Speak Up About Jesus Today

If your faith never leaves your head, how will anyone else ever hear about Jesus? Today’s Field Notes is a heavier Friday conversation, because church history doesn’t let us pretend that “quiet Christianity” is the goal. The men and women who gave their lives for the gospel weren’t targeted for private thoughts, they were opposed because they spoke, preached, and refused to keep Jesus contained to one day a week.

We walk through the blunt logic of Romans 10: people can’t believe in someone they’ve never heard about, and they can’t hear if nobody will speak. Then we zoom out to Elijah on Mount Carmel, where bold public worship draws a clear line between the living God and false gods and where victory is followed by immediate backlash. That story helps us name a pattern we still feel today: the world often tolerates faith that stays inside church walls, but it pushes back when we share the gospel, call out idols, and bring light into darkness.

We also challenge the idea that evangelism is an optional program for a gifted few. We believe it’s the calling of every believer, even when it costs comfort, convenience, or reputation. Martyrs Died For Public Faith

gonna get into it. I'm gonna be honest, today is gonna be a little heavier. I know we're not ones to shy away from the heavy. I know that it's early in the morning. Hopefully, when you're listening to this and your day is just getting started, but this one's going to get heavy because throughout all church history, the men and the women who gave their lives for the gospel did not die because they held private internal thoughts about Jesus. Think about that. When we think about the martyrs and those who came before us and those people who have struggled, it wasn't because they were quiet. It wasn't because they were trying to fit in. It wasn't because Jesus was something they did for an hour

Romans 10 And The Need To Speak

and a half once a week. Stephen wasn't stoned for having a personal quiet time. William Tyndale wasn't burned at the stake for silently appreciating Scripture. These martyrs drew the wrath of the world because they opened their mouths. They took an internal conviction and they made it an external declaration. Your faith is given to you by Jesus, according to Hebrews, for Jesus, so that more may know Jesus. In Romans 10, Paul words it like this: How do they believe in him of whom they've never heard? And how are they to hear if there is no one there to preach?

Elijah On Carmel And Backlash

See, we see this boldness in the prophet of Elijah. And in with Elijah, he's standing on Mount Carmel in front of 450 prophets of Baal. Elijah doesn't just quietly disagree with the culture. He's not just sitting here going, I'm going to stick to my own, I'm good. He challenges their false gods publicly. He draws a line in the sand and he demanded that the people choose who they were going to serve. The fire of God fell and the victory was absolute and immediate. And the persecution immediately at that point from Jezebel began. Jezebel would have been fine had Elijah stayed out in the wilderness and just sat in a cave and worshiped God and kept his faith private. See, the world doesn't care if you go to church on Sunday, as long as you leave your faith at the church when you leave. But the moment you open your mouth to share the gospel, to call out idols, and to push back against the darkness, you become a threat.

Evangelism As Every Believer’s Calling

Somewhere along the lines, the churches forgot that evangelism is not an optional program for the elite few who have a gifting to talk. It is the calling of every believer to carry the light into the darkness, to go up to the gates of hell and literally knock them down. Yes, it will make you uncomfortable. And yes, you're gonna draw fire from the world. But how can they hear if no one's there to speak? We must be willing to risk our own comfort and even our own reputations to seek and save what is lost.

Action Step Share Jesus Today

And that is our action step today. Put it out there. There's someone in your phone you need to send a text to. There's someone you need to call and tell about Jesus. There's someone you need to go meet for coffee or tea or whatever it is that you drink that you need to sit here and go, hey, let me tell you who this Jesus guy is. There's a video you need to record. There's a post on social media you need to share. There's a podcast you're listening to that that you need to share so you can push back against the darkness. See, don't overcomplicate it. All you have to do today is share the truth and love of Jesus with someone today. So we hope you have a great Friday. I hope your week ends
