Persecution Or Pride

Pushback can feel spiritual, especially when you care about truth. But what if the resistance you’re getting isn’t persecution at all? What if it’s pride, harshness, or ego showing up under a religious label? We kick off the week with a quick, grounded devotion that draws a bright line between being opposed “on my account” and simply getting the natural consequences of how we speak and act.

We root the conversation in Matthew 5:11–12, right where Jesus closes the Beatitudes with a promise of blessing for those who are reviled and falsely accused. Then we slow down on the words we tend to rush past: “on my account.” That phrase forces an honest diagnostic for Christian living and discipleship. Are we reflecting the grace and truth of Jesus, or are we “picking fights” and calling it spiritual warfare? We also connect the heart posture Jesus describes throughout the Sermon on the Mount: poor in spirit, mourning sin, meekness, and the hard work of dealing with our own log before we try to address someone else’s speck.

Finally, we look at Jesus’ example. He was insulted and misunderstood, not because He was abrasive, but because He aggressively pursued the lost and crossed rigid social lines to be with the broken and the outcast. We close with a concrete Monday action step: revisit a recent conflict, ask God to search your heart, repent where you’ve been harsh, and pray for humility to separate personal opinions from the gospel. Persecution Versus Pride In Practice

So today we're going to jump into day one, the difference between persecution and pride. Our script scripture reference comes from Matthew 5, 11 and 12. And in it, Jesus makes this profound promise in the Beatitudes. He's wrapping them up, he's closing it out, but he says this you will be blessed when people revile you, persecute you, and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely. But there are three crucial words anchored at the end of that promise that we cannot afford to miss on my account. It's incredibly easy for modern Christians to confuse persecution with the natural consequences of pride. See, as we said in the sermon very plainly, if you're acting like a jerk, you're picking fights, you're beating people over the head with your Bible, the pushback you're receiving is not spiritual warfare. It is not spiritual warfare. It's just people reacting to your lack of grace. And everything we do, yes, we should call out sin. Yes, we should call people to repentance. All of those things need to happen. But as Paul would word in Galatians 6, as Peter would word in 1 Peter 3, we need to do it with a spirit of gentleness and love. The end game is to win a sinner. The end game is to have someone meet Jesus and let the spirit transform their life. The end game is not to win an argument.

Humility Before You Correct Others

We have to remember as we're looking at this the progression of the Beatitudes. Before Jesus ever gets to persecution, he talks about being poor in spirit, mourning our sin, walking in meekness. See, a heart that hasn't first been broken by its own sin has no business trying to correct the sins of others. Later on in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus is going to say this: How can you take the speck out of your brother's eye with the log in your own? We have to first start with ourselves and then work out from there.

Jesus And The Cost Of Pursuit

See, when Jesus was insulted, called a glutton, a drunkard, and a friend of sinners, it wasn't because he was abrasive. It was because he was aggressively pursuing the lost. He crossed the rigid social and religious lines of his day to sit with the broken, to be with the sick, to be where the outcast are.

Action Step For A Recent Conflict

So today, as we're kickstarting our week, we're here on Monday. Here is our action step. Take a hard, honest look at a recent conflict or point of friction in your own life. Whether it was online or whether it was in person, it doesn't matter, but ask God to search your heart. Is the pushback that you is happening because you are reflecting the grace and truth of Jesus, or is it because you're leaning into your own pride, anger, and ego? Repent of any harshness and pray for the humility to separate your own opinions from the gospel. I hope you have a great Monday.
