Most of us don’t reject God’s will, we just get stuck trying to “figure it out.” We spin our wheels over the perfect city, the perfect job, the perfect relationship, and we quietly start living like obedience requires a neon sign from heaven. Day four of Field Notes pushes back on that paralysis with a simple, biblical reset: God’s will is not a hidden code, it’s a clear mission.
We open Acts 1:8 and listen to what Jesus actually gives the disciples before He ascends. It isn’t a detailed itinerary or a personalized career roadmap. It’s power from the Holy Spirit for a purpose: “You will be my witnesses.” That ties straight into the Great Commission, where Jesus tells us to go and make disciples. Whether you lead a team, teach, build, parent, or work a job that feels ordinary, your primary calling stays the same: be salt where you are and point people to Jesus.
We also get painfully honest about why we overcomplicate guidance. Sometimes what we call “waiting on God’s will” is really waiting for comfort, certainty, and the perfect scenario. So we end with an action step you can do today: send a simple text to someone God brings to mind, ask how they’re doing, and offer to pray. Field Notes is taking daily discipleship by breaking down the sermon into bite-sized one-step pieces so that we continue discipleship throughout the week. Let's jump into it. Let's jump, let's jump, let's jump. Day four. Here we are at Thursday already. Man, this week's going fast.
But today we're going to talk about the will of God being revealed. We're going to start by looking at Acts 1.8. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth. One of the most paralyzing struggles for a believer is this the endless, agonizing search for God's will.
As a pastor, it's what I almost get asked the most. In fact, if if you were to ask me my top three questions, this is definitely up there. Like this is like it's like, how do I know I'm saved? What is God's will for my life? Like, that is pretty much what most people are sitting there struggling with. And we often treat God's will like this divine puzzle we have to decode. We stress over the exact city we are supposed to live in, the exact job title we're supposed to have, um the the exact person we're supposed to marry, how many kids we're supposed to have, what our house is supposed to look like. And it's almost like we live our life waiting for the burning bush, right? We we're waiting for God to go, hey, here is exactly everything. Here's the company you're supposed to work for, the person you're supposed to marry, the house you're supposed to live in, the street you're supposed to live on. It's like we're waiting for this neon sign from heaven to make our decisions. But listen, God's will, it's not that complicated. It's not this hidden mystery that we can't figure out. In Acts 1, what we just read, right before Jesus ascends into heaven, he doesn't give his disciples a detailed itinerary of their career paths. He's not sitting here and going, hey, here's this here's the schools you need to go to, and here's the job you need to go get, and here's the company you need to work for, and here's the super like he doesn't
do that. He gave them a definitive mission statement. He told them, You will receive power for what? To be my witnesses. That's that's God's will for your life, right there. Tell other people about Jesus. It is that simple. God's ultimate will for any Christian's life is this make disciples. Right before Acts 1, we're in Matthew 28, right? And what does Jesus say? Go make disciples. It's really that easy and that straightforward.
See, and whether you're running a Fortune 500 company or you're teaching high school math, or you're rebuilding engines, or you're mulching, or you're whatever the case may be, your lame pipe, it doesn't matter. Your primary calling as a Christian is this be salt where you are. God moved you to where you are. Doors opened up for you to be exactly where you are, and he puts you there so that you could be salt right there. See, when I'm bringing in a brisket, the salt doesn't get to ask, hey, can I be on the flat or can I be on the point or can I be on the fat cap? The salt just goes where I put it, and then the salt does what it's supposed to do right there on the meat. See, you are right where you're supposed to be because God's sovereignty allowed you to be there, to seek and save what is lost, to make disciples.
We often overcomplicate the will of God because we want a personalized roadmap that that isn't really like what's God's will, but we want our own comfort, success, and fulfillment. See, but God didn't give us that. He gave us a mandate that focuses entirely on his glory and the salvation of others. You don't have to guess what you're supposed to be doing today. The Bible is very clear.
So our action step today is this Are you using the excuse of waiting on God's will or looking for the perfect scenario to justify your silence in action right now? Stop waiting for a magical feeling and send a text message to someone that God brings to your mind. Simply tell them you're thinking about them. Ask them how their day is going. Ask them if there's anything you can pray with them about. You'd be shocked at the answers you get on stuff like that.
