Day 32: (Armor of God) Truth & Righteousness: Ephesians 6:14

The gospel secures our identity and shapes our daily lives. Paul begins describing the armor of God with the belt of truth and the breastplate of righteousness. Truth anchors us in what God has revealed, while righteousness reminds us that our standing before God rests on Christ's finished work. Secure in Him, we are called to live lives that increasingly reflect His character.

Hey everyone, welcome back. We're in day 32. Today we're talking about truth and righteousness as part of the armor of God. We're in Ephesians, and we're only reading one verse today, chapter 6, verse 14. It reads, Stand therefore with truth like a belt around your waist, righteousness like armor on your chest. Amen. That's the word of God. Paul begins describing the armor of God with the belt of truth and the armor of righteousness. In other texts, it used the word breastplate instead of armor of righteousness. Truth anchors us in what God has revealed, while righteousness reminds us that our standing before God rests on Christ's finished work. Secure in him, we are called to live lives that increasingly reflect his character. The gospel secures our identity and shapes our daily lives. Now imagine what the Roman soldier Paul likely saw wore every day while under house arrest. The belt he wore wasn't decorative. It secured the soldier's tunic and held the rest of the armor together. Without it, everything else became unstable. Paul intentionally begins with truth. Jesus didn't merely teach truth. He said, I am the truth. Truth is ultimately found in a person. Today we often define truth as personal preference. Scripture defines truth as God's reality. Then comes the breastplate or armor. It protected the heart and vital organ organs. Paul connects this with righteousness. There are two kinds every Christian should understand. One, justification, which means Christ's righteousness has been credited to us. Because of Jesus, believers stand fully accepted before God, and this never changes. The second one is sanctification. It's the lifelong process of becoming more like Jesus. We don't pursue holiness to earn acceptance. We pursue holiness because we already belong to Him. Isaiah 59 describes God Himself wearing righteousness like a breastplate. Paul is showing that believers are clothed with what belongs to God because of Christ. And I've heard that some people have read this and only associated the imagery of the armor of God with the Roman soldiers that were likely right in front of Paul as he was writing this letter. And I'm sure that was part of it. But it was deeper than that because Paul was also referencing the Old Testament and referencing Isaiah 59, which we mentioned here. And really excited because at the end of our series, I'm going to do a few epilogue episodes before we jump into the next book. And one of them is going to be diving deeper into Isaiah and the armor of God from that point of view. Okay, before we end today, just remember justification and sanctification. Both of those are our armor and the belt of truth. Now, justification refers to God's declaration that sinners are righteous through faith in Christ. And it never changes. Sanctification is the lifelong work of the Holy Spirit making us more like Jesus. Let's end with our reflection question today. What truth from Scripture has anchored you during a difficult season?
