When Work Feels Pointless

Scripture:
Ecclesiastes 2:22–23 — “What has a man from all the toil and striving of heart with which he toils beneath the sun? …even in the night his heart does not rest. This also is vanity.”

Devotional:
There are seasons when work feels empty. You pour in effort, yet see little fruit. Projects collapse, recognition doesn’t come, and routines feel like an endless loop. The writer of Ecclesiastes understood this deep weariness—work “beneath the sun” can feel like “vanity.”

This perspective is honest—but it’s not the final word. The key phrase is “beneath the sun.” When work is viewed only from an earthbound perspective—no God, no eternity—it is ultimately empty. But with God in the picture, your labor takes on eternal meaning. Nothing done for Him is wasted, even when results are slow or invisible.

It’s okay to acknowledge when your work feels pointless. God can handle your honest questions. But bring that discouragement to Him. Ask Him to renew your vision, to show you how your effort matters to His Kingdom, and to anchor your hope beyond temporary outcomes.

Have you recently felt like your work is pointless or unproductive? Why?
How does bringing God and eternity into the picture change your view of that work?
What small step of faithfulness can you choose today, even if you don’t see immediate results?

Prayer:
Lord, You know the times my work feels empty. Meet me in my discouragement and restore my perspective. Help me trust that nothing done for You is in vain, even when I can’t see the impact. Amen.
