SPEAKER_00So stupid. Hear the music. I'm Ian, your GM. Today we'll be listening to a how-to-play training hallucination prepared for the crew of a ship called the New Horizons. Without further ado. Welcome to New Horizons, a science core blazer set to voyage out beyond the known edges of the Imperium. With any luck, you could help prove once and for all that the Saperna truly exists. This training hallucination will serve to teach you how to get by in your long journey to the sea sky. And counts towards your annual HR requirement. I'm Dr. Galactic McCouga Buddy, or GM for short. What are my credentials, you might ask? Haha! I was created in the lab and born a doctor. Isn't that fun? The Empyrean is a dangerous place. In addition to all the knowledge one might require to get by, like arithmetic in basic facts, an intuition of physics is essential. Just remember the acronym Dual Action Get Good Emotional Hope slash fear results. Or Daggerheart for short. What a mouthful! We're working with corporate on that one. Joining me in this training experience is one Spacey Stacy. Spacey, say hello. Hey. And a Mr. Charlie Fontaine. Introduce yourself, Charlie. Hi everybody! Well, weird. Now, any GM worth his weight in Galactic Salt would give Spacey a chance to describe her surroundings. Spacey, you find yourself on New Horizons. What do you see around you?
SPEAKER_01Uh so I'm in a room with like this cozy looking couch with pillows. And uh like there's some books, as if like people still read those or anything, but um a table and uh some chairs at the table, I guess so people could like eat there and stuff.
SPEAKER_00Fantastic, Stacy. It sounds like you're describing a lounge. Yeah, I guess that is where I'm at. You did miss one important detail. Well, what did I miss? You're being attacked by a cosmic bear. Oh my! The bear charges you from across the room. What do you do?
SPEAKER_01Uh I'm gonna play dead.
SPEAKER_00That's spectacular. Now, Spacey, you may never have thought about it before, but you have access to certain traits. What trait would you use to try to convince the bear that you're dead? Remember, you have six core character traits agility, strength, finesse, instinct, presence, and knowledge. Or for short, by the sea sky, that's even worse than the last acronym. Somebody a corporate really needs to lay off the glue.
SPEAKER_01Uh maybe strafe?
SPEAKER_00Oh, my sweet, sweet spacey stacy. That's not right at all. You'd use presence. Now, do you have anything, perhaps an experience in your life that might help you play dead to this cosmic bear charging across the room, tearing everything in its path, and looking at you with its beautiful cosmic eye? Experiences are drawn from those defining moments in your life that help to shape who you are and the way you approach many situations. In this case, perhaps something like raised by bears, or amateur therspian? If so, you can spend a hope to add plus two to your role, increasing your chance to succeed. Uh playing dead? Wow! How convenient! Now, give me a roll. You'll roll two twelve-sided die, commonly called D12s, and add the results together along with your trade score. Don't forget to mark a hope off on your sheet to get an additional plus two. You'll notice the d12s are two different colors. Let me know the color of the die that rolls the highest.
SPEAKER_01Uh, I got uh a 9, but like the yellow die is a higher number than the purple die.
SPEAKER_00Well, it sounds like you rolled with hope. Hope is a resource that helps fuel certain character abilities. Like that experience you just used. And that's good. Go ahead and mark a hope on your character sheet. Okay. But you rolled a nine, and that's bad. You fail! The cosmic bear flips a table, bears over top of you, drips saliva from its moth onto your face before raking a claw across your chest. Oh no. Indeed! You are dealt twelve damage. Remember to compare that damage to your damage thresholds to see how many hit points you should mark off. One hit point for minor damage, two hit points for major damage, and three hit points for severe damage. Judging by the size of that bear's paw, I'm guessing you'll take severe damage.
SPEAKER_01Uh, do I have any like armor or something?
SPEAKER_00Yes, you do! And that brings me to today's sponsor, the Blazer's Best brand Blazer Gambison. It's the jumpsuit you love to loot from Adventurers, but you don't have to anymore because it's on sale at Blazer's Best. Mark a point of armor to reduce your damage. With your Blazer Gambison, your major damage threshold is seven and your severe damage threshold is 18. You would normally be dealt a major wound or two damage, but you reduced it by one by using your armor. So mark one HP on your character sheet. Remember to also mark one of your Gambison's four armor slots. Okay. Now, this is an important abstraction, but remember that if your HP is all marked totally, you will die. Or at least have a chance to die. Do you understand, Spacey? Uh I think so. Fantastic. Charlie, you're across the room. What were you doing when the bear began to ransack?
SPEAKER_02Uh I I don't wanna play this anymore. Is she gonna be okay to bear just bitter?
SPEAKER_00Now's not the time to panic. Your friend is going to die if you don't act.
SPEAKER_02Oh no! I uh I throw a book at the bear!
SPEAKER_00Oh, fantastic. Now, what trick do you think would be associated with throwing a book? Uh presents? No, you simplet. It would be agility. Give me a roll with agility.
SPEAKER_02Okay! Uh I've got a uh a 17, I got a seven and a ten! But the purple die is higher, it's the ten.
SPEAKER_00Oh, well, again, mixed news there, friends. Because with 17, that book definitely hits that bear. Yes, and you deal some damage. Let's roll some damage. How much damage did you do? Uh, it says Oh, fantastic. That's barely any damage, but it does still deal one wound to the bear, and you will mark one HP. Now, the purple die was higher, you said. Uh-huh. That means you are filled with fear. Oh! Do you feel the fear, Charlie? It suffuses you. And it gives a resource to the GM to spend to heighten the tension of the game. I will take that fear. Now, because you rolled with fear, the GM gets to go again. I will take the cosmic bear, he will wheel around, and now he will attack Charlie. Charlie, the bear fits most of your head in his mouth.
unknownNo!
SPEAKER_00Indeed. Charlie, when the bear attacks you, I rolled a 17. Does a 17 beat your evasion? It's an 11! Oh, sweet Charlie, you take 26 points of damage. Oh no! Such a severe damage threshold is uh nice crisp 19. You'll take three points. Do you have any armor, Charlie? Uh, let me look on my sheet. Uh it says I'm wearing a schoolboy's uniform. Ah, bad luck, Charlie. That doesn't provide you any armor slots. You just take the three damage.
unknownOh no!
SPEAKER_00What's worse, I'm gonna spend that fear I got, and the bear's going to look deep into your mind with the eye that's deep inside its mouth. Do you see the eye, Charlie? It's the only thing I can see! Indeed. It advanced itself in your most favorite childhood memories. Now every childhood memory you have will permanently have the cosmic bear in them.
SPEAKER_02Why are you doing this to me?
SPEAKER_00Mark a stress on your character sheet. Stress is another resource distinct from hit points. Stress represents strain, fatigue, or well, stress, you dummy! Remember, if you ever mark all of your stress, you become vulnerable, and any additional stress you take will be marked as HP. Do you understand, Charlie? No, but I am feeling vulnerable! Fantastic. Well, I as the GM are now out of things I can do, and it's back to the players. You'll decide amongst yourselves who you'd like to go. So who would like to take the next action? Uh I'll go. Fantastic. What do you do, Spacey?
SPEAKER_01Uh, I'm gonna punch it in his eye.
SPEAKER_00Great. What drink do you use for that?
SPEAKER_01Uh now is time for strength.
SPEAKER_00That's right, Spacey Stacy. You learn fast. Go ahead and give me a roll with that strength. And do you have any experiences that might help with this? Uh decorative fruit bowler ranger? Wow. That is a fantastic experience. Unfortunately, the bear's eye is not made of fruit. That doesn't apply, and you'll just have to roll it straight. Okay.
SPEAKER_01Um, I got a 20 this time, and uh, the yellow is higher than a purple die.
SPEAKER_00Aw, fantastic, Spacey Stacy. That is a success with hope. You damage the bear, and you get that delicious hope to spend on a roll later on. Yay! Now roll me that damage. What did you get, Spacey? Uh, I got an eleven. Eleven damage. Spectacular. That's going to deal two wounds the bear as it beats his major damage threshold. Now, it turns out this bear only happened to have three HP. He's a pretty weak bear. You know, being cosmic and all. And it dies. So we're saved? Indeed, you're saved.
unknownHoy!
SPEAKER_00You both stand there, keeping, and quite injured. What do you do next? Uh oh.
SPEAKER_02I'm bleeding pretty bad. I I remember reading in the manual that there's first eight kids in every bathroom. I gotta go bathroom! Come on, Stacy!
SPEAKER_00Fantastic, Charlie. Reading the manual on your first day, this guy's gonna make captain. So, you go into the bathroom. It's a cramped stall, only designed for one person, but you both pack in because you're determined. You find the first eight kit on the wall. Now what do you do, Charlie?
SPEAKER_02Uh I got a bandage! My bleeding head!
SPEAKER_01Uh, can I like help him or whatever? Like, I mean, that would be hard to do by yourself, right?
SPEAKER_00Please help! That is a fantastic idea, Spacey. So, what's going to happen is, Spacey, you will spend the hope and narrate how you help.
SPEAKER_01Uh, I'm gonna help him out, uh, with wrapping the bandage around his head because his hands are really shaky.
SPEAKER_00His hands are shaky, Spacey Stacy. Go ahead and mock that hope off, and indeed, we'll add a d6 to the roll. Because by helping out Charlie, you're giving him advantage. Charlie, you'll make a roll. This time let's call it uh finesse to use the first aid kit. What do you think? Uh but my finesse is only a zero! Oh, Charlie, who needs a plus to the finesse when you have advantage? Go ahead and give me a roll. I got a four. Oh, Charlie, even with the help of Advantage. And was that with a hope or a fear, my friend?
unknownIt's it's with a fear.
SPEAKER_00Oh, bad luck. Well, while trying to bandage your head, you accidentally start a fire in the toilet. What that's right, Charlie. A toilet fire. And remember you said you read the manual, so you know exactly what to do.
SPEAKER_02Oh, that's right. Uh page 14, section B, it says flush vigorously. It's why flush vigorously. Hurry, Charlie, hurley, give me a roll. I flush it, I flush it. Oh no, I got two. It's two ones.
SPEAKER_00Two ones, Charlie. This isn't bad news. It's the best news. Whenever the dice match numbers, you have a critical success. Oh, wow, really? That's right, Charlie. I need you to clear a stress, and you gain a hope. Oh wow, I feel so hopeful. And best of all, that toilet is no longer on fire. I'm not gonna get fired on my first day. Oh, Charlie. No, you will not. And Spacey, you did a good job as well. Oh, thanks. Thanks, Spacey. There are, of course, uh a few more rules to follow, but I think that's enough to get us started. What do you two think? Yeah, I think this was pretty good. I don't ever want to see you again! Oh, you probably won't. Our species is very short-lived. And with that, I want to thank you for listening and tune in for the next installment of How to Get By in the Imperium. And with that, we're gonna end the session.
