[00:00:00:07 - 00:00:05:08]
Narrator
The Long Island Expressway was a fractured river of crimson brake lights and broken asphalt.
[00:00:06:11 - 00:00:35:06]
Narrator
Unable to lock in autopilot mode due to the multiple road hazards, Benny manually directed his vehicle from behind the steering wheel. From time to time, he involuntarily peeked at the sleek carbon fiber passenger drones slipping effortlessly through the twilight sky. They carried their wealthy corporate passengers over the gridlock toward the secure Gold Coast Estates of the North Shore. Below them, the rest of the workforce sat trapped between orange construction cones and fender benders.
[00:00:36:15 - 00:00:44:12]
Narrator
Once inside his home, Benny was welcomed with a warm ambient glow helping him to forget how cramped and achy he was from the commute.
[00:00:45:13 - 00:00:52:19]
Narrator
The modern recessed smart lighting automatically shifted to a soft amber a programmed protocol designed to soothe his return.
[00:00:53:22 - 00:01:01:00]
Narrator
It was an unpretentious, comfortable sanctuary shielded by a manicured lawn from the chaos of both the hospital and the highway.
[00:01:02:05 - 00:01:09:06]
Narrator
When dinner was over and the kids had bolted upstairs, the day's tension finally began to bleed out of him, transforming into words.
[00:01:10:17 - 00:01:17:04]
Narrator
Elyse sat across from him, her eyes attentive and grave as she read the deep lines of chronic fatigue etched around his eyes.
[00:01:18:09 - 00:01:26:13]
Dr. Benny Spritzer
It's the constant pressure, Elyse. We're short three nurses on the floor. Administration is holding back capital funds for their replacement and the highway,
[00:01:27:14 - 00:01:28:03]
Dr. Benny Spritzer
the highway.
[00:01:29:09 - 00:01:30:08]
Dr. Benny Spritzer
Forget about it,
[00:01:30:08 - 00:01:33:07]
Narrator
Benny said, echoing his deeply missed ancestors.
[00:01:34:07 - 00:01:40:15]
Dr. Benny Spritzer
You just sit there, trapped, watching the drone commuters sail over your head like you're a lower class of citizen.
[00:01:42:01 - 00:01:48:15]
Elyse
You know that's not it, Benny. You're the one doing the real work down in the trenches. They're just flying over it.
[00:01:50:01 - 00:01:51:12]
Elyse
Did you have a rough day with the patients?
[00:01:52:22 - 00:02:05:11]
Narrator
Benny dropped his fork. His mind flashed briefly to Dr. Dimitrov Garcia's furious outburst in the lab over the offshore biohacking tragedy, but his thoughts settled on a more immediate, localized sorrow.
[00:02:06:15 - 00:02:15:17]
Dr. Benny Spritzer
It's the Foreman guy. You remember me talking about him, a construction foreman from Queens? His TB is surging and we can't seem to get it under control.
[00:02:16:18 - 00:02:20:03]
Dr. Benny Spritzer
The damage from his smoking makes his lungs a playland for the bug.
[00:02:21:05 - 00:02:38:03]
Dr. Benny Spritzer
Today, his insurance carrier denied his lung resurfacing procedure. They called it "investigational." "Investigational?" The man has three kids, Elyse. I had to sit in a room looking his wife in the eye, knowing an algorithm is putting a price tag on his head.
[00:02:39:08 - 00:02:41:11]
Dr. Benny Spritzer
Forget about it. Forget about it.
[00:02:41:11 - 00:02:55:19]
Narrator
Elyse opened her mouth to reply, her features softening with profound empathy, but her words were instantly severed by a sound from the floor above. It wasn't a scream of agony, but a high-pitched, childlike burst of pure fright and confusion.
[00:02:56:19 - 00:02:57:12]
Narrator
It was Brit.
[00:02:58:14 - 00:03:20:03]
Narrator
Benny and Elyse exchanged a sudden, breathless look. Instinct took over. Pushing their chairs back hard against the hardwood floor, the parents surged toward the hallway. The sudden movement sent a hot, dull ache radiating behind Benny's sternum, a sharp reminder of his own ticking clock. But he ignored it, taking the stairs two at a time with Elyse right on his heels.
[00:03:21:12 - 00:03:39:14]
Narrator
They burst into fourteen-year-old Axl's bedroom. Brit was standing near her brother's study desk, cradling her index finger tightly against her chest, her bottom lip trembling. On the desk sat Axl's prized possession, the heavy, dark mass of fossilized, paleozoic shale containing a trilobite fossil.
[00:03:41:02 - 00:03:44:22]
Elyse
Brit, sweetheart, what happened? Did you drop it? Let me see your hand.
[00:03:45:22 - 00:03:54:13]
Brit
I didn't drop it. I was hardly touching it and the rock went pop. There's a shiny needle inside. It poked me.
[00:03:55:18 - 00:04:01:14]
Narrator
Not seeing any blood, Benny stepped past them, his medical training narrowing his focus to the physical evidence.
[00:04:02:17 - 00:04:07:04]
Narrator
He leaned over the desk, pulling the desk lamp lower to flood the fractured shale with light.
[00:04:08:08 - 00:04:16:05]
Dr. Benny Spritzer
Did you see what happened, Axl?
Axl
No, Dad. I turned away for a second and heard Brit scream. I told her a bunch of times not to touch it.
[00:04:17:05 - 00:04:39:15]
Narrator
Axl looked directly at Brit as he spoke. Benny's breath hitched. Protruding from the dark prehistoric stone was a tiny, sharp, crystalline point. As Benny tilted his head, what he could see of the crystal seemed to defy the ambient light of the room, refracting a deep, multi-layered spectrum of violet and blue, colors that seemed to move with a faint luminescence.
[00:04:41:00 - 00:04:48:04]
Elyse
Benny, what is that? Is it glass? Look at her finger. I see a drop of blood. That fossil could be toxic.
[00:04:49:11 - 00:04:53:09]
Narrator
Axl brought his father a high-intensity penlight, and they both leaned in to look.
[00:04:54:10 - 00:05:01:11]
Narrator
Benny indicated with a hand wave that no one should touch it. Something within his scientific intuition told him to maintain his distance.
[00:05:02:13 - 00:05:09:03]
Narrator
Mesmerized by the shifting colors of the crystal, he sensed, not quite heard, a high-pitched ringing inside his ears.
[00:05:10:11 - 00:05:18:14]
Narrator
He swallowed hard in an effort to clear the distraction before forcing his voice into a calm, reassuring professional register to soothe his wife's panic.
[00:05:19:15 - 00:05:28:01]
Dr. Benny Spritzer
It's probably just a stray crystalline intrusion, honey. Quartz or pyrite can form inside shale nodules under intense pressure and take on strange shapes.
[00:05:29:01 - 00:05:31:09]
Dr. Benny Spritzer
Brit probably just caught the edge of a sharp facet.
[00:05:32:15 - 00:05:36:05]
Elyse
I don't like the look of it, Benny. Get rid of it. Put it in the garage.
[00:05:37:06 - 00:05:39:12]
Elyse
Axl shouldn't have something that sharp on his desk.
[00:05:40:15 - 00:05:41:12]
Narrator
It's fine, Elyse.
[00:05:42:14 - 00:05:47:19]
Narrator
Benny spoke gently, placing a hand on his wife's shoulder while downplaying his own growing fascination.
[00:05:49:03 - 00:05:57:00]
Dr. Benny Spritzer
Let's get Brit cleaned up, put the stary wand on that finger, and get the kids tucked in. I've got the TEE first thing in the morning, and I need to clear my head.
[00:05:58:00 - 00:06:03:16]
Dr. Benny Spritzer
Tell you what, tomorrow when I get home, Axl and I will take a much closer look at it. Right, Axl?
[00:06:04:20 - 00:06:07:00]
Narrator
Axl gave an enthusiastic nod of his head.
[00:06:07:00 - 00:06:10:08]
Axl
Don't worry, Mom. No one will be touching it anymore.
[00:06:10:08 - 00:06:23:03]
Narrator
This unexpected twist involving his precious fossil clearly intrigued him. Nobody was putting it in the garbage. He shot another disapproving look at his younger sister. Benny reached out and flicked off the desk lamp.
[00:06:24:06 - 00:06:31:12]
Narrator
Turning to take one last look, in the shadows of the bedroom, Benny noted the apex of the crystal seemed to hold a faint residual glint.
[00:06:32:23 - 00:07:10:18]
Narrator
Father and son were both major fans of ancient artifacts, fossils, minerals, and anything connected to a long vanished world. They were pumped to get to the bottom of this mysterious outcropping. Could it be something valuable? Benny mused to himself as he assisted his wife with Brit on the way to sterilize her tiny wound. A family seeking sanctuary from a chaotic world. A dedicated physician carrying the weight of a failing healthcare system along with the failing lungs of his patients. And now, to add to his concerns, a sharp glint of blue and violet light fracturing the quiet safety of his teenaged son's bedroom.
[00:07:12:02 - 00:07:19:16]
Narrator
Dr. Benny Spritzer still believes he is facing predictable life hurdles. But the prehistoric stone has just rewritten his reality.
[00:07:20:16 - 00:07:24:09]
Narrator
The countdown has begun, and the next few days could change everything.
[00:07:25:22 - 00:07:41:04]
