– Introduction to Dr. B & Purpose-Driven Success
Jaclyn StromingerWell, hello, everybody, and welcome to another amazing episode of Unstoppable Success. I am your host. I actually should probably say hostess, but host Jaclyn Strominger. And on this podcast, you know, we hear from amazing individuals, leaders, and professionals who shared their insights, tips, and strategies to have unstoppable success. And today I've got to say it with Augusto, Dr. B's in the house. And let me tell you a little bit about Dr. B because I'm so like because I know him personally. But let me just tell you a little bit about Dr. B. So, you know, one of the things that he does, his work focuses on helping people align three things that too often live separately faith, identity, and economic responsibility through coaching, speaking, instructor programs like the six-figure align provider program. He guides people through a practical process of transformation. Dr. B, I could go on, but tell us all about you. So welcome to the unstoppable success.
Dr. Brian E. ArnoldThank you for having me. I'm so excited to be on your show and be able to talk and hopefully, you know, inspire, motivate people, knowing that they got to go back and do some work, right? Because there's one thing to be able to say, hey, yeah, the guy was great. And you know, he helped me, made me do this. But if you don't go back and do something about it, this is just a waste of your half hours. So the goal is that you, you know, you hear something that will spark your interest. You hear something that will make you go take action. Because unstoppable success doesn't happen without action.
Jaclyn StromingerRight. So talk a little bit about your companies and what you're doing, because that what you're doing is helping other people have great success.
Dr. Brian E. ArnoldYou know, it is. And as I get older, I just turned 61 last month.
Jaclyn StromingerAnd congratulations, happy birthday.
Dr. Brian E. ArnoldThank you. And so as I get older, I hope I get more mature. I hope I am able to help folks uh realize that there is so much in this world that they can have that they can do. And sometimes we just get stuck in these belief systems that either I'm not enough or I can't do it, or you know, I don't have the right people around me. And and they believe that they're not enough. And
– Alignment, Identity & Becoming Who You’re Meant to Be
Dr. Brian E. ArnoldI want folks to know that they are absolutely enough. You know, I have several several things that I got going on, and some one of them I'm I'm a I'm a dad, you know, I'm a I'm a husband, I'm a grandpa. I have 16 grandkids, and so we spend a lot of funkids, 16 grandkids, and so yeah, and it this and all of my kids haven't had kids yet. So we're gonna see what happens, what we end up with. But for now, this is I'm living my best life, I'm having fun, I'm helping people. You know, I have a I have a community called Becoming the Person Universe, and becoming the person universe is all about helping people become that very best that God put them on this earth to do. And then I, you know, through that, you know, I like talking about alignment, you know, alignment in your faith, in your
– The “Become, Do, Have” Success Principle
Dr. Brian E. Arnoldhealth, and your finance, and your identity, all these things that I think we we it I was one of the people who did it. Like, I want to go for business, I want to make my business great, I want to get all the business principles, I want to go to business conferences, and then I don't know, have any clue on how to work on myself so I can become that person who can excel in business. And so the the you you alluded to the six-figure alignment program, and that's a new one I started that actually has guarantees. Like, I don't want you paying me until I help you make money. And so, you know, we start out. Well, you're gonna have to do some kind of commitment at first because I need to know you're there. But after that, like you make 25 grand and then then I then you pay me some money. Then you make when you hit 250 grand, then you can pay me some more money. But if you don't hit it, then you're not paying me because I want to align those those principles of I guess we call it the the will of life of who you are, align it within all what you do, and then you get to have. So it's a be do have principle that says, you know, I got to become that person before I can start having. And I've been through so many things in my life where I try to have, then I try now, I got it, right? Because in America, we can have credit and we can go have all these things, but we have to things that we can that we should be doing in order to have them. And then all of a sudden now we're trying to become that person, and it just all uh messes up and falls apart. And so we want to help people do that.
Jaclyn StromingerOkay, so I have a couple things I want to first of all, all right. So alignment, okay. You know, you shared, and and obviously that you realize that you have to get that. So what was there like a an aha moment for you when you were like, I think I'm out of alignment?
Dr. Brian E. ArnoldYes, there are several, if if I can think of, I don't know if there's one in particular, but there's several where I would say, Oh, I'll just give you an example of having, you know, there was a time I'm teaching high school, I'm teaching, you know, and I decided, and I grew up a special aid kid. And so as a special ed kid, I I have zero desire to go to college at all. My mom's trying to convince me. I happen to be a pretty good athlete, so I'm getting scholarship offers to go to school. And I'm like, no, mom, I'm going to stunt school. I'm going to be a stunt man. I don't want to have anything to do with that. So I'm not going to college.
– Growing Up With Limiting Beliefs & Overcoming Self-Doubt
Dr. Brian E. ArnoldAnd she begged me, she said, you know, right, if if uh if you go to college, I'm going to buy you a Jeep. If you just go to college, I'm going to buy you a Jeep when you graduate. And so for me at 18 years old, I guess that was enough because that's what I wanted. And so and it didn't hate running. You know, I said, okay, I'm an athlete. I like running. I'll go, I'll go run track. I got a scholarship, but I'm going to go to school close to not as close to Hollywood as I possibly can. Because after a year, if I don't like this stuff, at least I'll be where I want to be. And so I go to school. I end up loving it, enjoying it. I'm doing it. I'm still waiting for my Jeep. You know, my you know, got me to go to school, didn't buy me the carrot that she dangled in front of me, but I'm okay. And so now I, you know, but there were still limitations. Like I cannot spell this dyslexia and everything does not allow me to spell. So I I graduate from college and I come back to Colorado where I grew up to be a teacher. And they tell me if you can't pass the spelling test, you can't be a PE teacher. I'm like, this is stupid. That doesn't make any sense. Why do I have to spell on a P or whatever it is, in order to be in order to be you know, blow a whistle and teach people how to do athletics? So I went back to California. I end up getting my master's in technology and I start teaching at the university. So now I'm working full. I didn't quit the high school yet. I'm just doing the university and the high school at the same time. So I I go to the BMW dealership because now I'm big time, right? I got two full-time jobs, you know. I got a couple of kids at this point, and I can't really afford life. So I go to the BMW deal. I'm gonna
– The BMW Story: Looking Successful Before Becoming Successful
Dr. Brian E. Arnoldget a three series, and they convinced me to walk out of there with a 750il, you know, used BMW that I had no business, you know, talking about have and and not have a business. It had a little antenna on the back because this was the beginning of cell phones at a dollar a minute that I give.
Jaclyn StromingerSo I you have like a sticker on your forehead that said gullible. Oh my gosh, because that does not seem like you.
Dr. Brian E. ArnoldIt is so yeah, because that wasn't me then. And so I literally drive to the university every time, right? Because I'm the dude now, right? And I'm driving around the parking lot and I'm doing this and waving at people and stopping, saying hi, picking up the phone that's not talking to anybody, like I'm talking on the phone. Like, I have now arrived in in this whole process and I'm going, wait, I have not nowhere near become the person not to deserve this car, or even to act this way. Like, who am I that's acting like I'm some big time dude, you know, that there's a professor at a at a university.
Jaclyn StromingerThat's a that was like a vision in your head of what a big time dude does or did, or right?
Dr. Brian E. ArnoldYeah, I probably look like a drug dealer. They're probably wondering that's what he really is. He's not he hasn't arrived at anything, and that was a pivotal moment, I think, for me, once I realized that I couldn't afford it, once I realized that I wasn't that guy, that I need to start working on me. And you know, whether I went to like a Tony Robbins seminar or went to who, whatever it was, I started beginning my journey of personal development and saying, wait a minute, who is this guy that that is now trying to act like he's this this great person and he isn't doesn't have the tools to be able to do it? And I think for me that was kind of the start of okay, now let's now let's now let's evolve into who I am now, still going through stuff, still making mistakes, still, but at least I know if I'm going to become that person, I have to work on me first.
Jaclyn StromingerSo, listeners, that's actually a really, a really key point. And I feel like it's an underlying theme, you know, in the things that that I talk about a lot, even with our book, Trading True North. It's it's whether you're even reading, you know, the five
– Why Personal Development Changes Everything
Jaclyn Stromingerhour, the 5 a.m. club, or maybe you're reading whatever what atomic habits, whatever the book is, right? The underlying theme is take care of you, have to be able to develop you first. You you have to develop you. You have to, and and would you say the keys to developing you are clarity, alignment, and knowing, you know, and for what you're talking about, I think it's it also brings in faith, right?
Dr. Brian E. ArnoldYeah, and the the other thing that I think that when you're working on you, you have to also work on relationships. Our relationships are everything. Yeah, clarity had to be. Yeah, and and it has to be with people that are not in the same circles that you're running in. Because the people that are in the same circles that you're running in right now are right where you're at, or they're either going to bring you down like crabs in a basket, or they're going to just, you know, they're not uh have the ability to help you see bigger future, to help you see what you can do. And so for folks that just
– Why Your Relationships Determine Your Future
Dr. Brian E. Arnoldstick around and don't find other people to hang around or to be in association with, then they they wonder, well, why am I stuck? Why am I not moving forward? And so you have to reach out and find folks.
Jaclyn StromingerSo key, so so obviously that's like speaking my language, like music to my ears. But what I would but I would also say then, would you also then recommend that people almost have like multiple circles, right? So like circle one, right, or circle A could be your family, right? Those are the people that you know love them or not, you're a lot you're aligned with them because they're your family, right? Then you have, as you said, like that current circle where you are. Maybe those are your friends, people that you currently have that you know. But then the next circle is the I'll call it the reach circle, right? It's the it's the it's the growth circle. These are the people that you have found yourself, that you have we because I I I truly believe what you're saying is so important. You need to actually find those people in the circle up here, like they're you know, where you want to grow to that you want to connect with.
unknownYeah.
Dr. Brian E. ArnoldWell, and yeah, you have to have exactly what you're saying. You have to have people that are in different areas of your life, like mentors and people I hang around with, you know, for spiritual and faith things are going to be different than the people that I hang around maybe for business. If it's one person and that's your like only guy you go to, then that's worship because that is like you're thinking you're putting them on such a pedestal that they can't do it. So, what is like what is your relationship if you're a parent, right? I want to I want to hang out with some really cool dads that know what they're doing, that I that I think are doing a great job with their kids, or an older dad who has an example of how kids were successful. I don't want to hang out with the dad where their kids are all jacked up and messed up and you know on the Maury Povert show, I guess. So, you know, it's right. Those those aren't my my ideal dads that I want to hang out with. I want to hang out with men and women that are doing stuff. I want to hang out with people like you that will inspire me to do better, that will level me to better. And somehow we think that that if they're up at this level, that they won't want to interact with us. And it's totally opposite because when you find somebody who's successful and they they enjoy and they know what they did to be successful, they want to share it. They they absolutely want to share it, but you can't go in there going, you know, like you, you're the deal. You go in there like humble and say, wait a minute, you know, can you spend some time with me? Can I take you to lunch? And then you pay for lunch, even though you go in there thinking, well, they got a million dollars, they should be able to buy me lunch. No, you go in there and you you find you're scrambling for money, you go find some, just don't go to the most expensive restaurant that you know, don't go to Eddie V's and spend $100 on lunch with somebody that if you can't afford it, but they will go to but you know, Brian, you what you just said, I think is so important.
Jaclyn StromingerYou know, I I actually have I'm working on this whole seven-day relationship capital ROI challenge. And one of the things that I I just recorded this, one of the modules the action item is go and find, literally go and find and reach out to three or four people that are in circles that you want to be in and reach out and connect with them. Pick
– Mentorship, Networking & Relationship Capital
Jaclyn Stromingeruse your phone that you don't use as a phone, but use it as a phone and reach out and connect with them. There's so many ways you can find different people's telephone numbers. So I I love that you said that because it's so true. At the end of the day, I would say most people want to help other people.
Dr. Brian E. ArnoldThey do. Yeah, absolutely. I and here's the here's the key is once you do reach out, and if they say no or they say yeah, you'll most likely you might have to go through a couple people that are busy and it might be out in the future. But show up and be present. So many people who come, they want to meet with me, and then they're picking up their phone and they're texting while I'm talking to them, or they're you're like, Are you kidding me? Are you what what is wrong with you? Show up with a a notebook, show up with and and ask one or two questions and let them talk. They don't need to know all about you unless they ask about you. If they ask about you, and then you need to get into I I guess where other people are is they think that all coaching should be for free, and I don't think that that is the fact. You you if you truly want somebody to then begin coaching you, and there's a difference between a mentor and a coach, a mentor does it for free, a coach has you pay for them, and there's some things that you need to do and you need to learn that you're gonna have to put some money into it to be able to do it, and so uh whether it's buying more books that you need to read, you got to spend money on the books, you know, or if you don't have money right now, go to the library, you can get some of the books because you're being you know mentored from those people who wrote the books. But truly to be in some of the groups, some of the networks, some of the places that you can be, some of the communities that you can get into, you're gonna have to put up a little bit of money to do it. But there's ways where you know, you like the like the program I have where there's a guarantee. I'm gonna show you how to make money so that you can pay for the program. There are other things that you can do in order to get the money or use your your time. Hey, I'm gonna go do this for you on a Saturday. I'm gonna show up at your, you know, your foundation or your your charity, and I'm gonna work all day at your charity. So I and then can I have 15 minutes of your time? Yeah, okay, or half hour of your time. So there's ways to do it, but somehow we think that I don't know if it's this generation or my some of my generations too is like, oh, I want everything people owe me to help me. I'm like, oh no, they don't want you to help you, but like it's such so good that you said that and say, go find somebody. It's 100% all about the relationships you make, and you need to make great connections every single day.
Jaclyn StromingerYou do great connections every single day. So but uh but so Brian, I wanna I want to talk, you know. When you were kind of like going through and you're working at, you know, the you know, and you're teaching and you're working at the university, when did you decide like this isn't for me? I want to go out on my own, or I want to go and do something different. Well was there a was there an aha moment or a turning point for you, or did somebody kick you in the butt and say go out and do something else?
Dr. Brian E. ArnoldThere was a couple catalysts
– Entrepreneurship, Purpose & Building a Bigger Vision
Dr. Brian E. Arnoldto that. The first catalyst was five kids and a teacher salary.
Jaclyn StromingerAnd so is there a problem with that?
Dr. Brian E. ArnoldAnd so those weren't those two things weren't coming together, not with the life that I wanted, not with the life that I dreamed that I would have for them.
Jaclyn StromingerHe worked dream and vision, right?
Dr. Brian E. ArnoldJust dream and vision, absolutely. Uh, and then I believed that I had God had given me a bigger purpose in life. And I I enjoyed teaching and I didn't enjoy the politics of teaching, I enjoyed going to school and helping people learn and helping people grow. It was just some of the things that I was teaching. That was like, oh, so I'm teaching technology at the university and teaching teachers how to plug in a VCR. I mean, this is exciting things, you know, back in the day before we had internet and that kind of stuff, you know, and I'm teaching them how to use an overhead projector and you know, and then we got into the internet and that kind of stuff. And I'm like, wait a minute, this is great, but is this really what I was designed to do? And then I got involved with companies called the World Financial Group, and World Financial Group had some leaders in there that were, it was a it was a multi-level uh financial service company. And you may know some of the people I worked with. Well, I came in, and the guy who brought me in quit that made me go directly under a gentleman named Ed Milette. So I was with Ed Milette for seven years, and some of you might know the name. He's a you know, he's a big speaker now and does all kinds of stuff. And so I I kind of learned under him, and then another guy got switched when Ed left, I got switched over to a guy named Patrick Bit David, which is another guy that is, you know, got these political podcasts now that just crack me up. But he's worth 140 million dollars, and we get to talking up, you know, talking that kind of stuff still to this day. And then that's where my vision, those relationships, open my eyes to possibilities and what's around there and what and now it's like, okay, now I'm in a race to see how good I can be, how I can help now help others become, you know, the person they're gonna be. And so that's kind of been the life's circle of saying, okay, what is it that I can do? What do I want to do? And now finding the people that are in my life that can help me realize those dreams. And so whether that's searching and then got into books. I can remember, I think one of my magic of thinking big was one of my first books. And then I read The Greatest Salesman. I'll read this day with love in my heart. And you know, all those things are part of who I have become, but I'm not even close. I'm so more excited at 60 than I ever was at 40 about the amount of people that I get to help. And the now it's more like, how do I help you become that person instead of trying to grow me anymore?
Jaclyn StromingerRight. So when did you stop working with the world financial?
Dr. Brian E. ArnoldI was there too well 2008. It probably rings a bell of what happened all in 2008. I had a mortgage company, had was doing financial services, boom, 2008 happens, trying to make it stay alive for about six months. And it was just there, it there was nothing to be had. There was no sales, and then I decided to come back to Colorado. My mom had gotten sick, and so now I'm back in Colorado and I'm and I'm staying here. And I decided, hey, I'm gonna go into the nonprofit world. So, you know, I don't need to, you know, I can still help people in the nonprofit world. So I ran a couple homeless services facilities, and now I'm helping,
– Why Most People Stay Stuck in Jobs They Hate
Dr. Brian E. Arnoldyou know, folks that are experiencing homelessness and figuring that out. And then I realized in the nonprofit world, there's just a lot of example. Yeah. Denver, yeah, Denver has 50. Well, at the time I was still doing 54 different homeless services organizations just in the Denver metro area, which is okay, but they're all pretty much doing the exact same thing. I get on the I get on the board, and now the chair of the board of one of the largest ones at give giving out money. And so I said we're giving the money to the people who are all doing the same thing instead of combining the money and really making a difference, we're paying ad admin fees to all these folks, which it's great. They're helping people, they're doing this, but most of the money is going to pay for their salaries and their admin and their ability to help others. And we can't politically come together and say, how do we really tackle this in a way that is going to make a dent? But instead, let's have 40, 54 organizations that help six people each or 20 people each or 100 people, you know. It's like, wow. So then at the decide to get out of that at some point and say, I'm going back into helping people be, you know, achieve their dreams.
Jaclyn StromingerSo you know what? So I love I love all that because each so a couple things. Everything that you have done, and listeners, I think this is so critically important to have unstoppable success. You are always evolving. And I you've listeners, you've heard me say this before, before MMA measure, monitor, and adjust. So Dr. B's been measure, monitoring, and adjusting. It's like, okay, well, you know what? The nonprofit world, I've been loving it, but I'm gonna measure it, monitor it. And guess what? I can't adjust it the way I want. So I'm going to then make a pivot right you're you're then it's on to something else that you can measure monitor and adjust but you are always looking at it but at the crux of it you are the CEO of you and so that's what you're looking at whether or not you know is it the alignment is it my do I need to recalibrate my vision I need to recalibrate my mission and and so this is it's so important because some people might be looking at you know thinking oh my god you're you're you change you know every 10 years or you switch to no you the the profession may have changed the way that you brought in money but the you didn't change you just actually you changed your vision and your mission because you wanted to make sure that it was still aligned with who you want it to be yeah I guess I'm so glad you said because you are so right I I have evolved you know and and I think one thing that I've done for the last I'm on year 39 right now of coaching track.
Dr. Brian E. ArnoldSo I've been coaching track and field for 39 years. I've had I've coached seven Olympians I've coached a whole bunch of national champions in college I've coached high school state champions I've coached to that so I have had the ability to get really good at my craft of helping people do what it is that they want to do in life. And no matter what stage of the the the actual company I work with or the actual you know group that I'm working with or profession or career that you might call it, I'm still teaching people I'm still coaching people I'm still making a difference in people's lives. I'm actually
– Finding Your Passion & Creating a Life You Love
Dr. Brian E. Arnoldjust happen to be really good at some of the things that I do right now this is I've said this is going to be my last year coaching track. I tell my wife that every year and then a no student comes in and I believe right now I have the best high jumper in the state of Colorado that I'm working with and he will win state in a few weeks and then I'm gonna be done coaching track. However that doesn't mean I'm gonna stop coaching people because now I'm not doing track or I'm not doing you know helping somebody in the field on the outside with their physical body but what what does it take I would say coaching somebody is all more mental than it is ever physical can that person do it do they love to do that I have a podcast that's called Living Boldly with purpose so helping people find whatever their purpose is whatever God gave them the greatest skill to be able to do and then to find that skill and move forward. You know now it's just like okay so what is it that you do every day when you get up what do you love to do every day when you get up and then they tell me and I go well why aren't you doing that? Well because my my my mom told me I needed to be an accountant but you hate being an accountant what kind of what kind of life is that for the next 40 years of your life where you're gonna be an accountant and this whole like retirement thing and work for 40 years and retire that that's dumb. People it means to me anyways is dumb because like I can't imagine I imagine slowing down but I don't think that I'm gonna go save up a whole bunch of money for 40 years and then try to live another 40 years on that amount of money doing something I hate to do. Once you find your passion you can't help but do it all the time.
Jaclyn StromingerYou can't help but do it all you know it's and I'm I'm super glad that you said that because it's you know and and people have said this for eons and eons and I don't know who whoever said it first but maybe I should you know clawed it which is basically you know do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life right you know and so one thing that that I find really fascinating is so many people get in that rut
– Why You Should Never Hate Your Life
Jaclyn Stromingerof what you just said you know I get up in the morning and I do this or I you know I can't wait to the end of my day so I can go and do my passion. If you can you can always find a way to turn your passion into a profession if it's a true passion. Yeah right and and and then what defines success right you know your success and how and what what you label success and what I label success might be two different things. I mean for me you know maybe my success is driving a Bentley I don't know not really but but but you know whatever it is you have to define it for you but do what makes you truly happy you know I and I and I and I say this with and I can't I guess I can't say this with enough conviction if you listeners if you are working in a field or at a company where you get up in the morning and you cringe about going into the into your office give me give me a call give Brian a call no just say no more lying in the sand if you're listening to this right now if you heat hate where you work or it makes you absolutely bloody ass miserable call one of us because you should never be miserable life is too short. We live every single day life is too short.
Dr. Brian E. ArnoldAbsolutely there's a I don't know if you remember to say I don't know if people say anymore like T G I F thank God it's Friday. And I just like my wife and I were talking this morning because today's Monday morning and as we're recording this I don't know what day you're watching this on but we were just saying like we pick our time to do stuff. Like what is Friday? Like are we excited about having Friday every single day because we can't wait that our work week is over like no because my wife has an embroidery business and she's in the house and so we do we work on weekends sometimes we work on but this morning like I I I do um it's called the routine.live and it's a devotional
– Freedom, Flexibility & Designing Your Ideal Life
Dr. Brian E. Arnoldthat I do that works on mindset and mind thinking every single morning I started this year at 6 30 every single morning we're on day 97 and it's it's like for 20 half hours something like that that I'm doing it and now I put it on live because it's me taking my devotion my morning routine drinking water breathing all that kind of stuff well I was tired after I got done with it. I don't know why just last yesterday we did party types of Easter stuff and we were over the relatives and so a lot of chocolate yeah and I went back and I got in bed for an hour and then I got back up and I'm like we were just talking about like yeah we it's Monday morning and we're not worried about Monday morning if I need to sleep an extra hour I can go sleep an extra hour that is what life allows you to do when you're doing the things you love to do you set your schedule you set your time another man doesn't tell you when to get up another man or woman doesn't tell you what you got to do all day long. Another and I'm not I'm not saying that having a job is a bad thing and you might have to keep the job until you get where you want to do if that's your passion you do it but you can't be in a place where somebody else is directing how your life is progresses.
Jaclyn StromingerRight. And I think one of the big things for me when I think when I hear that it's making sure that you are working with a company andor a team that understands that life is not a line right that that that there are you know it's about and it's about the effort that you are doing right it's right it's how did you put in the effort and are you getting the results? If you're getting the results that your company needs life should be flexible your the time you clock in and the time you clock out I mean unless you know granted now there are certain jobs that do need time stamps right so like if you're at a restaurant and where you're working at a restaurant they open they close at certain times if you're a pilot if you're like you know there are certain jobs but you have to love it. You have to want to be there right and so yes some things may have to dictate when you are there but you better love it. Yeah you better absolutely absolutely love it. All right so Brian I really could talk to you for hours about this if you could give our listeners and I know it's I'm out I'm asking for one but what would be one thing if they could put into action today that might change their trajectory what would it be?
Dr. Brian E. ArnoldI would I would give the same advice that you told your folks to do right now is go create some relationships. Make sure you make a meaningful relationship every single day for the rest of this month. Be very intentional about it. Be very purposeful about it. Find people that you want to know more about that can get you to where you want to be and call them up spend some time with them and literally I'm gonna sit down with you for a half hour I'm gonna call it can be a Zoom it can be however you need to do it but go get 30 new people in your life today that will start your circle
