last Sunday of the year as we look back to God's faithfulness to us as a church family and in our community all through 2019. 00:03:17.199 --> 00:03:24.560 And I want to do it through the first seven verses of chapter 78 of the Psalms. 00:03:24.800 --> 00:03:27.840 Psalm 78, this is what God's Word says. 00:03:28.560 --> 00:03:31.599 Give ear, O my people, to my teaching. 00:03:31.919 --> 00:03:34.479 Incline your ears to the words of my mouth. 00:03:34.719 --> 00:03:43.199 I will open my mouth in a parable, I will utter dark sayings from of old, things that we have heard and known that our fathers have told us. 00:03:43.439 --> 00:03:54.719 We will not hide them from their children, but tell them to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord and his might, and the wonders that he has done. 00:03:55.039 --> 00:04:16.879 He had established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers to teach their children, that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children, so that they should set their hope in God and not forget the works of God. 00:04:17.439 --> 00:04:24.160 00:04:59.519 The Christmas lights that dot the outline of roofs during holiday time will always take me back to a time when Kim and I were newly married, living in St. 00:04:59.680 --> 00:05:00.240 Louis. 00:05:01.759 --> 00:05:17.519 For a newly married couple, both in school, money, of course, was tight, trying to work different odd jobs to make ends meet, in addition to the part-time jobs that we also held. 00:05:17.759 --> 00:05:25.920 And there was one family in particular that I suppose cared for us in a really unique way. 00:05:26.079 --> 00:05:31.519 They recognized the financial stress that any young couple in our situation might experience. 00:05:31.680 --> 00:05:42.160 And so every Christmas, they paid us an extraordinary amount to put Christmas lights on the outline of their roof. 00:05:42.800 --> 00:05:45.360 Now, they did it really to help us. 00:05:45.759 --> 00:05:52.079 They could have put it on themselves, or they certainly could have paid someone much less than what they paid us. 00:05:52.480 --> 00:06:00.240 But they did us, they did it in order to help us make ends meet in what was an expensive time of the year. 00:06:00.639 --> 00:06:12.399 And every time I see Christmas lights that outline the shapes of roofs, it takes me back to remember that family and their generosity as they demonstrated God's faithfulness to me. 00:06:13.839 --> 00:06:28.319 Well, about a week ago, as we were headed home during the night, one of uh the members of our family in our car made a remark about how pretty one particular house was in its roof outlined with lights. 00:06:28.480 --> 00:06:40.160 And that gave us an opportunity to talk about how God was faithful to use this particular couple so many years ago to provide for us in a remarkable way. 00:06:40.240 --> 00:06:45.279 And it's important, isn't it, to remind ourselves and each other of God's faithfulness. 00:06:46.079 --> 00:06:48.319 It's important because we forget it. 00:06:48.720 --> 00:06:56.000 We forget it when times are difficult or when things are busy or when we're frustrated or when life is going well. 00:06:57.279 --> 00:07:04.079 It's important to remind ourselves and also each other to stir each other up by way of reminder of God's faithfulness. 00:07:04.160 --> 00:07:05.360 And that's what I want to do today. 00:07:05.519 --> 00:07:11.040 I just simply want to say from Psalm 78, God is faithful. 00:07:13.120 --> 00:07:16.319 I wonder if you remember uh the story. 00:07:16.399 --> 00:07:21.680 I've told it before because it's so impactful to me of my first sermon in seminary. 00:07:22.000 --> 00:07:35.360 I had gotten worked up into uh theological lather, and at one point I had exclaimed with great uh fervor, if you'll be faithful to God, he'll be faithful to you. 00:07:35.519 --> 00:07:41.920 And then I sat down after I finished my sermon, and the professor stood up and said, Well, that's not true. 00:07:43.360 --> 00:07:47.439 Uh sheepishly or nervously, I said, Which part? 00:07:48.480 --> 00:07:52.879 And he said, Well, the part where you said, if you'll be faithful to God, he'll be faithful to you. 00:07:52.959 --> 00:07:54.240 It's not true. 00:07:55.040 --> 00:07:58.560 God is faithful, period, full stop. 00:07:59.199 --> 00:08:04.000 In fact, God is faithful in spite of and because of your faithlessness. 00:08:04.240 --> 00:08:16.399 And that was a turning point in my uh journey as a believer, as I began to see God's faithfulness expressed to me and to his people, regardless of my faithfulness. 00:08:17.040 --> 00:08:19.360 And so that's what Psalm 78 says. 00:08:19.839 --> 00:08:25.759 God is faithful, period, full stop, despite our faithlessness. 00:08:25.920 --> 00:08:27.600 So, what does that mean for us? 00:08:27.920 --> 00:08:28.639 Two things. 00:08:28.800 --> 00:08:32.480 The first one, remember to remind yourself. 00:08:33.919 --> 00:08:36.720 Remember to remind yourself of God's faithfulness. commands our fathers to teach their children. 00:08:59.679 --> 00:09:06.480 These phrases that seem strange and, well, even dark, the word dark is used. 00:09:06.799 --> 00:09:12.080 Utter dark sayings from of old sounds cryptic, but it's not. 00:09:12.240 --> 00:09:12.639 Why? 00:09:12.879 --> 00:09:19.519 Because it's it's things that we know, verse 3, things that we have heard and things that we have known that our fathers have told us. 00:09:19.600 --> 00:09:21.200 What's the psalmist saying? 00:09:21.519 --> 00:09:23.919 He's saying, remember to remind yourself. 00:09:24.320 --> 00:09:28.399 Remember to remind yourself of God's faithfulness to you in the past. 00:09:28.639 --> 00:09:34.559 Remember to remind yourself to God's faithfulness to you and to the people that have come before you in the past. 00:09:35.120 --> 00:09:36.720 What might those things be? 00:09:36.879 --> 00:09:40.480 Verse 5: a testimony in Jacob, a law in Israel. 00:09:40.559 --> 00:09:43.279 That's two ways of saying the same thing. 00:09:43.600 --> 00:09:50.480 And the the verses that follow, the next, well, Psalm 78 is 72 verses, 72 verses long. 00:09:50.559 --> 00:09:58.639 So for the next however many verses, the psalmist will recount instance of after instance of God's faithfulness to God's people. 00:09:58.799 --> 00:10:03.440 He'll say, Remember the time that he brought you out of Egypt with a strong and mighty hand. 00:10:04.240 --> 00:10:06.799 Remember when he parted the Red Sea. 00:10:06.960 --> 00:10:10.000 Remember when you whined in the desert and God provided manna. 00:10:10.240 --> 00:10:11.840 Remember, remember, remember. 00:10:12.480 --> 00:10:16.399 It's important to remember to remind ourselves of God's faithfulness. 00:10:16.960 --> 00:10:49.200 Um, and I recognize that we're not um, for the most part, we we aren't um physical descendants of Israel, but we are spiritual descendants of Israel, and we serve the same God, the same God who drove uh the uh Pharaoh's army into the Red Sea and covered them over again, the same God who provided for the people manna from sky, quail that filled the ground, water from the rock, his testimony written in stone by the very finger of God. 00:10:49.440 --> 00:10:50.240 Remember. 00:10:51.200 --> 00:10:53.279 Remember to remind yourself. 00:10:54.399 --> 00:11:02.399 And as you get in the habit of remembering something daily, especially things that you're fond of, it becomes fun to do. 00:11:02.799 --> 00:11:07.440 I uh I have a phone, I wonder if it would pop up on my phone right now. 00:11:07.759 --> 00:11:09.759 It does, it has a reminder there, right there. 00:11:09.919 --> 00:11:15.840 I have a reminder that was sent by one of my children that comes on my phone every morning at 8 a.m. 00:11:16.080 --> 00:11:19.200 that says, I am the best parent in the world. 00:11:20.720 --> 00:11:22.159 So there you have it. 00:11:22.879 --> 00:11:29.039 And I frankly I need that reminder because mostly I don't feel like the best parent in the world. 00:11:29.279 --> 00:11:32.159 In fact, I feel like the worst parent most of the time. 00:11:32.399 --> 00:11:40.240 And it's a really useful way of remembering something that one of my children wants me to remember. 00:11:40.399 --> 00:11:49.360 I wonder what creative way that you can do in your life to remember to remind yourself of God's faithfulness. 00:11:49.840 --> 00:12:00.080 But not only remember to remind yourself of God's faithfulness, that's the first thing, but the second thing is this remember to remind others of God's faithfulness. 00:12:00.320 --> 00:12:26.320 Remember to remind yourself, and remember to remind others, verse four, we will not hide them from their children, but tell the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord and his might and the wonders that he has done, verse six, that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children so Not just remember to remind yourself, but remember to remind others. 00:12:40.879 --> 00:13:00.639 Years ago, Covenant Presbyterian Church, which is the church that I grew up uh uh worshiping in in Homewood, uh, had a capital campaign for building a children's building, and this was their theme verse from uh chapter 78 that the next generation might tell the next generation the glorious deeds of the Lord. 00:13:01.039 --> 00:13:11.600 And the whole message throughout the campaign was one of we're building a building to build a tool to teach the next generation the glorious deeds of the Lord. 00:13:11.840 --> 00:13:12.960 Why is that? 00:13:13.840 --> 00:13:16.799 Because we recognize something that the psalmist is saying. 00:13:16.960 --> 00:13:25.759 The psalmist is saying it's just because you know something doesn't mean your children know it in their heart. 00:13:26.720 --> 00:13:31.519 Just because you know something doesn't mean your neighbor knows something in his or her heart. 00:13:31.919 --> 00:13:33.840 It's not automatic, you see. 00:13:34.000 --> 00:13:46.159 It's something that they need to be reminded of, and then not only reminded of, but to internalize to see that the saving grace of Jesus Christ is something that is available to every single person. 00:13:46.320 --> 00:13:53.120 If they would confess Jesus as Lord with their mouth and believe in their hearts that God raised him from the dead, they shall be what? 00:13:53.679 --> 00:13:54.480 Saved. 00:13:56.879 --> 00:13:59.440 And it takes a village to do it, doesn't it? 00:14:00.080 --> 00:14:37.279 I I one of the most moving uh funeral services I have ever attended was just a handful of years ago, as uh one of uh, well, it was a it was a man with a young family, a few young girls who died in a plane crash, and one of his best friends got up in the service to share, and he got up and he was holding the book of church order, the pres the PCA book of church order, and I thought, well, this is gonna be odd. 00:14:38.399 --> 00:14:59.840 And he opened to the baptismal vow page, and he read that baptismal vow that you asked the congregation, do you, as a congregation, promise to undertake the responsibility of the care and nurture of this covenant child? 00:15:00.240 --> 00:15:10.559 He says, remember, all of you who raised your hands, these are your children now to raise to, now that their father is in heaven. 00:15:12.320 --> 00:15:16.799 And I want to say to you, Lord forbid that. 00:15:17.279 --> 00:15:20.480 But that's our job as a covenant family. 00:15:21.600 --> exercise that I did towards the end of the year, this year, was write a reflection, it was really just a self-reflection for my own benefit of God's faithfulness in 2019 to us as a church on a month-by-month basis. 00:15:56.480 --> 00:16:06.159 And I just went back to January and I wrote all the things that I could remember, the thing, the ways that God was at work in Cahapa Park Church. so it's not just a personal reflection, it's a it's a corporate reflection reflection. 00:16:31.200 --> 00:16:38.240 And each reflection ends with the phrase, thank you, Lord Jesus, for your
