In a world filled with competing voices, God has given you His Word and His Holy Spirit to help you recognize what is true. Through 1 John 4:1, you'll learn why every message should be tested and why the Holy Spirit always leads you deeper into the truth of Jesus Christ.

Welcome to the Yielded Mind's 50-day journey of reflection and renewal. My name is Eric Hayes, and this is your daily invitation to quiet the noise, yield your thoughts to the indwelling Holy Spirit, and allow Him to renew your mind through the truth of scripture. If you've not done so already, please download your free companion journal by visiting theyieldedmind.com and clicking The Journal. Doing so will best equip you to follow along as we walk through these 50 days together. Now, please pause and begin where every yielded mind begins, gratitude. In your journal, write down three things you're grateful for today. Consider sharing those gratefuls with someone you love, because gratitude shared strengthens both the one that gives thanks and the one that receives it. Now take a slow breath and prepare your heart for today's passage and teaching. Ask the Lord to make His word personal. Ask Him for revelation. Ask Him to expose all things that need to come under His authority. The yielded mind is formed through surrender. Open your heart. Open your journal. Open your mind to the indwelling Holy Spirit. Here is today's teaching. Welcome to day 10 of your 50 day journey of reflection and renewal. This week you're learning to recognize the conflict that takes place within every believer. You've discovered that the struggle between the spirit and the flesh is part of the Christian life and that not every thought deserves your agreement. Today you'll discover that not every voice deserves your trust. Today's lesson is called Testing What You Hear and today's scripture is from First John chapter four, verse one, and I'm reading from the ESV translation. Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God Let's consider what the Holy Spirit is teaching through this passage. John begins with a simple but important command: Do not believe every spirit. Why? Because not every voice that claims to speak for God actually comes from God. John was warning the early church about false teachers who distorted the truth about Jesus Christ. His instruction is just as important today. You live in a world filled with competing voices. Social media, news, entertainment, popular opinion, and even well-meaning people all compete for your attention. Some speak truth. Others sound convincing but quietly pull you away from God's Word. John doesn't tell you to become suspicious of everything. He tells you to test what you hear. How do you do that? You compare every message with God's Word. The Holy Spirit never contradicts the Scriptures He inspired. He always points you toward Christ, never away from Him. If a teaching diminishes Christ, ignores God's Word, or encourages you to trust your own wisdom above His truth, that teaching should not be trusted. Testing what you hear also requires patience. Not every decision has to be made immediately. Sometimes the wisest response is to pause, pray, search the Scriptures, and ask the Holy Spirit for discernment before moving forward. This is another step in the yielded mind. As you yield your mind to the indwelling Holy Spirit, you become less impressed by persuasive voices and more anchored in God's truth. Discernment grows as you spend time in His Word and learn to recognize the voice of the one who always leads you into truth. Today, yield your mind to this truth. Test every voice against God's Word, and trust the Holy Spirit to lead you into His truth. Let's pray. Father, thank You for giving this listener Your Word as the unchanging standard of truth. I pray that You would give them discernment to recognize every voice that does not agree with Your Word and Your character. Guard their mind from deception. Strengthen their confidence in the truth of Scripture, and help them become increasingly sensitive to the leading of Your Holy Spirit. Renew their mind as they yield their thoughts, their will, and their emotions to You. May they faithfully follow the voice of the Good Shepherd above every other voice, and I pray this in His precious and perfect name. Amen. As today's teaching comes to a close, do not rush past what the Holy Spirit may be revealing. Return now to your journal. Write down the revelation you have received. What truth stood out? What challenged your thinking? Next, prayerfully consider opportunities to serve today. Ask God who He might place in your path. How can you encourage, help, listen to, strengthen, or simply be present for someone in need? Be specific. Journal who, when, and how you plan to serve. And finally, as your day comes to an end this evening, return once more to your journal and invite the indwelling Holy Spirit to debrief about your day. Where was obedience strong? Where might repentance be needed? Are there persons to whom you owe an amends? End this day where it began, fully yielded to the indwelling mind of Christ, and I'll meet you again tomorrow on this fifty-day journey of reflection and renewal. May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious to you. May the Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace. In Jesus' name, amen.
