Smoking session review of the Gumbo cannabis strain released by Platinum Reserve.
And we're back with Gigglin' Highland. Today we are reviewing Gumbo by Platinum Reserve.
SPEAKER_02Platinum Reserve, a subsidiary of HPI Can Inc. in Poughkeepsie, New York. Their founders are experts in the cannabis and in the hospitality industries. You can find it in New York and in Washington State, which means it's not necessarily MSO, but like a mini MSO. And they sell flour and pre-rolls. Their boxes come in three colors, denoting type indica sativa or hybrid.
SPEAKER_01The internet today couldn't make up his mind on information on this particular strain, so there's a lot of information up there. So bear with us while we get through this together. Gumbo, a possible 65-35 indica dominant cross of OG Kush, blueberry, and or undefined genetics with bubblegum flavors. Top effects are creative, euphoric, or giggly, depending on the source. Also sleepy and or relax. Top flavors, ammonia, pine, sage, and possibly bubblegum. Top terps are terpenaline, cariophyline, and osamine. THC values are as follows: 20% according to All Bud, 17 to 21% according to Google. Leafly says, I don't know what you're talking about, and a hefty 32% THC according to Platinum Reserve.
SPEAKER_02Which is funny because Leafly actually has an entry on Gumbo. It just doesn't have a THC count. Definitely. As far as this particular strain, it came to us today in a 3.5 ounce jar with a green box that usually retails anywhere between $35 and $50. This particular box we got today from Greenflower Wellness, this time in their location in New High Park, which is right on Hillside Avenue off Langdale Street. Make sure to pay them a visit, y'all. Definitely. Are we ready to roll this?
SPEAKER_01We're ready.
SPEAKER_02Let's do it. Glad to do it.
SPEAKER_01And we're back with the roll. How did it go, Skip? Well, it broke about even pro, and that's enough for the show. One blunt, one joint, and there was enough for possibly one or maybe two rounds.
SPEAKER_02Sounds good. As far as look, light greens, dark greens, golds, and orange hairs. Smallish to medium-sized buds, very fluffy and supple, they were. Powder coated with a golden dusting of tricondes. They had a decent turp profile. It kind of leaned more to the side that said ammonia, pine, and sage.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And this particular strain was packaged two months ago. Oh, very fresh. Let's find out how fresh. Get ready to smoke it? Oh, we're ready. Let's do it. Let's do it. The first impression I definitely get is pneumonia. Yeah, I'm like an ammonia citrus bomb thing going on. Which could be the sage thing, right? Ammonia pine sage.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it comes through strong that ammonia. Strong, yeah. And at first, when uh when we opened the buds uh pre-grinding, I got a like a strong, like what I thought was lemon kind of thing. But as we grinded it up, it turned more citrusy and the ammonia became more apparent. Yeah, prominent. Yeah, I agree.
SPEAKER_02All right, let's see what happens when we light it. Yeah. I got that ammonia sage kind of thing going on. Not even a lot of pine. Yep, that's exactly what I'm getting. I'm not getting anything else. So this is an interesting thing. According to Platinum Reserve, this came in a green box. Boxes that are green supposedly denote a sativa or sativa hybrid. However, when we looked up Gumbo, we found that it was an Indika or Indika dominant hybrid. Yeah, according to all the information.
SPEAKER_01That's the beginning of the confusion.
SPEAKER_02So we're a little confused because we looked it up, and Platinum Reserve says that the color of the boxes is green as uh sativa dominant. Right. So we don't know where we're wrong here. Uh, but something there's some confusion here.
SPEAKER_01Maybe their particular strain is not Indika dominant. And that's kind of funny because I mean, I'm not a weed expert per se, but the buds they look more sativa dominant than Indika. So maybe this is a sativa version of Gumbo. Yeah, and then you know, to add to the confusion, every other source besides platinum reserve is denoting this as an Indika dominant. Right.
SPEAKER_02So it's you know, it's a little confusing here. Um another thing, uh you know, leaf, like we said, we found it in Google 17 to 21 percent. Uh huge discrepancy because PR saying 32%, all but is saying 20%. So there's a huge discrepancy there. We're gonna find out which is which. Um green flower wellness. We have visited them before when uh we went to the one in uh on 73rd Avenue, if I recall correctly. If um that location is there, uh if I remember the Oakland Gardens. Oakland Gardens, that's right. And then they have now we are visiting their new Hyde Park, and somewhere down the road we will visit their third location in Ozone Park. And you know, we will report that to you too. But so far, those are friends of ours. Uh, they always welcome us with open arms, great service. You know, make sure to pay them a visit. Definitely. Uh, another thing that I wanted to talk about because I don't know much about it, so I'm going to assume you don't either. And that is the terps that are dominant in this strain, which they say are terpinoline, karyophylline, and osamine. Now, caryophylline we all know is a very common one. It's the one that gives you that pepper bite, pepper taste. Yeah. So caryophylline, we all know because if it makes you cough, it probably has a little caryophylline in it. The two that I wanted to talk about were terpeniline and osamine. Terpeniline is supposedly the most dominant terp in this strain.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_02And it is a highly fragrant monoterpine found in plants, including apples, nutmeg, tea tree, and of course cannabis. It's renowned for uplifting, energizing effects, and complex flavor profile. I swear this gotta be a sativa. Like look who we're listening to.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Um, so that's what they're saying. And look at the aroma pine and citrus with earthy and floral. You know, so that's terpenoline. Uh osamine, which is the third highest after caryophylline, um is another monoterpine, and it's found in cannabis, basil, mint, lavender, and mangoes. Okay. It has a sweet, citrusy, and woody aroma, uplifting effects, and anti-inflammatory, antifungal, and antiviral benefits. Okay, so the terps are in line. Brand new terps that we don't see every day.
SPEAKER_01And it's nice too. This smoke is uh, it has a lot of character.
SPEAKER_02I'm not a fan of the flavor, but then again, I'm not a fan usually of ammonia-flavored marijuana. Um, that's just one of those flavors that I'm not a fan of. Of course, if it's something that gets you really nice and high, I'm gonna just, you know, I'll deal with the flavor.
SPEAKER_01So so you're feeling a lot more of the ammonia on your side there.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's like that is the most prominent of all. Yeah, not so much.
SPEAKER_01In the beginning, yeah, but as we're getting, you know, the first third is swinging by. It's uh more citrusy. Uh, I want to say like a little maybe sourness, yeah. Like sour citrus on the blunt side. I'm not getting that citrus.
SPEAKER_02So I'm at my first third at this point. So it looks like it's time for our first effect check. Okay, so we got two different sets to look at. Let's see which one sounds more accurate. Sleepy skeptic. No, not yet. Relaxed. A little bit, a little relaxed, a little relaxed, hungry? No, no, and then the second one said giggly, euphoric, and sleepy. So we already said no to sleepy, euphoric, no, not giggly. Oh man, I wish I was, but I'm not. No. So it seems like the first one is a slightly more accurate, right? As far as flavors, any berry, pine, skunky, bubblegum, or sweet?
SPEAKER_01Uh like skunky a little bit, like that dankiness, yeah. It's part of that the citrus round thing going here. A little danky, but not not much of anything else. I'm not getting much of the ammonia and the pine anymore.
SPEAKER_02I the it's like it's not overpowering, right? But the most dominant flavor I'm getting is ammonia. I'm not getting pine, I'm getting something else, which I guess is the sage. Okay, but I'm not 100% sure. It's burning pretty fast. Yeah, wow, very fast. How's that high there?
SPEAKER_01You heard that. I was like, Yeah, you sound like what happened there.
SPEAKER_02Sounded like Scooby-Doo. Yeah, you got like um so far, I'm not feeling anything. Okay, you know, a little a little openness, but that's all I have so far. Just a little openness. So uh Platinum Reserve, of course, is a subsidiary of HPI Canna, um, which has other brands. Uh, the two that we know the most, Skip and I, is um a brand called 40 Tons, which we have seen in the dispos. I haven't personally tried it yet, have you, Skip?
SPEAKER_01One time. I uh it was uh like a promotional, and uh it was not a lot, really. Now that I'm seeing them in these huge bags, but it was uh I don't remember much, it was so long ago.
SPEAKER_02And then, of course, the one other claim to fame from HPI Canna, which is the most ubiquitous brand, is dank by definition. Oh, yeah. And uh if you are a New York cannabis buyer from any dispensary, you will see if if you go to three different dispensaries, you're gonna see Dank by definition at least once. Definitely. So, yeah, that's a New York brand brand. Um, and you know, they say that platinum reserve is supposed to be like an artisanal focus, yeah. That's what HPI Canna says. Um, I don't know how true that is, but it does seem to me at least, that it seems like uh they take a little more care in the appearance of the bud and little things uh say than what I've seen in dank.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's fair. That's fair. Yeah, it's a different thing going. Even the trim is different than dank.
SPEAKER_02Another thing I noticed was that um it's not about flavors. So it's not I don't the ones I've tried so far, there's no berry, there's no sweet, there's none of that. Right, okay. It's like marijuana.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you're right. You're right. Yeah, it's not fruity or anything. A lot of danks, you know, have fruity, sweet, bubblegum. Right, and not even artificial, you know. A lot of them are good and have you know a lot of those strong essences, none of that here.
SPEAKER_02Not the few that we've tried so far.
SPEAKER_01It's more earthy.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, they were more marijuana flavors, you know, earthy, skunky, ammonia, uh, piney, those kind of you know, flavors. Less of the berry, less of the sweet, less of the you know, candy. Wow, I'm rolling right along. I'm already halfway. Um, which means I'm ready for my second effect check. All right, I'm still not sleepy. No, yeah, relax is it's something in there. Hungry, no. No, giggly, no. Euphoric. I'm trying to see if that one's there. No, no, I don't feel it. And of course, we already said sleepy. Um, we also, right? I think you're with me with that so far, right, Skip? Yeah, I think uh we also said we lean more towards ammonia, pine, sage, as opposed to bubblegum, sweet, berry, whatever. Yeah, the only one we see that we think is okay from that side is skunky. Definitely, but both say pine, and I'm not getting pine out of this. Did you get any pine at all?
SPEAKER_01No. In the beginning, there was something could have been pine, it's just um more pepper than flavor.
SPEAKER_02So I I am leaning more towards it, looks like the leafly entry. Yeah, I think so. Leafly was the one that's uh sleepy, relax, hungry, ammonia, pine, sage. And it it's kind of going that direction. Not necessarily 100%, but kind of going that direction. As far as the high, I'm like trying to self-evaluate here for a second, and um yes, there's a slight fogginess. No body, I don't feel any body effects, nothing at all. Seems to be all cerebral, not even numbness in my face. Uh, it's just like a fogginess in my head right now. Are you feeling anything?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, fogginess and um like I don't know, slight, maybe like a dizzy thing going. Not not necessarily dizzy, but a little like I would notice I look around and it's like a little shakiness there.
SPEAKER_02Okay, that's not happening to me yet.
SPEAKER_01Too bad.
SPEAKER_02But yeah, there's a little fogginess. Uh it's like kind of uh like a piece of cotton growing inside my brain. That's kind of what it feels like. And uh, you know, not a bad feeling. No, not strong, right? It's not strong, but I'm on something. I can feel it. Yeah, there's something there. There's something there, but it's not strong. Yeah, and it has like a relaxed thing going, a very relaxed vibe. Do I see myself going out dancing with this? Probably not. No, but it's it's not strong enough to actually stop you from doing anything you want to. Okay, right. So, you know, it's not that it's gonna encourage you to do anything, but it's not gonna stop you either, right? It seems like at this point. I don't feel particularly chatty or social. I don't feel the openness that Skip talks about. Yeah, neither do I. No openness and no magnetism either. So, you know, it's like just just like a fogginess in the brain for me. Um, I could feel it from above my eyebrows, you know, but in the cranial cavity, like, and then in that area, you know, like it's just the fogginess. Like I said, like having a little cotton ball growing in there.
SPEAKER_01It is up top, yeah, even from the beginning. And it's staying there. It's just staying there. It's nice though.
SPEAKER_02You know, it gives you that that relax fly thing. It's not a thick smoke. My exhale is not like super strong, and I'm taking deep pulls, so it's the smoke because I should be like exhaling tons of smoke right now, and it's not happening. This is flying, man. It's just flying. Uh last effect check. Alright, sleepy. No, no. We already checked off relaxed, hungry. No, giggly. Euphoria. No, let's see. Me sleepy no relaxed, yeah. Uh hungry. No, giggly. I wish. Euphoric? No. I was looking for that one hard, but no, I wasn't there.
SPEAKER_01Um, how's it how does it taste in the end? It has the same citrus kind of thing going, but it's sour, it's sour citrus. Very interesting, full of character. Although the the smoke is thin, but still is is decent enough to uh to tolerate the session.
SPEAKER_02I would say it's okay for freshmen if the freshman is not particular about flavor. So, like if if the freshman is someone who's used to well, for like dank products, you know, with the cherries and gum and cookies and candies and stuff, they're not gonna like this because this is ammonia sage. So it's a very bitter taste, a bitter smell. And you know, it's you know, cat piss kind of pissy kind of things. So uh, you know, if and if if the freshman doesn't like those kind of flavors, this is probably not gonna be good for a freshman.
SPEAKER_03Hmm.
SPEAKER_01So I'm thinking then what was their thing? Because I get it, platinum reserve meaning it's supposed to be higher, you know. And the highs overall are different than dank because there I was thinking for a while, and I don't really want to take one away from the other as far as the high. To me, they're just different, you know. Although these taste and look more earthy, less party than dank, it tends to have a stronger vibe. I don't want to say high, I would say vibe, yeah, because it's more earthy, you know, but definitely they're both different, so I'm not taking one away from the other. Okay, yeah, you know, if you if you want the fruity stuff, dang got everything you need there. And if you're looking more for the roots type of character, and sometimes even vibe, because there's some that we've tried during the course of the week, and it's a totally different vibe than this one.
SPEAKER_02So yeah, this one has more of a down effect, where the others had a more uplifting effect. Yeah, this is strange. I'm like, do we have it wrong? Like the colors of the boxes, right? Are we wrong? Are we mistaken?
SPEAKER_01Well, even if we are, we're we're you know, is it's better to error in the side of giving you the audience at large the difference because although we're not getting them right, there is a difference. So when you say so.
SPEAKER_02You can confirm what we found on the internet and just ask when you're looking at their boxes. Oh, what color what does platinum reserve green box mean?
SPEAKER_01See if that works for you. I would say look up the strain and and you know, go with the feels, you know, because a lot of anywhere you go on the internet, let's leave all but they'll describe the top effects and they're generally on the Not always. I would disagree with that. Oh, yeah, sure.
SPEAKER_02I'm not hungry or sleepy right now. Well, exactly. But there is a relax factor. Yeah, okay. All right, so they're gonna find one thing. Exactly. Something in there. Okay, I'll I'll give you that skip. At the end, the the flavor profile hasn't changed at all for me. It's ammonia. Ammonia and sage, no pine. I didn't get pine throughout the entire experience. So platinum reserve. You know what it seems like to me? It's like, yeah, it's like the new age weed, the new age marijuana. Tastes great, not harsh smoke. If you're looking for that, you go with dank. If you're looking for, you know, if you're like an old school smoker and you don't like all this candy stuff and you want to go back to something that's old school and skunky and stuff, then you might want to find platinum reserve. Yeah. I to me, like that seems to be the difference.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's a that's a pretty up description. The only thing I would add is that in the description of it being a bit more old school and uh more earthy, not generally skunky, it's not offensive on that side, or like you know, it's it's you're not gonna from what we've found so far, right?
SPEAKER_02You're not gonna get the candy sweet taste. Oh, absolutely, you're not gonna get that here. It this is gonna be like the marijuana, pre-dispensary marijuana. That a lot of it was skunky and danky and didn't taste pretty. Right. This leans more towards that, yes, towards the you know, I guess that's what they're trying to say. Yeah, like with their artisanal bent, that they're kind of trying to go back to that, to the pre-dispensary stuff.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so as far as that, we can say that they are uh hitting that marks to make to distinct themselves away from Dank. Yeah, yeah, they want to be distinguished again.
SPEAKER_02Platinum reserve, one of the things that uh for us is a little bit of an issue. You know, we have a lot of marijuana in the studios here, and um you gotta label the bottles like inside the box. Because honestly, if you take out four or five of these and you leave put the boxes on the side, yeah, you will you will not know which is which. There's no indicator.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Uh and you know, the that that's uh, you know, I mean, I guess that's a little happy little accident if you got seven or eight jars and they all get mixed up, but either that or Keep a sharpie handy. Yeah, because you know, this is not gonna tell you the bottle itself, even though it's a beautiful bottle, it's all clear. You get to see the the weed all the way around, except for the cap. So, and I know that's why they did it like that. So you can hold it by the cap and like look around. You know, it's a nice little con uh psychological uh thing going in there. Oh, definitely, I agree. Yeah, they you know that was that's that uh you know that was somebody's uh communications degree coming to the fore in their their advertising forte. Because it it it makes you do that when you take it out of the box, you're holding it by a black cap, and then the entire thing is glass, clear glass. So you could like look at it, you know. Then that's a nice little yeah, but yeah, put put the sticker on the cap, okay? If you don't want to cover the pretty jar, put the sticker on the cap so we can remember which one it is. And then I know what you're gonna say, plan and reserve. All right, well, if you open all the caps, you can confuse it. But now if someone does that, they're just an idiot. So yeah.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01But let's just start off like coming from.
SPEAKER_02And I think uh we have just hit the boat. Yeah, and that means we are rolling in. I am rolling into my just finished segment. Uh I feel something, it's not very strong, right? Uh, but it's there. And it does not, it feels more like a sativa, yeah. It does than it does in Indika.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Which kind of makes me feel like that's why Platinum Reserve put it in a green box. They know something we don't know, right? And they're just naming it something that, you know, remember, as we've told you guys many times at this point, names are not sacrosanct. Like in we found out too much to our horror, that if you grow a strain and you sell it, you can name it anything you want.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, you can.
SPEAKER_02And that's why there's like 12 different strains of Jack Herrera, for example, because there was once an original Jack Herrera, and now there's a bunch of people saying, Well, I want to make an approximation of Jack Herrera, what it makes me feel like, and making other weeds, and then they're calling it Jack Herer. Yeah. And that's horrible. And that also could be the case here, right? So it can be a sativa with the name of an Indica.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Which I'm starting to suspect is what's happening here. Which means that a lot of the information as far as indiceness or whatever might not be accurate. But what will be accurate is how we feel. And yeah, that's pretty much where we can hit the nail right on the head, folks. So all that's left is to feel for the next hour and see what happens. Let's do it.
SPEAKER_01And we're back. How did it go, pro?
SPEAKER_02Well, I mean, it didn't change much since from when you last spoke with us. Um, yeah, just pretty mild. Went through it. The hour went pretty fast. I felt it a little more when I was in conversations with Skip. But yeah, very mild. Very mild. How about you? And the come down, yeah. Pretty much already done. At least I feel that way. I feel like a a little bit of the residual effect, right? You know, the the little cotton that was in the middle of my uh brain. If feel like a little bit, but that's it.
SPEAKER_01How about you, Skip? Yeah, one hour later. I don't feel the high as much, but the afterburn definitely. Uh it's not uh a bad thing, just a bit of a donner effect. You know, you get uh that uh change in the voice and things of that nature, but no hi. One hour later.
SPEAKER_02That sounds like we're ready for the smack a meter.
SPEAKER_01We're ready.
SPEAKER_02Man, this is monotone. Yeah, I think it's time for the smack meter. Let's do it.
SPEAKER_00Definitely feel like this. This is alright. This is actually alright, and definitely feel like this. This is alright, this is actually alright, definitely all right.
SPEAKER_01Alright, we're back with the smack a meter. Final thoughts, Skip. Well, this one was interesting. The smoke, of course, had a lot of character. It had uh different notes for both the different experiences, the the blunt and the joint. On my side here, on the blunt, it was more citrusy. At times it could be a bit ammonia, but it was more a sour citrus, so that didn't get in the way and added actually to the character of the smoke. And um it was very mellow. I dare say old school feel, but what I will say is that it was the same feeling, almost two-thirds in. It felt the same way. It started tape tapering off, one third left. Actually, like left a space though for something bigger. That I will say in the high, you know, it definitely did that. So I'll give it a six and a half, mostly for the taste and the character, which I enjoy, and the mellow kind of high.
SPEAKER_02All right, well, let's do the rundown. So you know, you know, medium nugs, very supple and fresh, right? Mixed greens with a shot of auburn pistols and white, whitish tricons, small, strong, danky kind of lemony kind of thing, right? Going on as far as uh notes, some citrusy kind of thing going on. That's what we got when we opened the package, and um, you know, we were kind of excited. It's like it reminded me of a strain that I liked a lot for a long time, and I don't find that strain nowadays. And so I think that that kind of got me a little excited in the beginning. I was thinking, wow, is this the strain but in a different name? And uh the other strain, what other what the other thing that made me think about the other strain was that it has terpenaline as the main uh terp.
unknownRight.
SPEAKER_02So I'm like, wow, maybe this is you know something similar. And uh, you know, it it had a it hit a lot of the same uh notes, you know, it was the flavor, the the the smooth smoke, but yeah, it it didn't do it for me. Like I didn't get to that level.
unknownRight.
SPEAKER_02First of all, I did get more of an ammonia. I didn't get the citrus. It was for me more ammonia pine sage-ish. Uh so I didn't get that part. Uh also I um it it just I don't know. I didn't I got a high out of it. There's no doubt about that. Right. But it was just like it went nowhere. It was like that little piece of cotton in the center of my brain, and that was pretty much it. Uh, like I said earlier, and uh and one hour later, you know, I felt it a little more when I was skip and I would start getting into conversations and I would try to like kind of lose track of it. I felt it a little more, but really, even then, it wasn't that much, right? And so for that, it did give me a high, which means it passes a certain criteria, and um, you know, it it whatever it gave me lasted for the most part for the hour. So I have to give it that, but not much else. And because of that, I'm gonna give it a 6.3. So it looks like this time you had a uh it might be for blunt smokers. It might be a better experience if you're a blunt smoker. Totally different experience.
