I think so. I think so. So that'll be fun. Uh all the people who do tune in to the I know we have a lot of Chicago, we have a lot of Chicago vendors, don't we? Big in Chicago, huge. What are you most excited about with the national?

Going. Going because I've actually never been. I've been to Fanatics Fest, which was uh a lot of fun, a lot of a lot of that that's like that's almost to me less of a card show and more of like an event, like just a crazy event, tons of athletes, tons of famous people, actors, um, that go and they they have little talks like this, but on stage, and people are in their sign in for people, and it's like it's uh it's it's really crazy and really cool. Um so I've I've been to several shows. That the Fanatics Fest uh has been the biggest one I've been to, but I've never been to the national. And so I'm just I'm excited to go and experience it and see what uh what it's all about. I hear some some crazy stories about it, so I I'm excited. What about you?

I I'm excited as well. I know the boss in there has has uh told us to expect uh something unexpected there. I mean it's it's a huge show from my understanding, and I know that, but um I don't know what to expect. I've never been to the national. All the shows I've really been to have been local, and they've been they've been good, but um definitely not on the level of the national. Yeah. National everybody uh everybody goes.

Yeah, yeah. No, it's uh it's a it's a lot for sure. Um throughout the podcast, we're gonna have a couple different segments that we have. We're gonna we're gonna play games again. Game time is probably my favorite time.

Yes, we're we're talking about some product spotlights that are in the shop now. Those are nice. Uh these are magnetic touches. Uh they they help protect your cards, but uh they're color matched to everything. Yeah, this here is a Jamar Chase uh superfractor. Um I'm not gonna have you zoom in or anything, uh but uh those are really nice. Those are in the shop, and these one touches that we have, uh you can actually put a card in a sleeve and then put it in the magnetic one.

Perfect fit ones. I love those. I hate having them rattle around in the one touch. Those are really nice. And then I do like the the little they open up kind of like like a little book and you just put it in there, and I like them. Uh because uh for for PC, for your PC, I kind of think that they look really nice.

The perfect way to display your cards uh are in one of these. Uh especially with PSA being shut down. If you don't if you don't want to send your cards off to PSA on that uh that regular uh submission, uh we've talked many, many times about PSA. We'll we'll skip that as of right now. But uh this is a perfect way to display these right now. So I I think that's one reason why you should come in the shop and pick one of those up. Also, the there's uh the sleeve bags that we have. This one isn't displayed with one, but uh they actually fit true to the magnetic one touch. Yeah. Uh so it looks sleeker. Uh I think it protects them better.

Congratulations, Brady. I just uh I stopped by your shop the other day with grand opening, didn't get to spend much time there, but uh you're doing something that I may not ever get to do. Uh it's always been a lifelong dream of maybe owning a shop, but uh don't know that I'll ever get to do that. I at least work at uh a shop and the shop has been very good to me.

Um, so let's get into it. What are we getting into?

Well, there's uh well we talked about the national there.

Let me ask you something. I know the story, okay, but I want to know how you got involved in the hobby.

SPEAKER_02 6:56

Okay, sure. Um, you want me tell you that right now?

SPEAKER_00 7:01

Yeah, right now. Okay. That'd be something good to put on the podcast, I think.

Okay. Well, let's do that then. Um grew up playing baseball, always played baseball, played a few different sports, uh, but baseball definitely played the longest. Um and you know, went to a couple Braves games. It wasn't something that we went to all the time or anything, but went to a few Braves games, which was always fun. Um and I think I was like 12 or 13. It was around that time I had a uh a birthday party, 12th or 13th year birthday party, I don't know, somewhere around there. And someone got me a box of cards, and I thought it was really cool, and it was just a bunch of junk wax, right? You know, so you know, come to find out, they probably didn't really spend anything on me. So thanks for that. Um, but back then I thought it was really cool. Yeah, um, it was it was one of my friends who um also played baseball on my uh on my team for a little bit, and so he got me this box of cards. I mean, like one of the five-row boxes, and as I'm a kid, I'm like, I okay, I've never collected cards before, and this looks like the most cards I've ever seen in my entire life. And I remember I I would go through those cards, um, and I didn't know a bunch of players from like from that era, the junk wax era. I just knew a couple of like the the big names, and so there was tons of I would look up like Hall of Famers from that era, and then I'd go through and try to pull them out, and then um, and then I'd learn someone new, and I'm like, oh, he's a Hall of Famer too, and then I'd go back through all of my ones again. I went through I probably went through that same five row box, you know, a hundred times. Um, and then so that's kind of what got me into it, and then I um I went to Walmart back when blasters were like fifteen, twenty bucks. Oh wow, not like forty dollars. Bring back those days, please. I know, and uh so they they were super cheap. Uh and I bought cards there uh a few times, uh just kind of just starting to get into it. And I bought this one, and um again, this is me just learning about it, didn't know anything about it, didn't know parallels, didn't know any of that stuff, right? Right. Um, and there was one card in there that was really different uh than all the other ones. It was blue, and I was like, this is a cool blue blue border card, and I didn't know what it was. Well, it was uh one of the Walmart blue border cards that they used to do. I think maybe they still do them, but it was like the light blue and looked it looked really cool. And it was a guy named Mike Trout, and it was his uh second year, maybe third year. I think it was twenty it was 2013. Um it was a 2013 product, and so I uh I thought it was really cool, and that day we actually went to um we saw my uncle, and he was like, Oh my gosh, that's a good card, Mike Trout, he's like one of the best players right now. You really need to take care of that card, and so I was like, Okay, so I took care of it, put it in a top loader, and um I didn't touch it for years, and didn't you know I casually collect it, I'd say, for four years before I got the opportunity to work here. And then I started working here coming up on four years now. I think October will be four years, which is kind of crazy. Um and so worked here for a while, and then I was like, you know what, I'm gonna send a couple cards to PSA. I'd never got anything graded before. Um and I sent that card in that I pulled that kind of got me into it, and uh that was why my Mike Trout was my favorite player because it was the first cool card that I rem like remember pulling myself, and um and it got a PSA 10, and I was proud of 13-year-old me for keeping that uh that card in good shape for those y'all should.

I was thank you. So that's kind of that's kind of how I kind of got into it and uh why Trout is my favorite player. That's cool. And uh what about you? What about you? Did they have cards back then? Yeah, yeah, they did.

In color, no way. It's wow.

It's interesting your story though. Uh you got probably one of the best athletes of that time. Yeah. Uh when you opened what perceivably was your first pack. Yeah. And I've seen a lot of people in the store too, like they hit big on their first pack and they're just like hooked.

And maybe Isn't that weird?

Maybe, you know, to detriment at times because they just they keep going in and thinking it's they never hit something big again.

SPEAKER_02 11:36

Yeah. Or it takes a lot of money to hit something big again. It is weird. I've noticed that too. It's like first or beginner's luck or something, you know. It's kind of the hobby can be cruel sometimes.

That's awesome though, that uh, you know, your story not only includes you know how you got into the hobby, but also your PC. Yeah. Mine's a little different. I I started um buying baseball cards I I can remember in the 80s. My first yes, eighties, night 1980. Wow. I can remember uh the first set that I had was the Topps uh 1988 set. Okay. And uh so Tom Clavin's rookie. Yeah. Um and I was a big Braves fan. Yep. Um my dad As am I? Yeah, you're a Braves fan? Yes. Yeah. Yes. We'll just skip. Okay, we'll skip. But uh I was a big Braves fan. My dad had taken me to mini games, just like you you had talked about, you'd went to a few games. I can remember really every game that we went to, though, they were playing the Cincinnati Reds. And I don't know, he lived up in Ohio for a number of years, and I don't I don't know if that's why he took us to see the Reds or whatever. Yeah. Um, but I can remember seeing the Reds probably my first five or six games. That's really funny. Um I remember the name Did he beat the Reds? Well, a few times.

I can't remember. I do remember one one time they were playing the Reds and they were behind, and my dad decided to take us to the car and go home, and the Braves later came back and won that game.

My dad said, We're not leaving the game early again.

Um 1988 was the first set that I I collected. Um, my brothers were probably a little more interested in it than I was, but I started playing baseball as well. Yeah. And uh any part of baseball that I I uh could get into, I did. So collecting sports cards was also a part of that. Um Griffe was my favorite player at the time. I think that's probably because everybody's favorite player at the time was King Griffey Jr.

I think Griffey I mean he he just brought something different than than everybody else did. Certain coolness to baseball, I feel like. Yeah. Um, and so I mean, I didn't live through that, of course, that was a long time ago. Um, but you know, seeing old clips and stuff um is pretty pretty cool. I like the part where uh the the time when he ran in front and caught the ball, stole it from his dad, you know. Mm-hmm. That's it it just it seemed fun, it seemed like a fun era. You got to grow up in the fun era of baseball, I feel like.

Yeah. 90s were were incredible, really. Um Griffe and and Barry Bonds and and then the the home run race with with Sosa and Maguire. That's just I mean, I think even though they had a strike in '94, um really what saved baseball at that point was that home run uh chase with Sosa and Maguire. And and the big card I always wanted from that era was the 89 Upper Deck King Griffey Jr. rookie.

And I've mentioned that many times on the podcast, but uh I'd never owned that card in any condition uh up until recently. We were talking about it as our boss came in. Yep, and at the time he he was not our boss, but he had a few of them, and I started saying, Man, I really would have liked to have that card uh in a PSA 10. I said, but now at this point I would just take whatever because PSA 10s have gotten up to like five grand. Yeah. And um I went in the back, came back out, and there was George holding that card, and and he gave it to me. Yeah. And he that's awesome. Really made my childhood at that moment. So it was fun.

That's awesome. That is a lot of fun. Um I'm kind of surprised you can recall all of those details. Yeah.

So that was fun. That was fun. Um let me ask you, you know, we were talking about wins. Yeah. Do you think, you know, back when I was growing up, if you got to 500 home runs, you were pretty much a surefire Hall of Famer. Sure. If you got to 300 wins, 3,000 strikeouts. Do you think that that will change a little bit?

SPEAKER_02 25:45

The pitching side of things a hundred percent will change. 100%. I think it already has because nobody's getting like you have to pitch a lot to have 3,000 strikeouts. Pitchers today are not pitching as much, like, not even close. And and like wins wins, and this could, you know, this could people could hate me for this, but since I've only known this era of baseball, I feel like wins don't even matter. Did wins hold a lot more stock back in the day? Because to me, wins is like, yeah, maybe it's a fine stat, but I don't think it's like, oh, this is for sure, like put all my stock in wins, you know? Because you have people like Skeens. I mentioned Jacob deGrom, I think it was when he was on like was it 2021 uh somewhere around there when he was on the Mets, like just the best pitcher on the face of the planet and couldn't get a win because the Mets were so bad that year. I can't remember what year that was. Um and so to me, wins aren't like a big deal, but maybe I'm maybe they used to be, and I'm totally wrong about that.

To to answer your question, you asked me if they were more important in my era. I believe they were. Okay. I believe they were. Um I think any if you have the conversation now, I believe it should be like a a a team stat.

I agree. I mean, but like so do you think that do you think it they should have been? Because you said they were more important back then, but you think they should have been, or do you think it's always been the same like argument like it should be a team thing?

SPEAKER_00 27:19

I think the starters had more control of Because they were in a lot longer? Because they were I mean, you get to five innings, if somebody makes it past five innings anymore, yeah, then you know it's it's a rarity, really. It's it's crazy. I mean, a a quality start, and this has always been quality start is if you get to six innings and allow three runs or less. Yeah, which so I mean there's not many people getting to to that six inning mark anymore. And three three runs, if you give up three runs and four innings, they're probably yanking you now. Yeah. So that's you know, that that is different than it was.

Yeah, agreed. I think the home run question, I think that may start changing, but I think I think that that has to have a lot more time to change. Um, because I think people are still kind of set on like, oh, 500 home runs 100% on going in the Hall of Fame. I think with time that will slowly change though. And the reason why is because pitching, uh like we you know, if we talk about Jacob Mizarowski, and he is throwing so fast, and hitters are like batting average is going down and down and down and down and down. And with the the way that uh like advancements that people are making and just like the medical field and like the different things, like you can you can you know have a surgery and be back way quicker than you used to could and like the like mechanics getting better and stuff like that, all that stuff is getting better to where him throwing 104 at 105, like it's nothing. Maybe in five more years, most pitchers. I mean, that seems crazy, but like with how how like things are getting better every year, maybe a hundred like one or two will might be, oh yeah, that's a normal fastball, you know. I think it will cap itself at something. Like the human body just can't get past a certain point, I feel like. But I feel like more people will get to that point with how the the just the technical technological advancements that we're making. And so I think that that's just gonna, of course, hurt batting averages, hurt home run totals, hurt those numbers. So I think the new Hall of Fame number, I don't know, maybe it's 400 home runs or something. But I think that that I think stats will change over time like that. Um because pitching's just crazy. Like if I mean think about if you're facing if most people are like Jacob Mizerowski out there, you know. That's that's crazy. And and not getting hurt, or if they do get hurt and they have Tommy John, they're back like way quicker, you know?

Um I I think there's very few people right now that can get to that 500 home run mark. I think so too. Um Stanton um is close because he's close. Yeah. Um, and then Aaron Judge, Shohe Otani, the you know, the big names. Um, but I I think it's very few the number of of players that are going to reach that mark. So that's the one.

I think I think you have Judge, Stanton, and Trout. I think all three of those guys make it. Didn't mention him. I think all three of those guys make it. Yeah. What do you think?

I don't think that uh Ronald uh can stay healthy long enough. Yeah. I mean it's one injury after another. Yeah. Uh but anyway, I think maybe some of the Hall of Fame numbers, the those markers that are just guaranteed, I think that they will start to come down, just like you said. I think so too. We do have uh we don't have much time, but we're going to do something that for this next show. Yeah. Uh let's just mention it to them and we're going to do this off screen and uh let y'all know. Uh, you know, I'm gonna get this uh, you know, Mike Trout uh downtown or autograph or something, you know. I'm definitely gonna get a trial card. Over what kind of time uh kind of time period are you wanting to do? Like six months? I would say too long.
