006: Navigating America as a Black Woman

Join the Blount County Democratic Women of Maryville, TN in elevating local women's voices and hearing their stories. As a belated celebration of Juneteenth, join Jennifer Coffin, treasurer of the local chapter of the NAACP, in addressing the day-to-day racism that Black women continue to face in America and analyzing the factors that cause members of other races to either turn a blind eye or overcompensate in response.

And the conversation we had at 58:02 was about Black feminist icon Gloria Jean Watkins who went by the pen name bell hooks and her work "Feminist Theory: From Margin to Center." Another good resource is the article "Through the Lens of Race: Black and White Women's Perceptions of Womanhood" by Professor Isis H. Settles, Jennifer S. Pratt-Hyatt, and Dr. NiCole T. Buchanan in a 2008 publication of Psychology of Women Quarterly. While their analyses do not align with Jennifer's experience, these women's expertise on intersectional feminism is well worth the study.
