Welcome to A Place for Seniors Podcast,
In this special episode, host Allison Carman shares the deeply personal story that led her into senior care and explains why helping older adults find the right living environment has become her life's mission.
Before becoming a senior living expert, Allison built a successful career in engineering and business. But when the 2008 recession unexpectedly changed the direction of her life, it also created an opportunity she never saw coming.
It began with her own mother.
What first appeared to be simple forgetfulness gradually became something much more serious. Allison found herself stepping into the role so many adult children unexpectedly face becoming the primary caregiver for a parent living with dementia.
She candidly shares the emotional challenges that came with caring for her mother at home.
The stress.
The uncertainty.
The guilt.
And the heartbreaking realization that love alone is not always enough to provide the care someone truly needs.
Like many families, Allison believed bringing her mother home was the right answer. But through that experience, she discovered just how physically and emotionally overwhelming caregiving can become without the right support.
That difficult season ultimately introduced her to the world of senior living.
What started as helping a friend research care options soon led Allison to a career managing senior communities, where she witnessed something that completely changed her perspective.
She watched seniors come back to life.
People who had been isolated, struggling, or simply surviving at home began thriving once they had community, purpose, nutritious meals, social interaction, and immediate access to support.
Throughout this episode, Allison shares powerful real-life stories from the thousands of families she has helped over the years.
She explains why many seniors wait too long before exploring their options and why that delay often leads to unnecessary medical crises, caregiver burnout, and rushed decisions during emergencies.
You'll hear remarkable stories of seniors who initially resisted moving into a community only to discover renewed independence, friendships, confidence, and joy after making the transition.
Allison also explains why senior living is often misunderstood.
Many people assume moving into a community means losing independence.
In reality, the right community often gives seniors more independence, more freedom, and a better quality of life than they experienced while living alone.
This conversation also explores why planning ahead matters so much.
Allison discusses the warning signs families often overlook, the hidden dangers of isolation, the importance of quick emergency response during strokes and falls, and why waiting for a crisis usually limits the best available options.
Whether you're beginning to notice changes in an aging parent, considering independent living, assisted living, memory care, or simply wanting to prepare before a crisis occurs, this episode provides valuable insight that every family should hear.
Because the best decisions are almost always made before they're urgently needed.
