I worked a neighborhood out in Edmond for most of the summer of 2024. It was a development built around 2008, sixty houses, mostly two-story, mostly young families. I had two regular customers on the block when the summer started. I left the summer with eleven.

What happened was a kind of slow cascade. The first family put in a smart thermostat in late April. They posted about it in the neighborhood Facebook group. The second family asked them about it and put one in two weeks later. The third family put one in and added a wifi-enabled mini-split in their bonus room. By June there were six smart-thermostat installs in the development and people had started talking about whole-house automation. By July there were eight, and three of those eight had added zoning systems or mini-splits. By August the conversation had shifted to heat pump conversions. Two families converted. A third was getting bids.

I want to talk about one particular customer in that wave.

He was an aerospace engineer, late forties, two kids. Smart guy, technical, made good money. He called me in late July. He said he wanted me to come out and quote a heat pump conversion to replace his current gas furnace and condenser.

I went out. I looked at his system. It was a five-year-old high-efficiency Trane gas furnace and a five-year-old condenser, both performing well, both under warranty for another five years. His gas bill, which he showed me, ran about ninety dollars a month in winter. His electric bill ran about a hundred and forty in summer. He had no comfort issues. The system was quiet. Sized correctly. Maintained.

I asked him why he wanted the conversion.

He said, almost everybody on the block is going heat pump. I want to be ready when the gas comes off.

I asked him what he meant by the gas coming off.

Core line: "It might make sense in 2030 when his current equipment was near end of life and the heat pump technology was further along and the gas pricing structure in Oklahoma was clearer."

Yeah, you fully expect to catch a cold from your neighbor. It's a physical transmission. It's uh it's measurable.

Right, it's measurable. But if you step into the world of human psychology and specifically homeownership, the idea of what is contagious becomes um incredibly weird.

Oh, totally. We shift from physical transmission to, well, social contagion, which operates under an entirely different and often invisible set of rules.

Aaron Powell Yeah, and for the learner out there who really wants to understand how our own brains betray us, we're looking at a completely different kind of infection today.

A very expensive infection.

Seriously. We're exploring this phenomenon where highly intelligent, deeply logical people suddenly start making entirely irrational decisions, like abandoning their own expertise just because they happen to live on a certain street.

Yeah, and our mission today is to figure out the mechanics behind why this happens and I mean, more importantly, how to spot it when it's happening to you.

Aaron Powell So to do this, we're synthesizing two very different types of sources. First, we have the recent real-world field notes of a man named Dave Hartzell.

Right. DAZE is a master technician with uh 45 years of experience in the HVAC trade heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. He's based out in Kingfisher, Oklahoma.

And we're cross-referencing Dave's practical observations with some foundational psychological studies from behavioral scientists, guys like um Salman Ash and Robert Cialdini.

Which is such a fascinating combo, the HVAC technician and the behavioral scientist.

So Dave documented this crazy case study from a neighborhood in Edmund, Oklahoma, during the summer of 2024. And the hook here, the mystery we're going to unravel, is how a seemingly innocent Facebook post about a $70 smart thermostat somehow mutated into a neighborhood-wide contagion of $15,000 home renovations.

Okay, let's unpack this. Because the timeline of this escalation is just wild. Where does it start?

So think about the absurdity of the timeline here. We are looking at a development in Edmund, built around 2008. It's got about 60 houses, mostly two-story, mostly filled with young families.

Pretty standard suburban setup.

Exactly. And when the summer of 2024 started, Dave had two regular customers on this entire block. But by the end of the summer, he had 11.

Wow, 11.

Yeah. The entire sequence was just a taskbook example of a slow social cascade. And it began in April with a single trivial action. One family installed a smart thermostat.

Right. They think the gadget is cool, so they snap a picture, posted in the neighborhood Facebook group.

Innocent enough, right?

Totally innocent. But then family number two sees the post, asks a few questions about the app features, and two weeks later, they install one too.

Contagion begins.

Right. The family number three puts one in, but they take it a step further. They add a wifey enabled mini split in their bonus room.

Which, for anyone unfamiliar, is a huge escalation. Oh, absolutely. A mini-split is a ductless heating and cooling system. It's fantastic for climate-controlling and isolated space, like a room above a garage that always gets too hot.

But it's not a thermostat.

No. Unlike a thermostat, which, you know, you can screw into the wall yourself in 10 minutes. A mini-split requires professional installation. You're running refrigerant lines, you're drilling through exterior walls. It's a multi-thousand dollar investment.

Aaron Powell So the snowball is officially rolling down the hill. By June, there are six smart thermostats in the development, and the neighborhood chat is buzzing about whole house automation.

Aaron Powell Yeah, and by July we're up to eight thermostats, and three of those houses have added comprehensive zoning systems, or those duckless mini-splits. Then August hits.

And the conversation just completely morphs, doesn't it?

It completely morphs. They were no longer discussing smart home gadgets or like fixing hot rooms. The chat had shifted entirely to full-blown heat pump conversions.

Tearing out existing systems.

SPEAKER_01

Exactly. Homeowners were discussing tearing out their existing central gas furnace systems and replacing them entirely with electric heat pumps. Two families had already pulled the trigger and converted. A third was actively collecting bids.

It's like watching a wave at a sports stadium, but instead of just standing up and cheering, people are casually dropping 15 grand.

That's a perfect way to put it. Which leads us to the main subject of Dave's case study. Aaron Powell Right.

So in late July, Dave gets a call from a homeowner on this block, late 40s, two kids. And here is the crucial detail. He is an aerospace engineer.

Right, a literal rocket scientist.

Literally. He does complex math for a living. He is highly technical, financially capable, undeniably smart. And he calls Dave out to quote, a full heat pump conversion to replace his current gas furnace and condenser.

So Dave goes out, he opens up the system to evaluate the job, and what does he find? A five-year-old high-efficiency train gas furnace and a matching five-year-old air conditioning condenser.

It was performing perfectly.

The engineer even showed Dave his utility bills just to give him a sense of the baseline. And because the equipment was so efficient, he was paying about $90 a month for gas in the depths of winter.

Which is nothing.

Right. And about $140 for electricity during the brutal Oklahoma summer. There were zero comfort issues. The system was quiet.

So Dave, looking at this perfectly engineered setup, naturally asks him, Why in the world do you want to rip this out and replace it?

And the engineer's response is just it's the linchpin of this entire scenario.

When the gas comes off. I mean, Dave tries to drill down into what that actually means, right?

Yeah, and the guy just vaguely references electrification in all electric homes. He essentially says, the neighbors are doing it, I should be doing it.

So Dave asks him, like, how many neighbors specifically have actually done this? And the engineer admits, two so far. Three, including the family getting bids.

Notice what is entirely missing from the engineer's rationale here. Dave systematically interrogates the baseline assumptions. He asks, Is your current system bothering you? No.

Is your gas bill bothering you? No.

Are certain rooms failing to heat properly?

No. Dave finally just asks him point blank, what are you actually worried about? And the guy thinks about it and says, I do not want to be the one who got left holding gas equipment when everybody else converted.

It's amazing.

SPEAKER_00

Wait, this guy is an aerospace engineer. He literally does complex math for a living. How does a guy who analyzes data all day completely ignore the flawless performance of his own equipment? Just because a few guys on his street bought a new toy.

It does sound like he's making a remarkably foolish choice for a remarkably smart man, but to understand this, we must completely decouple this behavior from the concept of intelligence or IQ. Yeah. What happened to this aerospace engineer is not a failure of cognitive ability. It's actually the activation of a deeply ingrained evolutionary mechanism.

Okay, now we're getting into the psychology.

Exactly. Dave's field notes specifically reference foundational behavioral research to explain this, pointing back to the 1950s. Solomon Ash conducted a series of famous line judgment experiments in 1955.

Oof, the Ash line experiments. I have seen footage of these, and they are incredibly uncomfortable to watch.

Because as would bring a subject into a room and ask them a completely trivial question, like look at this one reference line drawn on a board, and then look at three other lines. Which of the three lines matches the length of the reference line?

And the correct answer was always incredibly obvious. Anyone with functioning eyes could see it.

Right. But the catch was the environment. The subject wasn't alone. They were placed in a room with several other people, sometimes up to eight others.

And the subject didn't know that all of these other people were Confederates, actors secretly in on the experiment.

SPEAKER_00

So the experimenter would ask each person in the room to state their answer out loud. And the Confederates were instructed to confidently and unanimously give the completely wrong answer.

Before the actual subject even got to speak.

SPEAKER_00

Exactly. So imagine you are sitting there as subject number six. You can clearly see that line B is the matching line. It's indisputable.

But the first person says line A.

SPEAKER_00

Right. And you think, okay, they're crazy, but then the second person says line A. Then the third, fourth, and fifth person all confidently declare that line A is the match. By the time it is your turn, your entire reality is being challenged by the room.

And what Ash found was that a staggering percentage of subjects would actually conform and give the wrong answer, actively denying the physical evidence of their own eyes.

That's terrifying. It is.

Fast forward to 1984, and behavioral scientist Robert Shieldini systematized this exact pattern in his persuasion taxonomy, labeling it social proof.

Aaron Powell But I mean, why are our brains wired to deny our own eyes? It just seems like a terrible design flaw.

SPEAKER_01

It actually isn't. It's a highly adaptive heuristic for social mammals. We evolved in tribes, you know. Treating the crowd's behavior as a vital source of information kept us alive.

How so?

SPEAKER_01

Well, imagine you're foraging in a field, and suddenly the five people nearest to you drop their food and start sprinting toward the trees. You don't stop to analyze the environment.

Right. You don't look around to verify if there's a line, you just run.

SPEAKER_01

Exactly. The evolutionary heuristic dictates that when the people around you act in unison, they possess life-saving information that you lack. Usually the crowd is right.

Usually.

SPEAKER_01

Right. What's fascinating here is the vulnerability of that shortcut. The heuristic doesn't possess a filtering mechanism to distinguish between a situation where the crowd is reacting to new vital information like a lion, and a situation where the crowd is merely responding to itself.

Oh wow. Okay. So here's where it gets really interesting. But I have to ask, isn't this just FOMO? Though we've talked about pure missing out before, is he just jealous of his neighbors? I mean, my initial instinct is that this highly paid engineer just wants the shiny new gadgets his friends have.

It's a great question, but Dave makes a vital diagnostic distinction in his notes. This is not FOMO. It's not. No. FOMO is an emotional response, it is gap anxiety relative to specific individuals. Like you see your friend having an incredible time on a European vacation, and you feel a personal anxiety that you are missing out on that joy.

Okay, that makes sense. What about keeping up with the Joneses?

That's social comparison. That's about signaling your membership in a specific reference group like buying a luxury SUV to prove you belong to a certain socioeconomic class.

Okay, so if it's not jealousy and it's not status signaling, what is the engineer actually doing?

SPEAKER_01

He's falling victim to the bandwagon effect, also known as informational social influence. This is the act of treating crowd behavior as objective data.

Objective data. Yes.

SPEAKER_01

The engineer genuinely believed that the cascade of expensive installations on his street was mathematical proof. He saw his neighbors buying heat pumps and his brain processed that action as they must have researched the future of the Oklahoma energy grid. They must know something about impending gas regulations that I missed.

But he didn't realize that the very first install back in April wasn't based on some deep analysis of the energy sector. It was literally just a guy who liked hobby-level smart home gadgets.

Exactly. Family One installed a thermostat for fun. Family two installed one because Family One liked the app. By the time the contagion reached Family Eight and escalated to tearing out central heating systems, the original decision bases had completely evaporated.

So it had been replaced entirely by social proof.

Yes. Each new installation acted as a biological vote in favor of further installations. The votes were stacking up, but not a single person in that chain was actually re-evaluating if the technology was physically appropriate for their specific house or their specific climate.

The crowd was just responding to the crowd. Exactly. It's a completely closed feedback loop. And this aerospace engineer is caught in the gravity of it. What makes it so painful is that he had actually done an extensive comfort and cost analysis on his gas system back in 2019 when he originally bought it.

He had the data.

He did the math. But the social signal from the street was so deafening that he threw his own spreadsheet out the window. Yep. I mean, if I'm Dave Hartzall standing in this guy's basement, my instinct is to just pull up his $90 gas pill, point at the flawless furnace, and yell, look at this, you're throwing money away. Your neighbors are idiots.

Right. Which is tempting.

But I'm guessing a direct confrontation like that backfires when someone is caught in a social cascade.

Oh, it backfires spectacularly. Dave's 45 years of experience taught him that you never tell a customer their neighbors are wrong.

Never. Frontal opposition to a social signal puts the customer in an immediate defensive posture. If you attack the herd, the evolutionary instinct kicks in, the customer defends the herd, and the logical conversation terminates immediately.

So Dave then asked him to run his own utility analysis to project the absolute best case scenario for monthly savings, assuming the new highly efficient heat pump performed flawlessly.

Which means the payback period, the amount of time it would take just to break even on the initial investment, is 75 years.

And Dave politely points out that HVAC equipment does not last 75 years. It physically degrades long before then. It is mathematically impossible to recoup the cost.

Dave frames it brilliantly. He tells the engineer look, this conversion might make total sense in 2030. By then, your current system will actually be reaching the end of its life, heat pump technology will be more advanced, and the gas pricing structure will be clearer.

Makes total sense.

Right. But in 2024, with equipment that has five years of warranty left, the math does not work.

It's the perfect antidote. It's like breaking a fever with a cold hard spreadsheet. You let the math be the bad guy so you don't have to be.

Exactly. And faced with his own calculations, the spell shattered. The engineer sat looking at the 75-year payback period, and he just started to laugh at himself.

He realized what happened.

He did. He realized exactly what Ash's subjects realized after the experiment was explained to them. He had not been making a logical decision at all. He had been voting.

He was just casting a ballot to stay in the herd. So the fever breaks, he decides to wait, he keeps his perfectly good gas system.

And Dave continues to do his annual tune-ups.

Right. And everyone lives happily ever after. But there is an epilogue to Dave's field notes that validates this entire diagnostic approach. And honestly, it is a little chilling.

So fast forward to the following winter. January in Oklahoma brings severe single-digit cold snaps. The engineer calls Dave for a routine checkup and tells him what happened to the neighbors.

Yeah, the ones who blindly jumped on the heat pump bandwagon back in August.

Two of those families experienced severe system failures during that cold snap. Because they were buying what the group was buying, rather than analyzing the physical requirements of their own properties, they installed heat pumps that were entirely mismatched for the extremes of their local climate.

Let's quickly explain why that happens because it goes right back to understanding the mechanics of the things we buy. A traditional gas furnace creates heat by burning fuel. But a heat pump does not create heat. Right, it moves it. Exactly. It extracts ambient thermal energy from the outside air and pumps it inside your house. When it's 40 degrees outside, a heat pump is incredibly efficient because there's plenty of heat to extract.

But when an Oklahoma winter drops the external temperature to five degrees, there is virtually no ambient heat left in the air to extract. Right. The primary mechanism of the heat pump becomes useless. The system can't keep up with the thermostat settings, so it panics and falls back on its secondary system, which is auxiliary electric resistance strips.

Which is basically a giant framework of glowing hot wires inside the ductwork. It's literally like trying to heat a 3,000 square foot house with a giant toaster.

That's exactly what it is. And it's the most inefficient, expensive way to generate heat possible. One of the families had their system running those auxiliary electric strips constantly for over a week just to keep the house at 65 degrees.

Wow. So not only did they drop 15 grand to replace perfectly working systems, their winter electric bills absolutely skyrocketed into the stratosphere. Yeah. The social cascade pushed them into adopting a technology that simply did not fit their climate profile, all because they assumed the crowd had done the research.

If we connect this to the bigger picture, the primary lesson from Dave Hartzall's notes is a huge warning about how we process data. Dave writes, The contagion itself is the diagnostic. The neighbors are not necessarily wrong, but they are not necessarily right either. They are voting, and a vote is contagious.

So what does this all mean? It means that if you find yourself suddenly consumed by the desire for a major expensive change, whether it's a home renovation, a career shift, or a massive purchase, and your primary justification is that everyone in your social circle seems to be doing it, you have to hit the brakes.

You have to force yourself to sit down in an empty room and do the exact same math you would have done before the cascade started.

The math must drive the decision, entirely independent of the social environment, because the cascade only provides information about the psychological state of your social circle. It provides zero empirical information about the reality of your own house, your own finances, or your own specific needs.

It's just a humbling reminder that being smart, being technical, and doing complex math for a living doesn't make you immune to being a social mammal.

We all share that evolutionary hardwiring. When the tribe starts running, our deepest instinct is to drop everything and run with them.

We do. And this raises an important question for all of us to examine. We've seen the mechanics of a social cascade play out with thermostats and HVAC systems in a suburban neighborhood. But take a hard look at the rest of your life.

Look at the way you're managing your investment portfolio, the parenting trends you subscribe to, the structural changes you're pushing for in your career, or even the apps you feel compelled to keep on your phone. Where else in your life are you treating a social cascade as objective information? Are you making a calculated decision based on the reality of your own spreadsheet? Or are you just casting a very expensive vote to avoid being left behind?
