SPEAKER_21

I need somebody's help. Not just anybody. You know, I need someone. When I was young, so much younger than today.

SPEAKER_05

But I never needed anybody's help in any way. Now and now these days are gone. I've got so self-assure. Now I've got out by the pain of mine. Open up a door. Help me if you can. I'm feeling down. I do appreciate you being well. Help me get my feet back on the ground. Won't you feel this? Please help me.

SPEAKER_21

Oh, so many ways. In the haze. But every now and then I feel so insecure.

SPEAKER_05

I've never done before. Help me if you can I'll feel him down. And I do appreciate you being round. Help me get my feet back on the ground. Won't you please help me?

I do appreciate you being round. Help me get my feet back on the ground. Won't you feel? Please help me. Help me, help me.

SPEAKER_00

That's the Beatles Would Help. July 1965 on a parlour Capitol Record label. The title track to both the film and the album. John Lennon later said he wrote it during a period of real vulnerability. But on a charge it was anything but weak. Number one in the US and the UK. Another unstoppable Lennon McCartney classic. Coming up, Marvin Gay, what a track that didn't hit the top ten. That became a fan favorite.

SPEAKER_01

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Marvin Gay. Inducted 1987. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, Marvin Gay was Motown's most expressive and groundbreaking artist. From the early duets to the socially conscious masterpieces of the 70s, he pushed soul music into deeper, more personal territory. A voice that still stops you in your tracks. Rock Hall legend Marvin Gaye.

SPEAKER_10

Don't go away. Don't be don't leave me.

SPEAKER_05

I want to have a don't be a tree. I love you, put me down, put me up.

SPEAKER_00

It shows Marvin right in that transitional period between early Motown and the Deeper Soul he'd unleash later. Next up is Sonny and Cher, what a tune that captures the full pop revolution of 65.

SPEAKER_05

Sonny and Cher.

SPEAKER_06

And if I say a thing or two That doesn't mean I'm all that mad Or that I think this place is bad We got a laugh, then the land is free And no one loves it more than me But a man's got a right to talk about What's on his mind?

These guys are one of the few bands giving the Beatles real chart competition in 64 and 65. Janetine followed with a late era surf jack. Hey, this is Dean Torrance of Janet I found a girl.

SPEAKER_05

Anybody can see just by looking at me, but I found a girl.

SPEAKER_00

It's one of our last carefree surf pop singles before everything changed. Jackie Lee is next, and yes, we're doing the duck.

SPEAKER_06

It goes like a little I know what you're thinking, babe.

SPEAKER_05

Shall it ain't the church no? Now if you come here to swim, the man you oughta look. The name of this dance. Shall they call a duck? Hell ought to run down to the river. Come on, baby. Can you get a duck? All on the start of lap your wings. Come on, baby. Do you get enough? Do the duck come on, baby. Come on, baby. Come on, baby. Come on, baby. You done look in the soul. Come on, day. All right. Do the duck out just like a tank. You're busting rot. But now you move it on the day. And now we put the stone up there. Do the jump Come on, baby. Come on, baby. Come on, baby. Come on, baby. Do the jump. Do the jump. Not just a little bit of soft. Not just a little bit louder. Do the death. Loud. Just a little bit louder. Do the death. Come on, do the dead.

unknown

Hey, do that.

SPEAKER_00

Uh Jackie Lee, real name Earl Nelson with the duck. A number 14, the pop chart hit. Number four on the RB, a dance craze hit out of the Merwood label. Pure Mid Sixties Club Energy there man. Herman's Hermits are next. Yeah, what a Peter Noon favorite.

SPEAKER_05

He may send you flowers, baby, every single day. Buy you fancy clothes from Paris. And have sweet things to say. But I can give you love. Sweet, sweet love. Now ain't that just a little bit bell? Uh oh.

unknown

Uh oh.

SPEAKER_05

Uh hoy take you to my books in a shiny little team. By your foot sand diamond bracelets, make you look just like a queen. But I can give you love. Sweet, sweet love. Now ain't that just a little bit? Oh, oh, oh. Love love. I could give up. As long as I may live I love now, just a little bit. As long as I may live. Well, he may want to buy and mention all that bill. Will you live with him forever? Baby, let it search a thrill. I can give you a sweet, sweet love. Now ain't let just a little bit better. Ho ho.

SPEAKER_00

Hitting number seven in the U.S., keeping their clean-cut British invasion charm rolling on the MGM record label. Peter No was only 17 when they broke big. One of the youngest frontmen of the era. Eddie Arnold is next with a country crossover classic.

SPEAKER_04

Say the things you used to say. Say she used to say.

SPEAKER_00

Stand up for the organ crew man.

SPEAKER_12

Another exciting episode in the life of the most fantastic crime fighter the world has ever known.

SPEAKER_15

And if so, could he change his number to smoke it in your eyes?

SPEAKER_12

Be listening to you tomorrow for another exciting episode in the life of the most fantastic crime fighter the world has ever known.

SPEAKER_00

Ah man, chicken man. The most fantastic crime fighter the world has ever known. Nick Orkin and the radio ranch crew kept these episodes short, sharp, and hilarious. Staple of mid-60s radio comedy, folks. Back to the music. The Knickerbockers are about to give us one of the best Beatles sound-alike tracks ever recorded.

SPEAKER_05

You're telling me that you'll be true. Lies, lies. That's all I ever get from you. Cheers, cheers, I should have made a cheers for you. Cheers, cheers, and now you'll love someone who's thinking you're such a smoke. I don't believe what you say. You leave me on this way. I can't believe what you say. I don't believe what you say. You believe me on this way. I can't believe what you say. I'm gonna make you sense something. Yeah, wake him up, big and mouth.

SPEAKER_00

Out of knickerbockers with lies, a number twenty billboard hit so Beatles esque. Many listeners thought it was the Fab Four. Recorded in Los Angeles, not Liverpool, but the harmonies are dead on, man. Yeah, Jennifer Day is gonna follow with a Sunshine Pop favorite soda commercial.

SPEAKER_08

The more you enjoy, the more you live.

SPEAKER_09

Enjoy the taste of propaganda enjoy the feeling that's from Christmas time. Enjoy the ride. You know it's right. Enjoy the moment you share with your friends. Enjoy the magic that never ends.

SPEAKER_08

Coca-Cola enjoy Coca-Cola enjoy.

SPEAKER_00

Oh boy, Jennifer Day, thank you for that, man. We are gonna enjoy our Coca-Cola. Next, the Letterman with one of their smoothest performances. Take a listen.

SPEAKER_05

There's a summer place where it may rain or storm. Can I stay and warm? In that summer place. Your arms reach out to me, and my heart is free from all care.

SPEAKER_04

For it knows there are no gloomy skies. We'd see through the eyes of those who are blessed with love.

SPEAKER_05

And the sweet secret of a summer place is that it says anywhere when to people share all their hosts, all their dreams, all their love, they're in your lettermen revisiting theme from a summer place on a Capitol record label, giving a Percy Faith classic their trademark harmony treatment.

SPEAKER_00

Perfect late-night radio texture there, man. Next produced by none other than Murray Wilson.

SPEAKER_05

I live for the sun because it makes fun pretty girls with their guys. Such a lot you can buy. Go, sun, sun, sun, sun, sunset, so, so my girl, my girl and me. Sun, so we will stay right by the sea. Living and life in this way. We're with the sun every day. We all live for the sun. Go sun, sun, sun, sun, center, sun, sun. Sun sets, sun for the mothers. Woe and the girls and their brothers. They all live on the sun. Go sun, sun, sun, sun, sweat, sun, so listen, sun. Don't be, don't be a joke. Take your girl by the hand. Walk with her in the sand. And always Yes, always. We gotta live for the sun. Sun song sun.

SPEAKER_00

I love for the sauna number 51 on the billboard. Produced by Murray Wilson. Yes. Brian's father. And then guess who's next?

SPEAKER_18

The spokesman The Western world has a common dedication to keep free people from predominations. Maybe you can't vote for it, but pen your battle stations. Or there'll be no need for voting in future generations. So over and over again, you keep saying it's the yes But I say it wrong We're just on the dawn of correction There are buttons to push into mighty nations But who's crazy enough? To risk annihilation The buttons are there to ensure negotiations So don't be afraid boy it's our only salvation It's over and over again You keep saying it's the end But I say you're wrong We're just on the time of correction Just tell me that marches won't bring integration But look what it's done for Loader registrations Be thankful our country allows demonstrations Instead of condemning Make some recommendations I don't understand the cause of your aggravation You mean to tell me boy it's not a better situation So no again You keep saying it's the end But I say you're wrong We're just on the top of correction You missed all the good in your evaluation What about the things that deserve commendation Where there once was no cure There's vaccination Where there once was a desert There's Vegetation Self-governments replacing Colonization What about that peace core organization?

SPEAKER_00

Don't forget the work of the United Nations over and over again you can say it's the end But I say you're wrong We're just on the tones of correction But I say you're wrong We're just on the tons of correction So and over again you keep saying it's the end But I say you're wrong We're just on the dawn That's a good cut man The spokesman with the Dawn of Correction an answer record of Barry McGuire's Eve of Destruction hit number 36 on the Billboard charts and sparked one of the earliest pop music political debates ever. The Vogues are next with their breakthrough hit.

SPEAKER_07

Every time we meet, everything is sweet. Oh, you so tender, I must surrender. My love is your love now forever.

SPEAKER_05

You're the one that I love to kiss, baby, you're the one that I really say, you're the one that I'm dreaming of, baby, you're the one that I love.

SPEAKER_07

Keep me in your heart, never let us pass. You must believe me. You're the one that I long to kiss. Baby, you're the one that I really kiss. You're the one that I'm dreaming of, baby, you're the one that I love. I adore you, and no one before you could make me feel this way. Yeah, since I met you, I just can't forget you. I love you more each day.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_07

Through the coming years Who all the while I know you'll be smiling Your love will guide me through every mark. You're the one that I long to kiss.

SPEAKER_05

Baby, you're the one that I kiss You're the one that I'm dreaming of.

unknown

Baby, you're the one that I love.

SPEAKER_05

You're the one that I'm dreaming of.

SPEAKER_00

Baby, you're the one that I love the Cohen C record label The Vogues with You're the One and a number four Billboard Smash produced in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Not LA or New York, man. Their harmonies help define the pre-sunshine pop sound. Noel Harrison is next. What a haunting French adaption.

SPEAKER_20

She left her neighborhood in which everyone would still be rich. She left her parents home and strayed with a vagabond who made vows of love she'd never heard. And she believed with every word. She left no fording address, just took her youth and happiness. That with the boy she vanished in. The secret sweetness of their sin. A young girl, a young girl sixteen. Childhood springtime still free. Lying here by the road. He told her love demanded space. So they roamed from place to place. Although she realized she'd sinned, she threw caution to the wind as she followed him around. While he slowly dragged her down. So overpowering was her love, but it had made a captive of the young girl's heart and soul and mine. In other words, love drove her blind. A young girl, a young girl of sixteen, child of springtime, still free, lying here by the road. Too much emotion for a girl. She let her heart become her woe. But worlds that God has never wrought fall asunder, we are taught. Had she been wiser, she'd have known she couldn't feed him love alone. She should have known the day would come when he would quit her just for crumbs. He needed fresh, new meat to come, and left her heart, soul, and mind to stun. A young girl, a young girl of sixteen, child of springtime still green, lying here by the road.

SPEAKER_00

Son of actor Rex Harrison with a young girl. Adapted from Charles I'll butcher this. A dramatic European flavored single that stood out on US radio in 65. Up next with a major head.

SPEAKER_03

My love is deeper than the deepest ocean, wider than the sky. My love is brighter than the brightest star that shines every night above. And there is nothing in this world that can ever change my love. Something happened to my heart the day that I had you. Something that I never felt before. You are always on my mind, no matter what I do. And every day it seems I want you more. My love is deeper than the deepest ocean, wider than a sky. My love is brighter than the brightest star that shines every night of love. There is nothing in this world that can ever change my love. Once I thought that love was meant for anyone else but me. Once I thought you never come my way.

SPEAKER_00

Early the next year on a Warner Brothers record label. Tony Hatcher's production gave her that signature downtown sound that dominated the mid-60s. The new baits are next! Changed everything.

SPEAKER_05

Once upon a time, it ran so fast. Do the both of time in your prime. Then you people call, say be wet all your minds, all you thought they were off. I'm kidding you. You used to laugh about hanging out. Now you don't talk so loud. Now you don't seem so proud. But having a bit sprouty. Your next meal How does it feel?

unknown

How does it feel?

SPEAKER_06

Alright, Miss Lowell, but you know you only used to get juiced in it.

SPEAKER_05

Nobody's ever taught you how to live out on the street. And now you're gonna have to get used to it. You say never compromise with the mystery trend, but now you realize He's not selling any alibies As you stand to the vacuum of his eyes and say, Do you want to make a deal? How does it feel? How does it feel? With no direction A complete note like a rolling stone Oh yo never turned around to see the frowns on the juggles and the clowns when they all did tricks for you Never understood that it ain't no good You shouldn't let other people get your kicks for you You used to ride on a prone horse with your diplomat carried on his shoulder Siamese cat ain't it hard when you discover that He really wasn't where it's at After he took from you everything He could steal How does it feel? How does it feel Campion No Discussion Like a computer Like a both Ahin says all his people and all the bitted people that are drinking thinking that they got it made Exchanging all precious gifts But you better take a diamond ring You better call it big You used to be so amused At Napoleon in rags In the language that he used Go to him now he calls you You can't refuse When you got nothing You got nothing to lose You're invisible now you got no secrets You can't see us How does it feel?

SPEAKER_00

Ah, how does it feel to be on your own With no direction Oh Lacka competitive No Columbia record label Bob Dylan Like a Rolling Stone released in July of 65, hit number two on the Billboard charts and widely considered the moment rock music grew up. I have to concur with that. That's another Al Randall favorite. There are six minutes long electric confrontational for sure radio stations didn't know what to do with it.
