Description: Binary code and human bone: the intersection where the future of our species is being rewritten.

Binary and Bone is an intellectually rigorous, off-beat science fiction drama that explores the dark ethics of human optimization. Written by actual human and practicing physician Gary Pepper, M.D., this highly original series balances atmospheric world-building with an edgy, scientifically plausible look at a future that is closer than you think.

In this episode: A routine day at a South Bronx hospital turns grotesque when an autopsy report exposes the true cost of human arrogance. A toddler, genetically engineered by back-alley "cowboys" to be a designer athlete, arrives in total cardiac arrest. Without a myostatin genetic brake pedal, his heart muscle grew unchecked—choking itself to death from the inside out.

As the rogue clinic vanishes into the digital ether, Dr. Benny Spritzer steps out into the cold New York evening. His mind is racing against his own failing health, entirely unaware that events inside his own home are about to draw him deeper into a web of genetic manipulation he never conceived of.

 The year is 2035.

[00:00:02:19 - 00:00:09:20]
Narrator
In the underfunded corridors of the Bronx Charity Hospital, medicine isn't just a practice. It's an evolutionary trench war.

[00:00:10:23 - 00:00:21:10]
Narrator
While the ultra-wealthy, by unregulated, black-market, genetic perfection overseas, the public sector is left to rot under the weight of ancient, reawakened scourges.

[00:00:22:21 - 00:00:31:21]
Narrator
Dr. Benny Spritzer is a man trapped between these two worlds, navigating a crumbling medical system while quietly tracking the ticking clock of his own failing heart.

But today, the clinical routine is shattered. Dr. Dimitrov Garcia has just returned from a mortality conference with an autopsy report that exposes the true, grotesque cost of human arrogance.

[00:00:49:12 - 00:00:59:15]
Dr. Dimitrov Garcia
Can you believe this? These damn criminals just murdered a poor, innocent child. And whose hands is the blood on? No one, it seems. Not a single soul.

[00:00:59:15 - 00:01:03:09]
Maryliss, Lab Director
Dr. G, slow down. Take a breath.

[00:01:04:10 - 00:01:07:09]
Maryliss, Lab Director
What child? What happened at the M&M conference?

[00:01:07:09 - 00:01:28:11]
Dr. Dimitrov Garcia
A toddler, Merylis. They called him Rico, barely three years old, brought into our ER in total cardiac arrest, dead before the house staff could even get a central line into him. And why? Because some back-alley genetic cowboys in an unregulated offshore clinic decided to play God with a viral vector.

[00:01:28:11 - 00:01:34:02]
Dr. Benny Spritzer
A genetic procedure on a three-year-old? For God's sake, what were they trying to cure?

[00:01:35:03 - 00:01:47:20]
Dr. Dimitrov Garcia
Cure? They weren't curing a damn thing. They were enhancing. They used a crude, unshielded, CRISPR delivery system to completely knock out the child's myostatin gene. The muscle regulator gene.

[00:01:47:20 - 00:01:50:18]
Maryliss, Lab Director
The one that determines how much muscle you have?

[00:01:50:18 - 00:02:13:09]
Dr. Dimitrov Garcia
Exactly. A brake pedal. The parents wanted a superbaby. A designer athlete built from the cradle. They deleted the gene so his skeletal muscles would grow unchecked. And it worked. The autopsy photos showed an infant with the definition of a professional bodybuilder. It was grotesque, Merylis. It was a monster in diapers.

[00:02:13:09 - 00:02:19:02]
Maryliss, Lab Director
Then what killed him? If the skeletal muscles were firing, how did his system go into arrest?

[00:02:19:02 - 00:02:38:15]
Dr. Dimitrov Garcia
Because those arrogant fools failed to account for the fact that the heart is a muscle too. The viral vector didn't stay localized in the limbs. It leaked into the rest of the body. The heart muscle took up the genetic modification. And without the myostatin brake pedal, the cardiac walls just kept thickening.

[00:02:38:15 - 00:02:53:17]
Dr. Benny Spritzer
I get it. Hypotrophic cardiomyopathy. The left ventricle became so muscle-bound, so thick, that there was no volume left for blood to actually fill the chamber. The poor kid's heart literally choked itself to death from the inside out.

[00:02:53:17 - 00:02:54:23]
Dr. Dimitrov Garcia
 Exactly.

[00:02:54:23 - 00:02:58:19]
Dr. Benny Spritzer
And the people who administered the injection? The clinic?

[00:02:58:19 - 00:03:11:11]
Dr. Dimitrov Garcia
As you might expect, Benny. Vanished into the digital ether. The website is offline. The paper trail leads to a shell company in a European tax haven. And the local authorities have no jurisdiction.

[00:03:12:15 - 00:03:19:14]
Dr. Dimitrov Garcia
The rogue scientists got their data. The parents got a tiny corpse. And the accountability just evaporates.

[00:03:20:17 - 00:03:26:09]
Dr. Benny Spritzer
It's a tragedy, Dimitrov. Arrogance always extracts its highest price from the helpless.

[00:03:27:21 - 00:03:37:00]
Dr. Benny Spritzer
Look, I have to get out of here exactly on time tonight. The Long Island Expressway is already going to be a parking lot, and I need to get home and prep for the procedure first thing in the morning.

[00:03:37:00 - 00:03:46:23]
Dr. Dimitrov Garcia
Right. Of course, Benny. Go. Your health comes first. We shouldn't be shouting about cardiac failure on the eve of your own evaluation anyway.

[00:03:46:23 - 00:03:59:09]
Dr. Benny Spritzer
Thanks. I'll pull the full sequencing data from the mortality repository when I get back. Let's catch up on the details of their vector failure tomorrow afternoon. Once Chitala clears me.

[00:03:59:09 - 00:04:04:18]
Maryliss, Lab Director
Good luck tomorrow, Benny. Don't worry about the bench. I'll take care of the polymerases.

[00:04:05:20 - 00:04:06:22]
Dr. Benny Spritzer
 Appreciate it, Marillis.

[00:04:07:23 - 00:04:08:21]
Dr. Benny Spritzer
 See you both tomorrow.

[00:04:10:12 - 00:04:57:16]
Narrator
The scientists get their data, the parents get a tiny corpse, and accountability evaporates into the legal ether. Leaving his colleagues to lock up the laboratory benches, Benny steps out into the cold New York evening, his mind racing against the looming shadow of tomorrow's ultrasound probe. He thinks he is merely fighting to survive the winter. As Benny drives home into the gathering New York gridlock, the image of a child's failing heart echoes in the dark. He believes tomorrow morning's diagnostic probe is the ultimate fork in his road. But a different design has already been set in motion. What Benny is entirely unaware of is that events about to unfold right inside his own home will draw him further into a world of genetic manipulation he has never conceived of.
