Smoking session review of the Maui Wowie cannabis strain released by Back Home Cannabis Company.

SPEAKER_00

Somebody who's 20 hours. You're tuning into Giglin's Highland. 420 Podcast. With your house.

SPEAKER_02

Welcome back to Giggle and Highland. You're here with the Skipper and the Professor. And today we are reviewing Maui Wowie, my Back Home Cannabis Company.

SPEAKER_01

Back Home Cannabis Company out of High Falls, New York, who, according to their website, doubles as a fresh food farm which utilizes organic growing methods with emphasis on soil health.

SPEAKER_02

As far as the Maui Wowie strain, it is an 80-20 sativa hybrid of Hawaiian and an unknown strain. The terps are Mersine Pinene cariophyline. Effects are energetic, uplifted, and happy. Flavors are tropical pineapple and citrus. Our friends at Leafly say that the THC content is 19%. All butt says 20 to 28%. And our friends at Back Home Cannabis Company say 28.76% THC.

SPEAKER_01

Three and a half grams or one eighth in a Ziploc Mylar bag, average price $25 to $35. This hole here comes from our good friends at Torches NYC in the financial district.

SPEAKER_02

That's right, 42nd between 5th and 6th. It's right around the corner from the big library with the lions on them. The lions. That's a good one.

SPEAKER_01

Ready for the roll? I think so. Let's do it. Let's do it. We're back with the rolls. How did it go, bro?

SPEAKER_02

Well, it broke pretty big when we were breaking it up. And because of that, the sample was definitely enough for your blunt, my joint, and at least one more. How did it look, Skip?

SPEAKER_01

Supple, small to medium-sized nugs, light and dark greens with auburn hairs, with a sweet, skunky undertone and an interesting dusting of gold tricomb. That sweet smell. Was it pineapple or citrus? It's kind of in the middle there. I was there trying to battle that up myself, and my nose couldn't be none the wiser yet.

SPEAKER_02

Another thing that was very interesting when we broke it up, when they were full buds, they were mostly greens, dark greens and light greens. But when it was broken up, it became this golden greenish color. Yeah. Very interesting.

SPEAKER_01

Very interesting.

SPEAKER_02

I think we're ready to smoke it.

SPEAKER_01

We're ready.

SPEAKER_02

Let's do it.

SPEAKER_01

Let's do it.

SPEAKER_02

So pull before lighting. And yes, it has a sweet taste. I can't, I want to say a little, I want to say pineapple, but it's not 100% certain. Yeah. But it's definitely sweet tasting. Hmm. All right, let's see what happens when we light it.

SPEAKER_01

And a little like diesely or chemical, like a little hint there.

SPEAKER_02

Now it says that one of the flavors is tropical. Is that the tropical thing? I don't know.

SPEAKER_01

Maybe that's a that's a broad way to paint that one.

SPEAKER_02

Tropical. That's a very broad brush, yeah. Tropical could mean a thousand different things. It could mean a hurricane, right? I don't know. Wow. I spoke too soon about being smooth, huh? So an ongoing conversation that we've been having as we've been doing our back home cannabis company uh reviews is what determines the name of a strain. And we've been doing a little bit of research, and we've come to the conclusion that there's really no regulation for the name of a strain. Anybody can name a strain pretty much anything they want. Right. Because the regulation doesn't look at the strains.

SPEAKER_03

Right.

SPEAKER_02

And what that means is that one company's Maui Wowie might not be another company's Maui Wowie. Right. Which is pretty weird. So we're starting to feel a little concerned here because then that actually means that there's no uniformity in strains between brands. Right. And then it brings to a larger question then what is really that strain?

SPEAKER_01

Because at this point, there is nothing to stop any cultivator, manufacturer, marketer to just put a name on something.

SPEAKER_02

Because they believe it makes you feel the same as the strain that previously existed with the same name.

SPEAKER_01

Without proof of parentage, lineage, or any connection to that.

SPEAKER_02

Right. So it can have completely different parentage, it can have completely different turp counts. And because the manufacturer felt that that was their version of it, they can name it. So it stays. And that is terrible because that means that this Maui Wowie and whatever other companies Maui Wowie you've tried are likely not the same strain.

SPEAKER_01

There should be some regulation in this. Well, yeah. I mean, just for accountability and uniformity, why not?

SPEAKER_02

They're saying that the reason there is no uniformity is because it's still a Schedule I drug in the federal level. That makes sense. It's a patchwork of different state regulations. Right. And what we really need is for the federal government to regulate it so that they can say, in the United States, Maui Wowie only can have this, this parentage, this, this terp, the, you know, and then regulate it. But until then, anybody can name any strain anything they want. And what a lot of people do now is put names on their own strain so that they can fight someone else that puts their that name on the strain.

SPEAKER_01

And it helps the marketing aspect. It makes it easier on them. It doesn't hold anyone accountable for what is this? You know, this is not what it's supposed to be.

SPEAKER_02

Right. Because let's be honest, if you know the strain, you're more likely to buy it than some strain with a strange name that you never heard of. You know, oh, wait, no, that's a well-known strain. That's a great strain. Yeah, everybody loves that strain.

SPEAKER_01

You're gonna get it. And it's not that difficult, really. I mean, off the top of my head, I can just think, why not name them on an acronym, on a portmanteau, anything that that kind of uh alludes to the lineage. Simple.

SPEAKER_02

So, what does that mean, our fellow mates? That means that if you're hearing this in New York City, you're hearing this in New York State, you're hearing this in Colorado, you're hearing this in California, you're hearing this wherever you're hearing this, we have to get together and demand uniformity in our cultivars. Because I want to know that I'm smoking Maui Wowie when I want to smoke Maui Wowie.

SPEAKER_01

And I'm sure I mean for those, even the casual ones that, you know, don't put that much foot in that fire, it'll bring a bit of gravitas, a bit of truth. Roughly.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it's getting rough. It's starting to change more into pineapple. Yeah. Are you getting that? I'm getting that some pine. But it's like a sweet, yeah. So it's like pineapple. Pine apple, right? I guess. Um, I'm already down to my first third. Starting to feel a little something. Spider senses are tingling, feeling a little numbness in my forehead and in my face. Um, so that's a good sign. Yeah. So what we're talking about brings to truth something that um an old cultivar told me a long time ago. And I when I mean by old cultivar, I mean before it was legal cultivar. And he said to me once, there is no pure strains now. Like all the strains that even the ones that they say the names that are old school strains, they're really not the original strain. It's usually either a ch a descendant of the strain that has the same characteristics or something completely different. Right. And the way he said it, he and I quote him on this, he said, the only way to get the real strain is to find it in the jungle. Right. Gotta look at where it originally grows and find it wild. That's the only way to get the pure 100% original strain. And it seems like if the naming conventions that we are talking about is true, that yeah, man, like that's a big part of it. All right. Well, this is a review, so we should probably get back to like how this feels, right? We're breaking off into tangents. How are you feeling so far, Skip?

SPEAKER_01

I'm feeling groovy, baby. This is nice. It's a nice sativa groove going here, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So the effects are energetic, uplifted, happy. Let's run them down. You feeling energetic, Skip?

SPEAKER_01

Not really, no.

SPEAKER_02

No, more or less, right? Uplifted? A little bit, a little bit, happy, sure. Yeah, but you know, I don't know why they put uplifted and happy because it's kind of euphoric, also falls into that spectrum of feelings. Happy, euphoric, uplifted is very similar. Right. But yeah, as far as flavors, we already said that it's kind of turning into a pineapple. It does have a sweet taste, it's not piney, right? Um, it's pineapple. Uh the tropical, I mean, we feel like that could be anything, so it's hard to say. I gotta say, Skip, I find that very concerning. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Of course, you know, and and you know, for a lot of us quote unquote purists and things of that nature, at least the the pursuit of it, because like uh Pro alluded to earlier, there is no pure land races anymore, if possible to find one. But, you know, Hope Springs Eternal and you can always hold out. But in the course, good fresh weed is always good.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, but it makes me want to like take a trip in the Amazon just to, you know, walk around in the jungle. Hopefully, you don't get hit with like blowguns or something.

SPEAKER_01

Why not?

SPEAKER_02

I mean look for some marijuana.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, why not?

SPEAKER_02

And you find some stuff, man. Find the originals or the Afghan or or in Afghanistan, or you know, like these places where marijuana originally came from, or where marijuana has grown for so long that you know it's part of the local flora. Yeah. So that is that is depressing. Now I wonder, you know, I I you know, I'm just thinking about strains off the top of my head, right? So, like that's the reason why you can smoke the same quote unquote strain and have different results from different brands.

SPEAKER_01

Right. It's their little mix, their potion.

SPEAKER_02

Another thing that I've noticed is that sometimes the same company will pull out the same strain, like more than once, and it'll have a different THC count. Right. Like, and it'll be dramatically different.

SPEAKER_03

Right.

SPEAKER_02

Um, I know I'm thinking of a company off the top of my head. They had an OG Kush and it had like 15% THC. And I'm thinking, what is it, a CBD thing, or or you know, maybe they made an error and now they're just trying to sell it as fast as they can. You know, they they uh cured it too early. They, you know. And then later they sent out the same strain, same exact name. No super, no, you know how sometimes they'll put super in the front or or one of those kind of adjectives in the front so that it's slightly different. No, no different adjective, the exact name. But this time the terps were, I mean, the THC was 30%. Oh wow.

SPEAKER_01

So maybe they they tweaked that second batch, you know, or got to where they wanted to get. Maybe the first time.

SPEAKER_02

Maybe they got it right the second time, right? Or did they change the the parentage or the the you know right the terps like who that they wanted to uh highlight? Yeah, that's a tough question. It's a tough one, man. But what are you gonna do? That's why we say that that this is like the wild west, man. And like it's in so many ways, and I'm not blaming anyone, it's just the nature of the beast. You know, there's so many at unanticipated questions, unanticipated things, you know, that people can't get a grasp of. And because of that, like things are very wild, like this. Yeah, you know, since the federal government can't put a hand in it, there's no real uniform regulation unless the states all decide, the states that are you know, marijuana yes states decide to get together and create some sort of regulatory block amongst themselves, right? It's not really gonna happen, you know? Um or we can do it, you know, like the consumer can create some type of you know, database or something, you know, and try to create the the the uniformity in regulation. But that would be very difficult for customers to do, you know.

SPEAKER_01

Well, the incentive financially is not there right now. The wild west suits a lot of people.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, yeah. Listen, with this wild west idea, I can name an inferior marijuana the name of a superior product. Right. And you, who has previously tried the superior product that costs much more to cultivate, much more, whatever, whatever, whatever. You go in that store and see the name of that superior product that you tried before, and you're like, holy crap, they got it. I'm buying it. You could even pay the same price as the superior product. And meanwhile, this product's inferior, they just put the name on it. Right. So that's what leads to varied experiences. So I'm into my half, definitely starting to get high. It's a very uh chatty high, I can see, because I'm yapping my butt off here. Um, what do you think, Skip? How you feeling? Nice. This is nice. Sativa, you know. So you're just feeling the classic sativa vibe. Yeah. And yeah, Skip is a bit of a sativa head, so if that's true, he's really happy right now.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, this is nice. It's different, it's different because not all sativas are the same. This one, you know, has you know the magnetism, but it's a bit more elastic.

SPEAKER_02

You can and it has like a smooth quality to it. You notice like that? Yeah, like um, I'm gonna say mellow, but not that it's um not strong, but mellow in the sense that it makes you kind of feel like, right?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, like and that usually kind of chill vibe. That they um that's uh a dominant mercine effect.

SPEAKER_02

That's like a chill vibe, right? Yeah, and it says mercine is number one. Now, to prove our point even further, when we're talking about these different brands and all this stuff, and I know, right? We're saying this while we're reviewing something. Sorry guys, but it's just you know just coming up. Um and we looked up the terps that, you know, we looked up through our regular guy, our friends in Albut, our friends in uh Leafly and other sites. And uh, you know, we just looked up to see what the terp uh profile should be, and most sites agreed that the terp profile should be uh Mersine, pinene, caryophyll. Now we looked up the COA on the Maui Wowie strain here, and its terps are Mersine Limonine. I'm sorry, Mersine caryophylline, limonine. So karyophylline is the second dominant. There's no pinene in this. Okay. So it even begs the question like, you know, so Leafly and All Bud and all these sites are saying what it's supposed to be, but it's not necessarily what you're getting.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, well, those things can be construed as a general database, and I don't know exactly how they acquire that data. But I'm sure, you know, it's it's updated over time. So they're just getting it as close as they can, you know.

SPEAKER_02

Hey, listen, we're not gonna knock our friends at Leafly or All Bud or some of the other sites we look at. We don't knock those guys at all. You know, hey, they're to us, they're awesome. They're doing us a service, just like we're trying to do for you today, right?

SPEAKER_01

So And also a great starting point, you know, as far as any kind of research and any particular strain that you favor, there's no better place to start. Yeah, it's fantastic.

SPEAKER_02

Thanks, guys. Thanks, Leafly, thanks all, bud. Thanks, all you websites that do those things that you do. If you want to shout out and you're one of those websites, hit us up, we'll shout you out too. Because that is very useful and very necessary. So, how are you feeling, bro? Well, I'm down to my last third. I'm definitely high. The chill factor is pretty cool. Uh, as far as physical effects, um, I it's not medicinal, so like I'm not numb body-wise, like no pain or nothing. I still feel like the weight of the day on my shoulders, you know, but I'm not, you know, hurting or like it's not heavy. The high is not heavy or anything. I just feel like regular day high. You know, it's a real sativa. It's like you said, it's a classic sativa. It's not affecting my body in any way except for my face. My face always gets numb when I'm high, right? So that's not really any different. Um, headwise, uh, I feel expansive. You know, I feel uplifted, uplifted fit is a good word for this. Uh as far as the energetic thing, um I don't feel more energetic than I was when I got here. But I don't feel less so either. So and then happy. I mean, I'm in a good mood, but you know, not more or less than normal. Uplifted to me is like the dominant one here. Uplifted and and relaxed. I would say more like a relaxed. How about you, Skip? What do you think?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, definitely. And you know, the name itself is one of those uh strains that uh that I talk about frequently that as you get through the dispensary experience you get to have your favorites and whatnot. Maui Wawi always stuck out to me because it's a sativa dominant, but most times that I've tried them, they have some good attributes, but not it not much in its totality. And this one here, although it's not as fruity as what a lot of them allude to, has more of a uh more concentrated high. You know, yeah. I can concur. It's a first. That's why I'm a bit, you know, trying to get my words together. But it is a first. That's why I keep looking at it. Like, really? Maui waowie? So you're actually impressed with this blend of Maui Wowie. Yeah, a little bit here because it's um it's it's it's harder and faster than than I'm used to.

SPEAKER_02

So yeah, like you're feeling it more than than you you have felt Maui-wise in the past. Wow. So that kind of proves our point, but in a positive way, right? Yeah. So this is something that he has tried in the past, didn't really like it. He likes this one. So I guess that could work good too.

SPEAKER_01

Usually it's it's known for it, it has usually a like a very uh complex bouquet. This one doesn't particularly have that, but it usually does, and it's usually very sweet smelling, very loud. Not danky at all, but this one is a bit of the converse of that. But the smoke is potent.

SPEAKER_02

Skip is feeling the Maui Wowie. Maybe we should add that feature at the end of our smack meter.

SPEAKER_01

Would you buy this again? That'll just leave space for another half hour. Would you buy this again? And you'll be like, Well, hmm, okay, let's break that down. I digress. Yeah, you're probably right, Skip.

SPEAKER_02

It's losing his sweetness towards the end.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I noticed that too there. It was like if someone turned off the flavor switch.

SPEAKER_02

Well, it still has that I can it like now it's like pineapple rind dish. You know, like so. This is the thing then. If you're not really working with the seeds that make that strain originally, right? So if you're making your own seed that you're naming this, then my question is this how do they grow? And what I mean by that is do you grow like do you start with a quote unquote plant, uh a base plant, and then start crossbreeding on your own to create the without a seed because they can they use cutting and and make clones truth truth but eventually you will have to make a seed right a plant will have to seed at one point so what how do they well my i guess my question is how do they determine do they just grow it and then say okay we grew this one right we we we hybridize this this uh this plant and this plant just to see what happens we put a little bit more to this plant and this plant okay this is what came out and so now you have this plant right and that's like in the bag that we just smoked right and now what do you do do you did you already have a naming convention in your mind like something was already there and you're just saying this is what I'm gonna call it and then grow it and then try to make something that you know is an approximation of what you think that is or is it that you know you just growing a plant that's a hybrid of these two plants you know plant x43 that doesn't even have a name because it was like you know something that you created in your lab and and K94 and it created this plant holy crap it smells like pineapples you get what I mean yeah and oh wow it tastes like pineapples that's kind of cool so what original branch smell and taste like pineapples well you got pineapple express and you got Maui Wowie and all right well let's give this one Maui Wowie because there's a lot out there that say pineapple express and chiching you you see what I mean which one is it or is it we're gonna try to create uh you know we know what the effects are for Maui Wowie and we're gonna try to create the closest thing in our lab to what we know Maui Wowie is supposed to be right which one is it yeah exactly because that goes a lot towards you know naming intentions right if if you're originally intending to create Maui Wowie and you create this plant that looks like Maui Wowie smells like waui smokes like Maui Wowie to me it's still not really ethical you know what I mean but it's more ethical than if you just grow a plant smells like pineapples ooh it tastes like pineapples let's call it Maui Wowie that's more unethical because you're not even you know like that's like a cynical approach right you know right I I could I even though I still don't think it's the best thing I can at least respect more that a person was had intentions towards that when they were creating this plan. Absolutely you know because at least that that to me that's like wow that's someone who who's knowledgeable about the product you know wanted to create with what they had the product right they were really shooting to make Maui Wowie not hey okay let's call it this well yeah from the marketing standpoint that is exactly what you described you know it's up to them I guess to uh to sell it so I mean who's to say that they'll be like okay this particular like you just described and name it as such I mean I'm sure they've done their studies they know what strains sell the fastest the most what have you marketing and again I'm just throwing that in there you know give it another perspective I have to say that sounds like something that needs to be expanded upon like I'm talking about like maybe writing absolutely and you know publicly an editorial assignment because I think most people most smokers they want believe that they're getting what they wanted like what they asked for. Right we can all be honest you know at least those of us who remember how it was before marijuana was legalized in New York like okay you took your chances then because you know he could say whatever he wants it to be too I understand that. But there was no regulation then like here there's supposed to be right I think I'm gonna have to research this because I want to see what they do in Europe. In places that predate us what what is the criteria?

SPEAKER_01

California is also a good um uh place to look Canada do you demand you know cult of our purity or fly however it flies they are accessible more than others maybe that's what we have to do maybe we just have to ask you know like go to the source and say hey so how do you name marijuana yeah and I'm sure a lot of the microgrowers and all types of growers that are tuning in can chime in we would really appreciate it if you did if we have any growers out there um let us know how the how do these strains get their names and is it regulated and by who we would love to hear that we're also trying to do our own research on the project on the you know on the question so are you feeding are you feeding but let's just start off like coming from I'm rolling into my just finish here and the high is nice it's the uh basically the classic sativa high very relaxed open you know a little creative perhaps nice high and uh let's see how it goes skip I never ever thought I would hear you say creative well yeah as an effect yeah I have experienced that many times I would definitely be remiss if I was to uh say no on that because yeah some uh strains lend themselves to that and perhaps how you're feeling at that particular moment.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah I'm gonna push back on that aren't I think that the creative aspect comes from the person and marijuana just enhances or you know help lets you zone into what you're doing. Oh absolutely and so so it gives you a more a better feeling you know you're more euphoric about it and in those aspects is very helpful. Oh definitely but I don't think it makes you creative well like I'm not gonna smoke marijuana and then you know and just decide to yeah write the great American novel or you know no and that in that that's a bit of an oversimplification.

SPEAKER_01

And you know I'm a writer and and at heart so you know to to you know it never maybe never never to minimize it to that I mean you know and in the English language that's what tends to happen because of the English language in itself. It's not a very uh expressive language in that way but definitely in any art it is you in the end.

SPEAKER_02

This is just you know because if that's true man geez I feel uh I feel cheated that I didn't you know I didn't smoke some of this weed and now I'm writing the whom for whom the bell tolls and stuff you know like come on no definitely not you know yeah whatever mood that you allow yourself to be caught in you can let yourself go see where that goes you know I've done it many a times in in my creative endeavors okay and many times with positive results you know all right I have been chastened because I personally think talent is talent and or you know hard work because a lot of times you get stuff done through hard work and not talent um but whatever it is we it just means that to me personally it just means that when you hide you like it to do it even more that's about it I'm having more fun doing it's like you know that's true that's the Jon Stewart effect in uh half baked right have you ever done this on weed yeah the experiential weed guy I just rolled into my just finished and as you can see it has me uh blabbing my head off and just uh you know yapping away and uh yeah it's a good feeling it's a good one I think it's good it's a good sativa so yeah I guess that's the happy part right when you start feeling like you want to act silly I think I hit happy I was already at uplifted the pineapple kind of went away in the end uh but it was pretty good for the most part and yeah I think that's it right Skip seems like it is all right we'll see you in an hour guys and we're back with Giggling Highland one hour later how does it go pro well I'm still kind of feeling pretty good uh you know uh still kind of there uh at least it it didn't taper off that much which I'm pretty impressed uh I'm not smacked but you know I zoned out a couple of times I was vibing with the music there and that part was nice. How about you skip?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah the that same nice feeling I described before uh went through the hour although it tapered almost at the end of the hour there and the uh strong after effects came in so that's where I am one hour later not much of a high now but definitely proof that there was a high interesting I I think I'm still I'm still a little there yeah yeah that's nice smack a meter time definitely let's do it let's do it definitely failing this this is alright this is actually alright and definitely failing this this is alright this is actually alright final thoughts in the smack a meter what do you think Skip well it was a nice ride there I mean the smoke was nice at uh sativa dominant which you know I favor at times and it gave that good all over warm vibe feeling you know open to anything it was a nice nice experience here tape it off into the hour but of course that's asking a lot nowadays and uh for that I'll give it a 7.2 okay well I really um enjoyed the experience uh let's give it the final rundown so when we opened the package a lot of uh there was like light greens dark greens golds had uh these pretty hairs on it small type buds but they were still very supple um you know it it smelled sweet out the package it was it pineapple was it citrus we really couldn't tell at the time you know it had a milky coating you know it was like the trichomes were showing and then the the really cool part before we uh rolled it was that when it broke up it was all green you know with hints of yellow but when we broke it up it was like gold with hints of green and that we thought that was really cool. Had enough after we uh rolled a little bit so that also worked very nicely uh the smoking experience was pretty cool uh we felt uplifted we said mostly uh at the end I started getting happy uh I didn't really get energetic and um it felt great i i thought it was a great high uh and for me it it pretty much lasted the hour um it maybe it tapered off a little bit but it was still going strong at the end of the hour and i i actually was impressed by that um i didn't get smacked so the high wasn't something that was like too nuts you know or too crazy and also to describe the high it seemed more like a solitary thing like i i felt more comfortable you know zoning out and and doing things on my own than i did you know being chatty or anything so i don't think this is a social one and okay so final rundown great high um maybe a solitary high better than that a lot of fun and not a smacker but definitely something that you can enjoy and for that I'm going to also give it a 7.2 and good mates that is our review if you have any comments concerns questions or simply want to drop us a lifeline visit our comment section or our YouTube page and don't forget hit that follow button and subscribe.
