But regardless of whatever you call me, whatever you know me as, however, you ended up here, I'm grateful to have you here for episode 16 of the Big Dream Show. I'm your host, Jordan BDJ Taylor. The biggest, the biggest dreamer. The biggest dreamer in the game right now. And this is episode 16 of the Big Dream Show. That's episode 16, y'all. So let's kick it off. Let's talk about just some general shit, some general housekeeping. I want to give a shout out to everybody that pulled up over the weekend to the what we call it, the 1G invitational cookout. Me and the fellas threw a cookout. I brought one who was on one of these episodes in the background. I can't remember which one it was, but if you go through the archives, he he in there somewhere. Juan, the good brother, one of my one of my good friends, one of my good brothers in the world, and the rest of the team. We threw a cookout, restore the family. Over the weekend. It was very successful. Had a good time. Ate some good food. Still got some some leftovers. Probably should go by now though. But yeah, thank you to everybody that showed up. It's been an eventful summer so far. They got the motherfucking Yeah, the Jay-Z concert, and we'll get into more of that for sure. The World Cup is still going strong. We got the final on Sunday, so we'll see what that's hitting for. DreamCon happen. I wanna I wanna hear from somebody that was at DreamCon. And then you get your grades back, and they got like a B or a C, and I got like a Q. So yeah, nah. When I when I say I'm broke, I mean I'm broke. When I say I failed, I I failed. So it might be a little different for some of y'all, but how y'all know? How y'all feeling? And we are at 785, 785 downloads, so thank y'all. Next step, a thousand, and then the goal is a million, but then once I hit a million, it's uh the goal, the limit don't exist. Shout out to my girl Katie. The limit don't exist. I said 785 downloads on 16 episodes. I don't take well 15 episodes, I don't take that for granted. Whether you listen week in or week out, whether you want the folks that's like, yo, I ain't listening, I got a binge. I was about to say something about community, like building the community around the show and doing link ups and meetups and all that type of shit, but one thing at a time, while I am planning and thinking of how to actively engage y'all, actively lock in with y'all from a community-builder perspective. I would like to roll out a email list because I want to get I want to get sturdier on my substack game. I want to get back writing. Reading and writing more are definitely two of my goals by the end of the summer, just because they have a con they have a they have a substantial impact on the way you think, on the way you articulate, on the way you learn. So I want to get an email list going so I can send out like Substack posts, podcast episodes, random like I said, substack, random essays, playlists, all types of creative shit. So we're gonna build this community. I'm just trying to think of different ways. So if you got some ideas or or you feel inclined, feel free to reach out to me. And last, but certainly, certainly, certainly not least, do your research. Don't let anything that I say or any given subject matter be the end of your knowledge on that subject matter. I consider myself well read. I try to give try to give sources, I try to back shit up as best I can when I can, but at the same time, I don't know everything about everything. So if I say something or you hear something conceptually, factually, whatever it may be, in this episode that sparks something in you, don't be afraid to go on Wikipedia, don't be afraid to go on an educational journal, don't be afraid to go down the you can see a rabbit hole. Just don't be afraid to get lost. That's one of the things that I miss about like my teens and my 20s, early 20s more so. I would be I would be so down to just look up a subject and get lost like for hours, just looking up some obscure, random shit, but learn as much as I can about it, watching videos, reading excerpts from books, reading articles, watching interviews, all this type of shit. So I think that that intellectual curiosity will serve as well, not just as listeners of this podcast, but as citizens in the changing world that we are encountering. You gotta be intellectually curious, you gotta think critically, you gotta be able to take shit in and not just regurgitate it without adding the context to it without without really knowing about it. So, yeah, do your research. Alright, get it, got it. Good. As we move to the episode, I also want to give a shout-out to the late great Ida B. Wells. Today is her birthday. Ida B. Wells was a legend. Back to the research point. If you don't know about Ida B. Wells, she was she was real prominent in keeping record of black people, black men that were getting lynched. A journalist, freedom fighter, bad motherfucker for real. So shout out to Ida B. Wells. Do your research on on Miss Ida B on July 16th, which is her birthday. Yeah, let's get into it. Let's get into it. What we got? What we got on deck, what we got on the dock. Let's kick it over with Jay-Z. Let's start with Jay-Z. Cause that's maybe the biggest story right now. Let's talk about Jay-Z. So Jay-Z performed a sold-out three-day concert at Yankee Stadium. Here, I'm gonna give you a list of the people who have sold out Yankee Stadium. That's it. That's the list. That's the whole list in the history of in entering Yankee Stadium. That's a list of people who sold it out three times in a row. So this is some big shit. This is some big shit. Shout out to shout out to my mom. So me and my mom were actually because she wanted to she wanted to go to the concert. She's a huge Jay-Z fan. Like she might be a bigger Jay-Z fan than me. Like I have distinct memories of her getting the blueprint around September 11th. You know what I'm saying? Memories of her playing the black album, playing American Gangster, playing shit. Even back to uh Volume 1 and Volume 2. Like I have I have very clear memories of my mother rocking with Jay-Z. I remember back in the day my mom and my dad went to the Jay-Z and Mary J. Blige concert when they were on tour together. So me and her were up watching and like texting back and forth during the whole night three concert, the whole extra innings, the joint that started around midnight and then around three. So we were up, just like, yo, this set list is crazy. This show is crazy. This is this is something special. So it was cool, even if I wasn't there. It was cool to still have that memory of me and my mom sharing that. But bigger than that, yo, the motherfucker sold out three days at Yankee Stadium. That's monumental, man. That's monumental. I don't I try not to I try not to over exaggerate. I try not to be hyperbolic, but I rappers doing shit like that is different. And hip hop is still such a a new genre to where it's only what 50, 51, 52 years old. It's only like 52 years old versus other genres that about been around 100, 200. Shit, if you talk about Beethoven and them, classical music, 500, 600 years. It's crazy. It's crazy to see one of our own, speaking from a hip hop perspective, reach that status of a real deal legacy act. Not just not just I got a residency or I'm here, but nah, the way that the Beatles, the way the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, shit, Michael Jackson, motherfuckers like that can go and take over a whole stadium. That's major. Yeah, man. That's major. I know that some controversy was invited due to Jay-Z's freestyle where he he has some bars for Colin Kaepernick. And he has some bars, he has some bars for the people. I'm not sure where you're standing at. That's another thing I would love to hear in a voicemail topic or hearing y'all sound off on of was Jay-Z wrong for quote-unquote dissing the common man? Was he wrong for saying, well, yeah, y'all niggas talking about me being in Target? But y'all still go on Amazon, still going to Walmart. Kapnick took that deal, so on and so forth. I don't know. I feel like I'm to be honest with y'all, and I don't want this to sound like copping out, but I feel like I'm not as well versed on how the Jay-Z and Rock Nation I mean the Rock Nation and Kyler Colin Kaepernick fuck already. How the Jay-Z and Kylie Kaepernick relation what relationship was established and then dissolved. I do remember a brief timeline. I remember Kaepernick trying to get the trying to get a getting a workout or getting like getting like workouts. I think they were arranged by Rock Nation. I remember Jay-Z coming into the conversation and then leaving out of the conversation as the provider of Super Bowl shows for the NFL. I remember that part of it. Kaepernick still ain't got no job. But Kaepernick is also paying for the for the funeral of the young man who was just found deceased, the the good brother Nolan. So yeah, it's tricky. It's tricky. Jay-Z's perspective at the same time, though, is it's always been different than mine or different than the than a common man. I think we have a lot of conversations about Jay-Z's brand of capitalism and how he masquerades the capitalism as some, you know, some American Horatio Alger, pull yourself up by your bootstraps, meritocracy type shit. Like if I can do it, you can do it too. When in reality, it's like I I don't know. I don't know how real how realistic that is for the average man. And this is where it kind of dives into the art versus artist conversation that we we share and reserve for our favorite scumbags. And not necessarily say Jay-Z is a scumbag, but at the same time, if you get a billion dollars, I don't know, I don't know no ethical billionaires. Maybe LeBron, but I don't know. So, yeah, that's a difficult conversation, but a whole space to have both the conversation around what politics make sense and what politics are gonna bring us forward, how we need to be moving, as well as it's just a fucking dope accomplishment. Like so yeah, man. Jay-Z Jay-Z did that. He did that. Also, I made the point a few weeks back. I was talking about when Ray J got knocked the fuck out by a super high fire. I was talking about one of one of the phrases I one of the phrases I find myself visiting often is I love when legends act like legends, and Jay-Z did some legendary shit versus Dame Dash. No dispatch to Dame Dash. Maybe a little shady Dame Dash, but when you a legend, I feel like it's a way that you you carry yourself when you know that your work procedure, when you know that your status is secure, when you know you did whatever you need to do and your impact is indelible in whatever field or whatever thing. Shit, you can be a legend, bro. Also, I think it's I think it's kinda I think that our minds are kind of fucked up as believing that the only way to be a legend is to be rich and or famous. Like you can be a lot of a lot of shit that I praise, and a lot of the people that I honor, outside of athletes and entertainers, of course, and within athletes and entertainers, a lot of the time, it's your moral character, you know what I mean? I I don't think because a motherfucker's a billion dollars that makes them a better or more legendary person than the grandfather who when him and his wife his wife was a homemaker, he was the one going out to the factory working twelve hour shifts, making sure that they four, five, six, seven, eight kids all got fed, all stayed out of jail, all made some of themselves. I I don't think that there is a different weight to that. I think there are more eyes on it. I think that it's more rare. It's rarer to sell out of stadium than it is to be a good father or a good mother or a good person. But I don't think that if I'm weighing legend versus legend, that that tips the scale. But yeah, people be legends. People be legends. Especially my peoples. Let me go into a r a list real quick because I can't talk about legends being legends and doing legendary shit without going through a brief list of legends who tarnish their legacy. So strap and fuck already I'm already I already can't talk. We what? 20 minutes in I'm already stuttering turning the porky pig. I need like a little sound effect like me. Like whenever I start stuttering this shit. It's cause these thoughts in my head they they be coming fast and furious. Whoa. But when I'm trying to articulate them and I'm trying to speak them and I'm trying to make them a tangible product because I'm recording the show I gotta kinda slow them down. Like it's a million thoughts in my head. I'm already on the next subject but it's a million thoughts in my head so I gotta try to stay grounded and articulate these ideas and these thoughts in a way that makes sense because it's the show is for the listeners. You know what I mean? It's not it's not for me. It's for me to create it's for me to do the art for me to do the work but it's going out into the world to to you all but real quick real brief list of legends who tarnish their legacy because I can't talk about legends being legends and not get a little not get a little shade in because you might be wondering well BDJ if Jay Z is a legend acting like a legend who are some legends who aren't who aren't living up to that status? Don't worry I got you. Number one on the list in no particular order we got OJ Simpson OJ Simpson should be known as one of the what top five at worst top ten greatest running backs in NFL history. He should be the greatest maybe top five greatest player in Buffalo Bills history. I know they're going to give it to Josh Allen because I don't I don't know why they love the glaze josh allen so much. Well I know why they they love the glaze josh allen so much he's a he's a big white boy that's built like Cam Newton so and he got it he got that canon. I'm not gonna lie Josh Allen can throw that bit 70 yards but whatever we'll get into that conversation close to the football season. But OJ Sepson turned us his legacy because he may or may not have he did that shit like we don't we don't gotta pretend no more bro it's 2026 like he did that shit he killed his ex-wife and killed her friend brutally violently and then started acting like a coon after he was acquitted of the murder that started started wilding out that's a motherfucker OJ Simpson that's a motherfucker that would have prospered in the streaming era that's one that if live strings and shit was popping when he was the man after he went from being I'm not black I'm OJ to just being OJ the juice whatever the fuck they started calling him he would have been on strings wilding so OJ Simpson you try to legacy R. Kelly kind of goes without saying I do always have to note though that R. Kelly is one of the greatest success stories in American history you talk about somebody that can't read somebody that can't write that created some of the most beautiful songs of all time that had a massively successful career he just couldn't not be a freak he couldn't not be a sick fuck and fuck with them kids fuck with them fuck with them girls so yeah legacy tarnished you hate to see it we got Bill Cosby on the list of legends who tarnish their legacy old respectability politics himself Bill Cosby Bill Cosby Bill Cosby Bill Cosby pisses me off because I literally remember him saying that shit like oh if if niggas don't want to sorry he didn't say niggas if young black men don't want to have bad interactions with the police or if they don't want to be perceived in a certain way they should pull their pants up. They should stop using that slang in that job like motherfucker you can't you can't take a more high ground when you're literally raping women like come on cut the bullshit cut the bullshit but yeah again somebody to target their legacy because he should be known for the Cosby show he has a documentary that's really good on YouTube. You can just type in Bill Cosby documentary it's not a self-documentary but it's about the education of black children. I can't think of what it's called off the top of my head let me see if I can look it up and try to fill space on the show while I look it up Bill Cosby documentary about black people. So again it's not the documentary about Bill Cosby being a a scoundrel it's called here we go it's called Black History Lost Stolen or Strayed is from 1968 narrated by Bill Cosby and examined how black people were portrayed in American history and film so that is available on YouTube for free. Before we even get to the old Cosby show legacy Bill Cosby was a a stand-up comedian one of the best one of the best standup comedians of all time powerful found you're also talking about someone who was in movies with Sidney Portier like a couple bangers over there. You're talking about someone who was the Jell O man was the Cosby show Cosby Little Bill so on and so forth one of the most prolific black entertainers who ever lived but again you fucked your legacy them Cosby show reruns they don't even really hit in the same way because now we know that she was a you was a you was a freak you was a freak monster. RP the Malcolm Jamal Warner a real legend real legend in the game another legend who tarnished their legacy while we're talking about tarnished legacies. Give me Sean Diddy Combs give me Puff Daddy I don't know I don't know how I don't know how long we can say his legacy has been being tarnished because he kind of been wildin' for decades it's coming out and also there was some there were some feelings and emotions. I know me personally I stopped fucking with Diddy and of course I wasn't of age when this came out but whenever I was of like age to understand what I was watching and I watched the big papa video and this motherfucker Puff Daddy was in a hot tub in the middle of the club talking about we could be friends and do this every weekend. That's when I knew that he was a bad person because it's not even your song that's not even your moment and you still in the glory and why are you in a hot tub in the middle of the club this nigga B got on a fucking Kango hat and a leather jacket and I think he had on a turtleneck and you in a hot tub in the middle of the club you're a bad person. Just off you're you're a diabolical person. I can't even say you're bad off that but you're diabolical you'll make decisions that other people won't make yeah so so puff puffy is a bad person. Puffy Puffy tarts his legacy gave us a lot of slaps a lot of bangers but also a lot of his artists died went broke went crazy converted to church out of the mace ah he he should be realistically and honestly and truly he should be looked at with the with the greatest producers of all time and not to say that he isn't but it's not gonna be that conversation when he gets brought up and last but not least in terms of legends being legends people that really tarnish their legacy to me Ben Carson Ben Carson Ben Ben Ben Ben Ben Ben Ben And you're from the Baltimore area Baltimore City Baltimore County I don't know how far into Maryland it goes but at Elementary school we had to read the Ben Carson book we had to read Ben Carson gifted hands and he seemed cool I'm not gonna lie he's saying cool like oh bro what a black neurosurgeon his name Ben Carson got a cool name he was on the cover with the scrub smiling shit like oh yeah that's lit at Johns Hopkins so we right round the way like I've been to Johns Hopkins I've gotten surgeries done at Johns Hopkins so it's like oh that's cool that's a that's a cool guy somebody taking a different path clearly smart but then you linked up with Trump he linked up with Trump linked up with the administration and it it just ain't been the same it just ain't been the same man so Dr. Ben Carson a turn his legacy for sore and you even got a biopic. You got a biopic. Ironically I think Cuba Gunn Jr played him and OJ Simpson and a biopic it would be funny if like he played R. Kelly and Bill Cosby and Freepics if he just ran that we'll call it the scun the scumbag gauntlet so yeah those guys that tarnished their legacy we'll see if the list grows if y'all got people that y'all feel like had their legacies tarnished I would like to hear it or tarnish their own legacies I'm sorry I would like to hear it because I'm a big fan of legends being legends but when legends don't act like legends when they when they act like clowns or they act like criminals it's always a tough thing to swallow. So the the mystery of a new future album is always interesting because you never know if you're gonna get RB chart type of future if you're gonna get like new street future if you're gonna get like old school dirty sprite voice modulated future but this album it seemed like it in my opinion it seemed like it didn't know where it wanted to go and just felt it felt like a collection of songs more than it felt like an album and I found myself a lot of times when listening to this this album thinking this song would be cool if somebody else sung it or if somebody else rapped it or this song is alright but it needs some features. It needs something to to break it up and that's not typically a complaint I have for features so just to just to yeah man just to I'm gonna run through a couple of notable tracks but I was I was listening to it and it just felt like it feels like a lot just features whole image change too because you talk about someone and I guess that's the theme of the shit is the real me so he's like oh I'ma cut my hair and I'm not gonna wear sunglasses and I'm gonna be on album covered with no shirt and I understand what you're going for. But what you notice from that headline, Baltimore, boom, beatdown, pummeling, like this is charged language. Beatdown and Pummel are are charged language, they're they're languages that are are used to excite and a reaction out of you. And they made sure to let you know it was an elderly man. So Baltimore beatdown, which not like a fucking pay-per-view title for a wrestling show or a UFC show. So they already let you know this is some Baltimore shit. So they're they're placing the onus not just on the individual action, but on the city. Video shows group of teens, teens, pommeling elderly men. So we got the demonization of the teens, because they're black, they're black kids with hoods on. I don't even know if they're hoods, how do you even know they're teens? But that's cool. Pummeling an elderly man. So they want you to feel sympathy for the elderly man. And I'm not saying that you shouldn't feel sympathy for elderly men, I'm not saying at all. Now, if you have any kind of empathy in your heart and in your bones, you're gonna feel empathetic about a 74 74-year-old man getting attacked regardless of the circumstances. But it's the way that language is used to manipulate the way we think that show the difference between these two things. So, shit like this is why I'm really looking forward to finishing out this media literacy curriculum that I'm working on, bringing it to y'all in an audio form of what to look for when you're assessing sources, what to look for when you're assessing headlines, what's how different media companies are in the pockets of larger corporations or larger billionaires, we'll just call it what it is, how billionaires own media companies and use them as mouthpieces for the things they want advanced. How it harms us as the regular everyday citizen just trying to consume the news when we don't realize we're getting, we don't realize the slants and the bias that we're getting. Also, just don't want to be lost on folks that one of the things that Donald Trump and RK Jr. did in this current administration was getting rid of the specific people that tracked this specific parasite to ensure that it didn't end up in our food supply.
