00:02:19.120 --> 00:02:23.680 Um there are times where we feel like we're having miscommunication with God. 00:02:24.080 --> 00:02:31.919 Like we're trying to talk to Him, we're trying to pray, we're trying to listen, we're trying to understand, but for some reason, communication is not going as well as we'd like it. 00:02:32.080 --> 00:02:35.919 And we're gonna look at a parable of Jesus that speaks into that. 00:02:36.479 --> 00:02:38.719 Now let me set the context for us. 00:02:38.879 --> 00:02:44.400 Okay, Mark chapter 4, right after Mark chapter 3, that we spent the last three weeks looking at. 00:02:44.479 --> 00:02:51.439 And really there were four different groups of people that interacted with Jesus in Mark chapter 3. 00:02:51.680 --> 00:02:55.360 Okay, they were the disciples, they were all in, they're committed, they're following. 00:02:55.840 --> 00:03:01.360 There's the crowd that really seems to like Jesus, they're following, they're listening, they seem very pro-Jesus. 00:03:01.759 --> 00:03:08.800 Then you've got the Pharisees and the scribes that are plotting his murder and saying that he's possessed by Satan. 00:03:09.120 --> 00:03:14.240 And then you also have his own family, his physical family, and they think he's gone nuts. 00:03:14.560 --> 00:03:21.039 So you could say four different types of responses to Jesus in Mark chapter three. 00:03:21.120 --> 00:03:27.919 And remember, part of what happened in Mark chapter three is he appointed the 12 apostles that they might be with him and he might send them out to preach. 00:03:28.000 --> 00:03:28.960 Remember that? 00:03:29.360 --> 00:03:37.039 So I think part of what's got to be going through the disciples' minds is, hey, Jesus, I mean, you're the best teacher we've ever heard. 00:03:37.360 --> 00:03:40.800 And even you are getting a mixed bag of results from these people. 00:03:41.199 --> 00:03:48.400 So when you talk about sending us out, we gotta be honest, that's a little bit intimidating because how are people gonna respond to us? 00:03:48.879 --> 00:03:54.879 And so, in response to that line of thinking, that concern, Jesus is gonna give this parable. 00:03:55.120 --> 00:03:58.960 So let's look at Mark chapter 1, uh 4, and I'll start in verse 1. 00:03:59.680 --> 00:04:10.560 Again he began to teach beside the sea, and a very large crowd gathered around him, so that he got into a boat and he sat in it on the sea, and the whole crowd was beside the sea on the land. 00:04:10.639 --> 00:04:13.360 And he was teaching them many things in parables. 00:04:13.599 --> 00:04:22.319 And his teaching he said to them, Listen, a sower went out to sow, and as he sowed, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured it. 00:04:22.480 --> 00:04:34.639 Other seed fell on the rocky ground, where it did not have much soil, and immediately it sprang up, since it had no depth of soil, and when the sun rose, it was scorched, and since it had no root it withered away. 00:04:34.879 --> 00:04:40.240 Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no grain. 00:04:40.480 --> 00:04:47.920 And other seeds fell into good soil and produced grain, growing up and increasing and yielding thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold. 00:04:48.160 --> 00:04:51.759 And he said, He who has ears to hear, let him hear. 00:04:52.639 --> 00:05:02.560 And when he was alone, those around him with the twelve asked him about the parables, and he said to them, To you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God. 00:05:02.720 --> 00:05:15.759 But for those outside everything is in parables, so that they may indeed see but not perceive, and may indeed hear, but not understand, lest they should turn and be forgiven. 00:05:16.000 --> 00:05:19.600 And he said to them, Do you not understand this parable? 00:05:20.000 --> 00:05:22.480 How then will you understand all the parables? 00:05:22.720 --> 00:05:27.839 The sower sows the word, and these are the ones along the path where the word is sown. 00:05:28.079 --> 00:05:43.360 When they hear, Satan immediately comes and takes away the word that is sown in them, and these are the ones sown on the rocky ground, the ones who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with joy, and they have no root in themselves, but endure for a while. 00:05:43.519 --> 00:05:48.959 Then when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately they fall away. 00:05:49.120 --> 00:05:52.240 And others are the ones sown among thorns. 00:05:52.399 --> 00:06:04.079 They are those who hear the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. 00:06:04.720 --> 00:06:14.639 But those that were sown on the good soil are the ones who hear the word and accept it and bear fruit thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold. 00:06:15.199 --> 00:06:22.959 So Jesus once again, the crowd is so large, crushing in on him, he gets into a boat, the floating pulpit, and he's gonna teach them this parable. 00:06:23.120 --> 00:06:28.720 And notice he starts out by saying, pay attention! Listen, this is really important what I'm about to say. 00:06:28.959 --> 00:06:33.279 And it starts with it's a gray and example that they would have been very familiar with. 00:06:33.439 --> 00:06:34.480 A sower goes out. 00:06:34.560 --> 00:06:42.800 And the sower could represent God, it could represent a human representative of God, a Bible study leader, a preacher, a teacher, an evangelist. 00:06:42.959 --> 00:06:46.800 And he's just throwing the seed seemingly indiscriminately. 00:06:47.199 --> 00:06:50.480 Some of it falls on the path that he's walking on. 00:06:50.720 --> so a bird comes representing Satan and it snatches the word away. 00:07:03.439 --> 00:07:04.959 That can happen to us. 00:07:05.439 --> 00:07:09.120 But some of the soil that falls on what we would call shallow soil. 00:07:09.199 --> 00:07:12.079 There's a little bit of topsoil, but right underneath it, there's rocks. 00:07:12.240 --> 00:07:17.279 So there's a tiny root, can't go very deep, springs up fast, looks great, looks happy, looks excited. 00:07:17.360 --> 00:07:21.279 But when the sun comes, when hardship comes, it withers away. 00:07:21.680 --> 00:07:24.959 Other goes into soil, looks a little bit better. 00:07:25.279 --> 00:07:28.160 Looks like it's growing, but the problem is there's thorns. 00:07:28.560 --> 00:07:33.600 In a sense, they choke out the little plant levels of fruitfulness, some 30, some 60, some 100fold, but some bear fruit. 00:07:42.240 --> 00:07:45.839 And so then later, Jesus is with the committed followers. 00:07:46.000 --> 00:07:50.399 The it was just a matter of time before a little bit of hardship came up, a little bit of persecution. 00:09:10.480 --> 00:09:13.360 They responded, great, I got Jesus, man, he makes my life better.
