The Upside-Down Kingdom

The Beatitude That Makes Us Squirm

So today we're going to kick it off with the upside down kingdom. And our scripture focus for the day is going to be Matthew 5, verse 10. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. It's easy for us when we read the Beatitudes to just silently kind of like nod along and go, yeah, this sounds good. I mean, Jesus is literally sitting here going, hey, blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the peacemakers. Blessed are the pure in heart. Blessed are all of these. But then we get to this one. Yes, blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake. This is where Jesus really sums up all of the beatitudes, and he he gives this guarantee that should make most of us uncomfortable. If we are actually living out all of the other beatitudes, if we are actually like doing and living the life that we are called to live, persecution isn't just a possibility, it's a promise.

Two Kingdoms At War

It's gonna happen. And we looked at this in depth by going, there are two competing kingdoms that live at the same time around us that that cannot coexist, that are actively at war. We have the kingdom of heaven and we have the kingdom of this world. This is the dichotomy we see throughout scripture from Genesis 3 all the way through Revelation. We see these two kingdoms that are at war and at odds with each

Power Flipped From Bottom Up

other. For example, the world kingdom operates from the top down. We looked at in construction, starting out as a laborer, and always trying to gain power by moving up. So from a laborer to an operator, from an operator to a foreman, from a foreman to a project manager, project manager to an estimator or an office worker or a business owner. And we always went the more high up on the ladder we go, the more power we can get. Jesus, however, comes along and he flips this and he goes, No, no, no, no, no, no. It's not the higher up you go that you gain power, it's actually the lower you go. See, the kingdom of heaven is this upside down kingdom where Jesus is really going, hey, you guys missed the mark on this. Because, see, Jesus, the king of the universe, grabbed a towel and washed the filthy feet of his disciples because Jesus knew true power doesn't come from the top down, but rather from the bottom up. When we live out this upside-down reality, when we put others first, when we serve without recognition, when we refuse to play the world's power game, we make ourselves an enemy of the world. And the world does not tolerate its enemies, it pursues them, it persecutes them. The world sits here and goes, Nope, we already have this system in place, and this is how we're going to do it. But when we live in the upside-down kingdom, we actively push back against that darkness. We actually push back and go, hey, that's not how we were called to live. Paul tells us to walk in our lives in a manner worthy of the calling which we have been called to.

Daily Challenge To Serve Quietly

See, the world will tell you to protect your peace, guard your time, and elevate yourself. Jesus says, lay down your life. Which kingdom's rules are you dictating your daily decisions? So today, find one way, today, to serve someone from the bottom up. Do a task that's beneath your pay grade or your position. Serve your spouse by prioritizing their needs completely above your own today. And do it without pointing out that you're doing it. It's time to push back against darkness, and this is how we start.
