21, 12 through 22. 00:00:13.839 --> 00:00:18.480 Jesus has ridden into town on a donkey. 00:00:18.640 --> 00:00:27.359 The people have cut palm branches and laid them and their cloaks on the ground as he rides into Jerusalem for his final week. 00:00:27.679 --> 00:00:30.800 And as soon as he does, he enters into the temple. 00:00:30.879 --> 00:00:38.719 And we have our passage, which is one of my very favorite passages in all of Scripture because there are very some very curious things going on. 00:00:39.439 --> 00:00:48.560 You've got the sick and the lame and the broken who are made healthy. 00:00:49.679 --> 00:00:54.960 And you've got a healthy seeming fig tree that is made to be broken. 00:00:55.840 --> 00:01:03.920 You've got the children and the uneducated getting it right, and the religious professionals getting it all wrong. 00:01:05.200 --> 00:01:07.840 And we meet all kinds of various people. 00:01:08.079 --> 00:01:14.959 We meet, we encounter Jesus, of course, the religious professionals, the chief priests, scribes, and even the disciples. 00:01:15.040 --> 00:01:17.120 We'll lump them into that category. 00:01:17.680 --> 00:01:21.280 We meet the children who are calling out praise the Lord. 00:01:21.439 --> 00:01:23.280 We meet the lame and the blind. 00:01:23.519 --> 00:01:28.400 We meet a fig tree, and we learn lots of different things. 00:01:29.040 --> 00:01:38.239 The passage uses all these different characters in order to shape for us a narrative and a story whose main plot is this. 00:01:38.799 --> 00:01:42.799 The belief that we need is a gift terribly upset with us because of sin will look on us and approve of all the work we've done and so be happy with us. 00:07:06.399 --> 00:07:08.319 Of course, that's not true. 00:07:08.800 --> 00:07:12.800 Because that's not how our relationship with God works at all. 00:07:13.839 --> 00:07:19.600 Our relationship with God isn't based on all the right things that we do piled up on this believe that that's how God relates to us, then we have a real problem when we read this passage. 00:07:41.040 --> 00:07:49.600 Because this passage, neon light blinks to us that the belief that we really good at making terrible messes of our lives. 00:08:02.639 --> 00:08:07.920 We're really good at taking the good gifts that God's given us and making a terrible mess. 00:08:08.000 --> 00:08:16.879 And the messes that are made by the people in this passage are really descriptive about the kinds of messes that we make in our own lives. 00:08:17.199 --> 00:08:24.319 Let's listen to the uh to the first mess that's made in verse 12, the mess of keeping rules. 00:08:24.480 --> 00:08:28.959 Now, all the rule followers in the room will bristle a little bit by me saying that. 00:08:29.120 --> 00:08:35.279 But so I'll just go ahead and tell you what I mean by keeping rules is at the expense of righteousness. 00:08:35.440 --> 00:08:37.120 Okay, so you can feel better. 00:08:37.360 --> 00:08:38.799 Okay, verse 12. 00:08:39.039 --> 00:08:47.360 As Jesus entered the temple and drove out all who sold and bought in the temple, he overturned the tables of the money talking about his impending death on and off, and now he's come into this, come into the temple, and he's taken his anger and wrath out of everybody who seems to be keeping all the right rules. 00:09:08.879 --> 00:09:17.120 If we've read the Old Testament at all, we understand that God requires tremendous sacrifice in order to have fellowship with him. 00:09:17.840 --> 00:09:29.840 Daily sacrifice, weekly sacrifice, monthly sacrifice, seasonal sacrifice, annual sacrifice, over and over and over and over, God was requiring sacrifices. 00:09:30.559 --> 00:09:35.120 And so, where were you to get the uh get the animals to sacrifice? 00:09:35.360 --> 00:09:36.720 Around the temple. 00:09:37.200 --> 00:09:41.519 So technically, these people weren't doing anything terribly wrong. He says, My house is to be called a house of prayer, but you've made it a den of robbers. 00:09:55.679 --> 00:10:02.639 Now we need to understand something about Israel's purpose and the construction of the temple in order to make sense of what he says. 00:10:02.960 --> 00:10:22.960 Do you remember Israel's purpose, the way that God, the reason God saved Israel, he says, I'm gonna bless you to be a blessing, so that in you all the nations of the world would be blessed, so that he strategically placed them at the geographical crossroads where they were, which is why they still fight over that land mass today. 00:10:23.279 --> 00:10:30.720 Strategically placed them at this crossroads so that as people would come through that were from other nations, they would see, my, how these people are different. 00:10:30.879 --> 00:10:34.320 Their God must be different and come to know and love him. 00:10:34.960 --> 00:10:45.679 And in order to support that, God instructed the people of Israel to build the temple with an outer court for the Gentiles to come and pray. 00:10:46.240 --> 00:10:51.279 This outer court was the largest space of the temple by far. 00:10:51.679 --> 00:10:57.200 And it's where everybody from all the nations could come and pray to God. 00:10:59.840 --> 00:11:16.080 Now, this week that Jesus comes into Jerusalem is Passover, and Jewish historians would estimate that at the time of Passover, around 250,000 lambs were sold in this court alone. 00:11:16.320 --> 00:11:20.000 Not to mention the pigeons that are talked about in this passage. 00:11:21.120 --> perhaps you've experienced this in your adulthood, and uh you went on a road trip with your family, and in the back seat you sat with your brother or sister, or brothers or sisters, or whoever it was, 00:15:40.000 --> 00:15:46.000 Well, Jesus tells us by introducing us to a poor fig tree. 00:15:46.399 --> 00:15:51.519 In verse 18, in the morning as he was returning to the city, he became hungry. 00:15:51.679 --> 00:15:56.480 And seeing a fig tree by the wayside, he went to it and found nothing on it but leaves. 00:15:56.639 --> 00:16:03.440 Now, in other books of the Bible, other gospel accounts, it gives us another added little phrase there, especially in the book of Mark. 00:16:03.519 --> 00:16:06.960 It says, Because it was not the season for figs. 00:16:08.559 --> 00:16:14.159 And he said to the fig tree, May no fruit ever come from you again. 00:16:15.039 --> 00:16:17.039 And the fig tree withered at once. 00:16:17.279 --> 00:16:19.919 Now it's really looking bad for Jesus. 00:16:20.399 --> 00:16:25.440 We can understand him getting upset with people and overturning tables, but a poor fig tree?
