Vuyanzi

Hey, Kisses from Kenya is produced by Democrats Abroad Kenya, but everything you hear in this podcast reflects our personal perspectives. As Americans living in Kenya.

Brendan

Yes. Nothing we say should be taken as the official stance of Democrats Abroad Kenya, Democrats Abroad Global, or the Democratic Party. And this is an entertainment space and not an official policy platform.

Vuyanzi

Thank you. No, what do you want to start with? You can start with that. Have you gotten food poisoning before? Never. Never. I haven't. Knock on, I'm knocking on the wood. Nope. My stomach is strong.

Brendan

Um might not always come out in the nicest fashion, but I don't like the thing is I think I probably have like a couple of times, but did you vomit? I've like almost I don't think I've almost never gotten like throw up kind of food poisoning. Like I've gotten the shits for sure.

Vuyanzi

Yeah, but does shits count as food poisoning? Because I I I had the shits for the first full year that I lived here.

Brendan

No, I definitely had one where like there was I for there was a time where it was so bad that it was like I like was shitting myself like in my sleep. Oh and it was like pure, like you, it was like watery. Like I thought I had cholera. Like it was to the point that like my doctor was like, I think you have cholera. She was like, if it looks like rice water, it's cholera. I'm like you have to wear diapers. No, but I was like, I had to like wear like three pairs of underwear because I didn't want to soak through the cheese. Oh god.

Vuyanzi

Oh, that is so fucking gross. I was I know. I was okay.

Brendan

Continue talking about your shirt combo.

Vuyanzi

But I'm I I'm Vuyanzi and I had an explosive stomach for the first year that I lived here.

Brendan

And I'm Brendan and I have uh explosives to make every other week. It don't stop me from going back for seconds, though.

Vuyanzi

Oh, that reminds me. I'd love to go to that place that had those good, oh God, it had those good um like cookies or something that you had here. And um it's a place near near the Yaya Mall.

Brendan

And it's like a little Oh, you're talking about the um Sudanese place, that my little Sudanese.

Vuyanzi

Yes. Are you still well okay? Is he still in your life?

Brendan

Occasionally.

Vuyanzi

Oh, okay. Okay. But I want to go back there.

Brendan

That was another one that was like in front of the homies camera. He would just bring them over.

Vuyanzi

You know what? I just wanted to say this about that. Like, we're laughing at that. However, okay, you know, I'm always kind of um how I talk about things. I don't talk about things directly. I'm gonna do my best to explain the story is that I had an experience with. They went a train on you. No, they didn't run a train on you. What is that?

Brendan

What is behind you? What is it for you?

Vuyanzi

I've never been Eiffel Towered. It was just a simple one-on-one experience that was so good that I told one of my friends about it. And I said to her, I said to her, if you did not, if you did not have a man, this is the type of guy I'd say, please do something so that you can experience the same thing, and then we can talk about it because it was great. Let's just say his tongue moves.

Brendan

So you were you were the one that did the pass off.

Vuyanzi

I did, I wanted to do a pass-off, and she would have been the only friend that I could do the pass-off with, but she has a man and she's um faithful. So what are you gonna do about that?

Brendan

Go on, take her on a girl's trip and have him pass by the roof.

Vuyanzi

Yo, it was like that. I was like, dude, this if you experienced this, we'd be talking about this right now over our cocktails.

Brendan

Okay, sorry. Um how did we get to that from explosive diarrhea though? Because in my experience, explosive diarrhea pre-speaking it like preempts my ability to have an Eiffel Tower situation.

Vuyanzi

Okay, because then from there we talked about the food, and then I was like, I want to go back to that Sudanese place. Oh, yeah. And you were like, oh, that's my Sudanese boo. Yes, and pass around, and then that's how we got here. Lord have mercy. Um, oh, I don't know what we're gonna talk about in the news because I think we already dove into that one already. Elena. Yeah, we already talked about her and her pomade hair. That we love that was just an incidental mention. We can talk about it some more if you want to. No, I don't, I just want to remind people that Trump sucks and that if you don't effing vote, he's gonna be like, they're trying to do things.

Brendan

No, did you actually know? This isn't this has to do with what I see underneath here, but like, have you seen this thing about like they are circulating maps that have like Venezuela as like the 51st state?

Vuyanzi

You're lying.

Brendan

No, I'm like so for real.

Vuyanzi

What the fuck? Who's doing this? Why am I asking? Why am I asking? One of these white supporters is dumbass motherfucker. I'm tired. I'm tired. I'm tired.

Brendan

I mean, it's just but like that goes back to that whole thing that we were talking about in the last episode, right? The idea of like, are we the villain? It's like this is a very clear example of like, yes, we are the villain in this situation. We came, we have abducted your president.

Vuyanzi

Yes. Now we're gonna add you as a 51st state. With a puppet, probably a puppet government.

Brendan

I was gonna say that's the problem, is they're gonna put another fucking Jeff Landry in there. What if they actually talk about it? I was like, if you actually want to bring all these brown folk up in here, this might actually work in our favor in the long run.

Vuyanzi

I'm I'm tired. Maybe we should shift to more um pop culture news because I don't want to talk about this. Like, I'm so upset from the last podcast we just recorded. I need to end on a happier note. And let's talk about your girl, because we only mentioned it a bit last podcast because you said if there was a Janet Jackson movie, you'd go to see it. However, her rhythm nation was inducted into the rhythm nation. But wasn't that whole album just inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame?

Brendan

And she looked Which I have feelings about though, because I I told you, well, we we I know we've talked about this before. My my uh about my favorite Janet Jackson album. Haven't we talked about this? I told you that there's like a right answer, but it's complicated.

Vuyanzi

Well no, I don't think on the show. I don't think we've ever discussed this.

Brendan

Do I have dementia?

Vuyanzi

No, but you know, the problem is we talk about stuff also in between. So sometimes we're gonna have to hold the bigger.

Brendan

So you know you know how like, well, so I don't know if you're aware, but like, you know, at some point Twitter decided that Super Bowl Sunday was Janet Jackson Appreciation Day. Because you know, there was the whole thing with Justin Timberlands. And you know, about how like Nipplegate happened and like he was allowed to bounce back, but she it took her a long time. Oh, this is sounding familiar. Keep going. So we like I say we. Um we of Twitter decided, yeah, you know, because I refuse to call it by that other name. Um, we of Twitter decided that that would be Janet Jackson Appreciation Day. So it's like a day to like listen to Janet Jackson, talk about Janet Jackson and how much we appreciate her as a national treasure that she is. Oh my god. And so there's always the inevitable debate about like what is Janet Jackson's best album.

Vuyanzi

What is her best album?

Brendan

And I always tell people that my answer to it is complicated. Okay, because you think it's what I always tell people that there's what I think is her best album, and then there's what I think is my favorite album. And they're not necessarily the same album.

Vuyanzi

Okay, you tell.

Brendan

So I feel like her best album, like technically best, you know, most complex, like whatever like kind of measure you want to use is the velvet rope. But my favorite album is rhythmation.

Vuyanzi

Okay, hold on. Let's go back a second. Can you remind me what songs were on Velvet Velvet Rope? Was that when she had those slow songs? You don't know what she got. So let's go. Okay, and what about and also I don't want to stop just because who what was that? People who didn't know.

Brendan

That was on Velvet Rope 2. Yeah, but Velvet Rope was much slower.

Vuyanzi

Oh, that was the sensual one. I love Velvet Rope.

Brendan

Yeah, that was the one that like the cover had like the red background and she had the curly hair.

Vuyanzi

And that's where she had Shaza, this character from different worlds.

Brendan

I think that's the was the one that they were like he was wearing white, they were in the that was the one that had like really good like visuals, like all the music videos were so good. But like everyone remembers Rhythm Nation because of like the outfits and the dance breaks and the tour. And I don't I because my thing about Janet Jackson, so the reason that I will always ride hard for my girl, yeah, is that like I don't want to get canceled. Oh my gosh, okay. Yeah, but like there would be no Beyoncé if there was no Janet Jackson. Because Janet Jackson was like, even though even though Michael was the one who like started like the mega tour kind of idea, like Michael, like a lot of his tours, it was just him on the stage, like you know, and he was performing and he was doing all the things because like you said, he's not just a dancer. Yeah, but like Janet was the one who introduced, like we have like a like a branded kind of visual experience, you know, with like a set, and like all the dancers like in the different outfits, and like we're kind of recording the dances, and like the dance also reinforces the message of the song, and like so rhythmation, like that, like that's why everyone remembers that one because that was like where that kind of came to be. So I'm like, we wouldn't have like the cowboy carter tour, yeah, and the renaissance like those things wouldn't be the same to me that they are if she hadn't kind of paved the way up for like number one, like the like women can do that, yeah, yes, and be like showstoppers that like present this like experience.

Vuyanzi

And also, I mean, I think I do think like any you know Beyonce fan who would hear you say that understands that all of these performers, all of these artists stand on the shoulders of someone who went before them, right? At this juncture.

Brendan

Yeah, like there's no Britney Spears with Middle R.

Vuyanzi

Yeah, like you you have to acknowledge that.

Brendan

And and I that's why I have a problem with a certain fan base that will not be named because they are crazy and they do come for people. But you know who's the one with the unhinged fan? Because she unhanged too.

Vuyanzi

Can you say the letters or no? No, I'm scared. Don't say it. Don't you let you say it talk about after the code?

Brendan

Is she a coke for you? That one who I'm talking about. Okay. Yeah, you know who I'm talking about.

Vuyanzi

Good Lord. Yeah, yeah, okay.

Brendan

But like her her crazy ass fans, like they're the ones that'll be like, fuck those old bitches that blah blah blah. Like that, like disrespectful. That's why they all that's why they're all trapped in like a spiritual vortex.

Vuyanzi

Jesus. Well, but I okay, so here is my um maybe I said this too when we talked about Janet Jackson, but I'm not crazy about Rhythm Nation. Even when it was out, I wasn't really crazy about it. Uh Velvet Road was more of my yeah, I know. And I used to just pretend because I just I remember this. I remember this because everyone was like Rhythm Nation. To be clear, I'm sorry. So sorry.

Brendan

To be clear, I don't think that the Rhythm Nation song is the best song on the album. But it sounded really like garbage paley. I like Escapaya.

Vuyanzi

Oh, when she's let's no. That's my album. That's a rhythm nation.

Brendan

I am 100% positive. It's not on Velvet Rope, which is cute in her little shorts. I'm 100% positive.

Vuyanzi

Come on, baby.

Brendan

Let's go.

Vuyanzi

Which was so cute in her little things.

Brendan

Okay, fine. No, because the backup vocals are much closer to rhythm nation sound than they are to Velvet, because Velvet Rope is almost like a singer-songwriter album.

Vuyanzi

Yeah, it's beautiful. Now I think I have to listen to Velvet Rope though when I go home. Um, okay, so that's good. Because I didn't want to talk about any more politics, did I? Because I'm like, I'm so freaking done. Um, so what is lost in translation for you? So this was so like so how did this even come up?

Brendan

So, like one of my girlfriends who is like she uh has published a novel that I edited for her.

Vuyanzi

Nice. Um I'd love to be with such a smart person on the podcast. Uh huh.

Brendan

So she is like in a fight with Amazon about um like her royalties or something like that. They've locked them up in some bullshit. Um she she specifically used the terminology super Karen. Super Karen to refer to me because I was like, have you so here's what happened. So she's like telling me about these struggles that she's having, right? And how she's like kind of like stuck in one of those like death loops where it's like she sends the message, they're like giving her the automated response. She's like, Let me speak to the manager. The manager repeats the same canned response. Yeah, they close the conversation because they're like, All right, we've sorted your issue.

Vuyanzi

Like, right, oh please.

Brendan

So she's like trapped in this like loop. And I was like, okay, well, like here's what you need to do email Jeff at like Amazon.com or whatever. Like, because so Jeff Bezos has like a public-facing email address. And she was like, Great, like, can I reference you like as like a as my referral? Who is Jeff and what is Jeff do? And I was like, Jeff is Jeff Bezos. And she was like, What? And I was like, no, I was like, especially with like American companies, like I was like, this is what you can do. Like you email the CEO of public-facing email, and even if it well, sometimes it is them that reads it, but often it's like a member of their team. Right. But it's a way that you can like they will route the thing to someone who actually knows what they're doing and can fix it. Yeah. You know, you basically skip like low-level management and you get to like middle or upper level management faster. And she was like, That's such like a super carrot move. Like, I'm gonna email the CEO of Amazon. His name is just so funny because like I I think because, like, you know, in Kenya, it's like, you know, CEOs and executives are so like kind of like almost like mystical. Yeah, yeah. They're like this. They're like insulated from everyone so far. Yeah, yeah.

Vuyanzi

That hierarchy is.

Brendan

The idea that it's like, no, like to us as Americans, it's like, let me speak to the manager.

Vuyanzi

And who's the manager? Who's his manager? That is so. Are we the villains? Okay, super Karen. Uh it'd be getting shit sorted out. Yeah, you we do.

Brendan

With the with the business bomb.

Vuyanzi

Jeez, what not the business bomb?

Brendan

Oh, I just imagine myself coming in with like the in a winter bomb.

Vuyanzi

Like Anderson Pac wears that bomb sometimes too, and it makes me like when he's singing. I mean, he's just with his wig. I'm down with his wig too.

Brendan

What's your lost in translation?

Vuyanzi

Let me make sure this is a recording because I'm having like a why are you thinking we're not recording?

Brendan

No, that's okay.

Vuyanzi

Jeez, can you oh I would have cried. Oh, we would have done we wouldn't have done it. But like, rewind it. We are put up. Okay, I mean, mine is just that right now, my there is something getting lost here since I've been here, and that was my cooking skills. Because before I left Pierremont to New York, shout out to Piermont, before I left Piermont, I used to cook every night. I had some great fish and nice recipes. Oh, I used to be cooking for myself. I own I live by myself. And now that I came here and there's support in a household that for me, because my household is small and I'm pretty minimalistic, she can cook and really spend only four hours at my house and clean, cooked, cooked, and cleaned. And so now I find myself not knowing anything. Like, I mean, I know I have to know something, but it's just like what we we were so y'all, we were toying with the idea of doing a cooking lesson on the podcast.

Brendan

Because your boy likes to cook. And I like to eat. She likes to eat my food, I will say.

Vuyanzi

Yes, I love it.

Brendan

It doesn't matter what I sling out of here. She's like, great. I'm ready.

Vuyanzi

I'm ready.

Brendan

Everyone else might be struggling because it's full of pepper, but she almost hot in, hot out.

Vuyanzi

I'm talking about explosion. But that burns, by the way. Um, so you guys, we want to hear from you. So would y'all be in class like while we're chatting it up?

Brendan

We can hear like, I don't know. We'd have to think what we'd make though. Chicken and dumplings.

Vuyanzi

Something. Well, you can think about that.

Brendan

I mean, think about those chicken and dumplings.

Vuyanzi

I mean, yeah, yeah. And and maybe, oh, and I like this too. Okay, we're asking them about what we should, you know, if you guys would like that idea. But also remember, Brendan does this wonderful thing each month called Sunday dinner, and he cooks. But like, challenge him to cook something like good. Don't be coming up with some casserole potato salad, weird shit with peanuts and raisins in it. Not that.

Brendan

I was gonna say though, like, don't come for casseroles, though, because some casseroles are real fucking good. Yeah, okay, but that's like the one place the white people be in their bag when it comes to cookies. Because you know, mix all this cheese and like potatoes and shit together and bake it till it's bubbling. Like hot chip, but then it's like, once you put it on the table, they're like, okay.

Vuyanzi

First of all, I eat all that white chip because I'm some fucking witchcrackers to go on the top. I ate all that because Pierremont was like all my, you know, when my white friends invited me over, I was eating whatever.

Brendan

It might be hot and hot out. Or maybe nothing out because now you're full of dairy, but you're stuck.

Vuyanzi

You are stuck.

Brendan

Maybe you, but uh, I don't have those problems.

Vuyanzi

God, because you know what? Hello, hello, hello. All right, what is your joy? Your queer.

Brendan

Anyway, if you if you have recipes you'd like us to try. For Sunday dinner, though, specifically? So you're gonna leave the digestive health of our friend group up to strangers on the internet. Absolutely.

Vuyanzi

Absolutely.

Brendan

Have you informed the friend group of this? Oh, I still need to make the WhatsApp group to write. Yes. And add them to the email.

Vuyanzi

Yes, because uh we have, it's almost like you only sent the invitation to me. Like it's reoccurring on my camera.

Brendan

No, I need to add everyone else. Like you forget.

Vuyanzi

And tell them they have to actually respond. Are you okay? Jeez, don't melt down. We still have Joy. I need a personal assistant. Oh, okay. I I well, okay, Joy. Do you want to talk about Joyce?

Brendan

Joy. No, you get to go first.

Vuyanzi

No, yo, I don't even know. I put I put an accident on the on the notes. I didn't realize I put a repeat by accident. So I gotta actually think about my black joy. Oh my god. I just read this for the first time right now while I'm sitting here. Holy, you better be careful with this one. You better be careful. Jesus.

Brendan

Okay, go ahead. Well I guess, but you see, I switched it up last time because I said they can't all be about bedroom activity. No, they can't. Two out of three is fine.

Vuyanzi

Yeah. Yes. Go ahead. Inquiring minds when inquiring minds one.

Brendan

So recently, y'all. I'm I'm almost positive he'll never watch this.

Vuyanzi

Um almost isn't good enough.

Brendan

So recently, y'all, I had an encounter. A closed encounter. Of the third kind. Of the bedroom kind.

Vuyanzi

Oh my gosh. Oh my god.

Brendan

And like, not to go too far into detail, but there was some point where we're holding hands for the podcast. I was I was we're fingering you. I was sitting astride this mare.

Vuyanzi

Holy smoke. Okay. Keep going. That's what you said. I'm like looking at that. That's what he said.

Brendan

Don't stop.

Vuyanzi

Um go ahead. Were you a part of the resignation? Sorry. Oh gosh. Okay, okay, go ahead.

Brendan

He did take me for an escapade. Oh what were I talking about?

Vuyanzi

That you didn't want to stop just a bit.

Brendan

So I looked down at him and I was just like, you know, you know, like when the spirit comes upon me, I just think which spirit is it? It depends on the day. Um which voice is speaking today. Um so I was just looking at him and I was like, what do you do? Oh you didn't know. Oh go ahead. And then I was like, are you in government? Like something just like the ancestors put it on my spirit. Oh no. And he was like, How did you know? Oh, so I'm writing my tax dollars right now.

Vuyanzi

What? What is he saying?

Brendan

He just started laughing. And he was like, pretty much.

Vuyanzi

Oh my.

Brendan

And I was like, well, I need to get you to come here more often so I can recoup more. Yo.

Vuyanzi

Yo.

Brendan

It was just so funny.

Vuyanzi

That's definitely some joy right there.

Brendan

But what really brought me joy. At one point, he like requested that we add another person to the equation. What is it with these people that you're with that? They're always bringing more people into the equation. Just like bring a plus one. Is it just like tattooed on my forehead? I think so. No one's ever only one person. It was kind of cute. It was very like a little bit cute, flattering, funny. Yeah. Um he was like, I feel like I'm just like suggesting this because like I'm trying to like stop like the feelings that I'm developing.

Vuyanzi

Oh, oh. It was good like that. And I was like, oh shit. What?

unknown

Oh.

Vuyanzi

Yo, I don't even, I have nothing to say. I have nothing to say. What?

Brendan

I don't know. I don't know. I don't know what I'd be doing to these men.

Vuyanzi

I don't know, but I'm not doing it because I can have an opposite story where I spent a whole weekend and I had a joyful weekend with this beautiful man.

Brendan

Wait, is this your black joy?

Vuyanzi

Well, it was her joy that turned into pain and joy and pain.

Brendan

God, thank you for sunshine. Thank you for rain. It was a lot of rain. Thank you for pain. It's a beautiful day.

Vuyanzi

Oh my gosh. Let me tell it was a whole weekend with the gentleman just a few weeks ago, a couple weeks ago. Um which friends? I didn't. It was the man who apparently some dude friends that I have know him and hang out with him, but I didn't know there was any connection. Because you know, there's only one to two degrees of separation in this little city of ours. I spent the whole weekend with him. It was beautiful.

Brendan

Yeah, it was insane.

Vuyanzi

I thought that was. That was late as later. I fell in, I felt we were laid up and I felt like.

Brendan

He gave you those Miami strokes.

Vuyanzi

No, actually, okay. I don't know how much I should say on this podcast because I'm starting to sweat right now. But let's just say That's what she said. No, no, no, no, no, no, no. There weren't strokes, but there was a lot of oral exam? Stop!

Brendan

I'm not saying he gave you a tongue lasher.

Vuyanzi

I'm sweating. You see the sweat on the side.

Brendan

She's sweating because she's remembering.

Vuyanzi

It was such a good weekend.

Brendan

She's remembering the oral exposition.

Vuyanzi

Listen, I just will say I fell in love with that man. I fell in love. I thought I was gonna make him.

Brendan

He gave you the sugary treatment.

Vuyanzi

What? And then afterwards, he's three days later, he's gone with the wind. And then I find out a week later that he knows some friends of mine that he they're like, oh, that guy is a really good guy. I'm like, no, he's not. No, he's not. He's a terrible human being who totally left me high and dry. Well, not dry. Listen in this podcast. Do you see the sweat on my face right now? I think she's glistening, y'all.

Brendan

So if you two would like to make VMZ sweat just like this, our DMs are open. And so are my legs. Just kidding. She says this every time, but yet every time two weeks later, it's like, let me tell you about someone who turned me into a spurter.

Vuyanzi

After today's episode, you will be the only hoe on the show.

Brendan

This remains to be seen y'all.

Vuyanzi

Quick, let's close the show. I can't take it in.

Brendan

Just a reminder that if you are listening on your favorite podcast platform, you can also see us and our beautiful faces on YouTube.

Vuyanzi

Well, my family disowned me for these things.

Brendan

You're watching on YouTube.

Vuyanzi

My kids don't watch the show. You already know my daddy watches because he pays for it. So my kids, my family, what will they do?

Brendan

If you are watching on the YouTube, we are on BuzzSprout, which means we are distributed on every platform. Yes. Pretty much that you can think of. Yes. I even added us to iHeart, formerly known as iHeartRadio. What is it called now? iHeart.

Vuyanzi

Oh, oh, iHeartRadio. We're on iHeartRadio, yeah. It's just iHeart now. Okay, fine. We're on iHeart now. Yeah. But did you tell them they could subs that they can subscribe and pay money a little bit?

Brendan

If you find us on BuzzSprout, you can subscribe.

Vuyanzi

Yeah, why not? You're enjoying this. You're laughing at the video.

Brendan

So give us a little few dollars a month. Yeah. Your few dollars will go a long way to at least making sure that we don't have to pay for the hosting.

Vuyanzi

Yeah, yeah.

Brendan

And Buzzsprout now has added they can do video distribution because there's video podcasts on Apple, but you have to pay for the next tier.

Vuyanzi

So is that what it oh, I I that's why I get it automatically. I didn't know you had to pay. I just get it.

Brendan

You just get what?

Vuyanzi

Because I pay for Apple.

Brendan

No, I'm saying on Buzzsprout.

Vuyanzi

Oh, we have to add, oh, we have to add a oh, oh. But I did see the the thing that there's video, but I don't know. What's the the whole point of a podcast is to listen to it while you're on the go. But some people like to watch. Then go to the show. Don't you like to watch? I've never done that before, by the way.
