Is Your Weekend Actually Restful?

Are you one of those people who’s almost a little grateful when Monday rolls around? If you have a "Go-Go-Go" lifestyle, your weekends might not offer you much rest—just a change of scenery. Many of us are so used to the expectation of moving fast that being still feels like a "shame trigger". We carry the toxic mindset that "if you have time to lean, you have time to clean," even years after leaving those high-pressure environments.

In this episode of Coffee Cup Mindfulness, host Chris Neal challenges the habit of always running. This daily 3-5 minute podcast is a practical, agnostic guide for anyone who feels at war with themselves and exhausted by the constant pace of life.

The Importance of Stopping

If we cannot stop, we cannot have insight. When we are always running, it becomes a habit that follows us even into our sleep. In this episode, you will learn to:

Identify the Shame Trigger: Recognize why being still feels "off-putting" or foreign to you.

Connect Internal and External Conflict: Understand how being at war within yourself leads to finding conflict with others.

Practice the Art of Stopping: Learn why calming, resting, and healing are the foundations of true self-care.

By practicing these simple grounding techniques, you can start to shed the pressure to keep moving and live more fully into your own values.

Good morning and welcome to the Coffee Cup Mindfulness Podcast. My name is Chris, and I'll be here every weekday morning to help you start your day more focused and grounded. Let's get started. Are you one of those people who's almost a little grateful when Monday rolls around? That may sound weird, I know, but if you have a go-go-go lifestyle, weekends may not offer you much rest, just to change the scenery. Some people are actually a little relieved when the weekend is over because they can get back into their routine and maybe even get a little sleep at night. This is where I want to challenge you to rest. I have to be honest, I struggle with rest. Actually, I struggle with being still. I think it might be kind of a shame trigger for me. I just started a new job, and the job is amazing, but I was sharing with my supervisor this week that I'm still adjusting. This is because I've been blessed with a job at a place where they truly value self-care. They give you time to breathe as you complete your work. I'm aware how fortunate I am, and I'm truly grateful for that. But it's also a little off-putting for me. I'm so used to the expectation that you keep moving fast the whole time. I remember waiting tables in college and being told by my managers, if you have time to lean, you have time to clean. So many years later, I still struggle to shed that toxic mindset. So one of my favorite books by Tik Not Han is called The Heart of the Buddhist Teaching. Again, you don't have to become a Buddhist to practice mindfulness, and you'll hear me often talk about Tik Not Han. If you've read any of his books, I know you get it. I'll drop a link to this one in the comments in case you want to check it out. Anyway, after he tells the story of the horse that I told you back in episode two, he talks about the importance of stopping, calming, resting, and healing. He reminds us that if we can't stop, we can't have insight. And if you're interested in mindfulness, I'm guessing a little more insight is on the wish list. He reminds us that when we are always running, it becomes a habit. He says we struggle all the time, even during our sleep. We are at war within ourselves, and we can easily start a war with others. That landed really hard for me when I read that. If we're in conflict within ourselves, we easily find conflict with others. How exhausting is that? So here's my invitation to you in the coming days, whether you're off work or not. Try to sit and be still for just a few moments. If that feels foreign to you, that's okay. We just notice it. Mindfulness is about noticing, no matter what the circumstance. If being still is a challenge, then it is. When we develop our practice more fully, we learn to engage in active non-doing. Trust me, that's not the same as loafing around and not doing your housework. We'll get there, so don't worry. But active non-doing is something to try in the next few days. Just a few minutes to start. Just sit and breathe. If it's difficult, realize it won't always be that way. So, friends, let's celebrate another week of life on this giant spinning rock we call a planet. Five days in, and you showed up every morning. Enjoy the weekend. You've earned it. And I'll see you on the other side of the weekend Monday morning, and we'll continue our journey together. Thanks for the gift of your time. And until next time, be well.
