Hi, and welcome to Two Chairs No Filter with Sarah Kate and Holly, where we bring you a real life, a real beauty, and an unfiltered conversation.
SPEAKER_01Good morning. Welcome to another episode of Two Chairs No Filter with Sarah Kate and Holly. We are excited to be back with you this week. We had a fun weekend.
SPEAKER_00Good morning. We went away. We went um impromptu to Nashville on Saturday afternoon. Last week I was putzing around the house doing my chores, and I said to Nick, I said, I wish we could just get in the car Saturday and drive somewhere. I need to get out of here. I'm just overwhelmed. He said, Well, why can't we?
SPEAKER_02It's a valid point.
SPEAKER_00I said, okay. He's like, let me find a hotel. Where do you want to go? And he suggested North Georgia. I said, absolutely not. I hate North Georgia. I said I don't hate it, but there's no place to stay north of us.
SPEAKER_01Like the I can never believe the people who go on their honeymoon to Helen. Like, what on earth? Helen is for going tubing and leaving.
SPEAKER_00And leading. Or going, I'm not gonna go pay hundreds of dollars to stay at a friggin' golfing resort. Boring.
SPEAKER_02Well, what would you do there?
SPEAKER_00Nothing. So we I said Tennessee is it. I said we can go to Chattanooga or we can go to Nashville. So with all of his Hilton points, we booked a hotel. Well, little did we know, Ed Sheeran was in concert at their arena downtown. So because we get there, you know, around seven their time, I think it was seven, the hotel valet says, Uh, are you just checking in? Because our parking lot is full. Oh, gosh. You have the option across the street. Nick wanted to take his truck, which is huge. I have issues with trucks. Trucks serve a purpose for work, but not for every day.
SPEAKER_01Fair.
SPEAKER_00So he has a beast of a truck. We're going across the street in what should be a compact car parking lot, public lot.
SPEAKER_02I know.
SPEAKER_00Okay. We get wedged between two cars. He's like, and he's a master parker. Like he's had standing ovations at Costco. These three guys sit around just like clapping their hands at him doing a one-point backup.
SPEAKER_02Good for him, because Brian's the literal opposite.
SPEAKER_00Oh.
SPEAKER_02The literal opposite of good parker. Like the amount that I hassle that man on his parking also keeps getting notifications at his apartment complex about his parking.
SPEAKER_00Oh my.
SPEAKER_02He's getting hate mail. He's getting hate mail. He getting hate, he got hate emails, and he got hate actual. Take the time to type out a personal note to stick it in his door. So like there's some sort of snitch there who's like, this man in this apartment is parking like this. And they are not having it. Anyways, time to move, obviously. We're over it. I bet we're over it.
SPEAKER_00So we get in. We did find a small spot which I got out and directed him back so we didn't hit the tree. Oh, welcome. Yeah. So we could get as far back not to block the driveway. So another car doesn't hit us. All to the tune of $105 to park over there. Over there for the night. We checked in at 7 o'clock, 7 p.m. We drove out of the parking lot, I'd say 11-ish a.m. because we went and had brunch and then we were leaving around 11. So yeah, so what's that? 12, 15 hours, 16 hours for 100. That was more than everything else, I think.
SPEAKER_01I can't believe that since Hilton's a parking lot wasn't full that they didn't like validate you for over there or something.
SPEAKER_00I know, but it we would have had to pay for to valet, right? But it wouldn't have been $100 and whatever dollars. I know. That's crazy. So that's crazy. So much. You get Hilton points for the free room. I don't know. I feel like I might call Hilton and be like, I don't love this.
SPEAKER_01I don't love this. Maybe you refund us some of our points because that was a good thing. Maybe that is a good thing. I would. What are they gonna do? Tell you no, okay, fine. You already have the money and the points. You might as well call and then otherwise they would say, Oh, sure, we'll give you back 20K or something. Like, okay, fine. I think that's a good idea. Why not? Why not? Like sometimes just like be the squeaky wheel in the nicest way. Like, like I did this week with the note cards. Yes. So I got the I ordered these personalized note cards, and um, they were so cute, and I was ready for them to come, and I had some thank you notes to write that I've been needing to write, so I was like, I really gotta get these bad boys in. Okay. On Thursday, it was like hurricane leftover storms were coming through from the Gulf, coming through here. And so it was raining all day long, hours and hours and hours on end. And somehow just be I guess it was just before I kind of like closed down the house for the night, I looked outside and like under the I don't really have a porch, but like under the little walkway into my house, I see this little package, but it's like just barely under the roof. Just barely. And I look and I'm like, that's a daggum note cards. And of course, it's in like a cardboard mailer. I'm like, this thing is soaked through, and inside is paper. Great, fabulous, love this for me. Of course, it's also the note cards are ruined. I've emailed that company right on back and I was like, hey, look, you guys left your the delivery person left the cards out in the rain and they're ruined. They're like, oh, not a problem. We'll make you new ones, they'll be expedited, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. So, um, you know, I mean, I could have just not worried about it and just ordered new ones or whatever, but I'm glad I didn't. I'm glad I just said, hey, look, you know, had they not vacant cardboard, it would have been fine if they'd been in a plastic mailer, which I know, plastic, the environment, yada yada, I get it. But with papers inside of it, I mean, that was dumb.
SPEAKER_00Anyways, I'm very aggravated with the incompetence of delivery drivers. I said, do they not have an IQ high enough to get a regular job? Is that why they're delivering for everybody? Because who leaves packages outside a commercial space? I know. Outside in the open.
SPEAKER_01Are walking by all the time. So, like to leave stuff outside of our salon is like a horrible idea. We're one sandwich, we're sandwiched between multiple restaurants. It's in a strip mall.
SPEAKER_00Like, that's a bit like there's some shady people that walk through there, especially over the weekend sometimes, but sometimes not. But why not take a package that's out in the open? But the paper towels and the toilet paper would have been funny to see people walking down the street.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Anyway, I got this message that somebody had left a delivery package outside the salon yesterday, Sunday evening. All the while we were stuck with a flat tire in the Tennessee Mountains.
SPEAKER_02Oh, the story gets better. Wow. The fun never stops. So it's only 950 degrees outside.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we were and we were gone for a total of like 28 hours, okay? And probably two of the hours were waiting for somebody to come help us change our tire. So we after we left that parking experience, we went and did some shopping and then we got on the road, and then about probably halfway between Nashville and Chattanooga, literally in the mountains where they have the truck runoffs. Okay. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So Nick is in the middle lane of three lanes, and he says, honey. Oh, like he does. There's something up with my tire because the front tire light, warning light, just came on. Yeah. And he says, I might need air, I might not. He needs new tires anyway, but let that's another conversation. They're so expensive. Okay, so I'm looking for the next gas station, like 13 miles. Okay. You just gotta pull off. So we just keep rolling. And so we get off at a gas station, a shell station, with literally nothing else at the exit. And he's like, Does Tennessee have 511 like Georgia? So I look that up and I'm like, honey, we have Toyota. They have roadside assistance, and it says press the SOS button. So I press the SOS button, um, which I've done by accident in my car before. But I said, I'm okay. I'm not being robbed or murdered or anything. It was an accident. I was trying to get my sunglasses out. So that happens all the time. So anyway, long story. They showed up in an hour and 15 minutes because he literally lived an hour and 15 minutes away, the guy that called Nick to say, I'm gonna help you. Which we did try to use the tools that are in there, but he couldn't get the um, we needed like an electric thing to like loosen the lug nuts without stripping him. We even bought a patch kit thinking we could they thinking you could patch that big old thick tire.
SPEAKER_01I don't know that that works on those.
SPEAKER_00Oh, we tried.
SPEAKER_01Chunky tires.
SPEAKER_00I don't think it does. Well, his tires pretty worn down, so I don't know. Anyway, we digress, we'll move on to our hair topics, maybe.
SPEAKER_01Let's see, today we are talking about protecting our hair through the summer months. Um, because we kind of beat it up in the summer, I feel like. Um, whether it's the sun or whether it's the humidity or the chlorine or salt water, whichever sweater, sweat, it's just kind of all of it. I think we just are brutal on our hair through the summertime. So we're gonna dive into that, I think.
SPEAKER_00Um I think topic number one is during the summer months, most clients say I'm washing my hair more frequently.
SPEAKER_01Yes, yes, because they're in the pool or they just get sweaty and you get so hot, at least in the south. Yeah, that's all I can speak to.
SPEAKER_00But I think you do have north too, because in some places up north you don't necessarily have air conditioning.
SPEAKER_01Right. So you're sweaty, you're like, God, I just want to be like cooled off. And that seems like the way to beat the heat is to just take a shower and actually wet your hair. Um, so with that, I just really suggest using as much rich conditioners as you possibly can.
SPEAKER_00Or if you just wet your hair down, you can just wet your hair down too. And put conditioner in it, or use a co-wash or just try to just rinse. Believe in the power of rinsing because just a good rinse will do the job. Then shampoo it the next day or the following day, but try not to shampoo your hair twice a day.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, try not to shampoo your hair once a day. Jeez. Let alone twice. Um, but I think this is a good time when you can integrate um your leave-in conditioners a little bit more, your spray and leave-in conditioners, uh, whether that's after the pool or um or just any time you only wet your hair instead of washing it, I think you can just use your leave-in conditioner and then as well and style is normal. I also think this is a good time to add in um leave-in, I mean deep conditioners.
SPEAKER_00100%. I think adding a weekly mask to your hair cycling routine would be perfect. Maybe set a day that you can either leave it in for a little while, maybe Sunday, Saturday, or Sunday, put, you know, shampoo your hair, get as much moisture out as you can, and then add the mask. You can leave it on in the shower, or if you have time to get out of the shower and put it in a cap, or just make a little ponytail, or do your errand, you know, do your tours or whatever, and then rinse it out. I just think that adds so much hydration.
SPEAKER_01I need to actually probably be doing that on both of my children this summer because they're in the pool so much. You know what I get asked every summer is which is better for hair, salt water pools or chlorine pools. And I feel like I don't honestly don't like either one. Um they're both gonna raise the pH of your hair. Like I salt water is still gonna dry you out. Chlorine, I mean, just as like granola me. I just feel like chlorine I don't love because it's like in our skin and this, that, and the other. I feel like salt water is probably a little easier on our bodies to be in it for hours on end than chlorine is. Like, I hate how you smell like chlorine after you leave the pool, and you know, your eyeballs, like my little kids' eyes are red as can be because they won't stop opening their eyes underwater. But I don't feel like I really like either of them. No for hair color and skin and all that.
SPEAKER_00I feel like all of it's drying, very drying. And honestly, from doing keratin treatments, they say stay out of salt water and chlorine. So I don't think one is better than the other. I don't think so either. And for our blonde, little blonde girls or guys, I think it's really important to put some leave-in on their hair before they get their hair wet.
SPEAKER_01Yes, I agree, I agree, and because then by the end of the summer, they have that little green tinge to it.
SPEAKER_00And remember, hair is like a sponge. So the more if you could wet your hair before you get into the pool, add some conditioner and then do your swim or wear a swim cap, whichever you choose, just to protect your hair.
SPEAKER_01I feel like I tried to use a swim cap one time and I really thought that it was gonna like keep my hair dry and it did not. Yeah, I was bamboozled by that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I don't know. I I'm sure there's a good purpose, but I just don't get my hair wet.
SPEAKER_01I just don't get my hair wet either. I have to really, I have to tell my kids, okay, you can get my hair well to wet today because I'm actually going to shower and wash my hair. Otherwise, I'm like, don't get my hair wet, don't get my hair wet.
SPEAKER_00That's right. You gotta train them young. Don't splash me. Don't splash me. If you splash me, this pool day is done.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I am very quickly getting out of this pool and you are having to entertain yourself with your sibling, whether you want to or not. 100%. So um, I do think, well, I do know that there are products if you do get to that place, whether it's you or your kids or whatever, if you get to the end of the summer and you're like, why does my sweet little blonde-headed baby have green hair? There are products that you can be using for that that really do cleanse it out and give the hair health. But you can be using those shampoos and conditioners all summer long. Like I know Malibu C has one. It's called swimmer's wellness, maybe something like that. It is something to do with swim, it makes sense. Um, and I don't use it often enough, but I have recommended that to plenty of people over the years. So you can it has like a shampoo and conditioner and like a leave-in or whatever the what, so it helps all throughout the summer, but just preemptively wetting your hair, whether it's just with water or whether it's with a leave-in conditioner or both, preemptively getting your hair to soak in healthy stuff before you're hopping in that pool for it to soak up chlorine and salt water and whatever, it's our the porous little holes in your hair almost are already sucked up with leave-in conditioner. So that's kind of the goal for that to keep your hair healthy and and moisturized and not soaking up whatever is in the pool. That's right.
SPEAKER_00And if you don't happen to have leave-in conditioner at home, you can just take your rinse-out conditioner, either coat it onto the hair or put it in a spray bottle.
SPEAKER_01You can put it in a spray bottle with a little bit of water and make your own DIY leave-in conditioner, which is totally fine. I generally end up buying another one just because I find it easier. It's one less thing, one less chore for me to have to do. So I just buy one and then it's easy peasy. But um, but either way, whatever floats you boat.
SPEAKER_00What about protecting from UV rays? My ginger friend. Oh, well, you know, I didn't nail that one.
SPEAKER_01I did not nail that one earlier this summer uh when we were in Italy, I guess it was one of the days we were in Italy, and uh, I think Parks and I both got sunburn in our hairline. So then I looked like I had dandruff for the rest of the week because I just got a little sunburn right in my part, which honestly you don't notice that it's happening, and then you go to brush your hair later and you're like, ow, ow.
SPEAKER_00Um, so I said I like that shirt. We're in person today. I said, I kind of like your shirt. Well, it's so but it's so soft.
SPEAKER_01It's from Aerie. I wish they would make it shirt. Anyways, it's soft and flowy, and I do wear it really, honestly, way too much, but That's why it's good. Anyways, back to my story. I burned both of our parts that day, so we both looked like we had a little scaly dandruff, but it was just like a poor little skin. So um, I did not order it while I was in Italy because I knew I wouldn't be able to get it because you know it I just knew I wouldn't too. So I waited till we got home, but I have quickly ordered some of that brush on powder sunblock. Have you ever seen those? It's like a little cosmetic brush, and then it's got this little vial at the end of it that's powder, and you just like click it like a pen, like and then it powders out, and you can just brush it on. You can brush it on your face and stuff like that too. Like you can use it anywhere, but it's easy to use in your hairline. So um I've never seen it. Yeah, it's really great actually. I've used it in the past. There, we've had times when the kids were not into putting on sunblock. Um, especially uh one of my little nephews, um, and he's he's on the spectrum, and so sunblock was not a touch that he liked to have touching him. So we have little pictures of Parker putting his sunblock on him so she would pretend it was makeup. So she was doing his makeup, but she was putting on his sunblock, and he would sit still for parks to put it on him. So our sweet little Gabby Pooh would just let her put on sunblock before we go out to the beach. But just these like it's I one of them's called brush on block. So B-O-B is what it's called. So that is really great. Since I did not have that when we were in Italy and in the Netherlands, I just went ahead and put a little bit of my face sunblock on our hairlines because I was trying to trying to combat the situation that I'd already made a mess of. So that is important. Put that sunblock on your hairline. If your husband is balding or has a bald spot or thinning or whatever the what, absolutely put make him put sunblock on his head.
SPEAKER_00Also, there's hair products that do have UVA, UVB protection that will help protect your hair color from fading in the sun. But think of it if you were to lay a shirt outside to dry in the sun, day in, day out, day in, day out, it's eventually gonna fade, and so is your hair color as well. Um, also, with that being said, I would definitely cover it up. Cover up your hair. What's the easiest thing to do? Is just cover your hair up. Just find a hat. It doesn't matter if it's fashionable, a ball cap, whatever. Get your hair undercover.
SPEAKER_01I'm gonna say this. I was at Walmart last night, and I they had the cutest hats. They usually really cute hats. And one of them that was super cute, I couldn't find the price tag on, and I was like, that's gonna bamboozle me. I'm gonna get up there and it's gonna be $30, and I didn't want to spend $30. But I found another one that was. Right, yeah. I don't know why. It's something at Walmart. There was like no prices on anything. I was like, what are we doing here? Is this like because I always feel like if you don't, if you have to ask the price, you can't afford it. That's true. That's one of my I agree. That's the That's one of my money rules. Like, if you have to ask the price, you already can't afford it. But but I was at Walmart, so I mean, well, how much could it have been? Anyways, I did buy another hat. I got inspired to get a hat because I wore my mom's when we were in Italy, and I just felt so um, I don't know, Italian. I love a hat. It was just it was cute and effortless and so fun. And I like to wear, I would like to wear a hat like that instead of a baseball cap at the pool. Because when I wear a baseball cap, then I look my hair gets greasy too fast.
SPEAKER_00It does. Um then I do it more often.
SPEAKER_01It's almost a bucket, but it's got a little bit more of a wider brim. Okay. It's got a little bit more of a wider brim, but they had little really cute bucket hats there. I'm just not sure. I'm I don't know.
SPEAKER_00I love a bucket hat.
SPEAKER_01I bet you're cute in a bucket hat because you're cute and petite.
SPEAKER_00I think I might look like a I don't know, like a you would look good with a Julia Roberts brim.
SPEAKER_01All I can think of is the penis. So that's what I think I might look like. Well, we don't need that. Anyways, I'm not doing that, but I did find a cute hat and I um I'm excited to wear it at the pool. So hopefully there's some sunshine today, but I don't know, it's not looking promising, so we'll see.
SPEAKER_00Um on a side note, with our skin and sunscreen, we've had a lot of conversations around sunblock lately between us. And so my husband for a while has been doing some outdoor work, landscaping, and you know, he comes in after a week or so, and Sarah Kate looks at him and says, Well, you need some sunblock. He says, Don't be jealous because I didn't.
SPEAKER_01Tan because I'm a redhead and I don't. So, anyways, I mean he looked at me like that um family guy skit about like it's a lifestyle, Brian. Like, don't be jealous because you can't tan. Well, anyways, I am literally jealous of everyone who can tan, but I do wear sunblock. I really do. Yeah, and he doesn't. He does not.
SPEAKER_00I bought him 100 and I got him, I bought him literally 100 SPF. Because I'm like, he's outside all day.
SPEAKER_02100 SPF. Do you just apply this once a week and it works for the whole week? I think it's Neutrogena.
SPEAKER_00Okay. So I was like, it's it's small enough for him to bring in his backpack. Do you think he supplied it? Absolutely not. No, because even last night in bed, I said, okay, your forearm looks like Sean, your upper arm looks like me. Sean, who's half black.
SPEAKER_01Literally.
SPEAKER_00So just saying, you know, he's loving his tan, but it's a little uneven and a little patchy. And then this brings me to Sarah Kate's boyfriend saying that sunscreen causes cancer.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah. He sent me this like reels, who knows where he gets his news at. Anyways, um, so and it's like, and this is this is very much precipitated on social media right now. So that sunblock is actually causing more melanoma. That is not the case of what's happening. The case of what's happening is there are there are plenty of bad things, bad chemicals in our sun blocks. We are putting these sunblocks all over our biggest organ in our body, which is our skin. Our skin is absorbing all of that, it is getting into our bloodstreams, it is doing not good things in our bloodstreams. Absolutely, yes, yes, yes, yes. Those are true things. Our government has about two safe filters that they use in sunblocks, and they have not approved any new ones since like the 90s or the 80s or something like that, like the 1900s, if you will. So all these new filters for sunblocks that are approved in Europe, in Asia, all over the place, we are not approving those. There are plenty of new filters that we could use to get great skin protection, and our FDA is not approving them. Very recently, within the past couple weeks, the FDA did approve a new one that the EU has been using for probably decades now. So we're on the right track to getting healthier filters for our sunblock. But I will tell you, one of my most favorite things to do is buy sunblock from anywhere other than America.
SPEAKER_00Um but if you don't have that option, you can look for mineral-based right.
SPEAKER_01Mineral-based sunblocks are where it's at. So if it has zinc dioxide or titanium dioxide, it's great. Um, those are gonna be the two that are have been approved and that are gonna they sit on top of the skin, they don't absorb into the skin. So sometimes that's where you're seeing that white cast, and of course, people don't like that, and it's not easy to rub in, and this, that, and the other. Um, a really, really clean one that um is awesome is from a brand called Badger. Um, but it's so annoying because all of them are so expensive.
SPEAKER_00I'm like, why do I like the native one even? I can use it, but yeah, I do like it. It's light on the skin. But where where do you find Badger?
SPEAKER_01Um, I think that's an order online, I believe. Okay. I believe that's an order online one. I did um Is it spray or cream? Cream.
SPEAKER_00Mine's cream too.
SPEAKER_01I like a cream, period. I don't believe in a spray. Because you're not even, you're not even, and I like if I spray on sunblock on my kids or whatever, you still have to rub it. You still rub it in. I still get my hands dirty. I don't care. Um, because I just you're not half of it's blowing out in the wind. Like you're not getting that on your body. I think it's a bit more.
SPEAKER_00And it's only good for so many. Same thing with your hair or your skin or your scalp. It's only good for like 90 minutes. Right. Right. It has to be applied for so many minutes before you get into the water, too. I think for it to be active. Yes, I agree.
SPEAKER_01So I did try some of the Trader Joe's this year, and I do kind of like it. It's really clean feeling. I almost bought that. Um, their face one feels like a primer.
unknownHmm.
SPEAKER_01I wonder if you could wear it under makeup. I don't know. I haven't tried it, but it does feel really good. And I also bought um this spray one, but it's a spray, not like an aerosol spray, it's like a pump spray, you know, like our um, like our body mass. It's like that. Like the pump is like exactly like that. Um, and it's from Trader Joe's, but it's like a shimmering one, and it's so fun and so pretty. But Brian's like, you look like you've been at Magic City.
SPEAKER_02With your hair and with your glitter. He's like, You look like you've been at Magic City, and then God forbid I touch him. He's like, now I look like I've been at Magic City all day, which is uh adult club, if you in Atlanta, yeah.
SPEAKER_01So that's um that's the latest joke is that I look like I've been at Magic City with it. Um but I do like it, it smells good and it looks pretty, and I I kind of like being a little shimmery, sparkly queen. So I'm here for it.
SPEAKER_00I kind of like it too. So then what about hot tools? Because this time of year, our hair either gets frizzier or flatter with the humidity or the moisture in the air in and outdoors. So, what do you say?
SPEAKER_01So I feel like I kind of go either way during the summer. Like a part of me is like, why bother doing my hair? Because it's just gonna get flat. Mine's flat, mine doesn't get big, mine gets flat. So any hot tools that I put on it don't last. So that's aggravating to me. Without putting a whole bunch of like hairspray and like stuff to block out the humidity, it just doesn't last. And then also I get hot, so I just want to put my hair up. So regardless if you're using the hot tools or if you're not, the heat protectant's a big deal. Huge. So I feel like when I do heat style my hair, I'm doing it multiple times a day because it's fallen flat. So it's like I do it in the morning, and then if I'm going out to dinner that night, I gotta do it again because I throughout the day my hair is totally flat, which I hate. Um, I had a interesting, funny, not funny ha ha, but uh interesting conversation um this weekend about hot tools and how hot to use them on normal regular people hair.
SPEAKER_00What do you tell people? What do you tell your clients typically? I usually say 350.
SPEAKER_01I say 350 um because if you can cook cookies at it, you're cooking your hair.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, although I think some coarser textures can tolerate warmth.
SPEAKER_01That is true, that is true.
SPEAKER_00But inch it up. And the more you use your iron or flat iron, it does cool off to a little bit in in the process. So anyway.
SPEAKER_01I walked into the bedroom and could smell hair burning.
SPEAKER_00Whoa.
SPEAKER_01I had just gotten home from the grocery store, and I was like, what heat do you have that on? And she's got her hair in her mouth because she doesn't own a clip. Um I'm like, get that hair out of your mouth so I can hear you. I go grab a clip, an alligator clip, pin her hair out of her way. Why do you think? Did she use a ponytail holder? No, I don't know. Should I have one of those either? I don't know. Anyways, clip her hair up and I was like, what heat are you on? She's like, 450? I said, absolutely not. 450? 450.
SPEAKER_00What the heck? I don't even cook pizza at 450.
SPEAKER_01Look, I cooked our biscuits yesterday morning at 450. Okay, like that's what you're supposed to do for like cornbread and things like that. Get it hot, hot, hot, and then it makes it delicious. Anyways, that is not for your hair. So I raised my voice a couple times and nicely told her that is not the heat that you you need for your hair. She's like, Well, how long, how many seconds can I leave it on the hair at 450? I said zero seconds until you get a wholly different head of hair that's completely coarse and needs that amount of heat. You may use it for zero seconds. You may use it at 350 for whatever amount of seconds, my dear. But also, you need to be using hair heat protectant.
SPEAKER_00A hundred percent.
SPEAKER_01Like I can smell your hair cooking. And she goes, I just thought that's what it smelled like always. I said, Yeah, when you're burning your hair. Because she's must be always burning her hair. She must be always burning her hair. So we had a very good learning lesson yesterday on proper heat. So I do and I stand by this. I would rather, especially if you're using a flat iron, I would rather you run over an area twice or three times with that than to heat it up and only do it one time.
SPEAKER_00That's right. There was a show, a reality show this week I was watching, and the girl in the show was talking to another girl all the while she had her curling iron in her hair, and it was making me uncomfortable about how long she had each section in that hair. Oh my god. It was bad. But just well, what about just even changing up? Like, for instance, with me, my hair's pretty wavy. So this time of year, I really kind of give up on pulling it straight. I just try to embrace my natural hair.
SPEAKER_01I think a lot of people embrace, especially in the South, this like this time of year, they just embrace their naturally curly hair and just try to l enhance their curls better.
SPEAKER_00Right. You know, so take on the season, depending on you your climate, just try to change up your hairstyle, change up your skincare, moisturize your hair.
SPEAKER_01This is a time of year when I feel like I have a lot of clients who do their keratins also.
SPEAKER_00Keratins have been in full force lately. And what is a keratin treatment for those with straight hair is just basically our hair is made up of keratin protein, and the keratin does come from a vegetarian source, and it is applied to the hair to help smooth the hair, add shine, reduce frizz. It also um reduces your blow-dry time so you don't have to bake your hair on a flat iron. Um, so it's gonna give it strength, shine, smoothness.
SPEAKER_01I my curly hair clients like to have a keratin this time of year because it makes their curls look more defined and not frizzy. Right. So it takes out that frizz, but they can still wear their hair curly. It's not like back in the day when it was like a Japanese straightener where it was like your hair was board straight, you could never get a curl in it, you could never get a bend in it ever again. This is your hair now.
SPEAKER_00It's also good for clients that have gone gray. Yes, it's great. It's manage the texture of gray hair. 100%. It makes the hair so much more manageable, shiny. It doesn't change the bonds in your hair, which gets kind of more technical, but it lives on the surface of your hair and it helps fill in that cuticle and it helps just make your hair healthy and strong.
SPEAKER_01And so it just wears off over time. So depending on which one you're using, like the one we use at the salon lasts for approximately six months. Some clients just go do it once a year. So some clients do it once a year because I feel like they want it really intense, you know, during these summer months, and then by the time winter, it's like they can style it more and it's no big deal. Um, but some people do it twice a year and just kind of, you know, by the time it wears off, they notice and they're like, oh gosh, it took me forever to blow dry my hair today, so I must be ready for another keratin. So it just kind of depends on on what you're looking for. But once or twice a year, I think a keratin can make a big difference on a lot of people's hair. Absolutely. And even like if you don't think necessarily have really curly hair, you just think, gosh, it's so hard for it takes forever for it to blow dry or it just gets so frizzy. Like it, you're still a good candidate for it.
SPEAKER_00A hundred percent.
SPEAKER_01I think more people are good candidates for it than they really realize.
SPEAKER_00I agree. And that cut down on the dry time. Like my client on my client's hair on Saturday looked so pretty. So pretty. Oh my gosh, I loved it because she's got naturally white hair. Yeah, well, it's blonde. It I do highlight it, but you do? I do highlight it.
SPEAKER_01It's so natural.
SPEAKER_00I do, and um that keratin just made it more silvery, which she likes to be sunnier, which is fine. That's in her case, made it too cool. Where most of the people's cases it makes it a little warmer. Yeah, gosh, it's so pretty though. Yeah, that's gonna be a big difference for her. She's gonna really like that, I think. 100%. So, you know, switching up your style is definitely you can wear your hair up more, wear it braided. Just try different things. It's a good time of year to do that.
SPEAKER_01I agree, and it's just so hot. I it's like try having it up off your neck as much as possible, is kind of my goal with it.
SPEAKER_00Exactly.
SPEAKER_01So that keeps me from having to style it too much. I just kind of can get away with not having to heat style it. I just put it up in a clip or put it in up in a fun bun or something like that, or make a sleek pony or something like that.
SPEAKER_00That's right. So, just really to kind of summarize everything we've talked about for tips is don't overcleanse your hair this summer. Definitely protect your hair with UV. Condition, condition, condition, condition, mask. Wear a hat. Wear a hat. Don't get your hair wet in the pool. Wear your sunscreen. Yes. And if you really need extra help, give us a holler or give your stylist a holler to get a keratin treatment.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely. Investigate the keratin treatment more because I think it you would be surprised by how many people really would be benefit from it.
SPEAKER_00100%. We use a cleaner version of one that we like, and really we like it because it's it's better.
SPEAKER_01It's better. I think you get so much bang for your buck on it. 100%. So good. Thanks for joining us on Two Chairs, No Filter.
