In this episode of Boston Banner Breakdown, I break down three major Boston sports storylines. First, I look at the Celtics after their disappointing playoff collapse, the Jaylen Brown trade rumors, possible superstar options like Giannis and LeBron, and what Boston could do to improve the frontcourt. Then, I move to the Red Sox, where the offense has struggled, injuries are piling up, Trevor Story is out, Marcelo Mayer could get a bigger opportunity, and Garrett Crochet’s health is something to watch. Finally, I close with the Patriots, Drake Maye’s rising expectations, the schedule release, national attention returning to New England, and the A.J. Brown rumors.
Welcome And Three Storylines
SPEAKER_00Welcome back to the Boston Banner Breakdown Podcast. Today I want to talk about three major Boston sports storylines. We are going to start with the Celtics. Because after the way their season ended, there are a lot of questions about what comes next. Then we will move into the Red Sox. Because they are in a tough spot. The injuries are starting to pile up. The offense has not been good enough. And they're already putting themselves in a tough position where the wild card race might become an uphill battle. And lastly, we'll close with the Patriots. Even though the Patriots are not in season yet, they might actually have one of the more interesting storylines in Boston sports right now. Their schedule is out. The national attention for the Patriots is back. Drake May's expectations are sky high going into next season. And lastly, there are some lingering questions about if they need to make one more major move before training camp begins. So let's
Celtics Collapse Raises Offseason Stakes
SPEAKER_00start with the Boston Celtics. The Celtics season ended in a way that changes the entire conversation around this team. Boston lost a three one series lead to the Sixers in the first round. That kind of playoff loss forces questions. It doesn't matter how good you were in the regular season. It doesn't matter how strong the numbers were. When you blow a three one series lead and go out in the first round, people are going to ask whether this roster needs to change this offseason. And when you look at the regular season numbers, the Celtics were still very good. They finished 56 and 26, which was the second seed in the Eastern Conference. SBN's BPI gave them a 26% chance to make the NBA finals. Their team numbers were strong too. They had an eight net rating, which ranked fourth. Their 120 offensive rating ranked second. And forty-six percent of their field goal attempts came from three, which ranked fourth. So this wasn't a bad basketball team. This wasn't a team that just snuck into the playoffs. This was still one of the better teams in the NBA. But that is also why the first round exit hurts a lot. Because when you have a team with this kind of regular season profile, the expectation is to make an NBA Finals run. And Boston didn't do that. That's why this offseason feels very critical for the Celtics. The Celtics are not just asking how do we get better? They're asking a bigger question. Can this core be trusted to another NBA Finals Championship?
Jalen Brown Decision Extension Or Trade
SPEAKER_00And that brings us to one of their stars, Jalen Brown. Jalen Brown is probably going to be one of the biggest Celtics talking points this offseason. And honestly, that's not surprising. When a team with championship expectations loses in the first round, the top players, Jalen Brown and Jason Tatum, are always going to be discussed. There has already been trade rumors around Jalen Brown. NBC Sports Boston said that he is a trade name to watch this offseason. He is also extension eligible on July 26th, and the number being discussed is a two-year $142 million extension. So the Celtics have a big decision to make with him. Do they keep building around Jalen Brown and Jason Tatum? Or do they explore the trade market for Jalen Brown? Also, they can wait and see what kind of superstars become available this offseason. My take, I would not rush to trade Jalen Brown unless the Celtics are getting a superstar in return. Rumors are expected after a first round playoff collapse. That does not mean trading him is automatically the right move. Sometimes fans hear trade rumor and immediately think the team has to do something major. But the Celtics have to be careful. Jalen Brown is still one of the best wings in the NBA. He recently made second team All NBA for this past regular season. He can score, he can defend, he has playoff experience, he has been through big moments in Boston. So if you are moving him, it cannot be just because people are frustrated. It has to be to make your team an NBA Finals contender. That is a key phrase for me. Does the move raise Boston's ceiling next season? If the answer is yes, then listen to the trade offers. If the answer is no, then you cannot panic to make a deal. Because trading Jalen Brown wouldn't just shake things up, it could make the Celtics worse off. Now the other part of this is the noise around him. Recently on his Twitch comments about Stephen A. Smith, Brown called him the face of Clickbait Media. That added another layer to this story. It feels like the second escalation in the saga. And that matters because it shows how much pressure and attention is around Jalen Brown right now. But I would separate the media noise from the basketball decisions. The basketball decision should be about whether Jalen Brown helps the Celtics to win in other NBA finals. And I think he still does. So my stance is do not rush to trade Jalen Brown. But if a true superstar becomes available, then Brad Stevens has to at least consider moving on from Jalen Brown. The Giannis
Giannis Rumors And LeBron Reality Check
SPEAKER_00rumors are what makes this Celtics offseason really interesting. According to Mark Stein of the Stein line, Miami and Boston are increasingly viewed as the two potential trade destinations that currently intrigue Giannis the most. Now I want to be careful with that. That does not mean Giannis is definitely getting traded. That does not mean Giannis has demanded Boston. And it does not mean the Celtics are close to anything. But when a player like Giannis is connected to the Celtics, you have to at least discuss it. Because Giannis is one of the few players in the NBA who can make you think differently about your whole roster. If Giannis is available this offseason, the Celtics need to ask themselves, what is the price? Would Jalen Brown have to be included in the trade? Would the roster still be deep enough to make an NBA finals run? And would Giannis fit with the rest of the Celtics core? Those are some serious questions. But from a talent standpoint, it is obvious why Boston would be intrigued. Giannis gives you rim pressure, he gives you elite defense, he gives you rebounding, he gives you transition offense, and he gives you the kind of superstar force that can change a playoff series. The hard part is the cost. Because if you're trading for Giannis, you're not getting him for a small package. You're probably talking about a major salary, major picks, and a major superstar player going out. So again, it comes back to Jalen Brown. If the Celtics trade Jalen Brown, it has to be for a player who clearly changes the direction of this franchise. Giannis would 100% be that level of player. But not every rumor is worth blowing up this team for. That is why I would frame the Celtics offseason this way. The Celtics should not panic, but they can also not ignore superstar opportunities like Giannis if he becomes available this offseason. There is a balance. Another name that came up recently is LeBron James, and this one is interesting, but it's not the main Celtics topic this offseason. The report from Shams and Rich Paul was that every contender checked in. LeBron James is an unrestricted free agent this offseason. So naturally people are going to ask, would Brad Stevens even consider signing him? And I think it's worth mentioning, because it is the king, LeBron James. Even at this stage of his career, he is still one of the best playmakers in the NBA. He brings elite playoff experience, he can create elite offense, and he can control the pace of a game. If you put him next to Jalen Brown and Jason Tatum, as well as the rest of the Celtics core, there's at least a basketball argument for why it would be interesting. But there are also major reasons why Boston should avoid it. Age is a big question, the money is a big question, the timeline is a huge question, and lastly, the media attention is a question. And financially, it may not even be realistic unless there are major roster moves. So my take is LeBron is worth mentioning because of who he is, but he should not be the Celtics' main target this offseason. The Celtics should not build their summer chasing LeBron James into free agency. If something unexpected comes up, then you listen and you possibly go after LeBron James. But right now, the bigger Celtics questions are still Jalen Brown, Giannis in this front court. The front
Frontcourt Targets Size Without Losing Identity
SPEAKER_00court is another area Boston has to address this offseason. My take is that the Celtics need more size and rebounding, but the player has to fit their spacing and defensive style. That is the important part. It is not just about getting any big man, it's about getting the right big man. The Celtics want spacing, defensive versatility, and they want players who can survive and play off matchups. So to talk about possible front court options, we have to look at both the strengths and the concerns. So to start with Isaiah Hartenstein, he averaged nine points per game and nine rebuns per game for the Oklahoma City Thunder last season. The Celtics would like him because he's a strong rebounder, a good screener, a physical interior player, and a smart passer for a big man. He could help Boston by giving them more size, toughness, and rebounding. But the problem is the money. His club option is $28 million. That makes him very difficult to acquire. Boston may not want to use major salary matching piece for a center unless they view him as a major difference maker. So Hornstein is interesting, but probably not realistic. Next, there's Robert Williams, also known as Time Lord. He averaged six points per game and seven rebounds per game. His contract is thirteen million dollars. And with him, the appeal is obvious. He already knows Boston, he knows the system, he brings athleticism, rim protection, lob threat ability, rebounding, and defensive versatility. If healthy, he could give the Celtics a type of energy and shot blocking they desperately need. But that is the issue. If healthy, the injury history is a huge concern. Even if the contract is more affordable, the question is whether Boston could trust him to stay healthy through the entire full season and a deep playoff run. Lastly, there is Joseph Nurchich. He averaged 10 points per game and ten rebounds per game. His average salary is about $17 million. The Celtics would want him because he gives them size, rebounding, physicality, and a true interior presence. He can help on the glass, he can defend bigger centers, he can provide a more traditional big man option if Boston wants to add toughness. But the concerns are salary, mobility, and fit. He may not fit Boston's preferred playstyle if they want a faster, switchable, floor spacing big. And he has had injury concerns in his career as well. So with all three players, there's a version that makes sense for the Celtics. But there's also a reason to hesitate. That is why the front court search has to be specific. The Celtics need size and rebounding. But they cannot just add any big name and assume it works out. They need the right fit for their system. So for the Celtics, I would look at the offseason in three key parts. First, what do they do with Jalen Brown? Second, do they seriously pursue a superstar if one becomes available? And third, how do they improve the front court without losing their identity? This is still a very talented team. But after blowing a three one lead in the first round, the Celtics cannot just run it back next season. They need answers, but they should not panic. Next,
Red Sox Offense Slips While Injuries Mount
SPEAKER_00let's discuss the Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox are in a difficult spot. They are twenty five and thirty three. They are fifth in the A least. They are about three games back from the third wild card spot. They just won the series versus the Cleveland Guardians two one on the road today. That is not where you want to be, especially when the offense has been this bad. The Red Sox have scored two hundred and twenty two runs, which ranks twenty seventh. Their six ninety three OPS ranks twenty first. They have only hit forty three home runs, which ranks twenty-ninth. These numbers tell the story. The offense is not doing enough, and the problem is not just one bad week. When you're near the bottom of the league and runs, OPS and home runs, that is a team wide issue. You can survive a cold stretch, you can survive one or two struggling hitters. But when the whole offense lacks power and consistency, that becomes a much bigger problem. And now you add the Trevor Storr injury to the mix as well. The Trevor Storr injury makes the Red Sox situation even tougher. He had sports hernia surgery and is expected to miss several weeks. That leaves Boston with another hole in an offense that was already struggling. But it opens the door for Marcello Meyer. If Meyer gets a real opportunity and produces, he could give the lineup some energy and fans something to watch during a frustrating stretch. But the Red Sox cannot put everything on one young player. The bigger issue is still that the offense needs more power and consistency. Garrett Cochet is another major storyline for the Red Sox. The encouraging update is that he is progressing and reportedly pain free after a bullpen session. But the bigger question is not just when he comes back, it is whether he looks right when he returns. His numbers before the injury were concerning, with a six third ERA in thirty innings, and hitters were making too much hard contact. So for the Red Sox, Cruchet being available is important, but being effective matters even more. If the Red Sox want to stay in the wild card race, they need him to come back and be healthy, and give them real stability in the rotation. So when I look at the Red Sox right now, the biggest issue is the offense. The injuries matter, the pitching matters, but the lack of power is the main problem. If they want to stay in the wild card race, they need more production, more extra base hits, and more consistency from the lineup. The Red Sox do not have to fix everything in one week, but they also have to start showing signs of life from the offense. Because if they keep playing like this, the season could start slipping away sooner than later.
Patriots Primetime Returns With Bigger Expectations
SPEAKER_00Now let's get into it with the New England Patriots. The Patriots are not in season yet, but they are absolutely worth talking about. And honestly, after the Celtics and Red Sox, the Patriots might be the third team that has the most attention in Boston sports right now. The schedule release gives you a real topic. Drake May is a key storyline. Mike Variable gives you a new direction for this franchise. And the AJ Brown rumors give you a major what if conversation. So let's start with the schedule. The Patriots are not in season yet, but the schedule release gives them a key storyline. National attention is back in New England. The Patriots reportedly have five primetime games next season. And that tells you the league believes the Patriots are going to be very good again next year. A lot of that comes back to Drake May and Mike Vrabel. May gives them a franchise quarterback, and Vrabel gives this franchise a new direction. But the spotlight also raises the expectations surrounding this team. This is not just about development anymore. The Patriots want to show that they can be more competitive, especially when the schedule gets tougher and the games get bigger late in the year. That is where we find out if they have just improved or if they're actually ready to matter again. That brings us to Drake May. For May, the expectation is not just development anymore, it is production. Last year people wanted to see flashes. Now the Patriots need him to show he can be the franchise quarterback for a winning club. That does not mean he has to throw for three hundred fifty yards every week. It means he has to be more consistent. Can he keep the offense on schedule? Can he avoid the big turnovers? Can he make three team plays? And when the explosive play is there, can he hit it? Those are the next step question marks for Drake May. The talent is clearly there, but this season is about proving it week after week, especially in bigger games with more national attention. If he doesn't, the conversations around this Patriots team can change in a hurry. But I also think it is important not to judge Drake May in a vacuum. Quarterbacks matter more than anything, but the situation around them still matters. If the offensive line struggles, May is going to look worse. If the receivers cannot separate, the offense becomes harder to run. That is why the Patriots offseason matters so much. If they expect May to make a real leap this season, they have to protect him and give him enough weapons. The tackle investment shows they are trying to help him up front. But weapons question is still there, and that is where the HA rumors become very interesting.
AJ Brown What If For Drake May
SPEAKER_00The Patriots still have one major question before Camp. Do they need one more big move? And do If that move is AJ Brown, then yes, that would change the entire conversation around Drake May. Without AJ Brown, the question is whether the Patriots gave May enough help this offseason. With AJ Brown, the question becomes how far can this offense go next season? That is the difference a true number one receiver can make. AJ Brown would not be just another wide receiver one. He would be the kind of player defenses have to game plan around. He would give May a reliable target, make life easier for other receivers, bring physicality and add yards after catch ability. But I want to be clear, AJ Brown is not a patriot right now. There is still a rumor around this conversation. So I would not talk about it like it's finalized. But as a fit, it makes a lot of sense. If New England wants Drake May to take a real leak next season, adding AJ Brown would be one of the clearest ways to help him. It would show the Patriots are serious about building a rather young superstar quarterback. You protect him, you give him weapons, and then you find out how high his ceiling really is next season. So for the Patriots, I would look at three main things. First, the schedule tells us national media attention is back. The primetime games show the league believes New England is worth watching again. Second, Drake May has to take the leap next season. It cannot be just flashes anymore. He has to show more consistency, more production, and prove he can be the quarterback of a winning team. And third, the roster around him still matters. The Patriots have invested in protecting him, but the weapons question is still there. That is why the AJ Brown rumors are so interesting. If they somehow add a true number one receiver, it would change the conversation around this offense entirely. That is why the Patriots are worth talking about right now. They are not just an offseason team waiting for camp. They are a team with expectations building going into next season.
Three-Team Wrap Pressure And Next Steps
SPEAKER_00So that is where things stand with the three major Boston sports storylines. The Celtics are facing a huge offseason after blowing a 3-1 seriously to the Sixers. They have to figure out what to do with Jalen Brown, monitor the Giannis situation, be realistic about LeBron, and improve the front court without losing their identity. The Red Sox are in a tough spot. They are last in the A least in the offense has been near the bottom of the league. Trevor Story is hurt, Marcella Meyer could get a bigger opportunity, and Garrett Crochet's health and mechanics are still something to watch when he returns. And then the Patriots are suddenly back in the spotlight. Their schedule is out, Drake May's expectations are rising, and the AJ Brown rumors give them one of the most interesting what if storylines in Boston Sport right now. So across all three teams, the theme is pretty clear. Boston Sports is not quiet. The Celtics have major offseason decisions. The Red Sox need to fix their offense quickly. And the Patriots are trying to prove they are ready to matter again. Every team has question, every team has pressure. And over the next few weeks, we may start getting some real answers. That is going to do it for this episode of Boss Sabanna Breakdown. Thank you for listening, and I will see you next time.
