The Inevitable Collision

If you’ve ever tried to keep your faith “safe” by keeping it quiet, this short Field Notes devo will challenge you in the best way. We start with a simple Wednesday reminder from Lamentations 3: yesterday is done, and God’s mercies are new this morning. Then we step straight into a tension most of us feel but don’t always name: the moment following Jesus bumps into the values of the culture around us.

We walk through John 15:18-20 and confront a subtle lie that’s seeped into the modern church: if we’re just nice enough, quiet enough, and agreeable enough, the world will finally embrace us. Jesus doesn’t leave room for that fantasy. He warns that the world hated Him first, and He explains why the collision is inevitable. Not because Christians should be combative, but because light exposes what darkness wants to keep hidden. Flip on the switch, and the room changes.

We also ask a hard diagnostic question: if there’s zero friction, zero tension, and zero pushback, is our light actually shining, or is it hidden under a basket? Welcome to Field Notes. Happy Wednesday, halfway there, doing great. One foot in front of the other, one day at a time, right? That's all we can do. We are choosing to rejoice this morning because no matter how bad yesterday was, it's done. It's gone. And Lamentations 3 tells you that God's mercies are new for you this very morning. So with that in said, let's jump into it.

The Lie Of Staying Acceptable

So today we're going to look at the inevitable collision. Our scripture references John 15, 18 to 20. And we're going to jump in with this. There is a subtle lie that has infiltrated the modern church. The belief that if we are just nice enough, if we're just quiet enough, if we just agree enough, then the world will eventually embrace us. It's our ultimate goal, right? To not be outsiders, to be part of the group, to belong to the tribe. I mean, all you gotta do when you're looking up conspiracy theory is just look up the tribe belief. We've always wanted to, right? We negotiate a silent treaty with the culture, assuming that as long as we keep our faith private, we won't face any friction. As long as we keep it to ourselves and in our house, right? That's the separation that you guys are always talking about between church and state. But there's a problem with that. Jesus shattered that illusion entirely. See, Jesus warned his disciples, if the world hates you,

Light Always Exposes Darkness

know that it hated me before it hated you. If you go all the way back in John 1, it says, When Jesus came, he came to his own and his own rejected him. All Jesus had to do to be rejected, all Jesus had to do to be hated was be born. See, Jesus didn't draw fire because he was antagonistic. He drew fire because he was the light. See, by its very nature, light exposes what is hiding in the dark. The world was perfectly fine with its corruption, with its idols and its broken systems until Jesus stepped in, brought the light, and offered a better way. And if you're truly following Jesus, your life is going to cause a collision with culture. The darkness will always push back against the light. But listen, where there is light, darkness cannot be. Think about it. You go into a room, you close all the doors, cover all the windows, you turn the lights off, it's dark in that room. But what happens as soon as you flip that light switch? There is no more darkness. And that's what we're called to do as Christians is be a light. Be the salt of the earth. Be a light on a hill.

When Pushback Is A Sign

See if you're currently experiencing zero friction and zero pushback and zero tension in your faith. It is worth asking whether your light is actually shining or if it's hidden under a basket. Because Jesus has already told us these two kingdoms can't exist. The world loves its own. It will tolerate a watered-down, silent religion that demands nothing, but a faith that stands up and speaks biblical truth to a culture that worships itself will always draw fire. And when that fire comes, don't be surprised or terrified. It is the absolute proof that you are actually doing damage to the kingdom of the enemy. That's why Jesus said, Blessed are you when you are persecuted for my name's sake. Not because you're a jerk. Not because you're just mean and cold-hearted and all those things. Because you're sitting here going, I will not be quiet. My faith will not be private.

Action Step: Stop Staying Silent

So our actions our action step today. Where have you been negotiating with the darkness by staying silent just to keep the peace? Ask Jesus for the courage today to stop compromising your conviction for the sake of comfort because you don't want to rock the boat. KB has a great line in his song where he goes, I don't want to rock the boat, I want to sink it. Today, write down that area that you need to stop
