Inspired by their faith and their son Army Sergeant Joshua Cope's recovery after an IED blast in Baghdad, they discuss their 17-year journey supporting combat-wounded warriors, spouses, and caregivers in Bay County, Florida.

I am here today in the studio with, and I say studio, while I'm sitting in room six of the lodge at Cocktail Slough on Lake Martin with the Coke family at the Coke family reunion with my Uncle Philip, my Aunt Linda, and my cousin Jonathan. So glad to have them with us in our studio, our made-up studio today, to speak about their ministry, the Warrior Beach Retreat. I am really excited about what the Lord is doing through them. Aunt Linda, Linda Cope is the founder and president of the Warrior Beach Retreat, and Philip is the VP and Jonathan is the encourager. I'm so glad to have you in the studio today.

Honor to be here. Lindsay, thank you so much for having us. Wonderful ministry that you have. Thank you. We started hosting retreats for combat wounded warriors and their spouses or caregivers 17 years ago. But it started after our son, Army Sergeant Joshua Cope, lost both legs above the knee and wounded his hands by an IED blast in Baghdad, Iraq. And we as a family saw firsthand what war does to not just the veteran or his wife, but all of the children. I say it's like a rock thrown upon a pond, and then you have a ripple effect that goes out, and it affects so many. And uh we are local, we're a 501c3 nonprofit, not affiliated with Wounded Warrior Project in in Bay County, Florida. And we we God just birthed this in our heart after what happened to our son. And it's been God's really blessed it. But it's been a ministry of faith because again, we're a grassroot American not profit right there in the panhandle of Florida.

Yeah. Well, praise the Lord for the work that you're doing. If you could just tell me a little bit about the Warrior Beach Retreat and and what your mission is.

Well, um, I'm Philip and uh thank you, Lindsay, for having us today.

Absolutely.

Uh Warrior Beach Retreat is about bringing combat wounded warriors and their spouses who were uh served in uh Iraq or Afghanistan during the war. And if they were combat wounded, then they qualify to come on the retreat. Uh they don't have to miss limbs or anything like that. They just have to have a diagnosis like PTSD or TBI from the military showing that they are combat wounded. And once they are approved, we bring eight couples on a retreat twice a year into Panama City Beach. And what we do there is we provide lodging for them and all the meals. One day we have a uh fishing trip for the men where they all go out on a fishing trip together. We have a wonderful supporter for that. He's always donated the trips every time we've uh had a retreat. That's incredible. He's real passionate about uh our mission. And matter of fact, he is the one that actually encouraged Linda to start a nonprofit because he brought some warriors in one time and he loved it. So he just hounded Linda about Linda, you've got to bring some more warriors. I want them to come on my boat. I'm gonna take them fishing. He's a dedicated Christian man and he he he wants to and he felt like God was calling him to do this this work, and so that's kind of how it kind of spurred us on to start this. Linda said, if we're gonna do this, we're gonna start a nonprofit. And we're going to bring them in and do it, you know, God's way. And we had no blueprint for this. We had no idea what we were doing. We just it was a step-by-step faith all the way, and God has opened miraculous doors for us that we never dreamed that would happen.

And then on the same day the men go uh deep sea fishing, Lindsay, the lady, Luna takes them to a spa day.

We really want to bring honor to the spouses or caregivers, because when we were at Walter Reed with Joshua, there was so much that was being done for the veteran. And the caregiver was just kind of left in the dust. Ladies need a day. You got a girl, you got a girl. And sometimes there are men with the ladies of the window warrior, but they don't get to go on the spa day. They have to go deep-sea fishing. But we we um take the ladies in a stretch hammer limousine to the Sandest and Spa we're there all day. They have breakfast, lunch, and they get two spa choices, and we have it's they they feel like queens for the day. I guess I need to find me a warrior then, so that I can get a warrior beats retreat. After our lunch, we have a time where we share and talk and pray for one another, and so much healing goes on because the ladies are all together, having their time, and then the guys are on that boat. If I were there, I'd be throwing up. I can't do that stuff, but they're bonding separate from the ladies, and you know, God moves. There's tears and prayers, and you know, going, Oh, your husband does this too. You know, because it's just it's just like Phillip said, Well, God gave us the blueprint because there's nothing like this in the nation. Yeah, and uh, we have great speakers that come and they they I don't know if people know Lieutenant Colonel Alan West, but he's become a friend. He came and spoke years ago, no charge. We just flew him here, took care of his room for the nights he was here, and he said, I want to come back every February, even if I have to park cars. Because he saw our hearts to be involved and our passion, and he's a great, great American. That's great, and we are blessed and honored to have him to want to be part of what what we do. But we also have three small retreats. You come on a big retreat one time, and that's eight couples, and they come from all across the country, and they only come one time. We don't have the repeat people because we have a waiting list for two years. And now with the war in Iran, they will qualify to come to the ones that are injured from that war because it's combat injured since 9-11. Okay, and so that's who qualifies to come. Okay. But it's just a time of encouragement and healing and blessing. And we also have every venue on the beach, I we contact them and they get to go for free while they're there for the week. But we do the mini retreats to strengthen their marriages, and those are for five days. You come on a big retreat one time with eight couples, you come on a small retreat one time with four couples. And it's miraculous to see the change from the major retreat to the mini retreat on how they're doing. Yeah, I'm sure.

And and what I see too is that there are lifelong connections that are built here that benefit them for a lifetime. They're able to fellowship and to relate to other warriors and um other stories where they're building friendships that will be um forever. So lifetime, yes.

So another important event that we do uh on the second uh day of the uh retreat, we have a uh ceremony parade and dinner for the Windy Warriors. What happens uh there is the local police and um sheriff department come and they lead us in a motorcycle police escort for one hour in uh in the route that we usually take from the hotel to where we have the ceremony. Usually it's in Panama City Beach and then in Panama City. So now it's become more in Panama City Beach because we're trying to hold our ceremony in Panama City Beach. So it's one hour long, and then we advertise it through media and through uh probably a thousand posters we put out in different businesses.

And we have hundreds of people that show up on the parade ride with signs and flags thanking these warriors for their service. And they just ride in a car like 30 miles an hour, and then we have uh local businesses that join us, we have uh uh many motorcycles that are in in in the parade. People just volunteer and show up and ride with us. And then we uh cross uh we pass the Navy base and they have the uh servicemen sitting out by the fence dressed in uniforms, saluting us as we go by.

And then we hop up on the Hathaway Bridge, and then they have um big, huge American flags that are waving for them as they pass by. And then the local helicopters uh from the sheriff's department sometimes when they can, they'll come over and follow the parade. Wow, you know, and dip down.

Truly make them feel like a hero.

And they've never seen anything like this before. You know, they're completely surprised.

And they deserve it, and they really deserve it.

And then we go to the uh to the venue where we have the ceremony and the dinner, and we have a speaker and a dinner, and we just honor them, introduce them uh in in the ceremony, have their uh picture up on the screen, and then during the ceremony, two of the couples that have come on the retreat get up and share what the treat has meant to them. And after seeing that parade, they are blown away. I'm sure. And and then the community can hear their response and say, Wow, this organization is really doing something special for these people. Yes, wow, you know, so it makes a great impact.

Absolutely. That sounds incredibly impactful. And um, wow, I'm I'm just blown away. I I need to come and participate and be a part of this. But one thing I do want to mention is, you know, with this podcast being named My Father's Business, I know that you both are about our father's business. And so um, as far as what that means to you, I know the mission in itself says a lot, but if you could tell me a little about um, you know, your calling and and and your gifts and and what it means for you to walk out your father's business.

It's made purpose for our lives. And the blessing is it's my husband and I and our son Jonathan who helps us so much. Um and it's because of our son Joshua that we do this. But it's a vision God gave us, it's unique in the nation, and we want to keep it to Bake County because we we want quality, not quantity. And um it just when we see the transformation from when they get off the plane or when they come and when they leave, they're totally different people. Because Philip, we also have in the parade, they have a magnet with their name on the car, they have a box of clinics because they are all they're all crying, I'm sure. And they have a flag in their window, and most of them went from the battlefield to the hospital to home and never got a hero's welcome. And we have a very supportive, patriotic community, especially when the sheriff helicopter comes flying and hovering over. It's it's beautiful. But we're grateful for the support of the community because we are a 501c3 and we need donations. So anybody listening that would like to give, it's warriorbeachretreat.org. Warriorbeechretreat.org. Yeah, absolutely. But there's nothing more fulfilling in life than to be about your father's business. That's right. When you know this is what he's called you to do.

Yeah. And we know in Romans 8.28 that the Lord uses all things for the good of those who love him, and to know what you went through with your family and with your son, um, how devastating that was at the time. Can we speak a little bit into how you held fast to your faith, knowing that the Lord was still going to produce something good of this when you were in the midst of that trial?

SPEAKER_01 13:12

Uh Lindsay, I think uh what this this War You Beach Retreat has done to um increase my faith is when we f Lindsay first started this, I told her, I said, this is not something I want to do. And after about the first or second retreat, I realized this is what God wants me to do. And so God has blessed me with the gift of administration, He's blessed Linda with the gift of media, and he's blessed Jonathan with the gift of encouragement. And I've just seen their gifts and my gifts really increase.

It's really amazing. Linda does not fear getting in front of the media, and I love to get on the computer. I love to get have a task to perform and make it happen, do all the logistics and the details. That is my gift. And Jonathan is a great encourager. Yes. You know, Jonathan still calls warriors all the time, encourages them. Praise the Lord and gives them words from God and really encourages them and blesses them. And they they love Jonathan.

And so one another thing I want to add to that. Often our pastor has shared this. He said, you know, what glorifies God is what God produces in us, mostly from our struggles and not our victories. A lot of times we think, oh, we got to get on that mountaintop, you know, to serve God or be joyful all the time. But it's usually in the valley that God does his greatest work in us. Exactly. And because this that happened to our son, we could have turned and blame God and been bitter. But we chose to let it grow in us and realize there are other pity people out there hurting that need to encouragement, that need us. God needs to use us to reach them. And I just can't tell you what a blessing is to reach these warriors, and we're so excited about it. Well, one of our um volunteers said, You guys are excited about it every time you do it. We are, because when you're in God's will and you're doing God's will, he gives you joy about it, you know, and that's what's so exciting.

Amen. That reminds me of 2 Corinthians 12, 9 that says, My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in your weakness. So it is in those trials that we walk through that his strength is made known, and his ability to transform and to produce character and to produce patience. That all happens in the hard times, right? And it's easy to forget when we're in the midst of it, but there's always something beautiful on the other side.

Well, we got the phone call at 12:30 at night that our son was that Joshua injured. And I'm from a family of eight kids. I called everybody. I said, Joshua, we got a call from his wife, and they were in Launchdown, Germany, that Joshua's been injured. We don't know the severity of it, but he might lose his arm, might lose a leg, but we don't know. And she was cool as a cucumber. And when I told Philip, I said, Philip, you know, we I called my whole family because I have two brothers that are doctors. One was a flight surgeon in Villad. And I said, Y'all be praying. Be praying. But what might sound strange, it's not to me. Uh, the day before, because I fasted and prayed for Josh while he was gone. I saw a vision of him laying in the dirt, and I prayed and interceded. And that's exactly what happened. He was in a Hummer, ran over an IED, the Humvee was blown up. Two of the guys to the left were killed instantly, and Josh was thrown out of the Hummer, and they thought he was dead, and they were under fire. And the leader said, Don't go get Coke. He didn't want them to get killed, too. But Joshua, everybody loves Joshua. So they went out under fire after Joshua raised his hand to God, because Joshua raised his hand to God because he thought he was gonna die. And they went out under fire and and got our son and put tourniquets on him, and then they flew him to the cache, which was in Balad. Well, my brother Brian called Balad, and he told us the severity of Joshua's wounds. His wife didn't even know yet. She didn't know. He said, Linda, Joshua has lost both of his legs. And at the time they weren't so high above the knee, but in war, those they put all this crap in them, the IEDs, so he had to keep getting his legs cut off and cut off and cut off. He actually had a knee when he started. But I remember when I told Philip he wailed. My husband just wailed because Josh was very active at sports and everything. And now his legs were gone. And so I said, What do I do? Because Eric is about to drive from Launstall, I mean to Swanfort to Lawnstool, she you know, to see Josh. And um, and he said, if she's not alone, she needs to know before she goes to the hospital. So I called her and I made sure she wasn't alone, and I I told her the extent of the injuries. And I'll never forget the story she told me when she went into the hospital room. Joshua was laying flat, and he was so swollen because they give you so many drugs. And he said, I want to sit up. I want to sit up. And she said she didn't want to be alone when he sat up. And they had, I think, a chaplain come in the room, and he sat up, and he looked down, and the sheets were flat where his legs used to be, and he cried like a baby. And his wife said, Joshua, you're gonna walk one day, you're gonna walk one day, and that's some of the hell that we as a family through those years and sitting at his bedside at Walter Reed and him writhing in pain because they wouldn't give him a spinal tap, and they kept cutting off his legs. And my brother said, Give him a spinal tap. But when you're in the trenches and you see war is hell, and you're never the same when you come back, and your family, some people don't understand what war does to you. It changes you, yeah. You know, it changes us because we were touched by that, and we see that the journeys our son has been through all these years. Um, and it's it's not been easy for him or for his family. But because of that, we chose to let God, because you have to let God. We like my husband said, we could have just gotten bitter and said, to heck with this, we're mad. Use our pain to help hundreds and hundreds.

But again, we need donations to do it. Warriorbeechretreat.org because we have to pay for all the rooms and so many of the things that we do with them. And we're not giving them anything but first class because that's what they've given to us. So, you know, we appreciate everybody's prayers for us and for our family and for all the couples coming for the retreats that are upcoming, because it's just beautiful to sit back and see the ones, because Philip will go through the list. It's first come, first serve with application. And he goes through so many, and then the the eight couples we wind up having come are like we're handpicked by God to be there that week. And we see the connections and we see they heal each other. We just provide the the venue where they're treated with honor and respect to heal. Yeah, you know, so it's that's incredible. Jonathan, you want to say anything?

He's over there crying, but I wanted to say um that that no matter what you're going through, and these guys are going through, they can have hope and healing that only can be found in Jesus Christ.

And the relationship they can experience is can be found in him, and knowing that no matter what they go through in the heart's heart and their mind and the struggles and the PTSD and everything, and they can find the God's grace and his love and his presence surrounding him, and uh they need their prayers and they're they're not alone in um their heartbreak and the thing that they've bought through. People may not understand, but we do and we get because we've been through it, and I get to encourage and I get to be there, I get to be a friend, and just listen, and just that's all I need. There's someone to listen to their stories and what they've gone through and they'll all come down and you get to be real and you get to be used as his God's vessel to minister and serve and love only guys and gallons because that's what they need most, and knowing that they get to make connections and that's what's important. And God w and all the Lord wants is his heart, our heart in their hearts in their relationship with Him and with each other. So I just felt like I need to share that.

Amen. Thank you for sharing that, Jonathan. Um it's it's so beautiful to see the work of healing and restoration that's taken place through you and how God is using you and your ministry to bring that, the three of you. That's incredible. So we spoke about the hope and the restoration and the healing that takes place. Let's hear some testimony. Do you have a story that you can share how you saw God at work through the retreat?

SPEAKER_01 22:56

Yes, Lindsay, I have an amazing testimony that really uh cemented it to me that that God was really using us and doing a mighty work through our retreat. Uh, we had a young gentleman uh come on our retreat. He was in a wheelchair. However, he wasn't completely bound in a wheelchair. He could uh, you know, get out of the wheelchair and get back in it, but he mostly sat in his wheelchair most of the time. Well, he had been talking with one of our chaplain at the retreat, and he told the chaplain that he didn't believe in God. You know, he said, I don't believe in God at all. And so um the chaplain just prayed for him, God show him that you're real. Well, one night he uh was on the balcony, he was up kind of high in the condo, and he wanted to take his life. So he stepped out of the wheelchair and leaned over on the balcony, intending to end his life, and he shared with us that when he did that, a hand prevented him from doing that. Wow, a force prevented him from jumping off the ledge. And he shared that with us and admitted that God was real.

And it so drastically changed his life that he came back later on a mini retreat walking with a cane, and he his whole demeanor was totally changed.

Wow, praise the Lord.

God had really touched him and shown him the truth. Radical, supernatural miracle.

Yes, experience, praise the Lord.

That was an encounter right there. Well, we have a shared time like a church service for like two hours, the last day of the retreat. And we about fell out of our chairs when he said that. Because he was sitting at he pulled himself up, was sitting on the ledge of the balcony, leaning back to flip off, and he was on a top floor, and we thought, man, we gotta make sure, because we try to make sure everybody's in a good stable place, but you just don't always know. We thought we're gonna anybody we question, we're putting on a bottom floor. No top floor condos. Right, even forward. We have to pay for everything now. They used to donate before COVID, but now they don't, so we have to pay for all the hotel rooms. But you know, hopefully some people listening will want to help and support us. But you know, he said he leaned back and he felt a hand pushing back up. He could not do it. So we're sitting there going, Wow, thank you, Lord. Yeah, we are grateful, we are grateful. Yes, but we do have that share time, and we we pass around a sheet of paper where they exchange everybody's contact information and they keep up with each other after the retreats. So it's special, absolutely.

So Lindsay, I'd like to share another testimony that uh we had. This happened, uh I don't know, it might have been ten years ago. We were having a um a dinner one night. Uh, I guess the retreat had been going on three or four days, and a couple came up to us and said, We like what we see in you and we want it. In other words, they were saying, We want to know Christ, we want to know Jesus.

That's right.

And so we had chaplain there, and we and uh had the chaplain come over and he prayed with them and they accepted Christ as a praise the Lord. So that was thrilling, you know, to know that that that we show the love of Christ, absolutely, and and they wanted Christ in their life. That's what it's all about. That's what our life is just compassion. It should be all about about showing the world who Jesus is.

That's right.

And get that would give others a desire to accept Christ and follow him.

Yeah. Praise the Lord for your surrender and your obedience to the Lord in that, and he is using you in a mighty way. That's beautiful.

SPEAKER_02 26:46

Well, and we don't have scheduled meetings and stuff throughout the retreat. We have a chaplain couple available if they want to talk. And they have breakfast, lunch, and supper, and they can do the free activities, but they don't pay a dime. We cover all the cost, we cover the rental cars. We ask for them to get there because when they have skin in the game, they're less likely to last-minute cancel. That's right. So there we learn the transportation and you cover all the time. And we cover that and we pay for everything else. But if there are some people that cannot get there, we pay for their flights or their gas. But they have rental cars for everybody that flies in. And when they come to the airport, the airport director announces their name on the plane. He steps on the plane and announces who they are, and the whole plane claps for them and they're freaking out. They're going, What? And then they're escorted down the stairs or the elevator, and there's a red carpet laid out with all these people on either side holding American flags to honor and greet them, and military flags, and then there's a crowd and shakes their hands, and they're just going, What? What? But one of the big things is they're they they find out I'm a lot of these guys don't leave their houses. They don't want to leave their homes. They deal with all these, you know, the enemies of war, the unseen war of the you know what goes on in their heads. And so we one time had a couple that was coming up from Orlando, and her husband the husband looked at his wife, he said, I'm not going. Because he never left the house. I don't want to be around all these people. And they and she said, Fine. So he turned the car around to go back home. And the next thing you know, he's turning it back to go back toward Panama City Beach. And she said, What's going on? He said, I don't know. I just feel like I'm compelled to be there. And then after the power of Christ. I know the power of Christ. And and then we connected with them after, and they were not the same couple. He was somebody that coming there. Transformed. Yes, he was able to say, I can get out of these four walls, and and and I I won't I won't fall apart. But most of them feel isolated and alone. And when they come, they realize I'm not forgotten. My sacrifice was not in vain. And they feel like they're part of a group. Because they do, they connect like with eight other couples, and they call and they keep up. And then of course Jonathan calls them. Yeah. It's all connected.

Yeah. That's incredible. Wow. Well, this has just been a beautiful testament of the Lord's work and how he works all things for good. And I hope that this stirs the faith of our listeners for those that might be walking through various trials right now. Is there an encouraging word that you can share with our listeners for those that may be walking through a difficult circumstance right now?

SPEAKER_02 29:48

Well, I will share that when I was driving in the car, when we were going through this, we heard about Josh. It was before we flew up to Walter Reed to go be with him, too. A song came on about how God was going to use this. But I think sometimes when we're walking in the darkness, we think, You're going to use this? And we've seen how he's used it to help hundreds and hundreds. So I would just give hope to anybody in a dark place. Keep your eyes on Jesus. He is the author and finisher of our faith. And he will, if you let him, use your pain to help others that have gone through similar things and share it so they know if you made it, I can make it.

That's right. Amen. Thank you. That's good. That's good. He that began a good work in you will bring it to completion. That's really good. And I know Jonathan has a good word. This encourager over here, I know it's in him, it's bubbling up. So let's hear it, Jonathan.

Uh just know this. That God knows that everything you're going through. The trials that you counter all joy. Know that he loves you. And his presence is with you. Cling to him and his word and his love. And know that he will never leave you nor forsake you. And know that uh you're you're not alone in what you're going through. He knew it's gonna happen, but God still has a plan and trust that he knows what he's doing, and he's gonna use it and open doors so you can be able to help and encourage, minister to others, no matter what you go through, and um you never know what he's gonna give you, and just to help others serve him and serve others and show the love of Jesus because people need it.
