Well, her electric bill had crept up over the past few months, so she wanted to know if he could just perform some basic maintenance to get the system running more efficiently.

It's a really vital distinction to draw. But the answer is no. See, inattentional blindness is a top-down failure of conscious attention.

Well, your brain's processing power is fully occupied counting those basketballs. So it drops the gorilla from your perception entirely.

SPEAKER_00

But habituation, which is what Dave encountered, is a bottom-up failure. And we can totally rule out the bill dodging theory.

Completely passed out. Because their nervous system has categorized a Boeing 747 as useless, non-threatening information. So the sensory neurons just start forwarding the message.

And it is a completely necessary evolutionary trade-off. I mean, think about it. If you noticed every single constant sound at full strength forever, you'd go crazy. You'd be utterly paralyzed. You'd feel the persistent smell of your own house, the feeling of the shirt resting on your shoulder, all of it constantly.

So the brain mutes the constant to free up bandwidth for the new. That makes total sense. Habituation is kind of a hero.

Right. Here is where it gets really interesting. Because that brilliant survival mechanism has a critical vulnerability. The failure mode of habituation happens on what we call the slow slope.

Yes. Because a failing air conditioner rarely breaks all at once.

Yeah, that blower wheel didn't start violently rattling at full volume on a random Tuesday. Dave explains that this rattle likely started as an imperceptible whisper like two summers ago.

Exactly. Or, you know, consider the family that over the course of three long Oklahoma summers just accepts that one bedroom at the end of the hall is just the hot room.

Yeah, they don't think their airflow is failing. The airflow got weak so gradually that weak simply became their new definition of normal.

And none of these people are foolish. They aren't in denial. Every single one of them has a perfectly healthy brain doing exactly what it was designed to do, muting the constant.

And recognizing that biological reality fundamentally changes how a professional has to handle a service call.

Yeah, I mean, it would be incredibly tempting for a technician to stand on that porch, point at the grinding metal, and just shame the customer.

Oh, totally. To ask with that judgmental tone, you know, how on earth did you not hear that?

But that is the wrong approach entirely.

It's disastrous. Yeah. From a psychological standpoint, shaming them is neurologically illiterate. You are mocking a person for having a fully functioning, perfectly healthy nervous system.

Right. And practically speaking, you are putting them on the defensive at the exact moment you need them to trust your diagnosis.

Exactly. If you make a customer feel stupid for missing the obvious, they are absolutely not going to trust your assessment of the invisible.
