Day 28: Romans 12: 1-2: A Living Sacrifice

Real transformation begins with surrender and renewed thinking.
Paul now moves from theology into daily living. Because of God's mercy, believers are called to offer their lives to Him. A "living sacrifice" means daily surrender, not just occasional religious moments.
Paul also says, Do not conform to the patterns of this world.
The world shapes people through values, pressure, and culture. But God transforms us by renewing our minds. Transformation happens as we begin thinking differently through God's truth.
Reflection ?: What influences your thinking more- God's truth or the culture around you?
Dig Deeper: What does daily surrender practically look like in everyday life?
Welcome back to day 28. I love today's title, A Living Sacrifice. And you'll love this. We only have two verses today. Our passage is Romans chapter 12, verses 1 through 2. And some questions to think on are these. What influences your thinking more? God's truth or the culture around you? What does daily surrender practically look like in everyday life? Let's read Romans 12, verses 1 and 2 together. Therefore, brothers and sisters, in view of the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God. This is your true worship. Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God. Amen. Yeah, those two verses pack a punch. And Romans 12 is a major transition. We're moving from explaining the gospel to explaining how the gospel changes our everyday life. Now we're talking about how we practically live with not just this knowledge, but the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. In view of God's mercy, offer your bodies as a living sacrifice. That phrase would stand out strongly to Jewish readers. Sacrifices in the Old Testament were brought to the altar and fully given to God. But now Paul says believers themselves become the offering. Not dead sacrifices, but living ones. This means your whole life becomes worship. Your choices, your relationships, your habits. And then Paul says, do not conform to the pattern of this world. The word conform means being shaped by outside pressure. Culture is always trying to shape how we think about identity, success, relationships, truth, all of it. But Paul says transformation happens another way through the renewal of the mind. That means following Jesus is not just behavior change. It's learning to think differently. And that process does take time. And you may know the word, now we've covered it a couple of times, it is the process of sanctification. The more your mind is shaped by God's truth, the more your life will begin to reflect Him. Amen. I just want to offer a prayer. First of all, God, just we're so thankful for you. We're so thankful for this time in our lives, God, that you have brought us together to study the word, to encourage each other, to point each other to Christ. And I just thank you for the word, God, because it doesn't just give knowledge, Lord. It allows us to begin to have our minds renewed through you, to align ourselves with your character, with your righteousness. God, we cannot do it on our own. God, we are all sinners, and we confess that. We surrender our lives to you, the one who knows far beyond what we do, the one whose ways are higher. We trust you and we ask that your Holy Spirit work, work in our hearts today, transform us so that we can be more like you. Help us to have discernment, to recognize when we are going after, chasing after something because culture is telling us to chase after it, not you. Lord, I just pray that your voice be so clear and so strong to everyone listening and following along and seeking you, that that discernment becomes easy to tell what is of your will and what is not. In your powerful, omnipotent, sovereign name, we pray today. Amen. Talk to you tomorrow.
