Fueled by a powerful AI boom and resilient consumer demand, major corporations including TSMC, UnitedHealth, and United Airlines reported blockbuster earnings and announced significant investments. This corporate strength is contrasted by rising geopolitical risks, as escalating conflict between the U.S. and Iran threatens global oil supplies, while the U.S. administration kicks off a new global tariff regime. Amid this complex environment, major consolidation is underway with Uber acquiring Delivery Hero and Eli Lilly buying AtaiBeckley, while economic data shows a resilient but cautious U.S. consumer navigating these crosscurrents.

From Phinextra Pro in Tampa, it's Thursday, July 16, and I'm Rachel Anderson with the Daily Rap. Oil prices keep climbing after Iran reportedly asked Yemen's Houthi movement to stand ready to close the Red Sea oil route. This comes as the U.S. strikes Iranian coastal defenses and reimposes a naval blockade, leading Tehran to declare an existential war. The potential closure of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a gateway for over 7 million barrels of oil per day, poses a potent new threat to the global economy. Brent crude is trading near $86 a barrel, with analysts warning that prices could climb back towards $100 if disruptions persist. Taiwan Semiconductor, or TSMC, the world's leading producer of advanced AI chips, announced it will invest another $100 billion in its Arizona facilities. The news came as the company reported a stunning 77% jump in second quarter profit, blowing past forecasts. Citing an extremely high conviction in the multi-year AI megatrend, TSMC also raised its capital spending and full-year revenue forecasts, signaling that the AI gold rush is far from over. Shares of United Health Group are soaring after the healthcare giant lifted its full-year profit forecast. The company cited tighter cost controls and a strong performance from its Optim Health Services unit, reassuring investors of its turnaround progress. In the airline sector, United Airlines raised its annual profit outlook, saying strong travel demand and higher fares are blunting the impact of volatile fuel prices. While the recent spike in oil costs will be a headwind, the carrier expects to recover the majority of those higher expenses through the rest of the year. Pharmaceutical company Merck received a landmark FDA approval for Lipfendra, the first ever oral pill to dramatically lower bad cholesterol. The drug is seen as a potential multi-billion dollar product that could help Merck replace revenue from its cancer drug Ketruda when it goes off patent. And in the MA space, Eli Lilly is acquiring psychedelic drugmaker Atai Beckley in a deal valued at $2.8 billion, sending Atai Beckley's stock soaring over 30%. We're also seeing a massive shakeup in the food delivery space. Uber has agreed to buy Germany's delivery hero in a deal valued at nearly $15 billion. The move will create the largest food delivery group outside of China, spanning 99 countries, as Uber looks to stave off intensifying competition. Investor focus this evening will be on Netflix, which reports earnings after the close. The stock has fallen over 20% this year amid concerns over slowing growth and rising competition, making today's report a critical test for the streaming giant. We got some fresh economic data today showing the labor market remains stable, with jobless claims falling to their lowest level since May, and retail sales rose modestly in June, as a drop in gas prices gave consumers more room for discretionary spending. We also got a major policy shift. The White House has officially announced 25% tariffs on Brazil, a move seen as the kickoff for a renewed global tariff rollout. A follow-up action covering the EU, Canada, China, and dozens of other nations is expected within weeks, setting the stage for a new era of global trade tensions. U.S. Treasury yields are on the rise, as the conflict in the Middle East is building back up. The 10-year is at 4.58%, the two-year yield is at 4.17%, and the 30-year bond yield is at 5.11%. And now let's check the scoreboard. Wall Street indices are seeing a split today, with a slew of earnings, economic data, and new developments in Iran to be digested. Midday, the SP was down over a tenth of a percent, the Dow was up around a quarter of a percent, and the Nasdaq was down about three tenths of a percent. That's all for your daily wrap today.
