Pregnancy changes everything, including how you think about your body, your nervous system, and what “safe care” actually means. We’re joined by Drs. Gavin & Brooke Barton of Growing Oaks Family Chiropractic in Bloomsburg, PA, a husband-and-wife team (and high school sweethearts) building a practice around one clear mission: help families create a stronger health foundation from the very start.

We get specific about prenatal chiropractic and perinatal care, including the common fear that getting adjusted while pregnant is unsafe. They walk us through what they actually do in the office, what they avoid, and why they’ve invested in training like the Webster technique to support balance in the pelvis and sacrum so baby can grow and develop with more ease. Brooke also shares her personal experience receiving chiropractic care throughout pregnancy.

Then we zoom in on pediatric chiropractic and why kids don’t need to be in pain to benefit from care. They explain how gentle adjustments are for newborns and children, what concerns parents often bring up (like sleep and bed wetting), and how their family-centered approach shapes everything from the first visit to ongoing support. You’ll also hear about their free first baby adjustment, a postpartum home visit option, local community networking events, and upcoming gatherings like Dads and Donuts and Bloom and Grow Collective.

If you’re a parent, expecting, or simply searching for family chiropractic in Bloomsburg, this conversation offers clarity and practical next steps. Subscribe, share with a local family, and leave a review so more listeners can find trusted local businesses and health resources.

SPEAKER_02

Meet Growing Oaks Family Chiropractic

SPEAKER_02

And today I have the pleasure of introducing you to Dr. Garton and Brooke Barton of Growing Oaks Family Chiropractic. Thank you so much for being here with me today. How are you guys doing?

SPEAKER_04

Doing great. Doing great. Thanks for having us.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, thank you so much.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I have to say, you are the first um, I would say couple uh doctors, and not just a couple of doctors, but a couple of doctors um that are doing this. I'm so intrigued. Could you tell us? We're excited to learn about your business. Tell us how this all came to be. Sure.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, absolutely. So um, Dr. Gavin and I have been together for 10 years. Um, so we are high school sweethearts and have been together since then. Um, kind of both going through different journeys to get us to where we're at. Um, but yeah, we are happily established. Our um practice is called Growing Oaks Family Chiropractic. Um we're located on Old Berwick Road in Bloomsburg. And um we've been there since October of 2025. So we're fairly new. Um, we are from the area, but um fairly new practice open in the area. Um, we see a lot of pregnant mamas, kiddos, um, and just all around families who really want to expand in um their health and wellness.

SPEAKER_02

That's great.

From High School To Chiropractic School

SPEAKER_02

And how did you uh how did you get into this? I want to like go really deep and say high school sweethearts. Like what was this the plan back then to like go in this direction?

SPEAKER_04

Oh gosh, I do not think so. I don't think either one of us were really expecting to have doctor in front of our name in high school, but um, you know, so is life, and that's where it led us. So um, yeah, we like she said, we kind of really tag teamed along with each other since high school. So we um graduated high school, did our undergrad at Bloomsburg University, uh, both majoring in exercise science, and then um went on to school for chiropractic down in South Carolina. Um, but really the the whole start of it is like she used to work for a local chiropractor here in the area. So she got mentored really hard by him just to kind of see what chiropractic is and what it's all about. And if I'm being quite honest, I kind of just tagged along and I was like, wow, this is pretty cool. So if I had to say who got me into chiropractic, I'd say it would be my wife. Um, but she was really heavily influenced by that other chiropractor in the area too, which I then got mentored by him as well.

SPEAKER_02

That that's wonderful, and I am a sucker for love. So to see, you know, this and this and uh knowing the support of having a partner going through all of this was probably both good and maybe a little challenging as well.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, absolutely. So um Dr. Gavin was actually a year behind me, both in high school, um, undergrad. Um, and so I graduated now um a year before him and um decided to wait after undergrad until we both could move down south together. So we both moved down south together. That way we could go through that process together. So yeah, it's been fun doing things together. We both obviously have our strengths and weaknesses and things. Usually he's more of the business guy, financial guy. Let's get this kind of done. And I am the uh creative, expansive, um, all of that kind.

SPEAKER_02

That that's wonderful.

Pregnancy And Kids Chiropractic Misconceptions

SPEAKER_02

Um, I'm I'm curious with chiropractic. There's a lot of misconceptions. Can you maybe address some of those for us?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, so let's talk about um perinatal um chiropractic. Um, so that is addressing and adjusting um pregnant mamas throughout pregnancy. Um, a lot of times um medical doctors, OBs, all of that will say maybe that it's unsafe to get adjusted while you're pregnant. Not only is a female's um body um adapted um to carrying a baby and all of that, um, but so is obviously you are more suppressed, have a suppressed um nervous system and all of that when you're carrying a little one. Um but really perinatal chiropractic is super, super important and can help and help a baby thrive and develop. Um, so I um got chiropractic care throughout my whole pregnancy. We have a 16-month-old, um, his name is Oakland, and um Dr. Gavin addressed me the entire time throughout pregnancy. And so there are just typically some things that we avoid doing when a mama comes in. Um, we have tables with a drop piece in the middle so that the belly can kind of lay down. That way, mamas can lay comfortably on their stomach. Um, we don't do any of the twisting, rotating that you would find some other chiropractors doing in the low back. Um, but our office is certified in a technique specifically called the Webster technique, and that works a lot with balancing muscles, bones, ligaments, all within the sacrum so that baby can grow in there, thrive, and develop. Um, another misconception, you know, is with kiddos getting chiropractic care. Kiddos typically don't complain of neck pain, back pain, those kinds of things. Um, but there are other things that chiropractic can really help adjust and work with. Um, so maybe a kiddo isn't sleeping through the night. Um, maybe um a 12-year-old is still dealing with um bed wetting, different things like that. Um, so the way that we adjust little babies and kiddos is um we like to compare it to the same amount of pressure that you would put on a closed eyeball. So that just little light pressure is all that it takes to um adjust the kiddo's spine. And again, none of the twisting, anything like that, just light, very light touch forces to adjust then.

SPEAKER_02

Wow, that's amazing. So have you all um well, first let's go here.

Who They Serve And Signature Offers

SPEAKER_02

Who are and we've talked a lot about kids, who are your your target customers? How are you attracting them? And are you working with everyone, or are you really just specializing in the the mamas and the kiddos?

SPEAKER_04

So I will say our our target market or our target audience really is those pregnant moms, the babies, the kiddos. Um, just because we believe that health needs a good foundation and you need to start from the very start. Um, so that was one of our main goals of opening this chiropractic office is getting kiddos, babies, the youngest people that we can to get their health kickstarted at the right start. Um, so we also do see general population. So we see obviously people as little as you know, newborns and as old as they get. So, you know, everybody has a spine and everybody needs adjusted, they just don't know it yet. Um, but yes, our target market is is especially those pregnant moms, babies, kiddos.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and just picking off that, just some things that we do offer for our target market. So um pregnant mamas who come into the office, um, if you remain under care with us at our office throughout pregnancy to delivery, um, we do offer your first um postpartum visit at in the comfort of your home. So we can travel within an hour radius and come and see you. Um and then babies the first adjustment is also free as well. So we again we really like to start babies off on the right um start there with a good foundation to

Why They Chose The Name

SPEAKER_01

their health. Um and I guess we didn't really talk about our name, how we came up with the name. So Growing Oaks Family Chiropractic is a playoff of our son Oakland. Um, and so we like to refer to our little babies as little acorns. And so if you plant that seed of positive good health right from the start, they grow strong, steady roots in their nervous system, they grow and sprout into nice big strong trees, and then they grow their families into big strong trees, and then we have a whole vast forest and community of really well-adapted individuals.

SPEAKER_02

That's great. Start starting young. Um, have you ever thought about having your own podcast? The two you teaming up and and sharing your knowledge and wisdom about this.

SPEAKER_04

It would be a concept for sure. We haven't really kicked it around much, but maybe, maybe in the future, yeah.

Life Outside The Clinic

SPEAKER_02

Um, so outside of work, besides your your little one, what are you guys doing for fun?

SPEAKER_04

Oh man, he takes up a lot of our time, I will say. So I think we get a lot of joy, we get a lot of joy just like seeing him, watching him grow, doing things with him. Um, but we do have another niece that we do see pretty often here, too. So we like to take them around to the parks and uh take them to little little adventures too. So I think uh a lot of our time is well spent with little kiddos.

SPEAKER_02

It it really sounds like you both have a calling to to work with the the youngsters, which is beautiful.

Events, Specials, And Community Support

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Um, if there's one thing that you would like us all to remember about growing oats family chiropractic, what would that be?

SPEAKER_01

Um, I would say, you know, that both of us really just want to support families in the area. Whether you're a practice member in our office or not, um, you know, we do host a lot of networking community events, and a lot of time they're free events um at our office. Um, and so that's really what we want. We want to build network support systems with mamas, dads, um, different things like that. So we have a few of events upcoming here. Um right here, we're actually running a special um through just through the end of June, um where you get $26 off of your initial visit if you start care. Um, so that's running right now. Um shortly upcoming, we're gonna be announcing an event called Um Dads and Donuts. So we hosted a very similar event called Um Bagels, Bumps, and Babes, which is kind of geared towards mamas and their kiddos. So this one's gonna be kind of geared more towards dads and their kiddos. Um, so that one will be posted here soon. And then we also have an event um called Bloom and Grow Collective. So we meet every other month between our office and an office up in Sugarloaf. Um and we get together with birth educators, doors, midwives, um, and women's health professionals, hormonal um therapists, massage therapists, all of those things. Um, professionals and families um can come, share what they do, ask questions. And again, it's another free just networking and community event. Um, so just knowing about those things and just lots of events that we host throughout the year.

SPEAKER_02

That's

How To Find Them And Nominate
