physically go to a library and open an encyclopedia. Right. But they were young enough that when they crossed the threshold into the workplace and adulthood, all of those digital tools were suddenly present and they were rapidly integrating into society.
SPEAKER_01The markers of this transition are just so visceral. I mean, think about being a 13-year-old and sitting at a kitchen table learning how to write a physical paper check.
SPEAKER_00Oh, balancing a checkbook ledger.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But then by the time you're 19, you were setting up your first email address.
SPEAKER_00It's a huge leap.
SPEAKER_01It is. You had to literally print out map quest directions on like five sheets of printer paper to drive to your college visits, hoping you didn't miss a turn. But then by the time you could afford your first new car, it had a digital GPS built right into the dashboard.
SPEAKER_00They lived right on the fault line of the analog to digital transition. They didn't just witness the shift, their brains actually matured through it. And Dave Hertzl realized that his daily service routes are essentially tracking the results of that exact transition.
SPEAKER_01I mean, think of Dave's HVAC truck as basically a rolling sociology lab.
SPEAKER_00That's a great way to put it.
SPEAKER_01Because high stress home repairs are actually a surprisingly great litmus test for how we handle ambiguity.
SPEAKER_00Oh, absolutely.
SPEAKER_01When your house is freezing cold and your kids are complaining, your polite societal mask slips. You revert to your foundational programming.
SPEAKER_00You fall back on whatever tools make you feel safe. Because when people are under stress, cognitive load increases. Right. And they default to whatever communication and problem-solving mechanisms they trust the most. And Dave gets to see that raw, unfiltered behavior multiple times a day, every single day, across every age group.
SPEAKER_01Aaron Powell So how does that MapQuest to GPS pipeline actually change their modern-day behavior in the middle of a furnace breakdown? Like how does that make them quote unquote easy customers?
SPEAKER_00Aaron Powell Well, it comes down to a kind of technological bilingualism. Dave observes that the Xennial customer doesn't frantically try to diagnose their broken furnace via a YouTube tutorial before he even pulls into the driveway.
SPEAKER_01Right. They aren't like tearing the machine apart themselves.
SPEAKER_00No. They don't pull three different group chats for advice or immediately post on a neighborhood Facebook group asking for a consensus on what a rattling noise means.
SPEAKER_01They just assess the physical problem, realize it's beyond them, and pick up the phone to call him.
SPEAKER_00Exactly. But this is the crucial distinction, they aren't stubbornly bound to the phone call either. Dave finds them completely comfortable with an email follow-up or a brief text message to confirm a part is ordered. Whatever digital channel makes the logistics of the repair easiest, they adapt to it.
SPEAKER_01Okay. To really see why this fluency is special, you kind of have to look at the extremes on either side of this microgeneration. Right.
SPEAKER_00You do. On one side, you have older analog only customers. Right. When their system breaks, they often carry a deep distrust of digital interventions. They want a physical human being they can look in the eye and shake hands with.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah. They absolutely do not want the automated text message saying the technician is, you know, seven minutes away. They don't trust it.
SPEAKER_00Not at all. And they certainly don't want to use a Wi-Fi-enabled app to control their thermostat.
SPEAKER_01No, that feels like a total loss of control to them.
SPEAKER_00Right. And when it's time to pay the bill, they want a physical printed receipt handed directly to them so they can file it in a cabinet.
SPEAKER_01Which is totally fair. But then on the total opposite end of the spectrum, you have the younger, digital-only customers. And their reaction to the stress of a broken machine is entirely different. Trevor Burrus, Jr.
SPEAKER_00Completely different. The younger demographic often carries a deep distrust of unscripted analog interactions.
SPEAKER_01Yes. They actively avoid phone calls.
SPEAKER_00They want everything documented in writing before anyone even shows up. If the technician arrives, they vastly prefer a silent text message from the driveway saying I'm outside, rather than having a stranger knock loudly on their front door.
SPEAKER_01Oh, for sure. If you knock loudly on a 22-year-old's front door unannounced today, they don't think, oh, the repair man is here. They think, who is committing this act of violence against my piece?
SPEAKER_00Exactly. They just want the silent text.
SPEAKER_01And naturally, they demand a PDF receipt emailed to them instantly because physical paper is just clutter.
SPEAKER_00Right. Which brings us back to the uzennial in the metal.
SPEAKER_01The bilingual ones.
SPEAKER_00Dave calls them bilingual because they want the PDF receipt for their hard drive, but they also want the printed paper copy to stick on the refrigerator for when their mom comes to visit and asks what work got done.
SPEAKER_01Okay. I hear what Dave is saying, but I I really have to push back here for a second. Sure. Go ahead. Isn't it highly possible? We're just talking about basic customer service manners.
SPEAKER_00How do you mean?
SPEAKER_01I mean, I know plenty of boomers who are perfectly happy getting a PDF receipt, and plenty of 20-somethings who are perfectly polite in person. Is this actually a hardwired generational trait, or is Dave just projecting a pattern onto polite people who don't yell at him?
SPEAKER_00It's a really fair challenge. But the scientific literature actually backs Dave up on this. It points to a structural difference, not just good manners. Really? Yeah. What we're talking about is grounded in empirical psychology under the umbrella of cohort effects.
SPEAKER_01Aaron Powell Okay, what exactly is a cohort effect? Let's define that.
SPEAKER_00A cohort effect describes how the specific environmental, cultural, and technological conditions of your childhood physically and psychologically shape your adult preferences in measurable ways.
SPEAKER_01Oh wow.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Your brain builds its neural pathways based on the environment it's trying to survive in. And the cohort effect for the analog to digital transition is considered one of the strongest ever recorded.
SPEAKER_01So it's literally hardwired into their cognitive development.
SPEAKER_00Exactly. Think about the introduction of the iPhone in 2007. Compare a person who was 10 years old when that screen became the center of society versus a person who was 40 years old.
SPEAKER_01Right. Totally different stages of life.
SPEAKER_00The 10-year-old's brain was still in a highly plastic state. It was forming its baseline understanding of how information is gathered and how relationships are maintained.
SPEAKER_01And the 40-year-old.
SPEAKER_00The 40-year-old's brain was already fully formed. They were just adapting a new tool into an existing analog framework.
SPEAKER_01And the Zenioles were in their 20s in 2007.
SPEAKER_00Yes. They adopted the smartphone and ubiquitous internet as young adults, but they already had years of fully analog adulthood underneath them. Right. They had already navigated the world, formed complex relationships, and solved physical problems without a supercomputer in their pocket.
SPEAKER_01So what does this all mean? Like how does it play out practically?
SPEAKER_00It fundamentally changes how they operate.
SPEAKER_01It really does come back to linguistics, doesn't it? Like it's the difference between me using Google Translate on my phone to try and survive a trip to a foreign country versus someone who actually grew up in a bilingual household.
SPEAKER_00That analogy hits the nail on the head.
SPEAKER_01The older generation is using Google Translate to understand the digital world. The younger generation is using it to understand the messy analog world. But the Xennial doesn't have to translate digital to analog or analog to digital. They just speak both natively.
SPEAKER_00Exactly. They learned both systems as primary modes of survival. They don't have to translate one through the lens of the other.
SPEAKER_01Which is such a massive advantage.
SPEAKER_00It is. And this fluency fundamentally changes how their brains process reality and approach problem solving. Which brings us to a really crucial observation Dave makes.
SPEAKER_01Right, about something called iterative diagnosis.
SPEAKER_00Yes. Iterative diagnosis.
SPEAKER_01Here's where it gets really interesting. Because this is where Dave takes his boots on the ground HVAC experience and turns it into pure philosophy.
SPEAKER_00He really does.
SPEAKER_01Because a broken furnace isn't just a broken furnace, it's a puzzle with missing pieces.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So how do these different cohorts handle the ambiguity of a puzzle?
SPEAKER_00Well, Dave notes that when a younger digital native customer is faced with a mechanical problem they don't understand, they expect a definitive instant answer.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, they've been trained their entire lives by digital tool to believe that all answers are lookup usable.
SPEAKER_00Because the digital world is built on code. It's a binary system.
SPEAKER_01Right. Cause Y equals fix Z every single time.
SPEAKER_00They expect the physical world to function like a drop-down menu. If the system is making a specific noise, there must be a definitive cause and a guaranteed fix that can be executed immediately.
SPEAKER_01So when Dave looks at a furnace and says, well, it could be one of three things. It might be the blower motor or it might just be the capacitor. We have to test them one by one. That younger customer often becomes highly anxious.
SPEAKER_00They do. The ambiguity feels like incompetence to them. Because in a digital system, ambiguity is an error.
SPEAKER_01Oh, that makes so much sense. And the older customers, how do they handle the ambiguity?
SPEAKER_00The older customers often demand that same absolute certainty, but for a completely different reason.
SPEAKER_01Interesting. Why?
SPEAKER_00They grew up in an era where tradesmen and professionals were viewed as absolute, unquestionable authorities. In their paradigm, the mechanic or the doctor is certainly supposed to know the answer immediately through sheer expertise.
SPEAKER_01So admitting you have to guess and check feels like a failure of authority.
SPEAKER_00Exactly. But the Xennial sits comfortably in the middle.
SPEAKER_01Because they are native to the analog world, they know that physical reality is incredibly messy. They know it doesn't have a quick search result or a drop-down menu for every problem. I mean, think about how they grew up. If the TV reception was fuzzy, you didn't download a patch.
SPEAKER_00No, you definitely didn't.
SPEAKER_01You walked over and tinkered with the rabbit ear antennas until it looked somewhat clear. You just messed with it.
SPEAKER_00And because of that, they are deeply comfortable with the fact that diagnosis is an iterative process. You try something, you observe the result, you adjust, and you try again.
SPEAKER_01So when Dave says, Let me swap out this part first, and if it doesn't work, we'll look at the ductwork, they don't panic.
SPEAKER_00Not at all. They trust the professional without abdicating their own common sense. And they trust themselves enough to push back gently if the explanation doesn't match what they're seeing.
SPEAKER_01I feel like the temptation here is to overly romanticize this microgeneration.
SPEAKER_00Oh, for sure.
SPEAKER_01To frame them as these perfectly balanced, wise sages of technology. But that completely ignores the reality of what it took to get that calibration.
SPEAKER_00It wasn't easy.
SPEAKER_01No. This transition was not a walk in the park. It was deeply psychologically painful.
SPEAKER_00It was incredibly difficult. Zenials didn't get the advantages of either era without absorbing the intense disadvantages of both.
SPEAKER_01They survived all the messy, unfiltered, unshielded pain of an analog adolescence. I mean, think about middle school in the early 90s. Brutal. The bullying wasn't happening in a hidden group chat. It was happening via three-way phone calling traps.
SPEAKER_00Oh man, the three-way call.
SPEAKER_01Yes, where someone would silently listen in while you confessed a secret. It was cruel notes folded up and passed in homeroom for literally everyone to see.
SPEAKER_00There was no digital shield to hide behind. It was in your face, inescapable social dynamics. You had to learn how to read a room and de-escalate tension in real time.
SPEAKER_01And then just as they reached adulthood, just as they were trying to establish their careers and figure out who they were, they were hit with the absolute whiplash of the digital era.
SPEAKER_00They had to navigate the Wild West emergence of social media.
SPEAKER_01They were the first to deal with the sudden permanence of a digital footprint and the crushing psychological weight of chronic internet-fueled comparison.
SPEAKER_00They took the hits from the analog physical world and then turned around and took the hits from the digital psychological world.
SPEAKER_01Right. So think about your own life for a second. When you face an ambiguous, stressful problem, whether it's a broken air conditioner, a complicated project at work, or a messy miscommunication with a friend.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Do you panic and start looking for the metaphorical search bar for a clean binary fix? Or do you accept that the real world is messy and you're just going to have to tinker with it until you figure it out?
SPEAKER_00That tolerance for tinkering, that acceptance of ambiguity is exactly what Dave is highlighting. The pain of surviving both the analog and digital eras is precisely what forged this unique resilience.
SPEAKER_01It's incredible.
SPEAKER_00And Dave strongly believes this isn't just a nice trait for a customer to have. He sees it as a vital, necessary mandate for the future of society.
SPEAKER_01A mandate. That's a really heavy word for a guy fixing air conditioners in Oklahoma to use. But Dave is looking ahead, isn't he?
SPEAKER_00He is. He's making a very specific prediction about what happens over the next 20 years as this 1977 to 1983 cohort ages into the most senior positions in government, in business, and in our communities.
SPEAKER_01So what's his prediction?
SPEAKER_00Dave argues that their bilingualism is going to transition from being a personal convenience into a crucial usable skill for the entire country. We are facing massive infrastructural and technological transitions right now. And the Xennials are uniquely positioned because they are the only ones who possess the lived experience to effectively talk to both sides of the generational divide.
SPEAKER_01They're the translators. Exactly. I mean, think about the modern workplace. They are the ones who have to sit down with their boomer bosses and explain how to navigate cloud-based digital infrastructure without making them feel obsolete. And then, in the very next meeting, turn around and explain to their Gen Z junior staff how to function and make decisions when the digital infrastructure inevitably fails or produces an ambiguous result.
SPEAKER_00Dave's ultimate message to this cohort is incredibly profound. He writes in his reflections, you were calibrated to it by accident, but you are calibrated to it.
SPEAKER_01Calibrated by accident. I love that. It wasn't some grand intentional design. It was just the random luck of being born in 1980 instead of 1970 or 1990.
SPEAKER_00Right. But now that they have this specific cognitive calibration, they have a responsibility to use it.
SPEAKER_01Dave is pleading with them to recognize this bilingualism as a real tangible leadership skill.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01To actively step in and be the bridge.
SPEAKER_00To help the younger generation understand that not every single workplace interaction needs to be documented in a defensive email thread. Sometimes you just need to walk down the hall or pick up the phone to resolve a conflict quickly.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_00And simultaneously to help the older generation let go of their fear and adapt to the new tools that are absolutely required to function in modern society.
SPEAKER_01So if you're listening to this right now and you fall into that xenial micro generation, or even if you just recognize that you've developed this bilingual skill set through your own experiences, take this as a call to action. Recognize the value of your calibration. Step in when you see those communication breakdowns happening at work or around the dinner table at Thanksgiving. Translate for people, be the bridge.
SPEAKER_00When you pull back and look at Dave's 45 years of wisdom, it offers a really calming synthesis.
SPEAKER_01It really does.
SPEAKER_00The value of this deep dive goes so far beyond making an HBAC technician's day a little easier. It's a lens for understanding that the intense friction we often feel with other generations isn't born out of malice or stubbornness. Right.
SPEAKER_01The frustration over a younger coworker refusing to call a client or an older parent refusing to use online banking.
SPEAKER_00It's simply a difference in our foundational calibration.
SPEAKER_01It's just a difference in the operating system we were installed with based on the year we were born. Realizing that instantly diffuses so much of the anger and judgment we carry around every day.
SPEAKER_00It gives you so much more empathy.
SPEAKER_01It really does. But um before we wrap up, I want to leave you with one final thought to mull over.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_01Because everything we've discussed today has been hyper focused on the analog to digital transition.
SPEAKER_00The shift from paper ledgers and landlines to the internet and smartphones.
SPEAKER_01Right. But we aren't stopping there. Because right now, today, we are sitting in the dead center of an equally massive, if not significantly larger, paradigm shift.
SPEAKER_00Oh.
SPEAKER_01A human to AI transition.
SPEAKER_00Oh, wow. Yeah. This raises an incredibly important question about the next cycle of cohort effects.
SPEAKER_01Doesn't it? We are watching the next major neurological rewiring happen in real time.
SPEAKER_00We really are.
SPEAKER_01If the 1977 and 1983 cohort became the crucial bridge generation because they straddled the digital divide, it makes you wonder what micro generation is currently in their adolescence right now, straddling the line between a purely human-driven internet and a fully AI-driven reality.
SPEAKER_00Oh, that gives me chills. Think about the kids who are 12 to 18 years old right now. They remember what it was like to search the internet and find answers written entirely by other human beings. But they are entering adulthood and the workforce in a world where AI agents synthesize, predict, and generate reality for them on demand.
SPEAKER_01Will they be the new bilingual bridge in 20 years? Are the middle schoolers of today going to be the ones tasked with translating what it meant to be purely human to a future world entirely integrated with artificial intelligence?
SPEAKER_00It's a fascinating parallel. The specific technology changes, but the societal need for those translators, the people who survived the messy pain of the transition, that need remains absolutely constant.
SPEAKER_01So the next time something breaks in your life, whether it's your air conditioner, a complicated project at work, or a messy relationship, take a second to look at how you try to fix it.
SPEAKER_00It's a great exercise.
SPEAKER_01Ask yourself what your immediate reaction says about the operating system you're running. Are you demanding a clean drop-down menu answer in a messy world?
