What if the reason your faith feels small is because you’ve kept it in well-lit rooms? Today’s Field Notes devotional lands on a vivid challenge: a flashlight only matters when you carry it into the dark. We’re not talking about chasing drama or trying to “fix” everyone. We’re talking about the kind of Christian discipleship that follows Jesus into the places other people avoid.

We start in Matthew 4, where Jesus intentionally moves toward the outcast, the sick, and the people society leaves at the gate. Then we turn to Acts 3 and watch Peter and John face a paralyzed beggar asking for money. Peter’s line is unforgettable: “Silver and gold I do not have,” but what he does have he gives freely, the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth and a call to rise and walk. That moment confronts our assumptions about what help looks like, what the church is for, and why spiritual power can’t be replaced by comfort or distance.

From there, we take an honest look at the modern church impulse to seek safety: comfortable buildings, familiar circles, and messages aimed at people who already agree. Ephesians 6 reminds us we’re in a war against spiritual darkness, which raises a blunt question: what good is light if it never leaves the bright room? We close with a practical action step for your workplace, neighborhood, or home, identifying one place of deep brokenness and spending three focused minutes in prayer for courage and obedience.

Welcome to Field Notes

Good morning. Happy Thursday. Welcome back to Field Notes, our five-day devotional, where we can dive deeper every single day into our discipleship based on this past week's sermon.

Flashlights in the Dark

SPEAKER_00

And today we are looking at flashlights in the dark.

Jesus Seeks the Outcast

SPEAKER_00

See, we have to understand what Matthew 4 shows us is that Jesus intentionally went to the outcast. He intentionally went to the people bound in chains. See, in his day, if you were lame or sick, society had no safety net for you. There wasn't a Medicare, Medicaid, socialist government ran anything. You were carried to the city gates and you were laid there to beg for scraps. Those are the exact people Jesus sought out.

Acts 3 and Courageous Faith

SPEAKER_00

In Acts 3, we see Peter and John, and they encounter a paralyzed beggar asking for money. Now Peter doesn't offer a social program. He doesn't go, hey, there's this place you can go, there's a form you can fill out. In fact, Peter says this silver and gold I do not have. Dude, they're missionaries, they ain't got it like that. But what I do have, I give to you in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Rise, pick up your bed, and walk.

Light Only Matters in Darkness

The modern church, however, we often seek safety. We gather in comfortable buildings surrounded by people who believe exactly what we believe, and we preach to people who are already free. We preach to people who already know Jesus. We preach to people who are not going to argue back. We preach to people who have already been set free. Ephesians 6 reminds us that we are in a war against spiritual darkness. And let me ask you, what good is light if it is only ever turned on inside a brightly lit room? You don't need a light unless you're stepping into the darkness. And too many times we want to play safe and we want to just be in the light. We want to be in areas full of people who already agree with the same things that we already say. And what good are we to the darkness? How are we pushing back into the darkness if that is truly where we want to

Action Step for Thursday

SPEAKER_00

be? Our challenge today is this is incredibly messy to step into the lives of people who are bound by sin and in chains, who are bound by trauma, who are bound by addiction. It's hard work to walk with them through these things. It takes courage to leave the safety of our routines, to get out into the darkness. So today, whether you are leading a classroom, managing a staff, or just talking with friends and neighbors, there are people all around you who are living in captivity. Are you avoiding the messiness of people because it's easier to stay in the light? See, true church growth and true kingdom impact happens when the down and bound people are introduced to the freedom of Christ. Our action step today is this: take a hard look at your daily environment, your workplace, your neighborhood, your house, where is the deepest darkness? Write down one specific environment or situation that makes you uncomfortable because of its brokenness and spend three minutes today praying specifically for the people in that situation, asking the Holy Spirit to give you the courage to step into that mess and be a flashlight in the dark. I hope you have a great rest of your Thursday. We can't wait to see you tomorrow morning.
